Vegan five years. I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar or oil and low salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, sprouted flourless grain bread, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.

Then this recent change was the final push - poultry, eggs, fish, and dairy are gone! My stomach was terrible on a regular basis before all these changes, so any adjustment period for my gut bacteria has gone unnoticed haha. Really just feeling improvements daily
Slowly adjusting my lifestyle to switch all my leather & clothing products over to vegan friendly versions. I actually switched most of my bathroom products a few months ago anyway - also got rid of all those chemicals!! And switched to plant based, cruelty free.

    • @StevenTPriest
      @StevenTPriest 5 лет назад +12

@@The-Rain-Ninja I'd first assume that the "vegetarians and vegans" is including the french fry and Oreo vegans rather than WFPB vegans. In that case, the group is still getting too much sat fat, trans fat, salt, sugar, etc. to reflect the "Plant Based News" community.
      But let's go with it...
While that may be statistically true that vegans have a higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke, it is also true that fewer vegans have heart attacks, ischemic strokes, cancer, etc. But vegans aren't going to live forever, we'll eventually die of something. So what will be on my death certificate? Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if I died in my 90s as a result of a hemorrhagic stroke. My grandfather ate the SAD and died of a hemorrhagic stroke in his early 70s after suffering for years from atherosclerosis, open heart surgery, carotid artery surgery, etc. May have the same thing on my death certificate, but I'm hoping for many more quality years before that happens.
That's where statistics can be a bitch. If you have a study group of n=2 with a 50yo omnivore dropping dead of a heart attack after being disabled for the previous 5 years after his first heart attack and the other is a 90yo vegan who dies of a hemorrhagic stroke after enjoying decades of excellent health. The flawed conclusion of the study would be that vegans have a much higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
Or I might get hit by a car (again) when I'm out running... NEWS FLASH: "Vegans have Higher Risk of Getting Hit by Cars--Should Eat Fish for Traffic Safety"

I've been plant based since 2013 and I'm sure it saved my life. I listen to Joe Rogan's podcast (some of them) because of the interesting guests he interviews. His interview style leads to very open conversations. I felt the "debate" style show he had with Dr. Joel Kahn was terrible frankly, as Dr. Kahn was pitted against a guy who constantly talked over him and refuted the real facts. It was not a serious conversation or debate - it was more of a competition to see who could talk over the other with the same talking points over and over. I don't think Dr. Kahn was the best spokesperson to have for the Plant based argument either, and he seemed poorly prepared for the onslaught of broscience being thrown at him repeatedly. Dr. Greger could have been more interesting, and he probably would have remembered a lot more technical data when challenged. Dr. Pam Popper would have been a solid choice. Dr. Esselstyn or Campbell may have argued their case better, but they also aren't very good speakers. Dr. McDougall would have been a poor choice too, but hilarious because he has a short fuse.
Joe Rogan seems quite willing to admit when he is wrong, he has an open mind about most topics, except this one...he loves his bow hunting, MMA, and he takes testosterone replacement so he can feel like a 21 year old still. He's kind of a super macho guy. I believe his hatred for veganism is his perception that it is un-manly. I think there's lots of men who feel that way (I did at one time, when I was much younger and dumber). I Wish we could figure out how to change that attitude in general.

Maybe I'm over-sharing private details about my life, but I can attest to what vegans claim: I tried carnivore diet for two weeks back in the beginning of the year. What did I get: kidney stones and a noticeable decline in sexual function. Did I lose weight? Sure did, but at what cost? What was all that animal protein and fat doing to my veins and arteries? I went back to a pretty standard diet and saw no improvements in the following 8 to 10 months. Now, in just 7 days of meat-free diet, I'm seeing an impressive improvement in my sexual function, besides having more energy and reducing my waistline.
I'm very excited about the benefits in my health. My cardiologist "threatened" to put me on statins in case I did not lower my cholesterol levels. I should see him in one month and I'm pretty curious what the results of my next check-up are going to be.

Against my better judgment I had sausages and bread (no alcohol) and landed up in hospital with acute pancreatitis that never went. I ended up needing a whipples operation. I realise this is just my personal situation and story but I have since met many people especially young women who have got cholecystitis and pancreatitis from eating meat or exacerbated by eating meat. What about the effects of oxalic acids? Oxalates can inhibit iron absorption. I'm vegan, but I have to get my main calorie source from fruit (RIPE banana smoothies) because it's the only way I can get carbs (and thus enough calories) without high oxalic acid content. I also have to be very choosy about my greens, which are also super important for my daily calcium/phosphorous ratios to stay 1:1 (whole orange mono meals also seem to help with this since they have more calcium than OJ). Bok choy and soft leafy greens like romaine and green/red leaf have ideal ratios without the high oxalate content. I don't get kidney stones, but they do run in my family and I get other symptoms that most people don't equate to oxalates. Rich meaty smelling urine, low energy, skin dullness/ acne and teeth problems. I think a lot of people fail the vegan diet due to eating too many oxalates (nuts, spinach, chard, grains etc) as well as poor calcium to phosphorous ratios. I will say, my whole life, my digestion has been compromised due to lack of overall fitness (skinny fat), poor posture/weak core as well as lack of enough sleep. How much sleep someone gets, and how strong of a core and level of physical fitness are huge factors in how well we digest and absorb food, and I think is vastly overlooked.

