- In this video I show how if you rush through a diag and make the right call but end your diag there it can come back to burn you. Even though you did nothing wrong and found a problem the light is and will come back on. To you or I this is no big deal but to a frustrated customer this can be a hard thing to explain. @@richardcole6690 Sounds like fun, especially the sandwiches.:) So do they all live right there, too? We often see the wife and the kids, and all those lunch preparations, but it doesn't look like a residential-type property. As for Scotty, he is extremely calculating, and this is a bit of a turn-off for me. And as a mechanic he seems a little sloppy. Eric is a complete opposite, I think.
@@paulparoma nope they have a house... that is just the shop... he has showed bits of.his property in videos about his jeep and what-not... in fact in older videos the kitchen wasn't even there... just a counter top and a hot plate lol
@@richardcole6690 That's what I thought: It's a garage with a lounge and catering area.:) I like how the whole family is involved in the business. It's very traditional, but you don't see that too often these days. I've been to that part of upstate NY many times. At one point, it was popular with Polish immigrants, of which Eric is a prime example.
Back in the late nineties, I replaced the fuel pump in a Chevy Lumina.
After I was all done it still wouldn't start.
I took the fuel tank back out and found that
I had not plugged the new pump to the wire harness.
After that, my coworkers would sing " Plug it in, plug it in..." from that Glade Plug ins commercial.
Oh I did that once too, years ago. I replaced just the pump and I didn't plug it in, in the tank. Live n learn
DOH!! I hate when that happens!

I over-torqued bolts on an aluminum intake manifold, cracking the body. It was a long time before I stopped hearing about it...
Man this guy is good. Getting tired of saying it but here is a triple issue problem and its diagnosed in the time it would take me to say "There's your problem lady". I think were all getting spoiled. Mr O is a class act and about the best we'll see in a lifetime.

Gas tanks and canisters and evap valves and PCV valves, idle solenoids, MAF sensors, fuel injectors and relays - these can drive you bonkers !!!!! The rusted filler tube is a new one to me, and having learned of this, will be on my inspection check list !!!! Thanks for showing me 10% of the troubles these items cause !!!!! I am much more wiser when doing "" Money Light "" cause hunts !!!! DO NOT add more gas to your tank when the filler nozzle clicks off - that's when ALL the evap codes get thrown and you have to replace the charcoal canister starting at $125. Keep up the good diagnosing Eric, I click the like button every time I watch !!!!!!!!! Hi to Mrs. O., kids and dogs, and Vinny !!!!! Fathers Day coming soon, new tools, Diagnostic Computers, weekend getaway with only Mrs. O. !!!!!

Tell steve there's a recall on the NF Sonata for the canister and filter. If it hasn't been done yet, he could get that part of it fixed at no cost.

The Sherlock Holmes of the automotive world. Most of us appreciate how your mind works. You don't stop at the obvious, but continue to verify your diagnosis & fix. If more technicians were as thorough as you are the field would be respected a whole lot more than it is. The quick-fix is not always the end of the repair.

The problem is that most techs are paid flat rate, so they just want you in and out.
@@shane250 Yeah, it is a sad situation. You (as a tech) want to do right by the customer & you have those above you pushing you to get the car out to boost profits. Unfortunately time is money so the tendency is to take those shortcuts as you progress in your automotive career. Would you want your doctor or dentist to have the same attitude?

Of course not... That's why I quit. Used to be a tech at Mazda, Ford, Subaru, and Peugeot.
I came from a place (Israel), that diagnostics is a separate job from mechanic, and it takes 2 years of studies and 1 year of apprenticeship (under a master diag) to get your diploma. There was also only hourly rate there. I used to love it so much that I did it for free on the time off work. Then I immigrate to Canada, and techs here know almost 0 diagnostics. They learn as they work. It takes them 15 years to reach a diag level of someone who did my route. It also makes them "one dimensional", so they tend to stick with the same manufacturer, because they didn't study the entire technology arsenal of all manufacturers.
When I started working here, I saw I was spending 90% of the time doing mechanical work, and 10% diag... So I quit, went to school, and now I'm an architectural technologist. It's a cool job, but I'll never love anything like I love diagnostics.
@@shane250 I completely understand. I went back to working on trains because the money & support was NOT in the automotive industry. The manufacturers & other entities claim to be helping the technicians to be, but here in the U.S. I do not see it happening. Other countries have apprenticeship programs set up so that you are bound to succeed with a combination of training and hands-on experience. The best course I had here was a community college certificate program lead by techs who were still working in the field. They had a wealth of knowledge. Now it seems that the younger generation (& technically minded) do not want to do the manual grunt work of brake, suspension, engine tear-down, etc. Unless you have a program set up like you went through to guide & teach the new techs to be it will get worse!
A laser pointer can be helpful to find the smoke on those really small leaks but you probably knew that. Love your vids, thanks

