Glad you mentioned the low-pressure requirements of an EVAP system. Most of the inexpensive, Chinese-designed smoke machines I've seen, which have the on-board compressors, go way over that pressure ~0.5PSIg limit yet still claim they're EVAP safe. I was curious, can the smoke machine you're using be used to test for intake manifold leaks or is the pressure too low?
Great video, I smoke tested my 2009 pontiac g8gt and I have to use a latex glove and ty-wraps to seal of the throttle body. Shouls I be getting smoke out the throttle body. Perge valve is closed and vent valve is close.

Ride is a 12 model Avenger with the 4 banger engine. Moving past the typical cap I've checked the following. 10" of vacuum holds indefinitely on the purge solenoid. When applying 12vdc on and off she opens and closes and holds vacuum as it should. Next, I visually checked the seals inside of the evaporative pump. Nothing out of the ordinary? Reassembled everything. My smoker is mineral oil based and has been my go to tool for engine sealing and is very effective. My question is how can I close the system on a 2012 Avenger to accurately perform the smoke test?

When I used my scan tool to do the self test. Evap system the gas cap was doing noise, maybe because I have a vented gas cap, but the tested passed ok. The problem I'm having is that my car has trouble starting in hot days, and also after filling the tank. What it could be, it's toyota Corolla 2003 engine 1.8

I have a Mercedes Benz. I can’t buy a scanner or find anyone who can run all the tests/sensors/valves. (Close vent solenoid) I was getting Intermittent low, purge flow and high, purge flow codes? P0496-97. P0455. small leak AND large leak codes? 🤔 but after replacing the purge valve, I’m only getting the P0497 every now and then (1-3-7 days) now (i think) but the others still may pop up) P0497 Low purge flow. Dirty or clogged canister? Should I just clean it out? Clean the sponge/fet etc? What will help my low/rough idle? That’s what I’m trying to fix. I’ve seen that if the purge solenoid on the canister doesn’t close to cause combustion, it will cause a low, rough idle 🤷♂️ It only needs to go up 500-1000 rpm to be completely smooth. It’s idling just around just around 1050 instead of 1200/1300 (1250 is my target) 🤷♂️ Tia.
Thanks for the video! Sorry I didn't get if the car has to be running to perform the test. I have a 2003 Kia Sorento, but I'm not sure were to put the hose...!?! Thanks
How would you use a smoke machine to figure out a p0171 p0170 code on a Honda ? Where would you connect the hose of the machine to? The intake or another place?
Thanks for the vid! I'm confused about the vent solenoid. Why is the vent solenoid 'open' with engine off? Do you mean it's open to the air? That would defeat the whole purpose of the EVAP system, lol. Or is it simply open to the EVAP system? And if it is open to the system, wouldn't you want it that way for the test?? I've got my new smoke machine coming tomorrow (8/29/2022), so I want to do this right. This dang P0442 code is driving me nuts!
Hello, The vent solenoid is open unless the vehicle is testing the system for leaks. This is because the fuel tank needs to vent with the expanding and contracting associated with temperature change. This ok be cause all the venting must first go through the charcoal canister to be scrubbed before entering the atmosphere. The system checks for leaks because if there was a leak, hydrocarbons would be able to vent from the tank without first going through the canister. To smoke test the system you must first close or block the vent solenoid off. I hope this helps and good luck finding you leak. Ryan Wilsing, Technical Instructor
I have a 2001 Silverado 5.3l what do you think my leak would be from p0442 small leak only turns on every other week or 2 weeks what would you guess that's coming from if you had to guess?
Great video. Can you tell me how I can close the vent solenoid on a 2013 Dodge Avenger 2.4 with out a snap on Polaris? Can't I just pinch off the hose?
Hello, A 2013 Dodge Avenger runs a ESIM Evap system and does not use a vent solenoid. The best way to test is to locate the ESIM which is mounted on the canister and pinch off the hose between the ESIM and filter. Hope this helps! Ryan Wilsing, Technical Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Cool. This is the same part that fixed my last P0455. I felt compelled to run a smoke test to check integrity of the entire evap system. You all are great
thanks for these info , i was told you only need to turn the key an on position and the vent valve will activate but i guess that is a lie !!!!! so you need a scaner to close the vent valve and then use smoke machine .. thanks again
Hello Beatriz, You can also manually close the vent solenoid by supplying it power and ground if a scan tool is unavailable. Thanks for checking out the video and reaching out! ~Ryan
Hey Beatriz, thanks for watching! Right, the vent solenoid will only close when the computer is attempting a system leak test. Using a scan tool or power and grounding the solenoid are the only way to force it closed. ~Mike
I don’t have any fancy scanner to close the vent valve. Can I disconnect and pinch the hose completely closed where it connects to the vent valve and then run the smoke test? (Assuming I know the vent valve is not the problem). Thanks
Hey Mike, sure you could do that. Like you said, that's assuming the vent is ok. You're taking it out of the system at this point. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Hey Kdsom, thanks for watching! Honesetly, you're best option is to take it to a trustworthy shop and have it smoke tested. A P0455 is a leak code. You could have a cracked line or hose somewhere that you may never find without leak testing. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
@@GoTechTraining I think it's easier to see smoke moving with it "freeze framing", it's about like watching injection patterns and vibrations with strobe lighting also. you can watch belt harmonic vibrations as well as many others things with your naked eye that way, kind of like poor mans super high speed camera frames being reviewed. of course being able to vary the strobe speed or synch. it helps a bunch(downfall of the timing light)
Super helpful. Been chancing an evap leak in a 2004 Corolla for a while and I didn't understand the vent valve was normally open or how to close it. Any guess what the least expensive scan tool is that has the ability to close the vent valve and read the pressure?
Need some guidance here, I did a smoke test for vacuum leaks on my Ford and one of the places smoke was coming from was the vent holes on the bottom of the diaphragm part of the egr. The smoke isn’t coming through the little vacuum line though, because that still holds vacuum and opens and closes the egr properly. The smoke is coming through the intake side of the egr. Further investigation showed that I could suck a decent amount of air through the egr even when it was closed. Anyone know if this is supposed to vent this way? Any guidance or advice would help a lot
Been a long time I see but taking a chance... Evap code so did Smoke test done on a Mustang '17 with no issues detected, no gas cap on this model. Garages are still unsure the cause on this vehicle. From time to time the engine light goes off for 1-3 days but comes back on. Last test was while engine light was on so really unsure how to determine what the problem actually is and it costs $150 each time to have this test run. Any thoughts?
Great video! Confirmed a lot of my suspicions with Evap systems and I actually just had an accord with a p1456 and after running the Evap function test it failed. I pulled out the smoke machine and smoke tested them system hoping the cvs valve or two way valve would leak and nothing. Ran another function test and it passed!🤦🏽♂️ Couldnt get the system to act up again! They can be bothersome when it comes to intermittent problems

