So many spot on comments here. The phrase I hear a lot in my area is “ it’s not worth my time”. Is it apathy or something more? Every day it seems like I’m sounding more and more like my father. People like Eric O are a dying breed.
My wife's car is a 2011 Escalade ESV and it had the same code and the same problem. I just fixed it about a month ago. I bought a Chinese knockoff Avoca Smoka and diagnosed it myself. First evap job I've ever had to do. Dropping and reinstalling that 31 gallon tank by myself wasn't fun! The evap monitor still hasn't run, and I still have the permanent code set. I've got an emissions test due, so hopefully it'll finally run soon!
Just did the fuel pump exercise this past summer on my 2014. Against all advice, I did the remove the bed option. I have the setup to remove the bed, but I can't raise the truck. Eric will have this done in less than two hours.
Eric O is far more lucky than I am, I have never needed to pull a fuel tank that only had 4 gallons in it! I've only done 3, and they were all within 2 gallons of full when I started - one was literally towed away from the gas pump! 34 gallons in that '96 Sierra. Step 1, figure out how to get 200 lbs. of gas out of a tank without a working fuel pump.
@@MrHugawa I'm sure that would go over well. One thing you do as a shop owner is never bad mouth the other shops in your area. If they get word of you talking smack to their customers, it can really turn into a crap show.
Great job Eric. You can do it for sure, but I'm not so sure I can do it. You're advanced diagnostic equipment and knowledge to use it shows why it's increasing difficulty for us shade tree mechanics. I've made my own smoke machine with limited success. My scanner is read only. And if I did know about software updates I couldn't do anything about it? It used to be the money light didn't intimidate me, but after losing a couple of battles like this it's putting fear of failure in my soul? So glad that I live in area that emissions testing is mandated!
When I read the Helen Keller reference, I knew we are in for some simple problem and wonder on the other shops not being able to 'find' the leak. 'Incompetence' or just plain laziness. A motorcycle shop here could make more money doing oil changes than getting the valve job done on my bike. I finally took it some place else.
What shocks and frustrates me is, this was an easy diagnosis and several other shops couldn't find it. That tells me I probably wouldn't want those shops to even change my wiper blades. We are in serious trouble folks! Thanks Eric for your professionalism and knowledge.
Eric, you make it look soooo easy! But, we knows it's NOT. Thanks for sharing how to locate that leak. Remember, fi you can do it, I can watch it. Thanks again guy. lol
I guarantee other shops or at least one other shop found the same leak. They just didn't want to repair the damn fuel tank. So send customer down the road with a diagnostic repair bill and move on to the next diagnostic repair bill. You sir it happens that you are honest and willing to take on all challenges. Good man. Great mechanic.
Today I got my LX470 back from an old shop I used to use. They corrected an improperly installed timing belt that the original shop refused to look at because there was no CEL. I personally knew something was up because I’m used to driving the dang thing. I drove it underpowered like that for almost 2yrs! Kinda sad, but also glad it’s back making power. Maybe I can enjoy it a while more…
Finding a mechanic/technician that actually knows how to or is willing to do what’s right is damn near impossible. It’s all about cash flow- part sales and labor costs. ESPECIALLY AT ANY THIEVING DEALERSHIP!
I love my Eric O videos. He is a humble man who claims if he can fix it so can you. Which is the absolute truth, anyone can do it. If they would apply themselves and put forth the effort to learn the way he did!!!
Glad that the Vacuum leak was a Big one... worked in Pharma before i retired and we had Ultrasonic Leak detector sniffers connected to Head Phones and you would point around the pipework and flanges and the whistle would be heard in the headphones plus the multi coloured LED lamps would rack up going from green through amber to flashing Red, being as the closer you got to the source of the problem ..great pieces of Kit...saved a fortune in time especially in a noisy location. Great Upload...
I'll happily watch and learn from every video you put out...shlurred shpeech and all! Personally, I think it's fantastic you're getting your teeth straightened. Thanks for all the great videos lately!
Have you ever been called to a dealership for help or had them bring you a vehicle to fix?? I'm sure pride would prevent it, but I was just curious. Nice pickup on the problem. I personally don't know much about cars/trucks or anything, but I enjoy trying to follow along. Thanks for sharing, Ron
Not just pride, liability. Eric O has a pretty big exposure and he has detailed all the insurances he needs to protect himself. Make that a factor of 4 or more and that is what a dealership is looking at...they are also a more attractive target. Notsaying a idividual tech, off the clock, would not be willing to reach out.
