I've worked on my own cars for 25 yrs an I'm not a certified mechanic at all. But a decent shade tree mechanic. An I watch a lot of how to videos to help me out an keep up with things an ill say this guy here is the best at breaking the issues down so it's clear an easy to fix your own issues. Guess I'm saying this guy is really good at what he does. An I wanna say thank you for posting the videos there really great.
You work on shade trees? Yeah, this guy seems good!!!
Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. Duane
@@realfixesrealfast I'm getting a po442 and po455 no check engine light Dodge Grand Caravan
@@-g.k.4389 your PCM monitors the "evaporative emissions" and is seeing a pressure leak. That is all anyone can tell you without actually seeing the vehicle in person and doing some testing.

Great and clear, not judgmental nor emotional presentation. This guy is trustworthy and earns it with his explanation and demonstration.
this guy is a role model, "the best thing we can do is think it through" put a cape on this guy and send him through the streets educating children on the dangers of drugs and dropping out of school.
+Albatross Thank you for your kind words. I truly appreciate them
+Albatross I agree.. I'm 46 and I believe you're never too old to learn. I'd love to apprentice at their shop!!

Hear, hear!
This is the 1st time I have ever been able to watch a RUclips instructional video in its entirety without skipping ahead or counting the minutes/seconds until it is over. Very well done video. The explanation of how the evap system works was thorough and easy for a non-mechanic like myself to understand. After viewing Part 1, I was actually looking forward to Part 2! I can't wait to show this video to my mechanic. Bravo, Duane!
I have been a tech for 40 years. Great diagnostic procedure! Clear and simple. I wish more shops would think this way. It would make the business easier for all!
Perhaps the best, most professional, thorough, and focused auto diagnostic tutorial I have ever seen. Huge compliments!
Thanks John, Appreciate you taking the time to comment
Very few people can explain stuff without going off topic, myself included. Excellent videos.
Thanks for your comments
I've missed these videos. Glad to see you back with another informative fix.
Yahya
One of the best How To videos I've ever seen, regardless of topic! Step by step, professional, good speaker well prepared. Now I feel OK tackling my problem!
This is a great, methodological presentation with feasible DIY techniques. You might also mention the potential deleterious effects of today's pseudo-gasoline, as it had on my old 2000 Explorer system.
I had a large leak and checked all lines, replaced the front purge valve, cleaned and reinstalled the canister vent valve - to no avail. Having wanted to avoid lowering the gas tank, I finally checked the tank vent valve and its lower portion/check ball frame had been decimated by the gasoline. Replacing it fixed the problem....
...for 6 months, at which point the ECL lit up with a code pointing at the canister vent valve. So I removed it and carefully disassembled it down to the valving components, cleaned them thoroughly and reassembled it. All has been fine for a year. ALSO: it would help viewers to find a link to Part 2 in the Description.
Thanks for posting the videos.
Fantastic educational video and Duane is an outstanding teacher. This man needs to be Wash, DC!! My gawd, the 200+ down votes here have to be NON-thinkers!! GiddyUp!!!
I enjoy watching your videos. Very simple to understand. Keep up the great work!
This is such great content! Thank you for posting - this has answered my questions on what and why and how I'm trying to repair my car. I've always gone by the premise of "be smarter than a piece of metal" to repair everything. I like your "critical thinking" approach to diagnosis. I don't subscribe often, but I will here and I'll plan on catching up on your content.
Thanks for making your videos so easy to follow and understand. Great job!
I'm an aircraft mechanic who like to do my own work when I have car problems. You video is the best I've seen with a detail breakdown of the problem. Thanks for posting. Excellent job.
This was an extremely helpful 2 part video series. Informative. I appreciate the knowledge breakdown.
Your videos are some of the best I've seen on RUclips. Your instructions are very detailed, methodical, and easy to comprehend. Looking forward to learning more from your other videos. Thank you.
One thing not covered: If it's the Canister Vent Valve rather than the Purge Valve. You'll need to locate the vent valve, which is usually on or near the charcoal canister that is attached (or very close to) your vehicle's gas tank. Disconnect the wire connector and hoses, and try the suck/blow test as he did here, or use a vacuum gauge.
I really enjoyed watching your two part video. They are informative and helpful. I always strive to find the underlying stuff in life; whether it involves my vehicles or not. Thanks for the excellent productions!
Wow, great video. I wish your shop was in my town, you would have my entire family and friends business. Thank you!!
DUANE, it is always to see you back your knowledge and expertise really helps a lot good videos and info as always.
your vids are always very good, thanks for your efforts...
You answered my question, I just missed it first time around watching your video. Great job!
Great job at explaining logically and systematically. Thank you.
This is one of the best educational videos I have ever seen, anywhere. You have a real knack for it.
Amazing video. It’s so good to see a real mechanics mind at work and not just a parts changer.
One of the best instructor to date.
FANTASTIC advice and video!!! You have me as a new subscriber! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and approach.