Once again Eric O gives a Grand Master Class in the Correct Diagnostic Procedure. Wow! This is an amazing tour-de-force demonstration of what makes Eric a genius. He does this as though there is no other way to proceed, but not one in a hundred mechanics would have done any more than plug that sensor in. Why would they? "There's your problem lady!" One and done.

Thanks for the lesson on evap systems. You showed your true colors on this trouble by going the extra mile on what initially was easy, but in reality there were some lumps in that mash potatoes. Keep being the thorough mechanic you are. Your skills are tremendous and you have helped a lot of us out here.
It is oddly comforting when a mechanic tells me that my problem was just my being a moron.

Totally understand that. On one hand its slightly embarrassing, but mostly you're just so relieved its not something complex/expensive.
Every time we drive by Avoca on the way to get the boy to/from college, I yell "Avoca Smoka!". The wife is not amused.

When I worked as an electrician I turned on breakers to fix many issues over the years
That's why the helpline call centers start with "Does the outlet have power?", then "Is the cord fully plugged in?" Had a cord one on a computer service call years ago; they had power strips under a desk, and somebody unplugged the wrong cord to do something else. I think at the time we waived the charges, since they did other business with us. They were blushing all over the place, because nobody thought to check the cord.
I was doing wiring on my son's house. After I finished, one of his circuits was out. "My stove doesn't work." I panicked. I told him I didn't work on that and didn't turn the breaker off. Sure enough, the breaker was off. I tripped it when I was putting the cover on the breaker box.
I thought we agreed that you’d never tell....

I've been enjoying your repair videos for a while now, and today this one popped up. Coincidentally, my son has a 2010 Sonata with an evap system problem (P0456 very small leak). Your video gave me some very good information to help us find and fix the leak. Love your easy-going approach, and great humour!
It's really easy to overlook the simple things! I was installing a new CV axle on my wife's '06 Trailblazer. I had everything bolted back together, and went to put the brake caliper back on the bracket. That's when I realized I had moved the caliper to the other side of the axle to give myself more room, and had not moved it back. Switch the lever on the ratchet to 'loosen' and start pulling it back apart! D'OH!
This is the key that separates your shop from the 'hacks'. Yes you have a diag. fee for looking into stuff (I would imagine 1hr min....) Sure you could have spent 15-30 minutes farting around plugging something back in, shipping it and charging for the 1hr. What'd you do instead? You decided "Well, he's paying for at least that min diag charge, let's get his moneys worth......" And you figured out 3 issues for the price of 1 diag charge!

Just purchased a LAUNCH CR629. Engine changes I can do and have done many times, PRE /96. Now, though retired, to move on to the easier diganosis of 'normal' automobile troubles. Laugh!

I know i'm starting to sound like a broken record but here we go again. How many shops would have taken the initiative to go after that evap leak when they found that connector unpluged? Like .000000000000000001 % perhaps? That's why i love watching Eric O work his magic because he understood that this customer didn't just put a new canister onto his vehicle for the hell of it. There had to be a reason. And his dedication to hunt down the REAL PROBLEM is highlighted in this video. Honestly i would have NEVER found that small leak. That's why i'm not a mechanic. Smiles.

Every time i see the massive wheel arch rot on those vehicles i am glad i retired from northern NJ and landed in Virginia!! I have a 2004 Dodge truck and a 2005 Chevy Malibu. i sometimes find a cheap weak laser pen helps trace smoke as its shows up the beam of light quite easy... works better under the bonnet/hood though
