Kia Sedona: P0456 EVAP Very Small Leak
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 авг 2024
- Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this 2009 Kia Sedona to try and diagnose the EVAP system. The check engine light is on with a code P0456 "Very Small EVAP Leak." We quickly discover that the tank is to full to diagnose with the smoke machine! However he does show you a very common issue with these and the most likely spot for them to leak. -Enjoy!

I am impressed with this mechanic's approach to the problem. First, he has the knowledge. Next he uses his knowledge to methodically diagnose the problem. And even after he sees the rusty filler neck, he doesn't assume he has found the problem. He discusses what he knows with the customer and lets them decide if they want to change the cap. A true professional. Great work.
Love that you stick by your diagnosis here. Sometimes what you need from your mechanic is a little bit of confidence.
Awesome. was watching you shooting your M&P 9mm when the notification for this one popped up. I'm glad you did post this, even without proof. As a DIYer, I didn't know about the fuel level, but it makes perfect sense. Now I know, should I ever have an evap code that needs smoked, to wait till the fuel is at a low enough level for a proper test. Your failure to 100% find the problem taught me just as much as a confirmed fix. As always, love the channel and thanks for posting the video.
Most have a range where it will run the EVAP monitor. A general rule is 1/4 tank to 3/4 tank.
I really like and appreciate that Eric O. wanted to show us definitively the cause of the problem. He did everything he could do but all the factors (like gas tank full) were not in his favor. I always enjoy SMA videos because he wants to show his viewers the 100% problem with no guessing. Parts changers are just no kewl. Thanks Eric!
Thanks kenneth
wish i had a mechanic around me like this guy. i have the same issue on my kia forte didnt think id be able to fix it without the proper tools...at least i see what the process is and know im not getting bullshitted when i go to a shop. great video thank you
Great video Eric. It's awesome to see a technician who knows what he is doing and honest enough to not rip off the customer. Here's a crazy question. Do you ever run out of smoke in your smoke machine, and if you do how do you refill it?
Love awaking up to watch your new videos, my morning wake up call
I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. I disconnect the purge and check for vacuum. Then go to the filler neck and check for rust and dirt. After cleaning the neck, they are always filthy, I put a little silicone on the o-ring for the fuel cap if it's not damaged, it's usually dry as a bone. Easy fix for less than 30 minutes
Another video, cool - this is better than watch reruns on television during summer hiatus........Keep it up - Thanks!!!!
Great tip!! I would have never thought about it being full and not have any smoke out the filler tube.
JOHN HUFNAGEL how about putting the smoke directly into the gas tank and then closing it quickly
makes my day to see a new video from you
That dam rust, I am lucky I live in Australia tho I am close to the snow we don't have that problem much and no salt used on roads.
I do have to say, watching your videos have helped me a lot here, (I am mechanically minded but old schooled)
And here the local authorised dealer wants to charge $150 per hr and a min of 2hr just to look at a code and it was going to take 3 weeks before they would even look at it.
I all ready known what the problem was and what code it was going to be but no that's what they wanted, I got a OBD2 controller and yep it was just the code I knew of and had fixed it already.
Since the car was a proton no other person would touch it , it it only cost me $5 for the parts and $25 for the tool, I was also able to see there was another factory gauge fault that I had reported before but they claimed I was wrong, (now legal are dealing with the company)
But watching your videos do help the small person, it has even allowed me helped some others with tracing there problems too.
Thanks.
I've got a 2011 Sedona with the same code. Hooked up the smoke machine, after blocking off the vent...if there's smoke, it's really subtle. I see none.
Used a die grinder to polish my inlet mirror smooth, and applied brake grease to the cap.
Now, we play the waiting game.
Hey Eric, congrats on 81k subscribers!! Hopefully soon you'll be at a Million!!
Thanks man
Hey Eric, nothing wrong with the power of deduction .... definitely nailed it again. Vote 1 Eric O ....
I had a 2006 Chevy Equinox that I bought with a blown head gasket to resale. It was missing the gas cap and had a history code for large evap leap. I tried to save a couple bucks and bought a supposed oem cap off ebay and it still had the same code and smoke test showed large smoke leak at cap with the new ebay "oem" cap. This is a southern car in the south with not a hint of rust or corrosion anywhere. Anyway, this ebay cap felt very weak and would release with the slightest counter clock spring pressure. I went to Oreilley and got a cap and had the same issue with how extremely easy it was to remove.
