As a Tau player I couldn't imagine not magnetizing Crisis Suits.

There are two types of wargamers: those with fully magnetised battlesuits and those who don't play Tau.
though I know a Tau player with a 8k point army that only ever painted like 5 fusion blasters and often forgets them or they drop off whenever he moves a commander
One benefit of adding magnets: soaks up more hobby time for fewer hobby dollars.
One con for magnets: that only works if you stop adding to the pile of boxes

I respect the hell out of this.
On large vehicles where you're already $100+ deep on a single model, or on something like a Kill Team where you're going to put in a lot more detail into everything and customization is critical, I think magnets absolutely have a place. On your random base infantry that makes up 90% of your army, it's overkill.
This 100%. Magnets should 100% be used for either bigger/expensive stuff or 'special units'.
Most of my models are Orks, and I couldn't imagine magnetizing every single boy, loota, and burna. Nobz, maybe. Stuff like battlewagons, deff dreads, and kommandos though? You bet I'll magnetize those.

True, like for necrons I'd rather just do extras warriors each with gauss reapers and gauss flayers than try to magnetize their hair thin arms
Yep. Vehicles are too damn expensive not to have hot swapped loadouts.
Idk, the idea of buying a standard marines box 4 times so you can have specific load out models for your tournament army is expensive. Might be worth the time over money.

Magnets are love. Magnets are life.
So the actual reasons to not magnetize are:
1. It takes a lot of work
2. It means you get less models
3. You could lose pieces
But its also alot cheaper since you dont need to buy more full models, you have alot variety in choices, putting magnets on your models might take long
But it won't take as long as building and painting a whole new squad

Oh, by the way: *INCOMING*
First: Do drill with a manual drill
Second: Not everything needs magnets! (meltacharges,cc weapons etc.)
Third: You do not need 2 magnets, a small patch of metal will do fine and is "moldable"
Fourth: if you have problems sorting/keeping the parts - remember ...magnets will stick to.. yea metal! So a small tube of metal/old plates etc. will hold them.
-[if you are a "displayer" its a nice look to have a squad armed and ready infront of a metal part(displate/plate i.e.) as a weapons rack of sorts.]
Fifth: have a dedicated hobby space - even if its just a sidetable - so you can organize better... and once you hit the 100 model mark you should get a display anyway .>

I have all my heavy weaps and mech-units (tanks, dreads...) mag'd on my 4k 1ksons army (30/40k) and my wscars (2k atm for 40k).
Took some time, but the money saved is worth it! ( I am looking at you, heavy-kits)
I blew through my first shipment really fast because I didn't realize metal worked. Dammit, that'd fix the polarity thing too.
@@northropi2027 just use a paper hole punch and thin gauge sheet metal. As a bonus you can use that hole punch as a rivet source for your crafting and you can also use the paper dots as coins, piles of treasure, and if you cover a super cheap mini with glue and sprinkle it with the dots you can then paint it gold/Silv/cop for Treasure golems.
Just use sheet metal that has high iron content because high quality stainless steel isn't magnetic.
Don’t magnetize just get 8 warlord titans for all weapon choices and 2 additional ones for just in case
But I only have two kidneys. And I need at least one for myself!

Its been much harder to find that motivation this past year, especially if you want them to game with, and you cant game with anyone due to lockdowns and what not. If i needed stuff from a boxset for a game next week (for example) id have them built and painted in 3-4 days lol

As someone who has magnetized an entire Grey Knights army including 30 Strike Marines, 30 Paladin/Terminators, and 5 characters - All with EVERY weapon option (Strikes - 30- halberds, 60 falchions, 30 swords, etc.), including hands/fists/pointing hands for when they're not dual wielding...DO NOT DO THIS. IT IS DUMB AND YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF. Just proxy or build more kits over time.
nooooooo, do it, i assure you magnetizing everything down to a models head WILL be worth it, trust me Alpharius, the most trustworthy fellow in the grim darkness of the far future!

@@Ed-ss1uh You just bought some Grey Knights? My advice would be to not stress about it. The most I would do is magnetize 10 Paladins/Terminators. Everything else I would just build out however and proxy the different weapons if needed.
One tip for GK is to paint the tilting plates in different patterns for each 5 man squad. Then you can say "The strike squad with the red tilting plates have falchions, the white tilting plates are halberds, the half red/half white squad have warding staves" or whatever you choose. Gives a built in way for you and your opponent to differentiate when proxying. Can do the same thing with paladins/terminators.

