As a swede who has done my fair share of babysitting, I can confidently confirm that the MÅLA paints have two purposes: Kids can eat it without dying and it comes off when you inevitably have to put the little ones in the tub and hose them off :D
🤣🤣🤣
thank you so much
I have wondered for decades every time I go in ikea and see stuff for kids
"do swedish people actually buy this for their kids?"
now i know the answer
That feeling when Jay painted a marine better with terrible paints than you did with professional ones
Shut
I feel personally attacked
Did you have fun doing it? Nothing else matters.
"I'm in this comment and I don't like it"
It's a serious kick in the balls
IKEA Måla paint is tempera, not acrylic.
It has a completely different binder that is designed to be child-friendly and washable (mostly). The reactivation and lifting is part of the nature of this binder, not a faulty feature.
Ah, that absolutely explains it. It's basically finger paint.
I kept thinking if only Jay would use an acrylic medium like GW's Contrast or Lahmian, or perhaps Liquitex Matte. Quite the feat to paint with a product that will reactive to the moisture on your finger tips or crack and flake off if roughly handled once dry.
"MÅLA-series has everything, what a child needs..." should indeed give a strong hint on what the target audience is for this product. 😄
That explains why it was so bad. I only have minimal experience in painting miniatures- as in I've painted one. But I've also repainted Pokemon figurines. It feels very different from painting miniatures, they're larger with more flat surfaces. I had to use my regular acrylic paint, which isn't paint for young children, but isn't fancy stuff; because I needed a palette more colorful than the Star Wars Legion paint set. The main difference was that I couldn't get a small amount of paint out at once and a bit more water was needed. Any problems with my Pokemon figurines are the result of me, not my tools.
It would be interesting to see Jay try the same challenge again with the tubes of entry level acrylic paint you can get at general craft supply stores. What's the difference between acrylic and acrylic meant for miniature painting?
I think it's actually gouache paint, not tempera but i might be wrong
I had this experience 3 years ago. One of the worst painting experiences I've had still to this day. 🤣 You nailed it though
That was the first video of yours I saw. Thought of you when I saw this one.
As a Swedish influencer, you have some sway with IKEA, don't you?
Look at me I made this video first
@@henrikwannheden7114 oh i wish hahaha
I'd love to see you collab with Jay and Nick at somepoint Emil!
In the dark grim future, there's only meatballs and affordable DIY furniture.
You'd almost think that the paints are designed to reactivate, so when your child spills, it's easy to clean up :))
not gonna lie, the washed out grimdark look comes across really good, a millennia of service and war, perfectly portrait by having to paint it literally with blood and sweat
Yeah. And the storm lord symbol looks like it was painted on by the soldier wearing the armor.
My kids use those paints, and when I saw the title, my first thought was that you were going to struggle with the white 😄
The presentation, great editing, and those smooth chair turn transitions, just elevate the video and make it so much more visually appealing
Right? He is so dang funny it doesn't really matter what the subject matter is. I laughed maniacally at the gam gam bit.
I don't think those are even acrylics but some kind of water-based paint that doesn't dry water proof. Try leaving the space marine in a glass of water and see if the water strips the paint.
These are probably tempera paints. The instructions say they might stain but sometimes can be washed off. This makes sense for children's paint.
Yep look like children's poster paints to me.
@@theheslops439 it's pretty much that
It's made so that toddlers can get the paint in the mouth without doing harm. It's meant for really small children, kindergarten stuff. Not meant as hobby paint.
I work at Ikea, MALA is the kids line of product so the Paint has got to be safe enough for little children to use and not ruin the whole home lol, so basically you can consider it more as a toy than real paint... That said, i believe the work you did with this miniature is still pretty good considering what you were working with - a "toy Paint" basically! Cheers
My art teacher used to say: A good artist will make a masterpiece with the best material. A great artist will make a masterpiece with any material.
Yep. Called it 10:42
But for real, those paints aren't even mediocre, they are quite bad even to make effects and washes. You painted a space marine with literal finger paint, and it turned out presentable. Very enlightening experiment.
Just call it grimdark and it's an absolute win
200 thin coats. 😁
Nice paintjob, Jay. 👍
I thinj its supposed to be washable paint
Fun video, this channel has become one of my instant watch when uploads channels. Look forward to more!
