- In this video I have a look at a customers 2013 Hyundai Veloster that has the engine light on. Codes indicate there is a small EVAP leak. Let's hook up the Avoca-Smkoa and see where the leak is. -Enjoy!

Gotta love the red battery cable for ground. You had me scared for a second.
I saw that and thought, boy great idea there.
My brother's car got its entire wiring harness melted because of that, a buddy was jumping their car using his and didn't pay attention. Should be illegal to have red ground cable.
Did you just put black on red and red on black?? Ohh...
Thats says allot for the quality when cant event get industry wide color codes for battery ground and power right
Before he made the connection, I was staring at that wiring wondering if it was a positive-ground system. Nope. Just worked over by a DIY experience.
30 yrs ago I lived in a small town in nw Florida. Mechanic there named Billy, one of the best mechanics I've ever known, knew that I couldn't afford much of anything. He would diagnose the problem on my vehicle, charge me very little for doing it, give me tips on how to repair it. I'd go buy a Chilton or Haynes manual and repair it myself. Wonderful guy. Any time I heard someone needed a mechanic, I'd send them to him. Was the least I could do. I wasn't the only one he did things like that for.
I had a local mechanic help me the same way.
This was the best ending ever. Got the beer and the RUclips play button. He really is human.
i'm kind of a big deal around here
He has earned that silver Google play button plaque 5x over.
Drinking a Yuengling Lager at the end too. That's why you're the best Eric, thanks for the video!
Rubber pads between coil and module's miss that problem girl
"That's when you know... they've given up on you." That was spit-take worthy, there. Thanks as always, Eric.
I use petroleum jelly as assembly lube when building transmissions at work.i walk into a store buy 2 big tubs of Vaseline and walk out.the cashier always looks horrified .
Lmao 🤣
I love it haha
Do you give a smile and a wink? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Saying "it's for a tranny!" would ice that cake.
😳
"baby oil and some coffee creamer, and she doesn't even ask". Quite a good companion you got there, Mr O. Laughed out loud at this one
Next time ask her to buy a box of Trojans, see if that elicits a comment.
My wife wouldn't ask because she would probably think we were gonna have some vodeo doe doe, but either item wouldn't really be out of play in that regard...
Eric oils up his six pack abs to look like Putin
the interactions between Mr. and Mrs. O are a huge part of the SMA video's appeal.
My guess is it's not the first time he has sent her to the store for baby oil. It would seem Vanessa has been around cars and her car guy most of her adult life. She knew why he needed it. :D
Gotta love the red colored batt negative lead =)
No joke
Ya, I was freaking out a bit when he hooked up the black charger wire to the red ground wire... Felt kind of dumb after realizing it was ok because it was a red ground wire. Felt way better when he almost hooked the smoke machine backwards.
Was wondering if it was an MG for a second.
@@karlaerdmann7830 Yeah, really bad practice -- sends all the wrong visual clues, and is about the quickest way to ensure someone, someday, is going to connect a battery charger/jumper-cables around the wrong way =^/
@@thetable123 LoL.... I can feel you ~ I used to own a Humber Super Snipe =)
So you got the Rona Eric, I'm glad you're ok. The Rona hit our house and took my father and my wife of 38 years with. My wife used to alert me when you post a new video. She will yell, Hey babe, your bromance just posted another video! I miss them dearly. Your video always put a smile on my face. Thanks Eric. P.S. can't wait to get my zip up SMA hoodie.
I'm glad that SMA gives you a bit of a laugh and great memories
Eric, we could easily hear that leak noise between the 12:30 and 13:00 of the video, also can't blame the customer for wanting to replace their own parts, at least you diagnosed the problem, that is what counts
Nice to see your plaque in the background whence editing your video. Always humorous, like the memaw tricks.
im sure some of use would love to see and hear bout "all the memaw tricks" she taught you.... how's bout it!!?!
Hi, Mr. O. Granny's hose trick worked very well. Another similar trick is grampa's stick trick. Get something similar to a 1/4 inch dowel. (It doesn't have to be straight.) Touch one end to find a noise and press the other end to your ear. It works to find engine taps, knocks, and squeaks. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
Love the evap videos, great job, nice tip using rubber hose to "hear" the leak. Great job Eric O
Thank you Eric! My son bought a 2013 Veloster Turbo in the summer of 2019. It's always had this EVAP code, and we were at the point where we were going to have to have it smoke tested to find the leak. When I saw your video and you spoke about the TSB I was pretty sure this could be the problem. Before ordering any parts we visually inspected the vapor canister on his car and sure enough it was cracked just like the one on the video and showed signs of wetness around the crack. Based off of all of the other components testing ok and the condition of the EVAP canister we replaced the canister. It took about three to four times driving it for it to complete all of the monitors but it finally completed the EVAP monitor with no problems. Thank you Eric O for all of the great content and helping us home mechanics work on our own cars.
That trick with the rubber hose went rather well. Thanks Eric!