I love magnetizing everything but I hate when I'm moving troops around in bunches and arms/weapon hands fall off.
This dude is now my spiritual mentor, lol. Plus I just love the fact he collects Black Templars as well ;)
I am for the magnet. The only downside long term is storage for the extra pieces, keeping it all together.
Zip lock baggies or a dollar store storage thing with labels

Just placed an order from K n J. Thank you for the sizing guide too. Finally painting some vehicles and I've been worried about weapon options. Not anymore, now I choose all the options!
As a tyranid player I have to say, magnetizing the big guys like carnifexes and Tyrants is a fun, easy first foray if you are looking into learning how to do it.
And then GW doesn't give you a reason to use anything other than twin-devourers.
would you recommend magnetizing tyranid warriors? Been looking at getting a box of them and all the options look good to me.
@@B1-997 Actually yes, tyranid warriors arms are quite easy to magnetize, so go for it.
I will always magnetize my crisis suits, because throwing different load outs on them whenever I want and seeing the cool looking weapon load out options is great fun.
I don't magnetize because i have 2 dogs who eat anything and everything on the floor, so best to avoid any serious problems caused by eating magnets

Much appreciate the info on magnet sizes and recommendations! I am looking into building my first army of imperial knights and would like very much to magnetize the arms.
Limit magnets to vehicles, buildings and heavy weapons like the Eldar hover gun that comes with your Guardians. Otherwise don't bother unless you hate yourself.
Don't magnetize when you are fine with maybe having to buy another kit when you want another loadout later down the line seems like a good rule of thumb to me. I am currently thinking about fully magnetizing a blood angels furioso/lib/dc dread to have all 3 options (painting sounds like a nightmare though) atm lol, we'll see how far I go with that.
That's a thing I have thought about. Take a Tactical Marine squad, for instance. You field 5 guys, and one of them can take a special or heavy weapon. You decide to give your gunner a plasma gun. Later on, you decide that you want to give your gunner a missile launcher instead. So you buy another box of tactical marines, and build one with a missile launcher. And another with a heavy bolter, and another with a flamer, and so on. You already have the grunts you need for your unit, so you can build the second box entirely as gunners.
I really like your painting themes, looks, good, not overloaded and really gritty as if they were wariors in the field.

Great video! And great pro/cons for both sides. The only thing I regret NOT magitizing (and this is because I assembled them before I'd even heard of doing it) was my first 6 crisis suits. Turns out they're incredibly easy to magnetize and I swap out loadouts enough to justify the time investment
And another thing with magnet: You usually dont get good poses. Thats why I dont do that.
Great video! I magnetized a “Heavy Weapons Specialist” with both arms swappable and the waist posable. That’s seven extra weapons to keep up with. I can imagine how much trouble it would be to keep up with an entire squad’s extra gear! Magnets are cool, offering more usable options when GW kits only have 5 or 6 troops but way more weapon choices.

I'll just keep to keeping my models solid. Great vid, it is good that you looked at both sides of this issue.
Pro-tip: Choose a polarization scheme and stick to it. Even between armies. a)Putting a dreadnaught arm on a WraithKnight is hilarious. b) If you are consistant you can swap flying bases, and or arms/weapons/etc as you buy more of kits you've already magnatized.
Excellent video. I was in the same boat, I use to magnetize everything (weapon swaps + less chance to break in the case) but then I just always took the exact load-out I had on them, never painted the extra weapons and its easier to lose a weapon/ body part not permanently affixed to your model. My breaking point was trying to magnetize my Kingdom Death models, 1x1mm or even 0.5x0.5mm magnets are back breaking things to magnetize and after doing 12 figures with their 100 options, I 100% gave up on magnets forever. This was combined with trying to magnetize the giant brass scorpion from FW which just ended up wrecking the model since its weight just twists the legs till it falls on its belly. Since then I have only magnetized my FW Primarchs (i move them around a lot and fear them breaking) and bases for carrying cases.
I think I’m definitely only going to do it for bigger vehicles or models, specifically the sentinel I just picked up. That thing has more weapon options than there are supported Imperial Guard Regiments

yeah that makes sense. I don't bother painting up options I'm not using, but with some units it is nice to have those options. with blightlords they are actually ran in a bunch of different ways, so it's good to have the options there.

I've recently built an Impulsor as my first vehicle, and figuring out out how to magnetise everything was the most enjoyable part.

in cases for units like blightlord termies, it's actually highly beneficial. these guys have loads of load outs, and will completely change with each edition, what the best load out is. if you want to buy and paint 2 new boxes every edition, thats up to you I guess. it takes no time at all to drill a hole in the arms and glue them in.
I've been using K&J for quite a while and they really are stellar. Wasn't expecting to see them turn up here!
I personally magnetize the titanicus models and vehicles and monsters just in case I want to change the load out
And of course, the bases so I can use my cookie boxes to transport them once they are painted
Very helpful video! I am getting into Warhammer 40k for the first time and am building a Salamander army so I am lucky in the sense that whenever a weapon slot can fit a flame weapon, I am always taking that flame weapon and don't even need to consider painting and magnetizing the other weapons. The only things I really need to consider magnetizing are my vehicles (have a Repulsor and 2 Razorbacks) since they have many many possible wargear combinations, and my Eradicators, since I am having a very difficult time picking between melta rifles and heavy melta rifles (the latter of which shoots twice but takes an hit penalty if shoot after a move). This video really helped me in understanding the cons in taking magnetizing too far, so much appreciated.