That marine looks better than some of my stuff lol
(p.s. without titanium white I'd be lost)
I have to say though, what you came up with is excellent. Dude... you took a toy and turned it into awesome!! Well done!
I love these types of experiments since it always shows just how good the actual artist is! Horrible paints but still looks fantastic because of pure skill!
Shame I can't post you another like for the duck masterpiece 🌟
"Rugged, durable construction."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm surprised you didn't have to assemble these paints. ;)
Man, I love your content! The swooping of all the paints off sold the whole vid already. Great stuff!!!!!
ok, next Video an IKEA Space Marine Army 1500 Points Blue/Yellow Marines painted with IKEA paints ? 😅😅
that would be hilarious, with tiny little IKEA decals on the shoulders
Have you try Mr color paint? I've seen many gunpla collector use that kind of paint .
Also love your content ❤️
Also tamyia, AK are also model paints he "missed".
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough I use AK for my minis. Is fine
Oh man it still looks so good xD well done, really fun video, would love to see what you can do with acryla-gouache
You made a decent marine out of crap 👍 This reminds me about my beginning in the hobby with czech tempera paints Kohinoor
That red going down looked like Ninjon painting with his blood 😂
i think it would be an interesting video painting with the blackest black you can buy and the whitest white to see what kind of designs would be cool
I really appreciate your valiant effort! That model actually looks really good considering.
you know you are a warhammer painter when your duck has better shading then design
Well, so much for that IKEA sponsorship 😅
I love being Swedish and being able to know what IKEA names mean
In spanish, Mala means "bad" hahaha
This was a fun one for sure. Always cool to see what other paints do.
I got a warhammer ad before watching this
J, the bravest man braveing the worst paints known to man. Nothing but heroism in this video
I wonder how the experience would have been if you tried mixing them with some kind of acrylic medium?
I'm not going to try it though...
New Merch. Jay's 40K Duck. (This is not a joke I'd buy the heck outta something that's has Ducks in 40K
I use craft paint for my home made terrain. But this IKEA paint looks crap compared to what I get from the warehouse stationary NZ
Its fun because "MALA" in spanish means "BAD", it was a foreshadowing all along.
It's hilarious because in spanish Mala (without the circle thing in the a, we don't have that in spanish), means "bad"
I FELT that heavy sigh while you were free-handing lol
Excellent vid!
Someone have the name of the chapter space marine book ? It's in the codex ?
I use apple barrel to paint my miniatures, it's a bit thick but you know what ya do there so.
"IKEA, I trusted you"
> as a Scandinavian - "why??"
I recently stumbled about some awesome wall paints from a local furniture megastore. 250ml for 3 bucks and contrary to typical craft paint they are loaded with pigments to a point that thinning them by a factor of 4 to 5 still doesnt destroy the consistency or coverage. They even work trough an airbrush and mix with other colors without turning into greyish brown sludge. That said i did mix in some of my homebrew magic medium/thinners to adjust consistency and flow regular water probably ruins it just like any other paint if you add too much.
For anyone interested it was "Poco Abtönfarbe" from the simmilarly named furniture store Poco but i guess those paints are available in many Hardware stores as well.
we have a store in the UK called The Works that sells cheap acrylic paint I use for terrain. its not great but does the job and costs about the same as a GW pot for a 200ml tube
Yes I use them too. Also I cheated and got a dulex cookie colour that is similar to Zandri dust.
It ended up looking really good
The reason you had the problem is that it's poster paint, sometimes called tempera. That's designed to be used on paper or board, and to mix even after drying. It's not acrylic paint, more like an opaque version of watercolour paint, similar to gouache.
Well at least you can use the tubes to make some nice terrain.
This paints not made for minis all time wather and all gone
this cheap paint experiments series is my favorite. I'd love to see how options most people would have locally available to them (such as hobby lobby/Michaels) brands would compare.
My man made a pretty decent space marine using finger paints
Dude you literally have the best intro. Love your videos.
I guess if you want too be positive, If Warhammer release a paper colouring in book and wooden miniatures....these paints will be great
I think using a matt varnish between paint payers would help build the opacity. it works for me when using blue liquitex ink, as its water activated and just rubs itself off when washing over it.
