"You guys know I wasn't vaping. I have a BMW, not a Subaru." Hahahaha, I am that Subaru owner.
Once you buy a WRX.. You are instantly "in" the club. Lol. It doesn't matter how old you are.. People always give you the "what's up" head nod. Lol
Me too bruh
Haha ded
I wasnt vaping, i was huntin vacuum leaks!
looking at his smoke machine tells me he was a subaru owner. lol
I can't believe this actually worked. I was sceptical in the beginning like "no way it works" lol. This is great, I'm gonna have to make this and try it myself on my daily driver
I have the check engine light on my car, thanks for the video saves a ton of time and locates it quickly.
I made one of these. With a couple of tweaks. I used a valve stem with the valve removed as the inlet side, used a barbed fitting with a nut on the bottom and used epoxy on the fitting and around the soldering iron. So pretty much the same idea but with the tire valve stem I can put a lock on chuck on.
Just tried this on my father's 307 hdi. Worked amazingly well. Found a leak from the air box behind the engine while outside on a windy day. Cheers dude this video just saved us loads of money and is definitely something I'll use again.
Awesome! Glad it worked for you.
Should I cap off the tail pipe? Wouldn’t this help contain the system? Just wondering
I will give this a try...i expect to have smoke coming out from everywhere because it's all sorts of messed up lol
Totally awesome solution. I'll be making one of these vacuum leak tester this week. Thanks again.
Great smoke tester!! I need to make me one. Thanks for sharing.
Dude I love your channel. No frills straight forward explanation. You have the right cuts and speed up the u necessary parts. I wish all RUclips channels were like yours.
This is the best vacuum leak tester DIY on youtube!
HEY...That was a GREAT build and on the cheap...I am going to try it. Thanks
So far one of the best You Tube video I've seen! I need a smoker to find an irritating vacuum leak in my truck. Great Job!
Well, did it find the leak?
Although many months after the video was published, still thank you a lot. You are a very smart person.
This is pretty genius. Might try it myself.
that subaru joke never gets old. love the videos!
I love people like u that make something outta nothin! Nice work G
Thank you for the smoke generator idea. It helped me a lot.
This guy is awesome. Makes videos that are fun and well informed.
Going to build one of these for my E90 tomorrow. Thanks!
What an excellent idea. I have an exhaust leak somewhere at the front of my car and can’t find it. Hopefully I will with this ingenious setup. Thank you from the UK.
Dude thank you so much! This vid is a God send when you suspect a vacuum leak.
i don't even have a vacuum leak, i just wanna make a smoke machine lol
How do you know for sure over time... without one?
Yeah you do
gavin endsley I’m on it. I’ll have a couple done momentarily.
Right! I'm so doing this...
Lol
Omg dude, u saved me a ton of time breaking my head on how to find a vacuum leak hahahaha
By far the best intro I have ever seen on any youtube car channel!
Great video...i do the same. I usually take the breather hose off and open the throttle plate and spray some on te back side of it and clean it with a toothbrush. Depending on engine also the IDLE air control motor pintle. Ive found it to really help as well. Cheers!
I watched the ads just to support u dude❤
Thanks for making this video. It enabled me to design and make a similar smoke machine. Used it today to find two vapor leaks on a Cherokee.
One suggestion: don't use a micro fiber cloth. I tried one but it did not create much smoke. Ended using a cotton sock. It worked great.
Thinking about making one for my grand Cherokee
I saw some videos on making DIY smoke machines but I like this design the best. I made one myself with a shop vac and a cigar and it worked but this is waaayyy better.
yep, I did too. This does work better, and easy to make.
Thank you so much for this video! This is exactly what I've been searching for online. You've really elucidated this. ❤❤❤
Oh man... from your method, I found that my vacuum hose is leaking profusely at the point it reconnects to the intake... no wonder my car stumbles upon low load accel. Great video man. Thanks a bunch!
(the hose that goes to the brake booster)
I know this was from 2 years ago but did it ever feel like you run out of brake boost when driving due to the leak?
@@christianjimenez3172 Not really, no. I think the vacuum is leaking far enough from the brake booster to not affect its operation.
You've just earned a new sub. with that smoke machine, dude!
Welcome to the channel man!