Finally, I broke down and went to the dealer and paid 8 dollars more for a real oem gas cap. As soon as I twisted it on, it felt different and when I tried to remove it, it took substantial force to get it to release. I put the smoke machine on the system and closed the vent valve and no more leaks! I took out the caliper and measured the differences and it became apparent. There is the rubber seal and a plastic lip that this seal goes around on the cap and the plastic lip on the cheap, aftermarket caps was about .003in larger in diameter than the real oem cap which prevented the rubber seal from making solid contact and is why the y were so easy to remove.
Awesome video! Thanks for posting!!! They check our engine light here too (Ontario, Canada).
From a fellow Northeast US, Thank you for this. most videos just show to replace the gas cap.
I thought for sure the brakeleen was coming out after that rust, but I was wrong. Maybe looking out for the paint job. Great Video as always!
I got a Hyundai Elantra with a cracked charcoal canister too. Thanks for the tips Mr O!!!
Experience prevails, good call I'm sure the customer is happy.
Yep the light is still out and all is well
Another informative video added to your library. Surely this will help lots of people. (I've been away without internet so I'm catching up).
Good one Eric O, I've seen this many times before on Buicks Century and lesabre. It's the thing here in ontario Canada when it comes to dealing with rust. That darn road salt causes a lot of problems which leads to rust.
Yep those cars do it all the time
An S M.A video on my birthday. Life is good. Thanks Mr O
Well Happy B-Day!!
Thanks
5:38 I'm about to pinch it off myself. Thanks for the "regular" uploads!
HAHAHA! "TMI", as the kids say! :D
Eric, we love your videos whether you prove the diagnosis or not!
Well I always try to and it bugs me when I can't
you are a posting madman....we are spoiled. THANK YOU!
I am trying to keep up.
I use a little oil or vaseline on my cap seals. old gas station mechanic taught me that one. I've never seen one rust like that though. and I'm in the rust belt. nice work as always!
should use silicone grease instead.
I thought you shouldn't put pertroleum-based lube on there as the o-rings will break down. I've used plumber's grease (silicone) with good results. Heck, spray around the area with rust protector (ATC50 or Corrosion X).
it never seemed to cause any issues. but I'll start using silicone from now on. thanks!
Good diagnosis Mr O,keeping the rust belt cars going!!!
Good video. When in doubt keep it simply and yes we in Georgia consider the "Money Light" extra illumination when driving at night. #norust #noinspections
Que sere , sera ! I believe you, thanks for showing the video.
Not a big deal that the diagnoses was incomplete. What really helps is people now are aware of a potential problem and how they can be pro-active. Great one as usual.
Yes sir. Gotta keep that rust off the neck!
Did you change out the gas cap too? Seemed like that would have been a good idea since it wasn't sealing that tightly.
SATAMAN Schmidt did you watch the video? lol
Yes, I did. And, that sure looked like the original gas cap was still in place at the end of the video when he was Sil-Glyding the lip of the filler neck. So, what exactly was the point of your rather worthless comment?
SATAMAN Schmidt if you would have paid attention when he removed the tether he simply just hung it on the back of the door. he hadnt swapped out the old one yet.
Awesome as usual watching now
I knew many PCM's won't do the EVAP test if the tank is full but I didn't realize you couldn't smoke test the filler neck if the tank is full. Thanks for posting this!
Yes but you have to remove the cap. I mention that in the vid.
Right. I just didn't realize the smoke wouldn't make it up the neck from the rest of the system if the tank was too full...makes sense now that you discuss it but I just didn't realize it.
Some systems are like that and some are not. Depends on the design.
We do have to have emissions inspected on cars each year in Georgia. The inspection stations are linked directly to the state data base so, when you buy a license plate each year they know if the car has been inspected and passed or not. It can be a real pain in the back side here also, if your car fails.
Yep same system here
Eric, you didn't test the vent valve! But yeah I've done a few of these and I've had the rusty filler neck but I've also seen a few Hyundais and kias with cracked canisters.
Growing up in the Watertown/Fort Drum area, we had 3-4 vehicles that had this problem. If the car had a steel filler neck and a small evap leak, you just sanded the neck before inspection.
I just ordered a Bates cap for kia 02 optima. Use obd to clear ecl
I had terrible EVAP issues with a Skoda Octavia VRS (basically a MK5 Golf GTI with a different body shell) it had the 2.0TFSI engine, previous owner was overfilling the fuel tank and the excess fuel was filling the charcoal canister. Simple resolution stop at one click when pumping the fuel.
