Watched this video this morning, bought parts this afternoon, and tested for a leak about ten mins ago. Found a small leak in the vapor hose running from my tank to my cannister. Thanks for the quick and dirty smoke machine tutorial. Tested and approved!
You can use a bicycle tire pump vs the compressor. That can keep costs low if you don’t have a compressor. Just a slight change to the air-intake nipple.
EXCELLENT video! I'm already a huge believer in using smoke machine to get car running right by detecting leaks you didn't know were there - really helps you quickly ID trouble spots. First used on when I had a surging idle, that would also trigger a Check Engine code, that I cldn't figure out for the life of me after checking all the components - including the one id'd by the code. Applied a smoke machine on the air intake and, voila, a cpl of leaks I had no idea were there! Sealed those off and idle was perrrfectly smooth and CEL stayed off I previously made a smoker using a cheap soldering iron and a sock soaked w/ mineral oil in a jar. It worked OK for a while but the cheap soldering iron shorted out a cpl of times from continuous operation - really a PITA hvg to swap it out after epoxying it to the lid. And even when working it didn't produce as much smoke as I wld like. I LOVE this idea - no components to fail, cheap reusable source of ample smoke, nice idea on screwing quick connect fittings on the lid for max ease of use. A+! Two thumbs up!
Great video. If you don't have a compressor, you can use a portable battery-operated fish air pump. The pressure is just about right and no need to adjust.
Literally a life saver I didn’t have $800 to spend on a machine and this did the trick, everything skyrocketed in price so paid $34 for everything but still no complaints
*How come no one uses a tire inflator as a compressor? They come with regulators and digital psi settings these days, and they only about $40 on average*
Great idea using the incense. I usually use burlap and fire but it’s difficult to maintain consistent smoke. I’ll have to buy some of those sticks. Great idea
I got lucky last year, got an air compressor just like that one for free, curb shopping. A local contractor has a sign next to his "Free Pile" on my way home from work. Just had to replace quick connect air fittings and clean gunk out of the regulator, works great now! Building a similar smoke machine tomorrow :)
Great idea using cheap incense for this. I'd rather my work area and engine bay to smell like cheap incense during testing any day instead of old burnt sock soaked in mineral oil. Definitely looks like you get more smoke from the incense as well.
Some evap hoses go to the fuel tank or fuel filler pipe. Is it possible that any glowing embers from the incense can make their way through the smoke in the hoses and cause an explosion?
Excellent and inexpensive version. Although I have compressors, I may play around with bicycle pump and a hand bulb pump for an outboard fuel tank or blood pressure cuff, just to see if those are workable alternatives to a compressor. Really good production values. 👍
Is the insense smoke save for the hoses and components in the system? Trying to decide if I should go with this build or the version powered by car battery with mineral oil.
Odd that something like this was going through my head today and I found this video. Good to know about using very low pressure. Saw one video that says s to open throttle to allow smoke to go through everything. It was the only video I have seen that mentions opening the throttle. Comments?
Thank You Been chasing some codes I had looked for an easy setup a while back but never got around to making one. Glad I procrastinated and revisited this topic all this stuff is laying around already if I could find it or be had for the cheap.
Just made mine, but wick keeps catching fire about 6 seconds after I connect it, any ideas why or what I did wrong, using 26 gauge nichrome wire and baby oil
I wish I found this one before, had issues with car not idling so changed pretty much everything, (no fault codes) eventually after removing inlet manifold for the 3rd time found a split hose that goes from inlet init computer. Weeks and many many hours of work. Thankfully I could do myself but this would have helped .
I for real made this today, I used a step bit, 2 air fittings, about 10ft of half inch hose, and I actually used an air blow gun with a zip tie secured on the trigger just barely enough to make enough pressure to have the smoke come out! Although I smelled like a goth girls bed after burning dragons blood incense… it worked and I found that a squirrel or something chewed some vent hoses under my car! 10/10
Thanks. I look forward to trying this. There's always a penalty to pay when you borrow your brother's truck. This one is throwing a P0455 so I'm gonna try to find it for him before I return it to him with no gas in it.
For those without a compressor, u can use a cheap tire pump or a fish tank air pump. Hell u can use urr lungs, or the old bellows bag. Anything to move air. Bicycle pump etc or the mother in law. Us fellas know how much hit air they have. Lmfao
And when your done smoking your car you can use it to smoke up yourself and your friends! Lol Seriously though thats excellent and I will be making one to test my EVAP leak on my gmc sierra. Im going to add a brass 1/4" ball valve onto the lid instead of just the air hose fitting. That way i can control the flow a bit easier.
Cool is, is cool does! Now go and get some wood burning chips and a dishwasher element and make a bigger deluxe model. The dishwasher element doesn't get red hot but works if you just wire it direct without a temp. ajust turn dial.
every video....fix this or that for under $1o bucks...." so firstly waht yer gonna need ....is a $1000 dollar piece of kit....then we can get started on our $10 DIY...what bollocks