These 2 videos are incredible.
I have been trying to find background on a EVAP system and your method is the hands down winner.
I have subscribed and will begin to view your catalog.
Thank you and stay safe during these trying times.
Brilliant! I always think the best explanations are those that appear the most simple.
You're a great teacher. Very informative. Straight to the point. No bullshit. Thank you sir!
I am always looking for the quickest video, but this is awesome and I have learned a lesson in patience:)
Great video, help me understand the EVAP system and led me in the right direction for my own vehicle evap repair. Thank you!!
Great job explaining how to approach the problem analytically.
Thanks
Great video on using logic to diagnose the issue and explaining the system, thanks for sharing!
Wow, that just gained me a lot of knowledge on these complicated EVAP leaks!!!! TY so much!!!
The fact that he put that in his mouth and manipulated the actuators through it, I am impressed, and that’s old school. Very awesome. Subscribed today.
I appreciate those technics a lot! It saves the consumer money! It sure beats having a mechanic replacing parts left and right and adding to the bill!
Very good explanation. Especially like your diagrams. I am going to go look at some of the others. Thank you. I think you along with ChrisFix, EricTheCarGuy and ScottyKilmer have got me hooked on working on vehicles. Especially my Ranger which throws more codes than Bob Gibson threw baseballs.
Thanks again.
Awesome video, and you make everything so easy to understand and follow! You are my go to guy from now on! Thank you so very much! My prayers have finally been answered! Wow I am so excited! 😊
Duane,
As usual, a first class video. Your logic and common sense are unmatched. I have seen all of your videos and have to say that you are the class of the RUclips auto techs. ScannerDanner, SMA, motoYam82 and Schrodingers Cat are sneaking up on you, but you still have them by a whisker. Thanks again for your exceptionally educational channel.
I became a subscriber during the years that I didn't see any videos from you. I learned a lot from Suzuki Vitara series and the clarity I feel with this EVAP system thanks to this video series has really made things clearler for me.
The most important clue I was missing was that the system would be closed and use the vacuum of the engine to test if it really was a closed system.
Wow I've been chasing this vac leak in my system for a while and you made the diagnosis look so simple and very clear. The one thing I haven't looked at was that purge solenoid.
What a great video. This guy deserves every penny and more he is earning! Thanks for the help!
I wished you were my instructor when I was in school. Thanks for the video Sir.
Very happy with the way you provide information. I now understand the problem with my car and am capable of critical thinking to troubleshoot. Thanks for what you do!
Excellent Video!!! Very Well Explained !! He should be given a medal!! Such an amazing teacher!!
All too often we tend to guess and replace parts without knowing the root cause. I have actually had many mechanics operate like this. It's not their money, so why not? This is a valuable lesson in not only determining root cause (he actually checked and determined that the part was bad without guessing) but also to know how to verify the fix. This is what separates a mechanic from a guesser. Nice job!
Thanks Greg, I appreciate your recognizing that important difference. Duane
Excellent and clear! Thank you for the great explanations and graphics!
Excellent, easy to understand presentation. Thank you for posting it!!
WOW, This was the best video and super easy to watch. I moved quickly with detailed explanation! Thanks
Nicely done and explained. I have the same trouble on my 2003 Jaguar Vanden Plas, and follow this for the more simple way of testing. Sure glad I came across this since it has been since 1974 before joining the service that I have worked on cars. will definitely be a subscriber
I can't thank you enough for these two videos. I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla with the PO440 and PO446 Codes, thanks to you I have a next step to take.
Super video. Thanks. After watching this I checked the purge valve I installed 3 weeks ago and could blow right through it. You saved me from going insane over my leak.
Thank you for your video it helps a lot. Very nicely explained and simple.
Your videos are for sure THE BEST.
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST informative video for these types of things I have ever run across! I’m “old school” with rebuilding old carbureted, simpler racing engines. This new stuff with all the sensors is a learning experience for me. I love the “CRITICAL THINKING” emphasis on this approach! I am a retired engineer from the aerospace industry and love to see others doing the mind-work instead of replace it and the next thing and the next until it works. Charge the customer for all of the Parts he replaced and go wash his hands. Love this guy! I SUBSCRIBED!!!
Thanks, I appreciate your comments
superb, highly professional analysis and problem solutions! Excellent video
Thank you I have learn Part 1 and part 2 from you, like your professional work Sr. Thanks
Like a good story teller, and if you pay attention, there is a lesson to be learned. Great job, all other videos do not really explain what's happening but you did patiently. I am going to tackle this now on my RX. I noticed a drop in mileage of about 1/2 mpg when my P0441 started.
thanks for all the tips and peace of mind.was thinking the worst on my 2013 mustang and had the same problem my purge valve had a leak . great video!
