Quick Easy Test For Stuck Open Evap Purge Valve
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- In this video I show a quick and easy way to test to see if an evaporative emissions purge valve is stuck open due to an internal mechanical fault. (The evaporative emissions purge valve is also known as a vapor management valve.)
Step 1: Disconnect the vapor tube going to the valve at the valve. The particular tube that is needed to be disconnected will be the one coming from the evap canister to the purge valve. Typically the evap canister is located near the fuel cell. So this tube will typically run to the rear of the vehicle.
Step 2: Start the engine and allow it to idle. This is important so that vacuum can be applied to the valve. !!! WARNING: BE SURE THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON. KEEP THE VEHICLE IN PARK WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED!!!
Step 3: Disconnect the valve's electrical connector. It is important to do this because the PCM may cause the valve to come on allowing vacuum to pass 0through the valve giving inaccurate test results. It is normal to have the PCM command the valve on. Also, if there is an electrical fault it could cause the valve to stay on allowing vacuum to pass through the valve causing inaccurate test results. A mechanically sound valve should not allow vacuum to pass through it when the valve is not commanded on by the PCM. Disconnecting the valve electrically helps with getting accurate test results by isolating the valve.
Step 4: Place a wet finger over the opening of evap purge valve nipple. No vacuum should be felt. If so, then the valve is stuck open and is faulty. (Do note: in the case of a very small leak, special leak detection equipment may be needed. It's been my experience however, that 99% of the time if the valve is stuck open a leak can be detected in the manner shown in the video.)
Definition of "Normally closed solenoid/valve": A solenoid that is closed when no electrical current is supplied to the valve.
Caution: Keep all ignition sources away from work area. Fuel vapor may be present in tube and valve. Fuel is very flammable. Even with all sources of ignition removed from the area fuel vapor can still ignite via other means. Use extreme caution. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Work in a well ventilated area. Do test at your own risk!
Caution: Use extreme caution when performing this test. Beware of moving parts that could potentially injure you. Keep your members clear of moving parts. Keep loose garments and jewelry away from moving parts.
Caution: Be sure the vehicle is in park and that the parking brake is applied before performing this test!!

After watching subpar videos it was a relief to find yours. I do not know how you find the time to answer so many peoples questions listed below. But because of your good faith and help I have subscribed and will watch more videos. Thank you.
That's great. Thank you for subscribing! I appreciate it.
2013 Toyota Tundra. Did this test and it worked! Simple fix as well. Thank you very much my friend.
Thanks for the video. I did this test today and don't have a stuck solenoid. Now, on to the next possible issue.
Thank you! I really appreciate the help. Your diagnosis worked and was very simple. I had a brand new purge valve installed that I suspected was faulty. I replaced it with another purge valve and it corrected the problem. Was getting a p0456 code and the smell of fuel vapor that I couldn't locate.
Super cool!
Much appreciate the help brother! After watching I troubleshooted the problem and replaced the valve
Good job!
Great video! right to the point, with good camera work! 10/10!
Much appreciated!
I always enjoy watching your videos I have done a Ford Edge water pump after watching you do one
That's awesome. Great job!
This is an easy, straightforward way to do a quick test. And a ding of a lot less than a Ford dealer will "hose" (pun intended) me for. If it IS stuck open, is there a danger in essential driving until the new one arrives? (2 days) I heard somewhere that it could fill the canister with gas. And that begs the question, if I don't want vacuum to the canister, can I drive with the hose plugged until the new valve comes? Thanx much for this. Hopefully it saves a trip to a high priced shop.
Excellent vid boss! Short and straight to the point❤
Excellent video you speak very clear and precise and you know as well as I do how important that is. Great job
I test mine same way, disconnect the hose of the gas tank and place a finger in the valve, if you feel vacuum is a fault valve, the valve make a rough idle, shut off when running, hard to start. THANKS
Everytime i fill my gas up and leave the gas station my rpms fludder down if i come to a redlight. It goes away after a few miles though. No check engine light on. Could this be the purge valve? And do i need to change valve and canister?
