You know its always a treat when clickspring uploads. 100% the most satisfying channel on the internet. Clicks all the springs and turns all the dials. With just the right amount of polish with finish as brilliant as brass.
17:45 We really have not changed all that much. The oldest " walks into a bar"-joke is on a clay tablet from ~1700 BCE, but my favorite proverb/joke from the same tablet is one that reads "The dog understands 'Take it!', but it does not understand 'Put it down!'" (compare with contemporary "no take only throw" memes). The person who wrote that was more ancient to the Byzantines than the Byzantines are to us, yet we still make the same observation and find it humorous.
Every generation starts out wanting to change the world... only to eventually realize that nothing has changed for millennia... because humans are humans.
Congratulations on completing this beautiful device, you should be proud of yourself. Of course Internet law states that now we have seen your cat you must name him/her and acknowledge his/her contribution.
Man such an amazing piece of history and an unreal recreation. Imagine seeing this when it was first made, mind completely blown. Great series and channel!
You SIR don't make AMAZING machines - You SIR are the machine. Can't remember when I stumbled upon your channel. When I see you have uploaded a new video, if need be, I will be late for work just to watch it! Can't wait to see what you take on next. The quality, the explanations, the detail, the how&why, the tools (and making of your own tools), the machines... shold I go on... ate unparalleled to anything else I see out there 😂 Thank you so much for showing the world your smarts and skills. You SIR are appreciated - Thank you and cheers!
Man I have to say I get so mesmerized watching you work. Absolutely phenomenal!! I have watched every video you have put out for us to watch. Can’t wait for the next one. Can’t come fast enough!
It was for practice. This series is fairly old (it used to be patreon-only content), and he went on to execute engraving fabulously on the card press build for Chris Ramsey.
At about 11:40 when you're putting in the blued screws, my OCD prompted me with a thought. I noticed all the notches in the screws aren't symmetrical in relation to anything. Is there a reliable way to tap holes/make screws where you can be certain that, for instance, all the notches allign with a radial line from the center?
My only machining knowledge is from a machine shop class I took for my physics degree, so the only way I can think of would be to temporarily hold off on cutting the notch, and find a way to tighten them in place without a screwdriver and then mark where the radial line should be before finally cutting them. Im sure there's a simpler way though
Yes there is, I cover the method you describe here: ruclips.net/video/QxJZdQk-MBg/видео.html There are several other methods that end up at the same point. Generally though, I don't do it for something like this as it invites injury to the mechanism should the screws become mixed up at a later service, with timing nevertheless chased by forcing threads - Cheers :)
when attaching two gears together, is there a reason they aren't keyed? just for ease of manufacture, allowed by adhesive being strong enough for the forces involved to prevent slippage? or are keyed shafts not done (historically?) in this field?
A form of keying is generally used in horology, a sort of deformation fit, known as "staking". The original device was keyed more deliberately with square holes & arbors, also part of modern horological practice where significant force is involved. Square holes & arbors are a lot of fiddly work, and a staking set is quite an expensive tool, so I have presented the project with some simplifications to avoid either requirement. However the plans can be easily modified for traditional staking or square arbors, as desired - Cheers :)
Chris, I notice you have a lot of empty pegboard behind the workbench. For most blokes, this would be source of great joy, as in: "I get to buy a whole bunch more tools now!" But in your case, it's more likely to be a case of: "Oh boy, I need to _MAKE_ a whole passel more tools to fill that space up." 😁
One of those 'it's really just a matter of scale' things - I've been watching your videos since 2020 or so, and have been watching Cutting Edge Engineering videos for about two years. It's strange how many things that both channels have in common, especially watching the custom tooling episodes. CEE does heavy plant repairs - diggers, graders, etc. but the custom tooling fab is really similar at times. Not something you expect
Hey Chris as you know loctite sets up from lack of oxygen,an interesting thing I've been doing on small parts is to put them into a container and purge it with argon from my tig welder it sets solid overnight. Hope you can use this.
This turned out freaking amazing! Please tell me you plan to sell at least a kit of instructions and plans to build these because I would buy one. Also, that level of detail and craftsmanship is outstanding.
I have used laser printed parchment paper and acetone to transfer designs. I will keep the damar varnish and transparency in mind the next time I do a transfer. Looks like you get a better toner transfer.
Looks like the kitty wants to join, try giving them a piece of paper of their own next time they wanna sit on yours. They might just be trying to mirror your actions, as far as I know it's a a common bonding thing cats do.
when you had shown all the engraved parts together, i had thought i misunderstood the construction slightly because you had engraved internal parts. i was wrong about being wrong.
Hello Chris, I wHello Chris, I was wondering if it is possible to have an antykithera mechanism that isn't as advanced as yours, as in not move in retrograde and instead every planet moved in a constant speed? would it be possible to use the same function used in clock hands as in how there is one gear that is attached to a smaller gear on top that is connected to two gears, one on the top and one at the bottom?
Compared to all of the engravers I've used, yours is so quiet. Is that something you're doing in editing or is it genuinely a soft noise like it sounds in the video?
All this and a cat too?!
All future projects will now take twice as long 🙂
2nd channel for the kitty???
We are truly blessed

The piston fit on that oiler cup had me swooning
That you engraved parts that are on the *inside* takes the cake.
How my world becomes better one click at a time thank you for the upload.
Me when i was hooked up to a morphine pump
What a wonderful journey you have allowed us to follow, thank you Chris. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Merry Christmas to you too mate :)
Holly crimbus that engraving is beautiful. This may be my favorite thing I’ve seen on RUclips in a long time
Sincerely, thank you. Your videos are inspiring.
Words can't describe the respect and admiration this video deserves. 💫

Human technology has advanced immensely. Human nature on the otherhand is the same as it always was. 😂
So casual for such a work of art.

