The loss of these build-a-bear HQs (and non-HQ kits, too) is honestly the single worst model decision GW has done in the past 5 or so years.
I love posing and glueing bits together even for troops. Remember the old waist that you could rotate and pose as you like... the troops became so unique in the end. It lis like GW have forgotten that the actual building step is a hobby in itself for some people.
I like a balance of the twi
problem is the price
and everyone basically kitbash them anyway
I would add scale creep, but generally agree with you. Necromunda kits are great, Skitarii are great. Ork boyz that can't even all be built with the same weapons not so much.
@@therealwinston3634 the price they charge is high enough to expect options. They charge easily double what Frostgrave charges, and if you want to see diversity and options, look at the Wizards and Wizards 2 sets. 40 heads (20 different) and some 56 arms for 8 bodies (as well as things like extra animals, pouches, scrolls), costing about €20.
Just like you reqeusted I'm letting you know: Yes, recreate those HQ in the primaris form. Looking forward to the video :)
I second this! Do it!!
Oh ab-so-lutely, I love kitbash videos!
Try painting Malice without just doing half and half black and white!
This
I'd say don't as the firstborn ones are just as nice as primaris, no need to retread old ground. I'd say make dreadnought versions of them, would be far more interesting than a simple scale increase.
Did he ever do the video?
I would adore it if those build-a-bear HQ boxes ever came back. The mono pose stuff makes sense for named characters but if I'm buying a model to be the leader of my forces, yeah, I want it to represent ME on the tabletop and all of my wacky choices. That way no one's captain will look exactly like mine.
I was told by a GW store manager that the purpose of the monopose was they have unique connection shapes, which makes it harder for other companies to make replacement parts, as the connention would stretch the 'unspecific' compatible with part.
Jay: I am in a bit of a Slaaneshi mood.
Me: NOOOO Jay, it’s November!!

“Chaos Undecided” is officially going to be the theme for my CSM army 🤣 Along with the name of my rock cover band.
I spit my soda out at 8:02
"What god do you serve, brother?"
"I'm chaos undecided."
I still believe the "space marine commander" kit was one of the best kits, period.
the eagle backpack is still one of my favorite bits around.
The chest and cloak looked so cool. And the weapon loadouts looked great.
Especially if you'd kitbash it with some sternguard veterans (that sheathed sword, hot damn)
Yeah. True, with Primaris captain you don't have to worry about many unused parts, but what can you do with Force Commander! I've made 4 Force Commanders, each one has different weapons, extras, look completely different from seach other and are awesome
oh yeah the metric shit ton of options were amazing, and you had so many parts to custom an entire squad. i used the eagles of the backpack as customhelmets for the terminator elites in my army nothing says tactical termiantor as much as eagleeyevision
these kits were great for conversions... i used these for my loyal spacemarines a ton... my custom stormterminators had a squadmember with thunderghhammer and maul in each hands, and my terminator hq wore the cape paintet as leather. the loss of kits like these is the biggest loss we ever had
nothing will take away from the originals but definitely do a primaris version of your first 2 HQs pls
Cringemaris
@@TheMostSlyFox hurr durr Primaris bad
I really want all models to have as much modularity as they can. Customization is so key for forming attachments to your models and making them look truly unique and it helps the table top not look all the same.
Love the two old kitbashed heroes. And yes I think you should Primaris them, I'm curious to see how they're gonna look.
Of course I'm giving name to my HQ's and some squad characters too.
That Chaos lord is nice.
And it's Chaos Undivided. :)
I don't play Eldar, but I was expecting them to make a plastic Build a Bear Autarch/Exarch with all the options of the various exarchs
Instead all the other Autarch options got legend'd and now you have one guy and that's it, what a tragedy
You make me feel so old man. I used to work at the GW store in Grapevine Mills Mall in Texas from 2006-2010. I loved it.
BY FAR my favorite video you've done so far. Loved the little action montage
I agree, Its one of the best, if not the best characters kit, Its a shame that we wouldn't see more of these.
I love updating characters for new scale or just new painting/converting skills. No better way to show the growth in your skills. I've done the same 4 times for my custom chapter master ( his next iteration will be with that new helbrecht kit as a base)
Back in the day when you could play „pimp my xyz“ :D
I really loved these multi part/option boxes. Imagine how confused I was after coming back after a ~8y break and to find a new datasheet for each SM Captain loadout.
The „you can only play what you can buy“ approach is somewhat understandable on the one hand… but on the other it limits the kitbash possibilities quite a bit :/
"There is no replacing a hobbyist's imagination." is a motto I fully support, you could even put it on a shirt!