Modern tanks an evap systems are definitely not designed to be filled to the brim. With some it can even damage them by causing the evap canisters AC to break up and clog crap up.
So what should be done I have an engine ljne code p0456 and I actually do the over filling after one click so would I need to replace the whole charcoal cannister
Eric, you should run for president. The way you fix things, America would be great again.
From what dimension are you from " America has always been great"
Mr. Nobody
I see you are one of those butthurt Hildabeast voters/snowflakes
Mr. Nobody haha, its a troll comment. there are no countries anymore, this is planet moneyball. there is just one country, at the head are international bankers. they seem to have a money vacuum installed over every city.
we are like 50/220ish in education. there are 40 terrible other stats that make propaganda based comments like yours quite harmful. i like how you were referred to as butthurt. hahaha. the only thing were great at is the fact that we spend more than the next 26 countries combined in military budget, yet are less free and more subject to war than ever before.
Federal gov't ain't a machine.
opl500 no, their completely incompetent, who m has been corrupted since before the federal reserve was instituted.
Screw it bro..things aren't always 100% absolute in life. Sometimes you gotta roll the 🎲 great video 👍
i am with you on recreating the fault its th bst way to know you are right with the fix
Yep but in some case we just cant :(
i am a tech in the uk sometimes w just have to let our xp over rule wanting to make sure we right so the customer gets the fix
certain cases not easy to do depending the fault that is
Yeah man I hear that!
Hey Eric, would you mind explaining to me why you couldn't siphon out some gas with a hose of some kind? Maybe a thin one for like airline tubing for an aquarium or something? Is that too risky a maneuver nowadays? Is there like some antitheft type rig on the filler necks and what not?
Good call, Eric. If that wasn't the problem it soon will be.
You know what time is it???? Is Eric O. hope you had a great weekend and got some sleep??? Concise content, awesome content. " Yo Do you have any SMA Coffee Mugs or Shirt for sale anywhere" I didn't see any on your Amazon store???
Look in the description box. I may have a shirt or two
Excellent Video! You did right to just go for the cap, the proof is right there in the weak cap and rusty lip. Besides, it wasn't anywhere forward of the canister, so there really was very few other places that it could be. Even if it wasn't the cap & lip, it soon would have been, so that was not a waste of money or an unneeded repair.
Yep customer is happy and it has been a while now and the light never came back on. I call it fixed.
you have it fixed, it's always the case if you needed to put a fuel pump in the tank is always is full. good job. ps any garden going yet.
garden going in this weekend :D
A very effective use of smoke and mirrors!
After sanding I'd run a film of super glue on the lip. Along with creating a plastic barrier it will fill in the pores in the metal for a smoother sealing surface and should last several years. I've done this w/ brake, fuel line, ect... when I see those blisters through the epoxy coating BEFORE there is a leak with good results.
I have 178K miles on a Mazda in TN. Originally a GA car. Can confirm rust isn't much of a thing down here. Granted, it's an MX5 with a lot of aluminum, but still.
More EVAP repairs please!
And other great video with information to know even tho living in the sunshine belt
Of course you should post it! We are knowledge junkies, Uncle Eric!
Every little bit counts... Geez!
Thanks Eric. I was hoping you weren't going to grab the scotchbrite on the pneumatic tool. lol
Is this the same Sedona that had the crappy starters? On another note I love the recent uploads. Keep up the great work Eric.
Yes sir
I worked in an auto salvage yard/pick a part and we had more than one car catch on fire and burn to the ground, as it were, and never blow up. Had a bus type camper with a propane tank on it that burned, didn't blow up. Not saying it can't but I never witnessed it happen. Easy enough fix yeah? Thanks for the video.
Thanks for deciding to post anyway; even the comment about silicone lube (vs. petroleum based) is a useful tip!
ever get a p 2189 on one of these? good stuff
I have a 2010 Sedona. I had a stuck closed purge valve. I replaced the one next to the motor and the one next to the canister now my check engine says I have a evap leak that wasnt there before. Cojld it be a bad gas cap?
Great video, also could you do a big truck video?
Hi Eric, i think you fixed it, but what i was gonna suggest is, I think if you use a snap on modis or verus etc, you can turn the valve on and off permanently not toggle, i'm not sure on that but think so, i have a feeling the valves both shut when you start up to do a pressure /vacuum test on the system, but i dont know how long that lasts for before it goes back to normal...Fred in UK.