That's a very smart idea. I am a mechanic and I never thought of that cheaper than the original$$$$$😊
Great video. Easy and straightforward. Gonna make one up real quick. Hopefully it works
It won't heat up hot enough!!
Psh. I use a cigar like Scotty taught me. lol. Seriously though, nice job man! -Glen
you can't blow smoke through the entire system though it goes all the way to the fuel tank
Yeap. I chek my mercedes w202 with a joint of weed and same proces with the glove. Yes you can do it this way. But first you need to learn how to blow a good amount of smoke and not just a lot of air. I learned that my intake boot has 2 leaks and i get high af in the proces
@@TestaFranco lol i was really thinking about doing that
@@TestaFranco I want you as my mechanic.
I’m going to try this on my other car that’s having the same code. Great video!
Glad it was helpful man. Good luck!
Brilliant idea. Made almost exactly the same thing, however I used smoke pellets as the smoke source
YOU SIR are a genius!! Im gonna try this soon! Thank you!
Absolutely Positively Fantastic!
I also recommend using an aquarium pump (air) to power it. It can't build much pressure maybe .5 psi but it worked for me.
...or if you don't have that, but have one of those little battery operated inflators for an air mattress or big beach toys, that should work a treat as well
I heard in another video that you don’t want to use anymore or much more than 2psi cause you can risk damaging lines or causing more leaks.
@@LJT9393 how do you find one that pumps . 2 psi
Wow! I watched another tear everything apart and break more stuff in the process. I'm building mine today
That's really cool! Thanks for that! Went through this on our turbo with pressure and soapy water, but this is way better!
Glad it helps!
LMAO!!!! Holy Shit!!! This takes Mcguyver to a whole new level!! I died when he hooked up the glove!
For real lol.
As a e36 owner I would love to see some DIY videos!
love the glove on the intake idea, simple and universal.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I just made one of these & it works great! Next I'll try the Sea Foam!
I just happen to have almost everything to make this laying around... woot!. I believe this may save me a lot of time and money. I'm gonna give this a try to locate the source of my evap leak. Thank you very much
use smoke balls from last yars 4th of july celebration.
How’d it go? I have a P0455 code and gas cap, purge valve aint the culprit. I need to do this test n see if there’s any leaks. Also I’m getting gas sitting where I fill up the car.
@@JetAgeOfLotus you got something going on with your filler neck homie. Either neck itself or vent hose on the neck
Try using a small Disco smoke machine, comes with scented smoke too...
Thank you for your post! Its brilliant.
That's ingenious thank you for the idea. Great video.
Great DYI tool tip bro! Cost is the reason that i haven't purchased a smoke machine & im a a professional tech. I was looking at the the Ready Smoke @AESwave For $599 but this works for me until i gather up the funds. Again great tip.
watched a few vids on vacuum leak testing methods and this one definitely seems the most effective. hope it works, my skyline is idling like shit lol - thanks!
Did this end up working for you? My s14 is idling like shit too 🤣
@@robertkoripsky6407 yes! well, it was half of the problem lmao - turns out i did have a huge vacuum leak at the bottom of my air intake (was barely even connected, if at all) but also my MAF was fucked. definitely recommend checking those 2, lmk if it works lol i’m curious
Thanks for this, I have a boost leak on my BMW 135i and was going to buy a smoke tester for like £200. Now I'm going to try this
Mini smoke unit great can't wait make one Thanks.
Running Seafoam through the intake also does something called a "carbon bust" (or blast, depending upon who's tree you're under) andcit busts lose the carbon build-up in the combustion chambers. If you have an older Ford/car that won't pass emissions because of "Nox" then this will fix it. It'll do a lot to restore the overall condition of your intake and combustion parts. Just feed it a little slowly. An AC "tap-a-can" a clear plastic hose and a brass waterline valve will let you see/control the amount going through.
And hold the throttle steady, don't rev it hard, until the smoke clears and all the mosquitoes are dead.
How did you attach the can tap to the seafoam?
