*UPDATE:* The customer stopped back a few days later and we installed the OEM antenna on the roof so it would solve the issues with the wet headliner. He bought the car in the condition it was in, back up camera and baby shark fin were all ready on there. He did not want to do any further testing with the internal key detection antenna's at this time

Chrysler dealer tech here, that shark fin antenna is not factory. Also, whoever did that hack job wiring is an idiot, wiring should never be run across the face of an airbag. That could interfere with the proper op of the curtain airbag right there. That's a federal offense, as it could be considered tampering with federally mandated safety equipment. One common problem i'm seeing with the factory antenna is the threaded portion of the mast gets broken off in the base of the antenna. Sometimes, the broken part can be unscrewed out, otherwise, the base has to be replaced. That rf hub has to be moved out of the way to replace the base. Seeing your update comment, glad that you were able to figure it out and fix it. Also, if the fobik is not transmitting, putting the fobik on the pushbutton and starting the car with it can help to diag. Edit: The interior antenna for the fobiks is under the center console, that's why the fobiks have to be in that area of the cupholder for the interior antenna to pick up the fobiks. I agree with you, Eric about aftermarket accessories installation, and about never tapping into a module power feed.

    • @baggins1

Yea the only place you should really run power from is the battery or the power distribution center. Make sure you use an inline fuse (in this case they didnt do that either which would of saved the customer from a no-start). Then if necessary use a relay and connect that to either the ignition, or reverse light, to power say aftermarket powered windows or a backup camera, respectively.

Hi, I am a new guy in your channel. I have been watching your videos since a few months ago. I was put in my house on medical leave since May 2021 and honestly your videos are awesome as you work on vehicles, explain the procedures, trouble shoots the issues and provide humor or conversation in the process. I used to work on my cars and motorcycles at home, however, my medical situation has kind of taken me away from enjoying my garage and maintaining my cars. Sir, I was looking for someone like yourself in my area and got lucky because it is hard to find someone with your integrity in the auto mechanic field. I just wanted to say that ALL your videos, regardless how simple/logical the issues are do not erase them. Eric, your distrust for aftermarket equipment and installation is well justified.
I've seen too many cars where an aftermarket stereo amp was installed with no fuse or circuit breaker. The system required a 100 amp circuit but only installed using 10 gauge wire. Should have been 4 gauge or better. The wire was run through the rocker panel, with like the Journey, no anti-chafe on the wires. Good way to burn a car to the ground.

I put 154K on a Journey. When I traded it, it ran like a Swiss watch. And the ONLY problem I had with it was warping rotors.
Tried Napper rotors and calipers - no joy. The only ones that lasted any significant time were the OEM parts. Otherwise, that Journey was a dang fine car and I was kinda sad to see it go. Of course, I didn’t stuff any after-market crap in it either.
That 3.6L engine was no slouch either. It would haul the mail if you asked it to. One of the very few Chrysler products I enjoyed having.

Dang, you're good! The meter thing could be a problem for people with oversimplistic thinking. Always calibrate your instruments. A known current draw with a lamp similar to what you do ROUTINELY with scope on a rope is the ticket !!!
As to the diagrams - you always have to check your circuit diagram for the circuit in question BUT you also always have to check the power feed circuit too. You MUST check both. It is VERY COMMON industrial practise NOT to include side loads in single-circuit diagrams. For that you must consult the power feed drawings. I used to do power shutdown planning for a huge 20+ megawatt site. Hydro would call me at holiday times to see what we were doing. It takes days to plan these while consulting drawings and old load lists. Proper schematic searches are priceless. Nevertheless, your nose for trouble and your fabulously good visual inspections and your 'nose' for specific circuit problems and water leaks are what renders you as one of the best automotive guys on RUclips. Probably THE best.

Chrysler really don't have a "shark fin" for a radio antenna. In fact who ever had that installed wanted to go "El cheapo" route because at the dealer if the customer wants a back-up camera installed they can easily do it. Factory wiring harness has the hook up for the back up camera and all it takes to activate it is a radio firmware update via USB. Worked under a Chrysler master tech as his apprentice and learned a good deal about the brand and it's various models. This is also a big reason why I don't trust aftermarket stuff to be installed right by someone else. I usually do the install myself. I get what I need and I know I won't have any issues.

Don’t beat yourself up, mate. Brain farts happen to the best of us. Especially with aftermarket bullshit, sometimes it’s impossible to know where to start because there’s no rhyme or reason to any of it. It was a great diagnostic process either way.

I find that using tools instead of finger tips kind of helps with that. Seems to let them heal but also less strain on the digits. Also, soak them in Epsom salt for an hr here & there when they hurt. Does wonders for me.

What would you do without Chrysler products? Go broke? When I was an apprentice back in the day we called them fuse-able links. Not sure why, but it did help to distinguish them from the old glass cased fuses. I'm working on a Merc, starts but dies. Electrical nightmare so going to service a Jeep as that is going to be a pleasure in comparison.

The way I see it is this: It really is dependent on the unit of measure. If you want cheap and disposable, Japanese cars are perfect, if you want a yard ornament buy a newer dodge, nissan, mazda, chev, pretty much pick one of any manufacturer... if you want solid engineering but not excessive, old volvo. If you want speed/hp go old chev. Torque? Old Ford. Loud and slow? Old Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth. The CDP big blocks were called elephants for a reason. Handling? Easy, and I am gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but Lotus. Reliability? Give up that pipe dream now, nothing out there is guaranteed to ve reliable. It's a question of luck, not manufacturing or design limits. Every model from every make has units that prove reliable and ones that fail. Ease of repair and supply of parts are better metrics to go by. Thoughts?

Nice diag and fix. Gotta love AM installers just pick a power wire & splice into it but probably would've been fine if they used grommets & did a proper installation. Smart customer going OEM & eliminating the water intrusion