Heck, one time I had my vehicle at a shop that does tires and alignments, and they called to say they couldn’t get rear caster adjusted, nor could they get camber adjustment. I drive over in a different vehicle, get underneath and tell the guy yeah, there’s no caster adjustment available, and they weren’t smart enough to work the camber bolts in the bushings to get them loose 🤦♂️

Another good video, as an older car owner 12 Camry, 11 Sonata. I absolutely dred it when I see the money light come on. Have dealt with EVAP codes on both car. Have spent $1000's getting them fixed. I hate evap codes. Lol
I once worked with a stellar mechanic. His forte was fixing things most other mechanics could not. His advice was simple. “It’s broken. It’s not going to fix itself. Right, wrong or indifferent, do something. Anything. You will eventually find the problem.”
I like how Eric uses all his senses. This is not the first time he used a smoker and while he could see the leak he could smell it. As Diagnose Dan said recently sometimes you have to use the diagnostic tools god gave you.
I find it sad that a 2016 vehicle is considered "almost done" at 7 years of use. I grew up in NY and am aware of the fact that cars of the 50's era would rot out fenders and rocker panels by that point in life, but you would almost expect in 60+ years of engineering excellence they could be building stuff that lasted longer.
Obviously, it has a leak when you check it with the smoke machine. I can’t believe they couldn’t find that leak. I had a problem with my 2008 Honda fit setting P0456. The code only set in the summer in the warm weather, and in the winter code never set. Never had a gas smell. The vent and the purge solenoid, and the gas cap are all good finally figured out it was the evap canister. The previous owner must’ve kept over, filling the tank and wrecked the Evap cannister. I replaced Evap cannister with a used one from the wreckers and it is OK now.
If the computer can't tell them what's wrong they can't fix it anymore. Not that Mr O is like that. I have learned and used some of his methods/troubleshooting not just on vehicles but tractors as well.👍
From what i notice is shops are just lazy. And don't wanna do the work to get to the problem unless it's easy. I had a 14 Ford Escape leaking what was described as golden fluid aka oil lol. As the dealership told him and they didn't know what it was 😂. Anyway long story short the vvt solenoid crapped the bed on the rear. So a quick replacement and he was bad in business. Can't believe that couldn't find the leak.
I think that when a technician takes an organized approach, such as Mr. O here, then they can avoid feeling like they are mired in guesswork. Which would definitely make me want to throw up my hands. Mr. O is smart and very knowledgeable. Most importantly he knows to insist on an organized approach. My 2 cents.
@@mickblock Heck, even if a technician isn't anywhere as skillful as Eric O and didn't know how to or do any of the preliminary steps Eric used with the scanner, if their shop owns a smoke generator and they know how to connect it to a vehicle they should be able to find an issue like that.
Nice save Eric. Here in Michigan we don't have inspections. As long as the insurance companies and the State get their money for license plates, you're good to go. $afety 3rd right? Thanks for pointing out that the leak can be on vacuum and not pressure or vice versa.
It's okay Sylvester we know you're not a miracle worker you can do it do it just as good as anybody else can you're not Moses you just second in charge love you God bless
I've got 04 F150. Money light on for a while, "small evap. leak". When i fill the tank completely, fuel can be seen dripping from top of tank. I live in area that doesn't require testing so I'm kicking can down road a bit longer. Great video!
This is sadly a common problem that I've been hearing a lot .. most "light weight" shops (keeping it family friendly ) will pass along or play dumb when it comes to major jobs like this for all of the obvious reasons one shop even came right out and said to a friend we don't do that here when asked if they would preform the job...😬
I have a 2005 Silverado. It kind of surprises me that the top plate of the fuel module is metal while every other part is plastic on these tanks. When I had to replace the fuel module because of the same vent/purge issue ( same issue-due to corrosion) I sprayed it down with Cosmoline. Fluid Film would probably be just as good. Something sprayed on there is much better than nothing.

Great videos, Many thanks !!!
Eric O. Pointing out the incompetence of other shops in the nicest way possible. 🙂 Seriously, though -- how did those other shops miss that leak?!
Thank you Eric your videos are always a pleasure to watch. I learn something new from you every video watched it's amazing and you are an amazing mechanic thanks again.
Been watching you over the years and I've learned much. I appreciate your choice to share your skills.
You're doing right by putting the best light on it; People love you and are concerned. No more and no less. That's really not a bad place to be. I'm sure we're all glad the explanation is as simple as you say.