@@klown7463 Using an air-conditioning coolant can tap, the kind that holds the can and you grip it together and has a line coming off to the vehicle, just rig a fitting to fit your main intake port. It will bust loose all that carbon, pass the NOX test and kill every mosquito in the neighborhood. 😉
Once you have a Seafoam can that's been punctured, save it. Then you can use it for more Seafoam or, just for water which does a great if you don't wait so long until you have a problem. 😀
i have used water to do the same thing, but you have to be super careful not to dump too much or you can cause damage
@@stonewolf9459 Same principle, introducing liquid to the intake, it has to be done slowly. The chemicals in the Sea Foam just help scour the carbon a little better... And chase away the mosquitoes. 😉
Unless you have baby oil, a soldering iron, and epoxy laying around (in which case, you need to evaluate your priorities), this tool will cost more than a basic Amazon machine that you can return within 30 days for a refund
Beautiful job on the video, i’m really excited to see people benefiting from my smoke machine. I’m really glad that you were able to find that leak so fast in the oil cap. Just curious did you end up having to get a new oil cap To fix the leak? I’m always looking for creative people to collaborate with. Creating RUclips videos is so much fun, again great job with the video.
This construction was the easiest and most simple I've found. Great idea, and works great too! Yes I had to replace the cap. It wasn't seating snug because the guides were bent on the cap.
Brilliant! Made one in 5 minutes and it helped me a lot
Great vid and How To on making and finding a vacuum leak. Thank you so much.
The two o2 sensor codes could also be caused by low fuel pressure !
that (smoke tester)machine: nothing short of mcguyver
Dude, thank you for the DIY tip! Going to try this tomorrow.
Made one 15 minutes ago :-) Awesome, but you could have warned us about the smell. This is no small potato, I threw up from the smell after 15 minutes. What a stench :-) But the leak is found ! Thanks men !
“Looks like we got 3:50 so at 3:40 we’ll turn the engine back on” wait what
9:23
Haha I caught that after I uploaded. Meant to say 4:00 😂😂 you guys don't miss anything
😂😂😂
Lol my thoughts exactly
All that vape is the cause of this
Barry's Chemtool B12 is 1/3rd the cost of Seafoam and is designed for 4 stroke engines (Seafoam originally designed for 2 stroke).
Another tip/trick I got from an engineer is to add 8 ounces diesel fuel to every 7 gallons gasoline in the fuel tank. It ups the octane (stops pinging) and lubricates cylinders and valves.
I also run 10% ATF in my crankcase. It's an excellent sludge preventer/ remover. Keeps rings & valves from sticking, clears oil passages. 246K miles and a finger swipe in tailpipe comes out clean and dry.😊
I have found that using berrymen solvent in the can works just as good if not better than Seafoam. The cost is half price too. Worked for me many times. Nicely explained video too.
Best video yet. Thanks
Make sure you change your oil after the seafoam people!
Im sorry I never done that seafoam thing but after this cideo i want to do it.
But why is it necessary to change the oil? Excuse my ignorance.
The instructions on the Seafoam can say you should never use a vacuum to suck the Seafoam in. You should use a funnel and slowly pour it in.
Nice video, and if you ever think about picking up one of those code readers for yourself, I’d recommend the FIXD reader. Bought it as a Christmas gift for myself and it’s pretty nice because I can leave it plugged in at all times and when the check engine light comes on I can just pull out my phone and figure out what’s going on
Thanks man! Car ran rough and got running lean code. Got everything I need but bic pen! Doing it now and fix my e46!🎉
Was going to do Amazon but don’t want to wait til next weekend.
Your awesome bro saved me alot of money ! I didnt even have to buy anything! 😂
"I drive a BMW, not a Subaru." - that was a damn funny vaping joke, and I drive a Subaru!!!!
Me too i’m on this video to fix mine 😂
Thank you! Another BMW vacuum leak hack in my bag. If you search for e46 vacuum leak test you get an air compressor fabri-cobbled solution. I can work with a bike pump and soldering iron. The BMW brotherhood will eventually solve all of the factory problems with oil and coolant.
Last time I used SeaFoam the PoPo showed up.
You Rock! My initial reaction. Dope, simply Dope. Thanks
Awesome, man, and simple. Thank's
Umm that oil cap was rattling loose! How did you never see engine fuming from there and somehow there is no oil vapour on the cam covers? Should have been clanking away on idle it's so loose.
Make sure you always rectify leak and then retest further for others.
