If anyone is having trouble pumping gas in this model car, you definitely want to check the filter tube vent. This is located driver's side rear wheel well. You will have to remove the wheel to get access to the plastic shroud in the wheel well. The filter tube vent is located behind there. You'd be surprised how much road debris actually gets trapped up in there despite it being covered. When I cleaned mine, I removed a dustpan sized pile of dirt and sand. In my case, cleaning that filler vent did the trick allowing me to pump gas, and not have to do the "flip the gas nozzle upsidedown" trick in order to pump gas. 3 years since and still pumping gas fine. Just a quick tip no one really talks about. 😉

Search RUclips with the year make and model of your car, and evap canister vent valve/solenoid.
On a 2001-2006 Hyundai Elantra that valve/solenoid is located in the charcoal canister housing located left rear...under the bumper and behind the left rear wheel. Open the housing, disconnect the hoses, and check for charcoal or any other blockages in the valve and in the hoses connected to it.
Might possibly be your valve is stuck closed and unable to open and close as needed. If that's the case, a replacement would be needed and is fairly simple and inexpensive.
Sorry, if that's not the info you're seeking. Good starting point at least.
      Good luck.

Unhooked everything and dropped the Evap canister blew air into it to see if it was clogged. Seemed fine. Traced the hoses back only to find dirt packed completely in the outside vent. Tanks also have pressure sensors that the PCM uses to determine how much vaccum pressure the tank needs, in order to know what signals to send to the purge valve and the vent solenoid. The gas caps is also vented to let in fresh air to the tank upon vaccum pull from the PCM. Caps determine open or closed based on vaccum and gas pressures and vary based on tank pressures.

@@cloutkingupnext4721 possibly. If the bias voltage isn't at the expected level it could indicate a problem with the solenoid, but it could (also) mean there is a problem with the wiring. e.g. a damaged/corroded wire. Don't fall into the trap of automatically assuming the device on the circuit is the problem.

Yep that was the best explanation of the evap system I have seen. Only problem I see is the drawing specifically the hoses going in/out of the canister(the vapors would not be cleaned).
The vent hose should either go from one end to the other (from top almost all the way to bottom)or have a physical barrier going almost all the way to the other end of canister(from the top almost all the way to bottom) separating it from the other two hoses forcing the vapors to go thru the charcoal and then thru vent)
The hoses for the purge and tank should be going just to the top into the canister (same chamber/not going thru the charcoal).
The way you drew it - all hoses are in the same chamber and nothing would be cleaned.

    Great video.
I just did a smoke test on a 2014 elantra and I commanded the vent valve closed, but smoke was pouring out of the fuel door. Customer had already replaced the gas cap and the gasket between the filler neck was shifted all the way to the front of the car and off center. I assumed that was it and ordered the gasket, but now I found out that the vent valve recirculates back into the filler neck instead of outside the car! I am going to pick one up and test it is sealed when closed and replace the gasket on the filler neck and realign it. Such an unexpected system made the test inconclusive.

That's a really good explanation, Thanks, I think you could add that on start up the computer puts ground to the vent solenoid and closes it so a leak test is done on the fuel system. Vacuum is pulled by the engine and if the tank has a leak (loose cap, cracked hose or leaky or non closing vent solenoid) a code is set and check engine light comes on. I have been working with my 1998 Astro Van AWD 4.3L LT. Man! I have been trying very hard to comprehend how this evap system works, so that I may narrow down the reasons for PO Code 122, 452. I was looking at my Solenoid underneath near the Charcoal cannister. I tested for power as you demonstrated. That showed power! However, as the solenoid is original equipment, I wondered about it. I could not hear any clicking, and I disconnected the power from it, and the car ran the same, then it would die after a few minutes. Reconnected the solenoid, and the same problem, the car would idle fine, then in a few minutes it would die. I follow your testing advice by removing the solenoid and test for the sound of clicking using an external source for power. Your video is the one and only video I have found that actually describes in detail what's going on with the pressure system. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I am subscribing! You have answered some important questions I have had. Hope to learn more. EXCELLENT JOB! WELL DONE!!!

Are gas vapors so prolific that they needed to create this horrific overly complicated EVAP system? I understand one-way valve letting air in for gas burnt so it doesn't create a vacuum. I don't understand the reason for a purge out of air, which looks to be where the complexity comes in, in system design, maintenance and repair.

I like the video. The reason why you have voltage on both side of the vent solenoid is because the PCM hasn't put the ground out for testing. Therefore, there will be voltage on both side of the coil and the solenoid is open. When the PCM puts out the ground for testing, the solenoid will then close.

Thanks for the video. Mine is a 2007 Sub with only 74 miles. Check engine light turned on with OBD code P0446 (Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit 1/1. I've replaced the gas cap, vapor vent canister valve, vapor jumper wire and the Emissions Vapor Canister Purge Valve Solenoid EVAP Vent ( I don't think it's necessary but I did it anyway). Cleared it and the check engine light is gone but after driving 93 miles, the I/M is still not ready with a combo drive of city and fwy. Drove it for another mile and after 6 cycles, when I ran the OBD at 94 miles to see if it's I/M ready, unfortunately I see the same "pending" P0446 code despite driving it up to 110 miles hoping it will clear on it's own. So I decided to erase the pending code/OBD and did the same thing again. Drove it up to 92 miles without check engine, still not I/M ready and at 94 miles later it's still not ready and the "pending" p0446 code is back. Replaced the vapor vent canister valve, vapor jumper wire again just in case I have a bad part, but unfortunately pending P0446 code is back. I'm hesitating on replacing the vapor vent/big box like cause I don't have issue filling up gas and no gas odor around the area too. Could it be the fuel tank pressure solenoid? I hope not... cause I know this is pretty common on the 2006 but not on the 2007. I'd appreciate yours or anyone's.

I've watched several videos on this subject - got the dreaded check engine light, cleared it and it came right back. Your video explained the subject very well. Thank you. Now could you come on over and test mine for me? Ha! Thanks for being clear and providing a easy to understand illustration. Peace!

1 more reason the you’d get a P0994: I found I had a leak at the tank where the hose connects to the charcoal canister. So basically, the PCM thought the vent solenoid wasn’t closing, when it was actually a huge air leak that made it seem that way. Thanks for the explanation and the code list in the description. Between you and BriansMobile1, I know everything about my evap system!

@@G3855-o5f Purge solenoid is bad. Or there's a leak between the solenoid and the intake manifold.

Very nice and informative description of evap system. I have a 2002 Mercedes Benz CLK55 and got a check engine light for codes P0170/P0173 Fuel trim Bank 1 & 2. I was going nuts looking for a vacuum leak. The only thing I have not checked is the evap system and those valves. I hope my vent valve is stuck open and causing my fuel trim issue. I bet it is. Oh just one thing more. I have a 2001 E55 that sat for 5 years and gas went bad. Drained bad gas, R&R fuel pump and filter, but now the gas tank is pressurizing which makes it "Hard Start" condition. I suspect also a vent solenoid but stuck closed. Thanks for the valuable comprehensive information!