Actually the Virus does very little on this vehicle that is why I used the Autel. 99% of the time if the Autel can not do it neither can the Snap-On
Well i think at the end of the day, as we say over here, if the light went off after you cleaned the tank rim, it must be ok, i suppose you could always stick 12 volts across the vent solenoid, i think one terminal is live, so i suppose you could ground out the other side...but i'm sure its ok now.....
I have this same code on a 2010 Sedona. This is an informative video but unfortunately it's not clear what hose he hooks the smoke machine to.
Man, that rust belt is merciless.
Nice !
Another fabulous vid. Has the Verus fallen out of favor lately?
Yeah it is on the back burner
I asked this question on your Facebook site, so here goes again. I've read a few articles lately about not topping off the gas tank when refueling. They said just stop when the pump automatically clicks off otherwise there maybe a chance on damaging the EVAP canister or the EVAP system, your thoughts on this, thanks.
I 100% agree. I have fixed man swamped EVAP cans from over fueling. Especially on Toyota's for some reason.
Could the ethanol gas cause the corrosion? But cool...simple fix. oh, and THANK YOU! Got my SMA decal today! :)
Don't worry Eric, weve seen more than enough of your work to easily trust your judgement.
Wheeew good ;)
I wish that would have worked on my Buick. Had a leaky filler neck collar.
Hi, I have code P0456 but no check engine light and smog test failed, what should I be looking at?
Using a block of beeswax on the filler cap tank neck seals the neck and prevents rust.
That is a great tip
I love South Carolina no inspections on my vehicle mechanic let its good but I'm sure the scan tool would crash with all the emission failures 🤣
I didn't understand the part where you connected the vacuum gauge to the solenoid purge valve. Were you looking to make sure the vacuum gauge received and held vacuum?
making sure it was not leaking when commanded off is all
Interesting coincidence - my niece called the other day saying her '04 Suzuki Aerio failed inspection on an evap leak code. Too bad it's a 4 hour or so drive to your shop...I don't have a smoke machine.
it's not impossible to light up a filler neck, I seen it happen when my bud was looking in his, had the cap off in the dark, his brother lit a lighter real close said u need a light sparked it, bam burned his eye brows off, it was a 80's cutlass with the filler neck under the plate in the middle of the trunk lid.
98 Civic with small evap leak code that only comes on when outside temperatures are cold. Smoke machine didn't show any leaks. Warmer days the system passes checks no problem. Anyone ever encounter same issue?
Not going to use any brake cleaner?
Is it possible that P0456 can cause the P0420 code??
I don't understand why you did not empty the fuel tank to a ok level. While doing other work. And come back latter to run the smock test. Like your videos.
did any other cars with evap leaks have rusted filler necks also? Is it a common occurence?
Very common. As are cracked and rotted lines. On many GM truck/SUVs the stupid vent valves like to rust as well.
Just passed the OBD II Inspection with a gross evap leak, the system in my car only sets the CEL after 2 drive cycles. I cleared the codes, ran a drive cycle then put er through the inspection, = PASS, see ya next year.
And you're proud of that? Remarkable.
He should be. He now has more money in his pocket to feed his family!
I know ... so terrible of him ...
Smitty Smithsonite
Every repair channel has a resident arm-chair know it all. There's no arguing with him, or he will pop off at the mouth on how much he has done to improve the PLANET
Just because he said something I may just swap my carb compliant cat for a test pipe, see how he likes that...
Basic diy components, one flat file and a tube of silicone grease and Bob's yer uncle !!
Yes sir!
Eric can you describe the smell of the undercoating on the Toyota please
Like a light burning oil for the first few days?
South Main Auto Repair thx eric
hey Eric, What do you think about the Autel 905 scanner, and launch 129 scan tool
I have never used them
thanks
Nice fix and in Georgia I have no idea what that red stuff is.
Oh come on now I can box some up and ship it down if you want!
HAHA that's okay. The Georgia Post Office would probably call in the swat team for the unknown substance & blow it up :D
BWAHAHAHA! I would expect that reaction up here in MA too. :D
Hayward's Automotive look under the grass. I think they call it clay down there. Lol
HAHA Grass...what's that? I grow weeds b/c they require less water and are green almost year long. We have awesome dirt track racing b/c of that clay.
Get this code on our scion every 3-4 years now. Bad gas cap each time.