I'm just getting into "the hobby" and haven't even built/painted my first minis yet, but I DO have previous experience with K&J Magnetics. They are a great wholesale magnet retailer. Definitely second sourcing from them! I plan on magnetizing the wraithguard/lord models I got from my craftworlds start collecting box!
Would it be easier to finish the guns you already did and then just move the 20 so guns between the team's that can only have X amount of specialised people eg. 2 magnetised models in a squad to give flamers
I have 2 units of the old chaos warriors, thats 32 bois. 4 different options for them each...i was gonna magnitize but thatd be hell...should i just make 2 units of each option and color scheme? I guess by then ill have a litteral horde of watriors!
Just magnetised my whole tau army in one day it was quick and easy, and I'm a noob only been building and painting for the last 2 months.
One thing I like to magnetize is cavalry. This way the mount can be painted separately from the rider and also I don't need a tall container to transport them. Tank turrets are great too because then you can turn them in battle and go "bang bang bang".

Instructions unclear; I ended up gluing all of my minis to the interior of my figure box and now my fingers are stuck together.
Every bit of my necrons are magnetized... because disassembling and reanimating in real time never gets old.
Especially making it look like they are destroyed and then come back to life like dawn of war animation.
I used a power drill the first time I magnetized something. It was a imperial knight canis Rex box and the one arm piece that you mount weapons too it bit in so fast and totally ripped the piece apart . I had to build a new part out of green stuff

I fully magnetized my delaque gang and it was a mistake, I spend 5 times more time than any other gang. And I almost never use spare weapons. This is so wasteful.
Love this video!!! The honesty and experience on display here are on point. I couldn't agree more, I'm a newer hobbyist and I've been looking into magnetization, but came to the same conclusion that it just isn't worth it on regular infantry models 99% of the time. While the option is super cool, I know that I am personally WAY TOO LAZY and have TOO MANY MODELS to work on already, so I'll take your advice and save it for the big boys. GOOD LOOKING OUT!!!

I have never magnetized, and never will. I just don't want to put in that additional effort. What's more, I like fielding big armies, so it's not likeI don't have other units with different loadouts sitting around waiting to the fulfill each role ss I need them.
I am however constantly surrounded by people who insist one must magnetize to get any value from the hobby. And often these people don't even finish the project they are on before getting distracted by the next tournaments meta list floating around the internet.
I understand the advantages. But as you said; there is no truly right or wrong answer, each hobbyist must decide for themselves based on their own values. I would honestly rather just continue to expand mycollection by buying an extra unit if desperately need a new Loadout.
Magnetizing a few intercessors this weekend, quick dremel tip. Anchor the dremel (workbench/clamp), then bring the mini to the bit. Hole is less likely to wobble and you have more control.
What Pin Vice do you recommend using? Do you have any links to a good set?

Do you buy the rare earth magnets? N48 or N52? Ive used N48 for my hive tyrant weapon. Do swap them out offen enough. They are not quite strong enough

right now im slowly building and painting 30 ork boyz, and i plan on having 10 of them magnetized so they can be swapped out to be shoota boyz, and the reason why not to do all 30 (which would be cool) i just feel like its extra work,

kill team, vehicles, crisis suits and terminators (maybe) are where magnets shine for me but everyone has a different point where they say enough is enough and don't want to put anymore time effort and money into a model.

What size of magnets should I use for my tyranid models?
What magnet size do you recommend for Stonehorn/Thundertusk and Ogor troops?
How did you make those sweet projectile pockmarks on the centurions?
Another thing about magnets: If you do it wrong, they are PITA to remove. I bought a set of pre-owned WarMachine models a while back that were magnetized; I got them very cheap, but the magnets were not strong enough (even though they were doubled and tripled up) to hold the parts securely, and to make the arms and weapons sit flush I had two options: Greenstuff the gaps, or remove the magnets. Since I only plan to resell them, I went with option B - remove the magnets.
Tiny little 1.5mm magnets. How to get them out? They were superglued in place. I looked up "micro hole saws" on eBay, and the closest thing I could find were diamond-coated tools which were too thick. I had to _make_ my own tool. I used an old scriber handle made of very hard steel and filed teeth into it. Amazingly it actually works! I used it to saw down to the bottom on the magnet and then gently rock it out with a pair of tweezers.
Also, be aware that neodymium magnets can be _very_ dangerous to children and pets if swallowed.
Yea....... It may have taken more time to finish my Baneblade. But now I have one of each. And was so worth it.
I use a power drill all the time. I have a quick change adapter, start with small bits and increase the size til I get to size I want. It gets rid of the "grabbing" problem.

Last year, for my CSM duders I made 2x of every special/heavy weapon option. I basically brought a CSM box and they all got special weapons from my bits box. It was because I didn't know what size magnets to buy, or where to buy. But after this video I feel like magnetizing special weapons for 4 dudes probably would have taken just as much time. :D
I magnetize my kill teams its only two boxes of miniatures most of time :)