Eric, you've got to write a book and call it "What my mee maw taught me"
That trick with the heater hose worked much better than I expected. Great tip, thanks!
Love the adult beverage at then end. It's one of my favs too!
Near the end.. I was like - whaaaa? … then, as usual, mr O totally calms my panic … and tells me.. if I can do it -😊😊
Every time my wife asks me to buy cucumbers I also buy Vaseline because I don't want the cashier to think I am a vegan...
Now that is funny right there. Yep, already copied, ready to paste.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey that hose listening trick worked pretty good
Love a cold Yuengling after work!! Enjoy brother!!
Great video! Thanks for the happy ending! Another “smoke test” diagnostic along with a poor man’s stethoscope. I love it!
I miss watching you working on the crusty cars.
Loud and clear Eric O!
Awesome RUclips plaque in the background!
When they don’t ask questions, you know they trust you…
I'll have to try that hose trick in the future, didn't think of that....
Using the hose on phone mic was awesome!.
That is truly sad, Mrs O prepares those fabulous lunches, over which we are all jealous, & you do not taste the fruits of her efforts. So pack it up, send it to me, I"ll provide a full culinary report. 🗽🗽👌👌
I probably seen a hundred of your videos and every single time you say.. "thanks for waaatching"... I chuckle
The best comedy I've seen all week.
"Is it coming out of the gas hole?" Nice.
I had a brand new 2012 Velostar and it was the single most trouble-ridden car I have ever owned. Can you believe the harmonic balancer fell off in the middle of the road on a brand new car? The bolt sheared off. Dealer wouldn't even get me a rental and it could have been a deadly situation on the freeway. Headlights burned out once a year (both left and right) and there was a recall on the sunroof (random shattering) and brakes. The automatic transmission shifted like a bucking horse and I was told repeatedly that was 'normal'. I could go on, but between the dealer and the manufacturer, I'll never own another Hyundai. Even the 'required service' intervals (advertised in the service area of the dealership) was a complete ripoff with the threat of voiding your warranty if you don't pay for 'inspections' every 30,000 miles (each one about twice the cost of the other for VISUAL inspections that result in the dealer making warranty money from the manufacturer. Talk about double dipping!) Got a new 2013 V6 Mustang a year later and it has never needed a repair (just maintenance items). Still have the Mustang, with the shorter warranty that was never needed, and dumped the Veloster with the 10 year warranty that was constantly needed!
Shit, what do you expect? It is a Hyundai!
that is how Korea is getting back at United States for calling a war a Police Action
New Hyundai, harmonic balancer fell off, sorry bud, that's a normal wear item so it's not covered.
@@SimpleLife1971 Just the idea that a dealer tech would call a harmonic balancer, a "wear" item, is just ridiculous on its face. That's like buying a new car, and the next day the wheels fall off. Then the dealer tells you, tires are a "wear" item, sorry not covered. Or maybe buying a new car and the door falls off the hinges. Sorry, the door is a wear item.
@@jtjones4727 My wife and two daughters bought NEW Hyundai's including their 10 year bumper to bumper warranty.
I an attest this additional coverage which cost them an additional $1,350 at the time covered NOTHING in the first 3 years of ownership. My youngest daughter had both front strut coil springs BREAK within the first 18 months and they were considered a NORMAL WEAR ITEM.
Next to politicians and lawyers, car salesman and car dealerships are the scum of the earth and will literally lie/swindle you out of thousands for profit and commission.
The hose thing was funny! Who else would think to let us hear a leak with a piece of hose. Cheers.
Meemaw sure had a lot of tricks!
Great video Mr O! I kinda miss the real long videos. I know your a busy man so I will take what I can get. You and Mrs O are like the favorite part of the family I only get to spend a little time with. Your awesome! By the way, I got into the mechanic business because of your videos. All certified as if yesterday. When you say, if I can do it, you can do it is my chant now. Thanks for all you do!
Good luck with your new career!
@@MosinMan76254 thank you Sir!
Thanks for not leaving us hangin
Appreciate that
Thank you for experimenting with ways to get your audience into the action...that hose definitely made the leak audible :)
That's awesome that we get to hear the evap leak via a piece of rubber hose. You taught me a new trick I didn't know today, about using the hose like a stethoscope. Now I've used long pull handles and extensions and what not to listen for knocks and pings through an engine block or valve cover or head, also like a stethoscope.
Thanks Eric. Yours are the first videos I play when I see new ones. You and Mark Dice. Thanks!
Another informative automotive technician video absorbed into my brain. Gracias, Eric.
just when i thought i couldnt like eric anymore i see he drinks yuengling. superb taste my friend
I am not 100% sure if it applies to the vlosters but when i worked as a hyundai tech for a short while, there existed a TSB/recall for the canisters cracking around the mounting bolts creating evap leaks.
The new updated canister has brass inserts instead of mild steel.
Good call, it looks like it does. TSB 17-01-003-1
I just came down to the comments to see if anyone had mentioned it. I've replaced so many for this reason!