It's nice that people are concerned, but those that call and bother the shop are obviously not keeping up with Eric's videos. If they were following SMA they would know what the problem is since he has addressed it on several videos.
great stuff, as a Chevy owner with a large leak this will be valuable info to use, always like the evap vids, another last train to Avocaville fix, its amazing how lazy or incompetent other shops are, but they keep u busy, hope to see the fix
Before anything, check the gas cap. Been there two times. The first time the guy at the gas station didn't lock down the cap. Easy fix. Second time, the cap was faulty. Got a new one and the problem was eliminated. Another easy fix, for $45.
Badda Bing badda boom. Mr, O says, NEXT! 👍
It always amazes me that other shops that claim they have diagnosed the problem, never seen to find the problem. Especially when you find the problem in the span of, just guessing, 30 minutes to an hour?!
Makes me have no confidence in shops that looked at it before.
@@erniejones5008 That's why I try to do as many repairs as I can by myself. I try to get my wife to understand that while I ignore her on days off doing repairs on our vehicles.
@@JB-tz9pi wish I could I don’t have the knowledge or tools. plus I am temporarily disabled. I can’t stand for very long without a lot of pain. Hopefully it’s temporary at least. Plus my hands cramp up I easily. I can do things like change. My battery and air filter and wiper blades may be a couple of small things but that’s about it. I have a 2012 Malibu that needs a new headlight but you have to takeoff the front bumper and it’s gonna cost around 125 bucks that I don’t have.
I cannot believe how quick the vehicles in the north rust out!.great video Eric. Great procedure on checking purge and vent solenoids too. Thank you !
Had the palate expander in high school. Went through the same thing. You'll get used to it. Also crazy to think that a 2016 "isn't long for this world" when my 99 ram with 286k still is rust free in the PNW. I've been in plenty of salt too over the 23 years but they built and painted vehicles better back then.
It’s snowing here in North Texas. Makes me want to work on my truck. With your video playing in the background. Great videos! Love watching you work and teach. Have a good day!!🎉
Unlisted? It's like I've found a greasy Easter egg! So exciting!
Say Eric, any reason your videos are set to private and only viewable through shorts? Love the vids!
99% of the time I just click "hide" on shorts without looking for who it's from or what it might be. Stupidest format ever.
He releases to the public the next morning. Idk why he is doing shorts but you're not missing out on anything except being early to the party
He said he was testing something a few days ago. My guess is he is trying to grow viewership with shorts. So many people scroll endlessly through shorts and don't browse the youtube so I think the hope is to get some of those people subscribing and watching full length videos. He's been making the full video public the following morning. I got the bell notifications on so I get notified on everything he posts.
Ah ok, thanks guys!

I'm a remove bed bolts on driver side, loosen the other side, and jack it up guy myself lol
For months I have waited for the return of the Avoca Smoka! Now I can sleep peacefully for a while.
I wonder if any of the shops in the area watch your channel to see if they recognize any of their failures to learn how it's done?
the customer should visit each of these and tell them to watch Mr O so as to find out how to do your job.
No, I’m of the opinion that Eric deserves the revenue his shop gets as a result of so much incompetence 😜
@@MrHugawa I'm sure that would go over well. One thing you do as a shop owner is never bad mouth the other shops in your area. If they get word of you talking smack to their customers, it can really turn into a crap show.
Another victim of the rust belt
Thanks again guy. lol
Even on things like this, it is nice to see the repair.
Kills me to hear things like “she’s a 2016 so she’s not long for this world “. I live in the deep south, that’s still a “new” truck down here. 😂
I was going to reply the same thing. A 7 year old truck they probably paid 35k is at end of life. Amazing and sad.
Down south is great for cars. You can find cars from the 1940s with solid frames. Floor pans seem to always rust tho.
Your speech is fine, don't worry, just keep up the great content.
Great diag Mr. O. It's a shame other shops overlooked that "little" leak
They didn't want to deal with it, picking jobs they want to do it's happening all over this country 😒 🙄
@Dale Langila laziness is at a all time high. It's either that or not enough book time for them
@@charlesporch5516 At $130 an hour, you'd think they make great money regardless. Who knows.
How did all you people comment 8 plus hours ago the video is saying it only cane out 37 minutes ago

Maybe I can enjoy it a while more…
the ole hidden video link in a short trick again... I like it lol
really sneaky Dr O. not helping with our trust issues!