It's cool that we have models for named characters but I don't like using them in battle. Not only does it feel odd having small battles with say Marneus Calgar present to fight 40 ork boys, but in tournaments or in deed any game, the possibility of having your Marneus Calgar come up against another players Marneus Calgar just seems... game breaking. Besides, even if using a vanilla army like Ultramarines, I wouldn't want to be just any standard Ultrmarines. They are my Ultramarines, led by me, or should I say, my proxy. The HQ should be unique and should be a proxy for yourself. I am not Marneus Calgar, I'm my own leader. That's why I am happy to buy named characters as display pieces, my army must be led by a standard Captain or Lord. And whilst even just a Primaris Captain taken straight from Indomitus will do, ideally, you want a fully customised and kit bashed Captain which stands out as yours. I love kits like the Chaos Lord. I've had 2 of the Space Marine Commander Kits which are the same idea. I lost one, but they both looked completely different. And the Cadian HQ squad is similar. Not as many options but you can give YOUR company commander a different look with a choice of heads, arms and even bodies. I'll take a unique Company Commander in battle over Creed or Yarrick. Though I own both Yarrick and Creed for display purposes because they are both so awesome.
This... This is Warhammer for me...
Honestly, I could not agree more. When everyone's army has all these named characters it stops feeling like a tabletop game and starts feeling distant from the setting, like a "what if marneus fought abaddon" theoretical experiment. It feels artificial, especially when these named characters get slain and then you feel like you have just broken the whole 40k universe.
Same in AoS where gods litter the table.
I never considered playing my named characters, with the exception of maybe Eldrad, because hes just such a beast. But really I like them as set pieces. Like if Im putting together a company of marines I like having their unique character HQs, and while I table MY guys, when they go back on the shelf, the whole company is there and you know exactly what company it is at a glance.
Ah, I see you have Marneus Calgar in your force. I have deployed his identical, but evil twin, Barneus Galcar.
Awesome video, loved how much the colours pop!
Only one lore related note… the Emperors Children (nor the other traitor legions) didn’t abandon the Codex Astartes as it didn’t exist at that point. It was put in to place after the Heresy in order to break down the legion structure and stop a single person having as much power as Horus did.
Current hero options are basically push fit models except they are harder to build. Less options than an infantry kit and way too expensive.
Illuminor szeras was a fiddly bastard to build
Great episode EOB. Excellent in several ways: great model discussion, great paint tutorial, and great EOB complete section.
Amazing how much anxiety a silly montage of Jay throwing paint at himself can bring to me
The *LIDS* secure the *LIDS!*
Me seeing your converted old HQ - Omg that’s so cool! Spits food on the couch whilst trying to chew and speak.
Hearing “I might have to make them into Primaris, let me know what you think”
Me as I spit the rest of the food out: No pitey! no remorse ! No fear !
Seeing your first HQs in primaris sounds great. They're sick btw
I love old sculpts! I reckon you should definitely recreate your kitbashed HQs in Primaris form - nothing like a bit of nostalgia and personalisation to get the hobby juices flowing! One (super nerdy) caveat: only make primaris versions if you are convinced your characters would WANT to become primaris! XD
Great video! With the exaggerated orange and red of the base, I like to think this captures the character in glorious combat conquering a planet devoted to Khorne in the Realm of Chaos.
I’m planning a conversion of Kayvaan Shrike for my Raven Guard successor chapter, the Ravagers. His name is Jerrigo Wylzynn, the Stroke of Death. As he and his chapter are known for making calculated risks that see them victorious but losing a few limbs, he ended up with a damaged voice box and an eye missing after a fierce battle with the Tyranids. He now uses a Machine Spirit to speak and is never seen without his signature two tone helmet of orange and black.
In game, he counts as a Firstborn Captain with a Jump Pack, Plasma Pistol and the Teeth of Terra on a 32mm base.
Phucking hell bro, that is BADASS, personally I'm thinking of doing either some Tau-aligned Marines or a custom chapter inspired by Draugr from Norse Mythology. Thoughts?
@@mylesmanore6197 In reference to the Rule of Cool, go with your heart and do what you think is best.
If you want to refer to a bit of purchase logic, however, you’ll need a lot of kits to make Gue’ron’vesa Space Marines loyal to the T’au Empire (the helmets, armour and guns) but there are a lot of Space Wolves parts/kits flying around and if you haven’t started sculpting pelts and robes with green stuff, you can use the latter concept as a chance to learn.
Also, you might have to make your own datasheet for Gue’ron’vesa. If you’re into that sort of stuff, go for it.

I definitely miss the options we had for a while. I’d love it if GW would at least stop putting pieces of the feet on the base rock. As to your question, why yes it would be awesome to see your firstborn marines cross the Rubicon Primaris!