Excellent start to my night! SMA action!
Avoca Smoker strikes again. i was with a lady friend at our local DG. I grabbed a bottle of baby oil and she gave me the look. Then asked WTF is that for. I tried to explain how the evap smoke machine works and what it is used for. Again with the look. I had to show her one of your videos using the Avoca smoker to keep me out of the dog house. 🤣🤣🤣
There is a recall out for that canister. Covers 12-16s TSB 17-01-003-1
Eric.. of course there's always a HAPPY ENDING!!!... especially if it includes baby oil and liquid hand soap LOL... thanks also for the hose air leak tip too... Stu from New Zealand
Always enjoy your videos. Humor and smarts. I know a lot more about how new cars work now just watching these videos. Thanks.
Y'all are one of the best automotive videos on here..also No Nonsense Knowhow hes one of my favorites too..Chris and Jen.
Another fantastic vid from SMA. 🙂
So always you give amazing content.
I always like to follow along, learning tons just from watching your videos. Don't ever think there's something you're doing, that's boring. Never! Everything you film is very interesting. Keep it coming. 👍
Great video as always 👍 from the "PR of NY".....too funny!
Thanks for posting. I just found an evap leak, Santa Fe . Same deal. Blocked vent with vise grips, used smoke machine. Cracked around bolt hole, had moisture too. Excellent video, really helped.
Awesome using the hose, best vid yet!
Awesome video. Great demo of the tube trick.
So interesting how you track down the problems. Love it!
The Avoca Smoka does it again! With the rust building under that car, that canister is just the start of the parts changing.
Nice Diag Mr O.
Another cool tip - the hose to hear the leak. Another great video!
Eric O: Great Video, as always thanks for taking the time to show clearly & explain what you are doing & your deductive reasoning.
Awesome video! Love the trick with the heater hose.
Oh yeah. Great video and thank you for the continued inspiration.
Greetings Mr. And Mrs.O hope all is well and thank you for another great educational video...y'all keep em coming..👍🤙🤘🍻
Cool trick with the hose. Learned something new! Thanks Eric!
Great job as usual today and I learned some more things to complicate my world. Do my own stuff and family because of been messed with at other shops and dealer service. Appreciate you man and marvelous helper!
Love the buzzed outro. Rockin' the yuenglings.
Another great video. And nothing like a cold brew at the end of the day!
Yueng ling .....gotta love it.....keep up the great work👍👍
another great video compliments SMA .....thank you Eric ....great idea for the hose.... air leak amplification identifier
Nice to see the play button award. Congratulations.
Eric O at his best. Short and sweet with some great practical tips! TY. Smoke, smoke, smoke! Do you see the smoke? Lol....
Love your videos especially the Yuengling can. My fav beer.
Been using the hose trick for years, great advice!
I only just came across this channel while I'm in isolation at home with Covid (very mild dose fortunately). Great channel, been rolling back through lots of previous videos and have subscribed.
Thanks for the closure. 😀
Little JB Weld on that evap canister and shes good as new!
We could totally hear it. That was great.
Nice job Eric! Hope your eye is healing well!
Gotta love a sense of humour another great story
that hose trick is awesome buddy!!!!!
(singing) I heard it thru the heater hose, and I'm just about to lose my mind, honey honey yeah. Great idea!
like the hose idea i never seen any one do that thank u
I was amazed I could hear the leak ,very good
That hose trick me maw taught you worked good. Bless her heart give her a hug for us she gave good advice.
Wow. Hose trick was fantastic.
If this client is fortunate enough to have this master work on your car I would have let Mr. O go to work on it. How many of us living elsewhere would love the opportunity to drop our car off and know your not only getting the work done right but with someone who cares about your pocketbook and you. Blessings Mr O
Another awesome video. Have NO idea what you did but VERY entertaining…
As always great video
Thanks for not leaving us hanging...
Eric O love your video's. nice when you have Miss's O and the kid's in the video's. your doing everything right.
Thanks for the video Mr O! Hope you get back your smeller soon. Took me 6 months to get back to near normal. Had the rona when it was brand new. Jan 2020. I have a rather large snoz too.
South Main Auto is the #1 place I go on the internet for a Happy Ending. 😊
Reminds me of when I was a teenager working on my own engines. You hear a knock, take a long bladed screwdriver, place the tip in the vicinity of the noise and place the handle against your ear. Worked every time!
You’ve got a gem in Mrs. O, as I’m sure know 👍👍👍😎😎😎. Great video 🤠🤠🤠
Thanks for the Hose-O-Phone leak finder trick. I will use that!
Hell yeah Eric we could hear a good I could that's pretty neat trick thanks for the tip keep it up Mr Eric and Mrs o
You do good work
Hose idea to hear sound was a good idea.
In the day we also used wood battens, soda bottles, socket extensions, and someone with a good set of ears (before we listened to too much rock and roll). 😂
I like your choice of hydration, Mr. O 🍻