My canister purge valve seems to be stuck partially open when unplugged as well, plus the engine idle would bog down some every 10-15 seconds. It eventually caused my fuel tank to implode/shrink while going down the road.
Thanks for the video.. I didn't even think about removing the connector and checking the valve.. sure enough, constant very powerful suction..
great information - Thank You very much indeed.
it causes code P2198 in my ford edge. I did this test, and YES!! there is a vaccum with the eletric cable disconnected. the valve is stuck open! thanks, I will buy a new one
Thanks for sharing
So simple...
Sharing your knowledge with us is really, really nice and I thank you Sir.
Your welcome.
Appreciate the video buddy. I have the old style OBD1 with the vacuum operated purge.. was tryin to figure out if it was normally closed / normally open. I guess the design theory is when you apply throttle and the manifold vacuum drops, the purge valve opens.. anyways thanks a lot
Wish I would have seen this a year ago. Thanks so much for sharing
Thank you for the info sir I was able to diagnose my girlfriends car ,you were a big help
Very Helpful - Thanks Bro !!!
Glad it helped
Great video! Thanks!
Good diagnostic tip right to the point. Thanks
good thing , aside from testing the wiring for current flow or voltage,
another way to quickly find if it is a stuck open purge valve,
Ow yeah , just don't forget to reset or clear that code if so ever it throws any.
Thanks man for this, gonna see more of your videos sooner, peace!
Thank you Barbours Auto
You're welcome!
How about testing the valve by putting voltage to the valve? Listen for the click
Great tip as always!
Happy to help!
Thanks, helping the simple made clear
Glad it helped!
2007 Toyota Sequoia check engine light lit up and the other lights as well. Gas cap has been changed, gas cap always is tightened correctly. Now I am told that the Purge Valve is making the check engine light up, nothing to do with the gas cap. The Purge Valve will cost $350-$500 to replace next time the check engine lights up. ~ Fort Smith Arkansas
Very good explanation!
Appreciate it, Kevin! Thank you.
Do you need to reset the fuel trims in the ecu after replacing the faulty valve?
The great video. Thanks alot and Best regard
Excelente video me sirvió de mucho ya había checado todas las conexiones y no daba con la falla asta que realice la prueba que dijo y listo solucionado lo hice en una gmc canyon 2009
Awesome job mate
Thanks for the video
You bet
I have a 2005 ford ranger my purge valve has a 3rd port that's capped off with a green threaded cap it's on the opposite side of the other 2 ports , I want to say it's a service port? Would that port be where I would test the valve for having vacuum or no vacuum.
No videos on crown Victoria evap vent canister please doone
Good day
My 2009 Ford Expedition with a 5.4 L engine is misfiring rough idle put a scan tool to it gave me a code P0453.
Changed the sensor on top of the fuel tank no leaks in the EVap system. Still doing the same
I have a 2009 Buick Lucerne they got a code for the EVAP vent solenoid I changed it out and the light still stayed on
I have a question. Can it stop a vehicle from starting? Or have u heard of that before. I have one that finally failed....and my vehicle won’t start. Changed everything, plugs, fuses and sensors then I remember I never got to changing my purge valve that was bad several yrs ago.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
So if it's not pulling a vacuum after it warms up, does that mean it's stuck closed?
Thank you for this video. Is Evap Purge Valve the same as Canister Purge Valve/Solenoid?
Yes, it is
Thanks @@BarboursAutoHelp
My 4.9 bronco runs like crap and wants to die unless I bypass the solenoid and run tube open straight from charcoal canister to intake.
This might be the issue I’ve been hunting on my civic for 3 months🤞🏻
Great tip! Thank you
Is it possible to have a faulty purge valve and the truck not throwing any codes?
2018 ford f150 xlt 5.0
Truck doesn’t turn over after stopping to get gas after long (cross country) drives. (Only starts if truck is left to sit for 20-30 minutes)
Good starter, good alternator, good battery, no leaky injectors, fuel pump fuse is good.