Putting the original filler cap on would have been cheaper. But you wanted a Chinese one
Yup.
It's crazy that the 2 cars that I owned for the last 10 years are a BMW and Chevy Colorado lol....and I am going to use this method. Thanks for the video
That's crazy! Wow! Awesome idea.
Looks like it's 3:50 so at 3:40 we'll turn the engine back on❓❓❓ Back to the Future🕐🕛
Exactly
Oh man your the real mvp 😁😁 just saved ya boy

Mathew Martinez You're welcome.
@@jumpinjojo u mean please?
I have all of this stuff to make this!! This is a lifesaver!!!
Brilliant. Also the seafoam is an interesting idea.
I’m surprised that that actually worked. I’ll have to try that out
Give it a go man and let me know how it turns out!
I bet my fog machine will work. I’ll try that first
@@Sh0ck556 Using such method i not a good idea... you're sending a greasy smoke (not rated for motor usage or high temp) in your intake, manifold, sensors and valves.
You might find a leak but you can cause worse damage : dirty sensor, valve and intake won't be a good thing in the long term...
I just took dabs and blew into the hose heading towards the brake booster. No extra tools needed LOL
Lol wtf. Now you have reclaim coating the inside of your intake just route a hose from your exhaust through the window and hot box away. Never mind the carbon monoxide.. no big deal.
@@thefogisgone3662 how did u get that idea from what i said i tested it with the car off? and it worked perfectly
@@Xiferr i was making a joke lol
Thank you for the idea. Liked, commented & subscribed!
Great video man!
Only BMW owners would pretend to have a vacuum leak just to marry their car😂 (i.e. the glove and the so called "ring-hose" clamp).
Jokes on you mr bmw owner, when I vape into my vacuum lines i can decipher any boost leaks i have ;)
Not bad, pretty good stuff to know Thumbs up and a like for sure
I tried to vape into my vaccum line to find a leak i never found the leak i just got really high lol maybe i should try a different vape.
pospc2 if this were real you first problem is to use an actual vape, not a dab pen lol
Do you drive a Subaru?
STOCK IX Watched a quarter of this video, saw your comment, and now I'm gonna borrow a vape instead!
This is awesome. Saw smoke comming out your oil cap and i thought wait a second. As it turned out i didnt put my oilcap on properly so that was the problem xD. Thx so much
Great video clear direction perfect Camara work
Did your check engine light go off after replacing the Oil Cap??? (fellow M3 Owner here)
It did but then it came back on because of a loose intake manifold.
@@TreatsOnTheStreets The loose intake was the problem. The test is invalid even though the machine idea is good. I tip my hat to you on that! Crimp off the breather and PCV hoses to fully pressurize the engine. Then you will find any leaks. Be aware that a scan tool is needed to shut off the vapor vent solenoid to pressurize the tank for evap leaks.
Wow.. Thats pretty awesome. I am a professional tech, i use the smoke machine at work when i need it. But you gave me an idea on how to save the 1k for my own and build one (more heavy duty of course) for use at home should i ever need it outside of work. Great tip. Be sure to check out my chanel.. I am eventually going to be doing an LS swap on my e36.
I dig the video. right before viewing I thought of using an old soldering iron to do the same thing. Thanx. Hopefully I can now find the reason for my 2jz gte misfire.
Stumbled on your channel, this DIY smoke tester is genius. Subbed.
I would like to know if the oil cap engine can cause the vacuum leak?
cius esnal most likely not but the gas cap can
cius esnal absolutely could cause a vacuum leak at the oil cap. Especially if the seal is hardened or missing altogether. A hardened seal on the dipstick can also cause a vacuum leak. You have to remember that the second largest vacuum hose on the engine is going to the PCV valve which is located usually in the valve cover.
Yes because some cars count on oil caps being completely sealed or else they can run bad. This is because the crank case pressure gasses in these cars are recirculated into the air intake and the computer accounts for that. cius esnal
that engine bay is pure porn
Wow great machine. Great video 😀
People like you are awesome.
How about using the chevy as smoke machine LOL
Now after you replace your catalytic converter your car will be great
Cant hurt them if u dont hve em
Great channel, great content. Beautiful car.
good Idea, going to try this tomorrow.
