    I found this during our last lockdown in NZ and it's changed my teaching. I'm now making hyperdocs to share and sell with other teachers and I've added this link to the instructions slide to acknowledge where I got the idea from originally. :)

    I started using hyperdocs this semester. I have two issues:
    1. I know how to make a forced copy, but ran into a issue when I linked a PDF. All my students got the same document. Not sure what I did wrong.
    2. How do you make a hyperdoc for multiple classes? I linked an edpuzzle video on my hyperdoc, but the link was for only one of my classes. The other classes could not access their edpuzzle class.
    Thank you for your videos, they are always helpful.

    This has been very helpful. I will be using your resources without a doubt. One suggestion: The word "effective" can be a tricky word when applying it to a political or social leader in an essential question. For example: Hitler was effective, but in a bad way. Other leaders were effective in a good way. Maybe we could ask Was Qin a good leader or a bad leader? (Just trying to help teachers avoid possible confusion with the students)

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  3 года назад

      Yeah, I hear you. The intention with this activity was to actually determine his effectiveness as a leader versus whether he was good or bad from a moral standpoint.

    Sam, you are AMAZING! Your videos are clear, well-organized, and engaging--by far my favorite source for integrating technology in the classroom. I have two questions. First, I'm not sure how to pull all of these components together. I'm relatively tech savy and have used many of these programs and platforms in the classroom, but I'm having trouble syncing the massive amount of tools we have at our disposal. For example, in the past I've created Slide books that I use with my in class lessons. They look similar to your Hyperdoc slides. Yet I just finished setting up the framework for my Google Site using your tutorial, in which you showed us a fantastic way of posting daily assignments and directions in conjunction with Google Classroom. Would it be redundant and confusing to students to put those directions on the Google Sites daily assignments and in a Slides Hyperdoc? Secondly, I noticed in your tutorials that you teach middle school HSS in California as well as I do--hello from So Cal. :) Do you ever share or collaborate you content specific lessons?

      Hi Julie! Thank you so much!!
      I think the best approach in terms of setting everything up is to have a clear, predictable system, and to keep it as simple as possible. As long as your instructions are exactly the same in Google Sites as well as the Hyperdoc, I think it's totally fine to have the instructions in two places. But if you start posting them in both places, just make sure you continue to do so so that students know where they can predictably go in order to find instructions.
      I know I also show how to sequence a ton of different programs in this tutorial, but I wouldn't start out the year that way. Instead, I'd start by very slowly incorporating different apps and building out your suite and adding complexity as the year progresses.
      I do share my lessons! I have posted a few to my blog at newedtechclassroom.com
      For most entries I've included graphic organizers/lesson plans as well as how-tos for the programs.
      Right now I'm actually no longer teaching social studies: I'm going to be a full-time technology teacher! So I won't be collaborating about SS, but am always interested in sharing ideas with others. You can also email me at newedtechclassroom@gmail.com because responses to my responses get lost in the sea of RUclips!

    Really helpful. I've made hyperdocs before but had never considered using SLIDES for it! So smart.
    Quick question: How long would you expect a project organized like this to last (especially if teaching remotely)? Is this a few days? A week? Several weeks? I'm thinking about the Fall and I need guidance on pacing expectations. Thanks for the help!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  4 года назад

      Hi Meg, thanks for your feedback and your question! All of the HyperDocs I've shown in my videos were lessons I actually used with my students, and for the most part they complete them in a single week. I teach 6th grade, so I think it's totally feasible for students that age and above to do so. Lower grades might need to draw out the assignments a little longer.
      Another factor is how experienced your students are with using technology. My students had already used all the apps shown, so they didn't require lots of time learning how to use the programs. If they need to, it will definitely take longer! I'd recommend starting the fall with a "tech onboarding" program whereby your teaching key foundational tech skills, as well as some of the basics for how to navigate the main programs you'll be using. That'll hopefully save a lot of headaches in the future.

How is it that the students are not all editing the same topic if they are linking to the same document? In Google Classroom I can make a copy of each document for the kids, but how can you do that as part of a Google Slide Hyperdoc?

      You'll have to either edit the back of the link to "force push" make a copy (change it to read "copy" instead of view or edit). Or, you can set it as view only and have students make the copy themselves. In either case, students will also have to share their document back with you in order for you to be able to see it.

    I lovvvveee your topics and presentation very much and I've been learnng a lot. I teach 4th graders with special needs in the less priviledged zone here in New York City. I do understand the benefits of techonology but its a challedge to teach my population on how to access these tehnologies not to mention that It is difficult to "engage" prents to the learning of their children becuase of a lot of barriers, language being one. I've been using less tech- ways to solicit answers and engagement from my students (e.g. using 5x6 whiteboards to show their answers, write their response in the chat box., etc). Any tips Sam?

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  4 года назад

      Hi Charlie, thanks so much for your feedback! If students have access to a chat feature I'm assuming they have access to a laptop? If so, I'd try to use some free programs with interactivity functions so that students can engage more actively with what you are teaching via live lessons. Tools like Quizziz, Kahoot, GoFormative, Pear Deck, & Nearpod will all be worth taking a look at.
      I know those aren't non-tech solutions, but they are free (or have significant functionality with the free version), and easy to use, so hopefully they can help out a bit. If students have smartphones, they can also use the app version of these programs as well to respond live while you are presenting info!

      Hi Katie, TBH the most common way I add music is just by embedding a RUclips video with music into my Slides. Another other option is go through the process of uploading an mp3 to your Drive and then inserting an audio file from Drive, though I find this far to tedious and no longer have mp3s, hence just embedding RUclips videos.

    Thank you for this inspirational video. I have created a few Hyperdocs in the past before I was doing eLearning. My question has to do with pacing and assigning grades. Say I post the hyperdoc on Monday and it is a two week unit (based on a book). Is it best to have specific due dates for each assignment? not take any grades until the end of the unit? Only have a big unit grade rather than small homework grades with culminating project grade? I teach high school and I love the idea of letting kids work at their own pace. Thanks so much!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  4 года назад +1

      Hi Robin, It's really a matter of your philosophy about grading. I personally gave completion grades for all the smaller parts that led up to the larger project, and gave a content grade for the final project. If you grade the final project closely, I think you could actually do away with all the lead-up grades under the assumption that they wouldn't be able to do a good job on the final piece if they didn't do the other assignments. I'd keep it as simple as possible! Hope that helps!