I just had a P0456 indicator code. This is a great learning production. Some "trouble shooting common sense", a lot of wisdom, experience, patience, and methodology. Well done. Thank you.
great video very informative always wondered how evap worked... and you last bit about letting the computer decide and turn off the c.e.l was great
Have always enjoyed your videos. Not only r u a really smart guy, u r nimble as all get out!! The way u removed the dash in a few of your videos proved u r the real deal. Putting the young bucks to shame. Great to have u back. I am sure all 73,757 us agree on that!!
Duane be nimble, Duane be quick, he sure knows how to solve a problem in a lick.
Get off his nuts , im sure he has a wife already.
Make that 73,758. My first time seeing one of his vids - Having a small leak problem on my Hyundai - and he may have just saved me a mint! Very well done.
This saved me so much time. That diagram alone in the first video layer everything out into perspective. Thank you for the effort you put into your work.
Ummmm!!!!
Thank you. I will now reward your efforts with a single thumbs up.
Excellent analysis. Thanks for sharing!
Just found this channel. This is best evap leak video out there IMHO. And I've watched a lot of them. Thanks for this.
Thank you, I try and make things easy to understand
Agree with other post. By far the most simplest breakdown. Great video
Top-notch pro. Thank you for sending me (a 36 year Shade-Tree) in the right direction. 2000 Camry 4cyl, PO440 & PO442 small leak.
Very imformative! Thanks allot for the video! I was completely lost trying to fix this problem on my truck till now.
Had a P0456 code on my 2015 Grand Caravan, and with this gentleman’s help I was able to diagnose that it was not the valve pump, but the ESIM by the gas tank. Saved me a trip to the dealership!! Thank you!!!
Great video especially for the amateur or experienced. Like how you incorporated the Verus/Modus to show how the various menus can identify type of leak and readiness checks. Great work sire
#1on my list to trust, I've been plagued with the same problem with our 2014 GC SUMMIT for months, ant our tank has a ventless cap system. Thanks so much for your help!!🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Thanks a lot. You video is very informative and clearly explanatory.
Super good job.
I appreciate your informative and very well done video. You are providing a great service for the public to increase our understanding of some of these mysterious, government mandated, troublesome and expensive systems for the do it yourselfer. thanks
This man is absolutely freakin awesome at explaining things.
Yes he is! I'm a novice. He explained this from the very beginning to the end! I've watched several videos trying g to understand the concept some were helpful but didn't go into detail like him! The video showed you the parts, how to test and explained what to do! I feel like I can take this task on and fix my own car now. But now I need a diagnostic computer to use my critical thinking! Thanks!
Excellent Video and helped me understand the EVAP System to try to troubleshoot my 442 code on my 2002 Thunderbird.
Great clear explanation. Thank you SO much!
Amazing video my friend. Thank you. I learned alot about my car and the evap system haha
Thank you sir for great explanation of how the entire system works. Hopefully I’ll find my leak soon. Cheers.
I have small leak too on my 2005 Pontiac Montana. Great video now I know what to look for.
Just saw this, Great diagnosis, You sir are a credit to all of us, Not just a parts changer...That's how I work also!!
Outstanding. Love the emphasis of "no need to shotgun the problem with parts or invest in expensive equipment, instead think!" I'm tshooting a P0442 problem and information in this video has been very helpful.
AWESOME information here!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!!!
Clear and precise detail. Thanks! I will try that to my Van. Failed from Smog with Small EVAP leak. Let you know once I passed!!!
excellent video. I knew a lot about this system already, but this video really broke it down in easy to understand terms. Thank you.
I'm 50 years old,and I watched your video like a kid in the school.
Great video thank you for the educational video
Great job Marco, great explaining!
Thanks for the video! Adding this to my current vacuum/CEL/misfire/02 sensor saga!
God bless you, buddy.. keep up the good work.
Watched a lot of how to videos. Best one I've ever seen! Thank you!
thanks, it's comments like your that keep me doing this. Duane
very well explained. I'm sure your knowledge inspires confidence in your customers.
this video is done very well by this man. i searched and searched on how to find a evap leak and how to fix it. most of the videos i saw were of people just talking about how to do it and thats it. this guys in this video actually goes into detail!! he also made me understand the picture in the first video that shows you the parts of the evap system, where to find them and know what they do. so yeah people this guys is good ha
Excellent two part presentation on finding a small EVAP leak, Thank you, very much appreciated!
I appreciate your thorough explanation of the system. As a DIYer I really can use your explanation so that I understand what I am doing and the right way to trouble shoot the system. Thanks.
Very good explanation. I always want to know what's going on and how things works and not just blindly follow some steps, this is exactly what I like. Thanks
So detailed and well explained! Thank you so much!.
Thanks for the education. I now know what the codes are all about which makes diagnosis a lot easier.
Thanks for explaining this. I am always looking for a logical mechanic.
Very informative and helpful! Ive got an 04 f150 with the dreaded 5.4 3v that has tons of issues. One appears to be possibly vacuum related. Other day I noticed my fuel tank was under full vacuum (cap are hard to remove!) when was working on it so I believe the leak is pretty substantial.