Finding a mechanic/technician that actually knows how to or is willing to do what’s right is damn near impossible. It’s all about cash flow- part sales and labor costs. ESPECIALLY AT ANY THIEVING DEALERSHIP!
It’s no surprise you found the leak! 👍 the diagnosis you made was interesting Thanks!
I love my Eric O videos.
He is a humble man who claims if he can fix it so can you.
Which is the absolute truth, anyone can do it. If they would apply themselves and put forth the effort to learn the way he did!!!
I've often wondered if the reason some shops "can't" find something is because they don't like to certain repairs for one reason or another.
love that Avoca ‘Smokah.
expensive bit of apparatus but a great tool.
How can you miss a leak that big? Nice job Eric!
Lack of training or incompetence?
Steve Wonder works at 1st shop and Ray Charles works at number 2
Because the previous guy was a 'Ding dong!' 😆
The other shops don't know how to pronounce soapy wooder.
@@johnevans9751 🤣🤣
Again, Eric, you are very thorough. That's what makes you so good. Keep up the good work, good man.
I always like when they "can't find the problem". But I think a lot shops do not have mechanics, they have parts changers. Huge difference.
Excellent video. Fast diagnosis. I can't understand why others can't find these issues.
Make that a factor of 4 or more and that is what a dealership is looking at...they
are also a more attractive target.
Notsaying a idividual tech, off the clock, would not be willing to reach out.
There have been cars come in from a dealership
Heck, one time I had my vehicle at a shop that does tires and alignments, and they called to say they couldn’t get rear caster adjusted, nor could they get camber adjustment. I drive over in a different vehicle, get underneath and tell the guy yeah, there’s no caster adjustment available, and they weren’t smart enough to work the camber bolts in the bushings to get them loose 🤦♂️
@@jwboilermaker had a cv problem on a car. Took it to a shop and they said they couldn’t find anything. Still up on the lift and I reach under and jiggle the cv. Guy was amazed. I swear some of those people in shops deserve to stay in prison 😂
@@TurdJesus Different profession, but... My home is at, say 8410 W Wilson. The cross streets are all numbered, so, I live just west of 84th Street. I contracted for a delivery of landscaping rock. Delivery time came & went. Got a phone call, "Where are you? My boss told me you're by 35th Street but I can't find you!"
Eric I'm not sure if it's just me, but the last 3 videos I only found them in shorts, and clicked on link in shorts to watch full video. Just letting you know. It could be just me 🤣
I really appreciate your videos but I don't know how you find time to record and edit them so well. I just hope you continue to do it for a long long time. Thank you!!!
Glad you found the problem. I learned something. Hope the other techs that worked on this vehicle learned something.
Another good video, as an older car owner 12 Camry, 11 Sonata. I absolutely dred it when I see the money light come on. Have dealt with EVAP codes on both car. Have spent $1000's getting them fixed. I hate evap codes. Lol
Love your content Eric! Keep up the awesomeness good sir :)
You’re the man the customer should’ve just brought it to SMA.
GM's must be the easiest evap systems to diag out there. Hard to believe the other shops couldn't figure this one out.
My day is complete-a new South Main Repair video!
So is the failure of the other shops to find that leak due to incompetence or laziness (or both)?
I think that when a technician takes an organized approach, such as Mr. O here, then they can avoid feeling like they are mired in guesswork. Which would definitely make me want to throw up my hands.
Mr. O is smart and very knowledgeable. Most importantly he knows to insist on an organized approach. My 2 cents.
But you can be sure they got paid for nothing.
@@mickblock Heck, even if a technician isn't anywhere as skillful as Eric O and didn't know how to or do any of the preliminary steps Eric used with the scanner, if their shop owns a smoke generator and they know how to connect it to a vehicle they should be able to find an issue like that.
technician is an overused word.
Nice save Eric. Here in Michigan we don't have inspections. As long as the insurance companies and the State get their money for license plates, you're good to go. $afety 3rd right? Thanks for pointing out that the leak can be on vacuum and not pressure or vice versa.
As if state inspections have anything to do with "safety".
Same "problem", not issue. Issues are magazines and newspapers
@@CaptainRon1913 No. Perhaps you should look the word up before trying to correct others. Most words have multiple meanings.
Issue-an important topic or problem for debate or discussion
Man I hate evap leaks. I'm a 4Runner enthusiast and the 01-02 4runners are notorious for EVAP leaks and I've never once had a shop get them all on the first try. Wish I lived in NY, you're a phenominal mechanic.