So when you say that the vehicle doesn't turn over, to me that means that it's not cranking. Is this what you are saying? The engine is not cranking? That would be what we call a "no crank/ no start" scenario. Now if the vehicle cranks but doesn't start then that is a "crank/ no start" scenario. A stuck open purge valve will not cause a "no crank/ no start" scenario but could possibly cause a "crank/ no start" scenario. But, it's hard to believe that the purge valve could be causing this and not setting a check engine light to come on. That would be one heck of a leak to cause that symptom.
Anyone know if it's possible for the purge valve to be noisy, yet still operate normally? The car runs perfectly fine and there are no codes, but the purge solenoid makes a lot of noise and I haven't seen this issue before
Damn such amazing videos I got to do this on Spanish! 😃

Can you clean it instead of buying new one?
Hello, Do you know why my engine is not sucking in air? It turns on and runs just fine. I am not getting no air sucked in even when I removed the purge valve. I tested the purge valve by applying voltage and it opens and closes. Thats when I realized that engine is not sucking in air regardless.
What vehicle are you working on and are you sure you checked the right part?
Would a Evap purge canister cause the smell of gas ?
Yup!
Hello, can i just turn it off electricaly (plug out) for a test drive, i mean is it safe for car, will not cause some damage??
If a person is broke is there any way to fix the purge valve at all? Anyone tried it or done it?
that's a good video ty.can the purge valve get stuck in the closed position?
Absolutely
I followed the steps and there was no suction, i plugged the electrical back in while engine was running, and it began sucking air, not sure if that was the right way, but either way i suppose i need to replace it now
It will suck when it is connected if the PCM commands it to come on. That's why you test for suction with it disconnected. It should have no suction with the electrical connector disconnected.
Question I cleaned mine out the car is running way faster is that what it do?
Thank you for video
I just did the procedure in an 08 explorer 4.6 v8 and it sucked my finger a bit. Not sure if I'm this vehicles the valve should be normally closed or open
So you don't even have to turn the engine on? It will just permanently have a vacuum if it's broken??
There is text over the video at the time stating that the engine has to be running when checking for vacuum.
So while its running pull the electrical connector off and the vacuum line testing if it's got pressure which is bad
Where is the purge valve located on a Ford mustang 1997
Great explanation, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you I have a 07 galant and getting p0441 code it wasn’t the gas tank cap tho
WOW VERY WELL EXPLAIN THANK U FOR DAT U DA BEST.

My pleasure
i keep getting P0456 on mitsubishi 02 galant went away and back after 3 new gas cap and the oem model but still pops up any suggestions?
Will a bad purge valve get a 02 sensor code as well ?
would a stuck open purge valve cause an o2 sensor rich to lean code come up
It sure could..
My LTFT is 3.9% STFT is -0 to -12 appox. and runs perfect. When it runs bad the stft is postive 5-12. (Runs like is is starving for fuel) 2003 slk 230 mostly runs bad. Fuel pressure pressure is 55psi and stays that way even under load. This is the Mercedes code when I get one pictured. It might be a purge valve now it is running perfect. Checked fuel Pressure 55psi all the time. Cleaned some grounds cleaned Throttle body. Checked the 2 valves that are only 2 wire they are clicking. Swaped oem MAF sensor with oem Maf sensor no change. Smoke test done. Can a purge valve cause this. When it runs bad this is the code p2024-1 B28 Mercedes code.
Not a Mercedes expert but I wouldn't think a stuck open purge valve would cause the fuel trims to go positive like that.
Thank you
Thank you very much*********
Mine was sending lean codes to both banks. I tried this method and felt nothing. I put a vacuum gauge on it and the needle was moving. It was undetectable with my finger. I replaced the purge valve and the problem went away.
It's highly unlikely that a purge valve that is stuck open will cause a lean code. Think about it... What is it sucking on?... Gas vapor. More gas vapor = richer. What kind of vehicle do you have?
I've changed this purge valve 3 times already now I have to change it again,,what's really going on...2007 Yukon denali
Why do you keep replacing it?