Mala is spanish for BAD XD
So now you store the paints on the Billy Bookcase? 😎🤠
i moved last week and they were all out of Billy in black!!!! i just couldnt bring myself to get the billy in white T_T
@@KairosVI They've been out of the basic brown wood Billy bookcases for several years now. I was looking to replace all the older bookcases I had acquired over the years (from other stores) along with buying a few more so they would all match.
Hey jay, you should try out Duncan’s “two thin coats” paint range. I personally enjoy it!! 😁
Should have taken a page out of Ninjon's book and matte varnished between each layer. Also, paint using blood because it has about the same coverage lol
that would have been cheating!!! ;)
@@EonsOfBattle fair enough. Might be the only way to make these usable. Do you think because of how thin they are, they might work when airbrushed? Not that I will ever buy them or use in my airbrush.
Good job nonetheless. Next: Crayons.
You need to try AK interactive 3rd gen paints. By far the best in the market
Based and AK pilled.
I would say they also have the best enamels on the market as well.
Wait... didn't Squidmar do this a few years back, too? :D
Yeah but Jay is funny
Extra points for saying "paint" with holding up MÅLA.
'tis the direct translation, you see. måla = [to] paint. But paint as in the liquid you paint with, that's not måla, that's målarfärg or just färg (direct translation of that is also "colour"). Swedish & English are closely related but sometimes it gets weird in the details.
Most excellent ending. Paper is indeed the intended medium. Trying it on a mini was brave and IMO you did awesome. The end result is all the more impressive for having used paints so decidedly *not* ment for plastic models.
The way the paints re-activate and wash away in just a couple of strokes with a wet brush? Possibly the best feature of Måla! Very much a feature, not a bug. It is so, so good when cleaning up after the kids managed to flip their thickly painted paper on to the floor.
Just found your channel - you are a great, great person! Fantastic personality
Looked really good as.weathered marines,.like.beaten up not shiny new ones.
My nearest Ikea is 5 hour drive one way..so I ain't gonna try this...
you don't need to its terrible paint for minis
But it gives real good ancient worm out battle damaged look, I'll try dollar tree paint...lol
Hah, I love that Applebarrel Black paint too, it's so good for what it is.
Amazing Video. Is that a 3d shoulder pad?
Could u do a video on non metallic painting
with the statement that it reactivates, makes me think this might be tempera paint. it's in the same family has Gouache and water color paints.
It's paint meant for toddlers from the childrens section of the store. It's non toxic and you can get it in your mouth without problems.
Trying to paint miniatures with finger paints is like trying to paint miniatures with food colouring or hair dye and then complaining that it doesn't work well.
@@johannalarsson1901 Might be dating myself here, but when I was in preschool/lower level grade school the class room paint was tempera. It's water soluble, cheap, non-toxic and (for kids) easy to work with.
Coat d'arms didn't make the list?
Wait, wait, wait.... have you been making browns by mixing red and green all this time?
I really hoped for an Ikea paint scheme marine until the very last moment!
I find it very funny that the name of the bottle is "mala", a word that in Spanish means "bad".You could say they are very honest only in another language 😅
Honestly, it could have ended way worse than that.
How about a rubber ducky marine ?
I love seeing people review paints cus I'm just gonna keep using apple barrel and folkart
Would love to see this become a series. Between this and the Apple Barrel video I'm curious as to your thoughts on other non-miniature acrylic paint brands. Stuff like Winsor & Newton, GOLDEN, Artists Loft, Amsterdam, etc.
I've got a couple GOLDEN High Flow Acrylic paints, specifically their Fluorescent Blue and Green. They seem to work well but I'm curious about other brands. Maybe just raid a Michaels or something.
As a Swede. No IKEA has never made good products. Except their kitchen stuff tbh. When buying a Desk for ur PC from IKEA don't buy one, build one with the help of drawers and a Kitchen counter. The wood on their own desks are hollow and easily breaks if you put heavy things on it. Most people here in Sweden we buy from IKEA yes, but when it comes to good furniture like chairs and table. No not really. It is just Americans and Asians that think "Oh my, IKEA big name so great so wow" When it is actually cheap wood with cardboard on the inside on most of their products. Their drawers and cabinets/storage things are great though.