Those space marine HQs are amazing! I would love to see your modern interpretation of them.
I absolutely agree with you, when it comes to naming YOUR Commander/ Character models! But I always feel, that they have to earn it. My Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour ( what a delightful coincidence 😄) has just recently killed a Nightbringer, so he has become Deimos God-eater.
I don't really like the old Terminator Lord model, but you really sold it with your colour palette! Nice work as always!
I have been preaching the terminator lord to all of my friends, it’s just such a cool and worth kit
your original character models look great
I didn't discover this hobby until recently, (I only own a battered Octarius and some 3rd Party Orks I made into a Greenskins Kill Team), but I've been browsing and honestly I prefer the early 2000s ones. It feels like you had more freedom to make it yours and now everything is just bland in my opinion.
Yeah, when you get the box sets they're usually the first prints, and so theyre all monopose. But when you get the individual kits you have a bit more customization options. For example I got the intercessor kit, and a blood angels upgrade kit, and went to town. My favorite models so far, are a marine reloading his clip, and his sergeant lookin at him with his arms out in a "Are you freaking kidding me." looking pose.
You get a lot less freedom with how you can build your models these days without bringing in extra bits or doing something quite invasive. Its quite sad
@@mxviii that's actually funny, I can imagine him saying something like "Why didn't you load BEFORE we left?!"
You throw exactly like I imagined you would 😁
Never change dude.
Awesome looking Chaos Lord. Great job. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍👍👍
I learn so much about painting from this channel
With this I'll let you know that this sounds cool!
Going to be honest here. In recent years by far the best new GW models are in Age of Sigmar. BTW your models look awesome.
Great colors my dude! Much love for you, your team and all you do~
i VAAASTLY prefer this style of kit where you can actually choose what loadout you want
i hate hate the fixed kits where you cant choose your loadout or pose at all, its not your model then, its not YOUR character
such great vibes in your videos mate!
Iv been wanting to get into chaos marines for a while now and I think this video was the final push I needed
This is super fun, love it
Those kitbashed hqs are really sweet, be be really cool to see updated versions
One (fairly) New kit that has AMAZING customization, is the Exalted Sorcerers kit, admittedly, it doesn't have a lot of options that effect game play, but it has so many flair bits, a dozen head, 2 dozen arms, and more!
That's really cool!
3:27 that power claw with him flipping "the bird" is the one, dude.
I definitely feel like theres some story behind the creation of this whether it be how it started or some mishap along the way.
OMG high school Nick and Jay or too much! Love it!
I really like how this channel has grown and I like the tone of your content! Great job EoB and Jay!
I have the same model sitting in the box 15yrs ago, now as I turned back to the game, decided to assemble him. I just magnetize the arms and the heads, to let me use him either a Lord or a Sorcere any time, with any weapon loadout for fun. I just need a 10th wpn option for him, a combi-flamer for the Tzeentch Termi Sorceret option to rumble with Rubrics. :)
Haven't finished the video yet, but YES! Take your custom HQs across the Rubicon.
But yes, more kits need options like this. Bring more choice back to the hobby, at least in GWs corner.
I love the old models, so much customisability.
Kinda wish GW would make a budget line (quick build and old style models for the old/about half current price) so that hobbiests on the not so rich side can collect again. So many people are scared off when they see the high price with no real budget options.
This turned out to be a really cool model! I think this guy would be a perfect noise marine despite the fact he’s missing the classic Mohawk and all that but I think it could be made to work!
Yes! Those custom HQs for Primaris would be excellent. I’m currently working on a heresy army for blood angels so kit bashing is what runs in my veins.
Those two HQ´s look awesome!
I do all my rims in a bright blue, easy to tell what model is mine and I can use black ( or maybe just an ink pen) to write the name of the character on it after
My most unique character is my Night Lord praetor with jump pack from FW that I use for my chaos lord in 40 k , lord Joseph Midknight has a two handed power sword from a grey knights kit and plasma pistol instead of the chain glaive and bolter the model originally came with. I also gave him a severed Night goblin head which he thinks speaks to him that he found in the warp. Does it really talk to him giving him advice when no one is looking or is it the insanity that often plagues the sons of Curze? He has no idea
i agree tho the chaos armies should be crazy lookin but i also agree that the whole army should have a unifying feature, alllll the units in the army should have a strange glow, the same colour on each one, to show that gods influence and making all the models look like one cohesive group
Recreating those old hq's sounds awesome
"Chaos Undecided" is pretty great ngl
This model got me into black legion and looks so cool!
Awesome job on this chaos Lord
Chaos Undecided: "uhhhh who are we worshipping this week boss?"