@@BarboursAutoHelp check engine light comes on, I take it to Auto Zone. Get it checked and it's the Purge valve again
@@bizkit2147 What code exactly are you getting? What tests have you done?
You didn't mention - I'm guessing the engine must be running? Sorry, I've not worked on a car in about 40 years.

What causes purge valve solenoid to have gasoline inside on a 2006 f150 4.6L please help
Solenoid Purge Valve stuck close how i check it pelase
what do ytou mean!!???????????????????? do you try to start car when feeling for sucktion??
Either start the vehicle and then go and feel for suction or have someone start it for you when feeling for suction. Easy peasy. *Be sure the vehicle is in park and that the parking brake is applied. Keep the vehicle in park with the parking brake applied while checking valve.*
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
my wifes 08 G35 had a P0455 code. i reset code and hasn't come back on yet. can this effect her gas mileage. car used to get 20 mpg, now its gettin 16 over a period of last two years. i am going to replace valve i bought already but hasn't done it yet. p.s all normal maintenance been done including plugs at 96k car has 102k on it. any suggestions?
It's hard to say. There are a lot of factors that can affect fuel economy. I suppose it may be possible but I'm not really sure if that is causing an issue like that.
Can it alsow make the engine shake ? I got misfire codes.
Yes, a stuck open valve could cause misfire codes.
I have a 2004 f150 XL heritage my question is, can you blow in through the canister purge side when it’s disconnected because I know it’s supposed to be open when it’s connected when I put a vacuum to the intake, engine side on the purge solenoid it holes vacuum, but when I blow in through the other side from the canister purge site when it’s disconnected air goes through and comes out the intake engine side of the purge solenoid ?
Nice video
Thanks
Thanks bro.

I’m working on a mystery and collecting clues. I have a 1996 Nissan Quest, 140k miles, strong smell of gas in the cabin. I also have a terrible low speed hesitation, it bogs down and noses over when accelerating from a stop. I recently replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. It got a little better but it’s still pretty bad especially with the a/c on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Gas cap?
2001 Audi TT code P0422. Could this be my issue?
I just tried it I can't feel any air going in or coming out
My purge valve stops working like every few months or so. Why?
It probably has to do with the color of the car. Red and black cars usually have this problem....lol Heck I don't know. What kind of car is it and how exactly is the valve not working? Why do you think the valve is bad?
@@BarboursAutoHelp It's a 97 Ram 1500. I keep getting the error code that tells me it's bad and when i remove my gas cap, I no longer hear that vacuum sound I normally hear.
@@ZteveW What code exactly are you getting?
@@BarboursAutoHelp P0443
@@ZteveW Ok, so P0443 sets when the PCM detects a faulty with the valve or the circuit. Now the circuit goes through the valve and into the PCM. Now if I'm not mistaken the possible points of failure are, the valve, the circuit, connectors in the circuit or a PCM. So, you'll need to do further testing to determine what exactly is the problem.
I did this test and it my purge valve was sucking in air when I put my finger on it, I changed it and it still continues to suck air. Is there something else that would cause this?
Did you disconnect the electrical connector before checking it?
I have a 98 dodge dakota the pcv valve ticks and was bought new why is that?
Maybe a bad part... not sure. When does it click and under what conditions?
So what if it is stuck closed?
That's a good question and sounds like a topic for another video. Why, do you suspect yours is stuck closed?
@@BarboursAutoHelp sluggish at a cold idle. RPM needle is moving slightly between 650 and 675.

I have a 2014 escape eco boost and I’m smelling evaporated gas through the vents . Could that be the same thing ?
My engine light on because of canister purge valve
Is this part the same as a egr vacuum solenoid?
It may work similarly but the egr vacuum solenoid and the evap purge valve are not the same part.
i think you meant to tell people to try to start while feeling holes for suction
Obviously, you cant be in both places at once. Start the vehicle and then walk over to the valve and feel for suction. Easy peasy.. *Be sure the vehicle is in park and that the parking brake is applied. Keep the vehicle in park and keep the parking brake applied while checking valve.*