Hey Media Junkie, thanks!!! That's a ESIM system on there. It has the little white and black assembly mounted to the canister that has weights inside of it. Check out my video covering Chrysler evap. I get into it there. Look in the EVAP playlist for it.

Hey Rocky,
I would check your purge solenoid for sticking open.

Great info, thanks. I have a 1991 toyota celica that i want to check through, it smells very rich whilst warming up, has poor fuel economy, and there is always a rush of air when i remove the gas cap to fill up, is this normal? Otherwise, it runs well, plenty of power etc?
I’ve seen that if the purge solenoid on the canister doesn’t close to cause combustion, it will cause a low, rough idle 🤷♂️
It only needs to go up 500-1000 rpm to be completely smooth. It’s idling just around just around 1050 instead of 1200/1300 (1250 is my target) 🤷♂️ Tia.
Mike is teaching, everyone be quiet. :)
Haha thanks Wyatt :)

Thank you, very good info.
Thanks for the video! Sorry I didn't get if the car has to be running to perform the test. I have a 2003 Kia Sorento, but I'm not sure were to put the hose...!?! Thanks
what does the vent in a scion xb look like? and can you just seal it up just for the test?
Very good we'll explained
Hey Nigel, thanks for watching!

I have a 1999 Camry 2.2 with 70,000. But now I have a evap code. Where would be the test points for evap test on this car
Thanks
Dennis
Hello,
The vent solenoid is open unless the vehicle is testing the system for leaks.

@@GoTechTraining - Thank you! It's impressive watching you effortlessly go through the diagnostics and repairs. Well done!
@@ChevySS1968 Totally agreed!!! Knowledge means less to get flustered about. Glad to have found this video. It answers a lot. :)
I have a 2001 Silverado 5.3l what do you think my leak would be from p0442 small leak only turns on every other week or 2 weeks what would you guess that's coming from if you had to guess?
Thanks for the information !
Thanks a lot for the tip , Go Tech👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Great video. Can you tell me how I can close the vent solenoid on a 2013 Dodge Avenger 2.4 with out a snap on Polaris?
Can't I just pinch off the hose?
Hello,
A 2013 Dodge Avenger runs a ESIM Evap system and does not use a vent solenoid. The best way to test is to locate the ESIM which is mounted on the canister and pinch off the hose between the ESIM and filter.
Hope this helps!

Hello Beatriz,
You can also manually close the vent solenoid by supplying it power and ground if a scan tool is unavailable.
Thanks for checking out the video and reaching out!
~Ryan
Hey Beatriz, thanks for watching! Right, the vent solenoid will only close when the computer is attempting a system leak test. Using a scan tool or power and grounding the solenoid are the only way to force it closed.
~Mike
Great video. Very informative..
Thank you Mike!

Eric o from south main auto had a video out were he used one it worked great
I changed fuel cap, then purge solenoid and last charcoal canister and still have p0455, and check fuel cap. Honda accord 2013
Please any advice, i have no smell or any visibly issue at least to me the car owner
Hey Kdsom, thanks for watching! Honesetly, you're best option is to take it to a trustworthy shop and have it smoke tested. A P0455 is a leak code. You could have a cracked line or hose somewhere that you may never find without leak testing.

@@GoTechTraining thank you mr Mike i will take to the dealership then.
Nice one Mike as always good info as normal enjoy the videos more brain teaser nxt keep my mind active in lockdown cheers
Hey Terminal Diagnostics, brains going to mush during lock-down, huh? haha!

Totally agreed!!!
strobe lights are good for lighting and watching smoke too or hillbilly it with timing light (lol) but having variable speed strobe is good
Interesting, you find a strobe light better than a regular light?
Mike Becker Senior Instructor
@@GoTechTraining I think it's easier to see smoke moving with it "freeze framing", it's about like watching injection patterns and vibrations with strobe lighting also.
you can watch belt harmonic vibrations as well as many others things with your naked eye that way, kind of like poor mans super high speed camera frames being reviewed.
of course being able to vary the strobe speed or synch. it helps a bunch(downfall of the timing light)
Great detail video.
Thank you very much Cheng Saetern.

Super helpful. Been chancing an evap leak in a 2004 Corolla for a while and I didn't understand the vent valve was normally open or how to close it.
Any guess what the least expensive scan tool is that has the ability to close the vent valve and read the pressure?
Hey John, thanks for watching! I would look into options from either Autel or Launch.

Hey Greg, thanks for watching! Ahh the good ole' intermittent EVAP leak...yuk!