Yes, recreate them into Primaris, please. I love seeing character development, let’s see those two cross the Rubicon.
Been into the hobby since 2nd Ed 40k/5th Ed WHFB. I primarily use the old metal miniatures and bits to build my characters; sometimes I detail them using plastic components and GS, depending on the look I'm going for.
I've never really seen a need to upgrade my armies with new miniatures let alone update any of my characters.
Jay's first Necron HQ's were Finecast, my first Necron HQ was pewter
It’s such a double edged sword. I love how good they look but I do as well miss the modularity of the older hqs. Everything just looks the same nowadays.
I like your airbrush holder thingamajig!
Please please redo those HQs in Primaris, they look so cool and I would love to see how you bring them across the Rubicon Primaris.
i love the company commander kit for imperial guard. its really similar to the chaos lords kit, and mine looks unique with a power sword and plasma pistol standing on a rubble pile with his servo skull.
Sooooo, I am just starting my emperors children. And am beyond looking forward to getting this kit. Just did a chaos rhino the other day and had a ton of fun with it.
remaking your old hqs with modern skills would be awesome to see.
Powerful tutorial on power weapons, looks great
For the algorithm!
For the channel!
For the emperor!
..."There's no replacing a hobbyist's imagination." Preach.
id like thsese build-a-bear boxes to be an option along with the nicely posed models. one for each faction would be sick
Of course it is all up to you. You do not have to use the wackier chaos stuff if you do not want to. They are your minis.
I like this color scheme because I hate painting the trimmings on these and this seems to work nice with the trimmings as the base color.
Energy Weapon tutorial please… and paint a Monster … a big Squig or Dragon or something else… that would be wonderful… thanks Jay your videos always make my day and I am enjoying you positive vibes! Great stuff keep it up 👍🏾
Damn, n I was hoping to see you do some work for my legion! I bet your lightning effects are awesome!
AVE DOMINUS NOX!
Love CSM. Looking great, but can't get enough of your transitions, thanks for the video.
No, there is a super easy way to power weapon. Contrast paint, slop on a thick layer, let it settle. No joke, it leaves fantastic power weapon finishes. You did a great job here with paint though.
this mini is so sick! Those colors look so good!
definitely make those HQs cross the rubicon!
Damn J, that’s a beautiful paint job bro
My favorite chaos marines were the old metal chaos renegades from the late 80's and early 90's. Those mini's had personality because they lacked the cookie-cutter sameness we've seen from most chaos releases since then.
My custom chaos army is nothing but metal 80's chaos ...all 120 of them and still only half painted
@@ronaldsecks3269 I salute you! I too have mostly RT Chaos Marines in my force
that double chainsaw is gnarly. you GOTTA use it on somethin'
Sounds cool redo them !! Also little baby jay!!!
I'm just getting into model building and those HQ's look like a lot of fun to build. A pity they don't make them anymore. I'd love to make a Mechanicus HQ for my Adeptus Mechanicus army, wip
I don't know why I just watched a montage of you throwing paint at yourself in slow motion, but I don't regret that I just watched a montage of you throwing paint at yourself in slow motion.
I still have my Chaos Terminators, Chaos Marines, Abaddon the Despoiler, Khorn Berzerkers, Kharn The Betrayer and Fabius Bile, all from the late 90's
I recently got this box, reminds me of when I first got into Warhammer back in 3rd, ahhhhhh the days of 3rd 😅 I digress, the box is amazing but by far the most standout feature?!? The power fist complete with middle finger up to the imperium! Love it! Great video as always!
Edit: do the remake of the old HQ 😁
Love the new intro, music absolutely slaps.
I am new to the channel just here, in the last 2 weeks just started to watch. I enjoy your content thank you
Pretty cool, I'd have thrown more gold on though, Emperors Children love their gold.
That looks sick dude, nice work!
I have this model mostly to provide some different weapons to rescue my decades old abaddon model which has lost parts over the years. I'll get the new model eventually, so the old one can become a generic Lord, the same for the arihman model that lost its staff over the years.
I happen to be doing emperor's children too, so the video is a great reference, though I'm going more towards purple rather than pink. Chaos gives so much artistic freedom and that is chaoses greatest strength really.
Im going to go out of my way to make a Chaos lord exactly like yours just out of spite.
I'm actually looking at getting my first ever minis soon, this guy and the noise marine with the guitar are the two im looking at getting first, or some death guard because of course. With possibly a small team set to try and learn the basics of hand painting. I just thought this set had parts for either of the ones shown on GW's site and a couple extra weapon options. Buy now i kinda wanna get a few of these guys because of all of the custom options you get.
Ah yes that eob complete dopamine ngl though that chaos marine looks pretty neat for a traitorous heretic