What if silicone lube ends up in gas, would it foul up oxygen sensor?
the small amount used there, is likely less than the contaminates in the gas to start with :)
Are these smoke machines safe to use on an (empty) automotive A/C system to help find leaks? Yet, another cool video btw, thanks!
They are very low pressure so it likely would not be much help
Maybe you can fill the system up with smoke, then hit it with nitrogen or argon ... or 134a (shhhh! Don't tell the EPA ... :D )? Not sure if that would work or not ... never tried it.
you wouldn't want the smoke "oil" or the moisture from air pumped into the system.
put in a small amount of gas and pressurize with nitrogen, that should be more than enough for a sniffer leak detector to go off.
I wasn't sure if the smoke machine would work for A/C leaks. Thanks for all the responses and tips.
Why do people down vote these videos? I have the same code on my car. I just need one of the vape thingies to smoke out the gremlins. Haha
Rebecca Silverman well hello Rebecca
I've caught myself accidentally thumb downing videos when scrolling down on my phone to read comments.
Hahah well we can't make videos to make every one happy. Your best bet as opposed to buying a smoke machine is just to find a reputable shop to diagnose it for you IMO
I think it just comes down to " some people's children ". What more can you say. If Eric ever stops making videos it will be a sad day.
You can make your own leak tester for under $30. All you need is a clean unused paint can and cover from Home Depot, some pneumatic fittings, some Kanthal wire, a wick, some 16 g wire, battery clamps, some 5/8 tubing, and some mineral oil. Plenty of videos on You Tube show you how to make one. It took me a couple of hours.
Think that smoke machine will fill an entire passenger compartment? Ivan could have used it a couple months back when he was chasing a water intrusion issue on a Subaru. Could have made a lot of funny outtakes in the process.
Haha cheech and chong style!
Ivan has one of the same machines. Check the videos back about a month or so.
South Main Auto Repair "Up in smoke... thats where my money goes, in my hair and in my eyes and up my nose"
yay
How about p0455 on a 2010 kia Sedona
Yep true...P0455 is gas cap....thank you autozone
nice one. what happened to your little red car?
Still there just no time is all
We get it Eric, you vape 💨
Lol not really
Hi Eric. My name is Alex. I wood like to make appointment in your shop. To do smoke test and check EVAP system on my Elantra 2001.
That rust Eric as a vehicle owner, would give me the shits. As a mechanic, rust is your money light and keeps food on the table. One needs to own an all aluminum car to live in your area. Enjoying your tubes, regards Stewart.
Funny thing is, this salt the put down turns aluminium to powder faster than steel.
South Main Auto Repair Wow, serious stuff! Stewart.
It's madness!
👍
a brass file .... haha, that's a good one. Used for filing down Styrofoam?
There are a whole range of hardened brass (bronze) tools available for those that work in explosive environments. Sparks are a especially bad thing when working around grain dust or plastics. Much more flammable and explosive than gasoline.
I am very aware of brass tools used in hazardous locations. Brass would be way too soft to make a file that would cut steel. And brass is very different than bronze. Bronze is not "hardened" brass. Two different alloys. Copper & zinc make brass. Copper & tin make bronze.
I thought he was going to be a real man and go after that filler neck with a Scotchbrite cookie wheel. Guess he's not that crazy.
SATAMAN Schmidt saw a guy on youtube once using an angle grinder to cut a hole in the floor to get to his fuel pump. you cant teach stupid. I believe he even tack welded it after.
Here i was hoping Eric was gonna use Fluid Film or Krown T40 on that gas cap ring. Drat.
Come on man I gave you 2 whole vids of the good stuff!!
ROFL! Eric Just like Adrenaline....." too much is not enough ..." (frame of Reference Bush-Adrenaline)
I am just kidding as i am sure you know. I actually had told friends who know i am a rust proofing maniac
there is this mechanic in NY state and he is going to make a krown video and i am literally so excited.
I very much enjoyed both, my fav SMA videos by far, even tho they weren't on fixing.
They are the most comprehensive in detail of any krown video on the internet including from krown themselves.
Thank You very very much for doing them.
But any time you wanna do a bare steel, tied to the mail box to collect salt .......krown vs fluid film winter comparison video to see which holds up longer....I WOULD BE GLUED TO THE SCREEN.
Thanks Again Eric. Can't help i'm a rust junkie. Check that...rust proofing junkie.
(LADIES & GENTLEMAN .....I GIVE YOU ERIC-O A TRUE FRIEND TO THE NORTH)