Bodie, head of QA and morning alarm clock...
Incredible work from start to finish. What a joy to watch!
Amazing project showcasing incredible craftsmanship. It's been an education watching this.
Chris, an absolutely delightful series of videos from start to finish of this build. You are a true artisan. 👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely agree, a true artisan, a word so much misused these days but Chris is the real deal. Stunning work.
This is absolutely wild. You sir, are a scholar
Astonishing work ! And a cute cat as well ! Marvellous.
Dude that turned out so phenomenal. Your artistic skills are off the charts.
is skills of an artist are pretty good . . . but can he draw a dragon?
@@stocktonjoans Remember the consumate "V"s
thank you quality inspector, very cool!!
Wow, just wow. Thank you for this.
An artistic masterpiece from the smallest screw to the finished product, absolutely breathtaking
People say art is subjective but I call this fine art
Man such an amazing piece of history and an unreal recreation. Imagine seeing this when it was first made, mind completely blown. Great series and channel!
I love how you engraved even the interior components. Such care and art in things that aren't usually visible.
Stunning, really enjoyed the series. You have fantastic skills.👌
Truly a joy to watch you work 😊
Absolute legend!
Мастер!!! Мастер золотые руки. ❤❤❤❤❤
Clicked on Clickspring so fast ! Engraving!!!
And it's done!
Fantastic! Absolutely fantastic.

Thank you for the kind words mate, terrific to have you watching :)
Loved this the first time I saw it; and G'day to Bodie
Thanks.
Absolute Legend.

The weight of those parts must be so satisfying....and beautiful engraving!
I can’t handle this level of awesomeness 😢
Years and years of careful expectation management directed at systematic research-practice loops.
Did Chris chisel intricate designs on parts that are hidden underneath the faceplate? Madness!
It was for practice. This series is fairly old (it used to be patreon-only content), and he went on to execute engraving fabulously on the card press build for Chris Ramsey.
Madness?! THIS. IS. CLICKSPRING!
*highfive*
Amazing project!
Not just an engineer but an artist too, with Sylvester as a sidekick 😏 I bet Tweety is jealous!
Very cool to see it all come together.

Beautiful. Always such wonderful videos.
1 million percent I don’t have the patience for this.
Looks amazing.

Wow an early Christmas present I am so happy right now
I hope this beautiful work brings you many commissions in the future.
Amazing work as always. And the quality assurance cat seems to approve. :)
Hola saludos cordiales desde Colombia
Happy Days!!!
Just finished a my mechanics upload, right after this vid drops!
What a treat!
Masterful, as always.

Love these videos
aw, the cat is so cute, he wanted to contribute to the project

Boy, do I look forward to these videos! I love how your skills include incredible engineering accuracy, chemistry and art. Amazing.
i have an old electro magnetic dome clock id love to engrave like that ... amazing work
Hey can I have that thing if you're finished with it?
I want it.
Stunning
0:35 in-depth Cat scans, nice
This turned out freaking amazing! Please tell me you plan to sell at least a kit of instructions and plans to build these because I would buy one. Also, that level of detail and craftsmanship is outstanding.
Glad you enjoyed it mate, yes the plans can be found here: www.clickspringprojects.com/
Love the channel!!!
Work of art. Cheers 🍻 from Australia
Gorgeous
Exceptional.
Thank you.
Excellent.
I haven't the slightest clue why, but I just assumed you had no pets. Suddenly, shop cat. Cute kitty :)
Perfection with metal.....
I have used laser printed parchment paper and acetone to transfer designs. I will keep the damar varnish and transparency in mind the next time I do a transfer. Looks like you get a better toner transfer.
I noted the transparency wasn't allowed to go through the fusing drum for the damar varnish method.
Clearly, patience is a virtue…
OH ITS HERE
Looks like the kitty wants to join, try giving them a piece of paper of their own next time they wanna sit on yours.
They might just be trying to mirror your actions, as far as I know it's a a common bonding thing cats do.
Clickspring cat!? Maybe a macrame cat toy for the next project! :-)
A tuxedo!👍
when you had shown all the engraved parts together, i had thought i misunderstood the construction slightly because you had engraved internal parts. i was wrong about being wrong.
Would finger cots be more convenient than the leather pads you pick things up with to avoid fingerprints?
New Clickspring video? I guess I’ll go to sleep later!
Peace!
Chris, could you describe your emotional state immediately after the final assembly? How did that feel?
Hello Chris, I wHello Chris, I was wondering if it is possible to have an antykithera mechanism that isn't as advanced as yours, as in not move in retrograde and instead every planet moved in a constant speed? would it be possible to use the same function used in clock hands as in how there is one gear that is attached to a smaller gear on top that is connected to two gears, one on the top and one at the bottom?
Artist Clickspring and machinist Clickspring can't be the same person... Please..
Name of inspector kitty meow?
what will be the next project?
👌👌👌
Kitty!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What is your cat's name?
😎👍
❤️🔥
Compared to all of the engravers I've used, yours is so quiet. Is that something you're doing in editing or is it genuinely a soft noise like it sounds in the video?

It's Click cat.
You are a Picasso of mechanical world
The quality control meownager is pretty strict.😁😊🐈⬛🐈⬛
I have O.C.D. and bipolar, your vids are the most relaxing and pleasing to watch, keep up the awesome work, cant wait for the next project.
Your cat is such a GOOBER. Give it many headpat pls n ty