Did you try not watering it down? Kinda looks like you over thinned it. Still great video!
He has another video where he exclusively uses Apple Barrel paints that actually don’t look bad. I take that as opportunity to remind hobbyists on a budget RUclipsrs who paint on camera do this for a living. The expensive pro stuff is obviously phenomenal and industry standard, but if the mini on your tabletop is something you’re happy with, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on paints. Jay obviously thinks of this stuff of subpar, and it probably is given his standards, but I wouldn’t mind it in my army. My standards are fairly lax in comparison, but that’s just me. For $10 if I can get a space marine army painted looking halfway decent for my house, I’m good with that.
Cheap ACRYLIC paints can produce some decent results. Cheap TEMPERA paints (or even more expensive ones) will never work well on a plastic miniature. The Apple Barrel (and similar) craft acrylic paints sometimes even outperform the expensive ones in certain colors. I have both high end and low cost paints in my arsenal.
But I can't think of any application where I'd turn to watercolors (i.e. tempera paints) on miniatures.
The irony: He used the Grenadier from the Intercessor Paint Set.
As a Swede I can say that the people at IKEA take their products seriously. Quality _is_ a goal. But this.. this isn't the first time a miniature painter has tested IKEA's paints on YT and the results was pretty much the same. Someone at IKEA should take their job just a little bit more seriously. It seems that they can achieve their goal of affordability, usefulness and quality. If they just cared.
For what it’s worth, the results you get with IKEA paints are better than about 90% of the models I typically see brought into gaming stores by people who paint with “hobby paints”. Which further lends validity to my opinion that practice is WAAAAAAAAAY more important than your brand of paint.
Squidmar already tried this, and apparently this channel called Geek Gaming Scenics. Haven't watched that guy's video. Glad to see someone else try! It's always fun watching these kind of experimental videos!
Tbh the model doesn't look too bad from an amateur as myself(I'm getting there with Gunpla models instead). But you kinda mentioned it, it's mainly for kids who probably like small arts and crafts stuff. Anything else with this paint wouldn't really work in the end
I liked the videos, those paints seem fun! ^^ (while I'm 25 I do enjoy childish things to a degree)
HORSE MEAT in the Ikea meatballs?! 😳😳😳😳
Inspired by Squidmar Mini's Ikea video in 2019? as you've bought the exact same paint set?
regardless, the mini turned out surprisingly well! good job!
IKEA Swedish meatballs...... hope you like horse meat. It happened awhile ago in Europe, suppliers where substituting horse meat for beef.
IKEA paint excels at one thing and one thing only : to be able to be removed very easily from walls , clothes and furniture so when the kids goes cray cray and starts doing frescos in his room the parent can remove it easily. Also that isn't toxic when smelled and not too toxic when swallowed. They don't care about saturation, they don't care about how well it sticks to materials etc... just be able to wash out easily. So, just oriented for children.
is the IKEA mala paint airbrush able and what's used for thinner water or acrylic mr color tinners
Legend says you must put some ABBA record to your cassette player or IKEA paints does´t work
This looks to me like a watercolour, bound with gum arabic, not acrylic resin. It always reactivate if you don't varnish it. I sometimes used ecoline as an ink, it works like a charm but if not varnished, it'll reactivate when you put another layer of paint... even years later !
Lets just point out that IKEA isnt good quality in general, in Sweden its considered very basic quality. Its a good balance between cheap and looking good/working
I'm so used to DankPods blowing out my ear drums whenever he reads something in all caps that I immediately took off my headphones when you read IKEA in all caps
Have you done any other apple barrel cheap craft paint video? I really do like watching pro painters use really bad\ weird paints to attempt good minis. What about using posca paint markers to paint a mini or straight up testors enamel paints for model cars? Or even Nail polish?
Only reason we don't have an IKEA chapter is because the Adeptus Mechanicus can't figure out how to assemble the STC for their armor.
Would take those Paints. Im new in the hobby and cant afford as much. Build my first Mini for a Video. Those PAints are too expensive for me like Citadel or else
Ah yes! With an appearance like this, he will be a perfect addition to the paper weight battalion!