Was that sarcasm? Just curious
You just saved me from spending a couple hundred bucks on a smoke tester. Thank you!!!!!
I just got smoke machine for $350 and was 💩, I just saw this video and make one like that OMG working great. Thank u so much , you are the best

@@TheComebackKid It sounds on a few words like you may be a Boston guy, which I would also have in common. Lots of smahht, inventive folks in Boston!

awesome, im gonna use this to find an evap leak thats been plaguing my moms car for a while now. thanks for putting this video out there!
Brilliant!!!
I just happened to have all the pieces needed for this.
And incense is way better then the soldering iron trick.
2 thumbs-up 👍👍
You can get away with a bycycle pump by one at the 99 cent store great video.
Hi Tony, thanks for watching!
Very sorry mole and very smart.
Thank you from a 40 year mechanic/tech
Awesome video! Clear, to the point, and actually works! Thank you for uploading this

Awesome, I've got lump charcoal and smoker chips I'll try it with.
This is the best smoke machine in town. Thumbs up mate!

Excellent video. quick down and dirty easy to build.
You nailed it , made it simple for us all , best one IV seen because price is right.thanks for showing.
YOU ARE A CERITFIED GENIUS! Thanks for sharing. I have an evap Leak and this will help me find it.
Thank you for the video this may help with a evap leak That’s probably been the issue with our car for years I will try this out much appreciated!!
Saved me hundreds. Thanks!
Great way ...Maybe a aquarium air pump...has not been mentioned unless i missed it in my quick read
Excellent...got all those items,
Great work bro !!!
Some evap hoses go to the fuel tank or fuel filler pipe. Is it possible that any glowing embers from the incense can make their way through the smoke in the hoses and cause an explosion?
Grate idea homemade cheap, pin point leaking 👍👍
I like it! Simple and effective!
Nicely done!
Excellent and inexpensive version. Although I have compressors, I may play around with bicycle pump and a hand bulb pump for an outboard fuel tank or blood pressure cuff, just to see if those are workable alternatives to a compressor.
Really good production values. 👍
Great idea! I'll use this for a plumbing leak test. Thanks😊
Genius !! 👍👍

Hi Mike, thanks for watching pal!
Thanks Sr, excellent Idea
Amazing idea 🤩
I just taped a bit of hose to the suck end of one of those vape things and blew in the base. Lots of smokey vapour
Love it!!!! Thanks for doing this!
Just made mine, but wick keeps catching fire about 6 seconds after I connect it, any ideas why or what I did wrong, using 26 gauge nichrome wire and baby oil
excellent idea many thanks my friend

An absolutely brilliant idea sir.
Thanku for posting, steve frim the uk.
Hi Steve. Been a bit since I’ve been to the UK, thanks for watching!

Great job
Great video sir thank you 👍
It's amazing idea thanks
Very appreciative for this upload!!
Simple and ingenious
great idea thanks !
Does smoke leave an oily residue?
I made one and Pump is not needed at all.
one six inch pipe last me 2 hrs.
Thanks. I look forward to trying this. There's always a penalty to pay when you borrow your brother's truck. This one is throwing a P0455 so I'm gonna try to find it for him before I return it to him with no gas in it.

You can use a tyre or bike pump.
Great idea! How about a smoke granade?
Calm down( FBI,ATF), the ones from the fireworks stand?
Incense?.....= Brilliant!
This is great!
Hi Zack, thanks for watching!
Que lastima que no vi tú video antes, me hubiera evitado un gasto económicos, que fácil es tu video para hacer este proyecto
You didn't show the best hose to hook it up to. A lot of us have no idea what hose!
Thanks Man
How much does the air pressure need to be at?
Not much, just enough to push the smoke out the other end
No more than 1 psi is recommended.
Excelente video saludos desde Costa Rica
🎉 about to do that thanks

Upgrade idea mineral oil and a heating element inside the can
Perfect
You could probably use a car tire inflator if you don't have a compressor.
Good ish bro.
Thanks for watching Steven!
Using incense is an inspired idea.

Holy shit THANKS!!!!!!🙏
To think I have all of those items sitting in my garage.😅
Great if you haven't got a compressor and it's cheaper to actually buy a smoke machine lol
Kind of look like chael sonnen, doesn’t help I’m sleepy