hello there, i dont know if this will maybe help u a bit or not re: oxalates in greens inhibiting iron absorption?
i too was worried about this as i drink quite a lot of raw green leafy's daily & ive always had very low iron.
i pack about 300-350 grams of raw kale and spinach down into my vitamix till its firmly three quarters full. Then i add as much pineapple as i can fit on top, (cos its the best mask ive found for the taste of those giant kale & giant spinach leaves) Plus some berries (whatevers cheapest) & some apple & raw carrot (always got em in fridge for horse treats) & a big chunk of turmeric root on top. (w/the accompanying black pepper & Tbs chia seeds or ground flax.) I only include turmeric root since a neighbour gave me a whole pillow case full of the stuff! So then i pour water in till its an inch from the top, shoving chopstix down side of blender to make path thru dense kale forest for water to trickle down. I drink the whole blender full, usually in a day, then make it again next day. Sometimes i still have some left on day 2 so wont make a new smoothy till the next day. Its clockwork for me now on at least 5 mornings a week, as part of my transition to whole food vegan 8 months ago - from junk-food vegan for years B4 that. ive lost 20 kgs during the 8 months plus my digestion is now Brilliant! But the best bit is i just got my bloods done and my iron is now up there with THE GOOD LEVELS! For the first time in my life! Thyroid liver & kidneys are also all great & cholesterol is lowest its ever been! (3.9 Australian =just under 150?) The rest of my diet is more like "The Starch Solution" & like u, i dont sleep enough and have a weak core. (only walk for exercise) PS... i drink 2-3 cups soy milk & at least 3 litres water a day. (water & calcium are supposed to help flush out oxalates) This is the best ive ever felt! Good Luck to you hun!

In this review they celebrate the churches success over the last 140 years to change western society to a "garden of eden diet" (vegan) so Jesus will come back to start the millennium. The SDA church and it's members own Kellogg, Sanitarium and 17 of the world's largest cereal companies, 117 medical and nutrition universities and are the second largest church owned educators after the Catholic church. They actively fund studies that support their point of view and also fund the opposition to anyone daring to question their message. The difference is that killing animals to protect your crops is unavoidable unless you want to starve to death. However, farming animals for food is completely unnecessary. Its just killing for pleasure, because you enjoy the taste not because you need to eat it.
Animal products are optional for survival. There’s no reason we need to eat them when we can get our nutrition from far more ethical sources.
Furthermore, feed for animals requires more farmland than just using it directly for crops that people can eat. That means your going to kill many more animals, in addition to the ones you are farming, in the process of protecting your fields, because their is more farmland in use than otherwise.
At the end of the day, your killing less animals if your population gets its calories from plants.
If you exist suffering is simply unavoidable. The question is how much of a suffering footprint you leave behind, that’s what matters. Less suffering is a good thing.

It's so obvious in hindsight. The strategy was to focus on a single point they thought they could win, and then declare a full scale victory (even if they'd lose every other point). When debating people on veganism or climate change I find that strategy continually. Any point I will make, they just stop arguing without conceding the point. And the keep throwing more and more arguments, and I keep deflecting them, and their hope is just to score that one point and then celebrate having won the entire argument.

I am vegan and, prior to switching, my doctor came up with a fresh health plan listing the vegan diet and NO statins, but he could not resist throwing in daily aspirin, "for insurance". He also added a protein levels test to ensure I was getting enough. Few years later, on a CT scan for a weird headache, the scan came back ok for cancer or other things but they said they could see that 3 weeks ago I had had a BRAIN BLEED, and they asked did I remember anything back about then? I could not. But as soon as my doctor saw that report he immediately removed "daily aspirin" from my health plan! He also found that my protein levels on my old, high meat diet were 10 on a scale of zero to 100, but now on the plant-only diet, they were 50, a 500 percent rise. I never take protein supplements, so it's got to be the protein-sparing effect from eating a diet richer in carbs, the whole plant carbs I was eating a large amounts. If the body is low on carbs it will attack and dismantle protein molecules from diet or even from existing muscles and use the carbs to feed the brain. You can imagine what happens, your 20 dollar steak turns in to 20 cents worth of pasta just to get some carbs, and you've been screwed by you own brain. :) Love the diet, BTW, 7 years now, 77 years old, no meds, no symptoms, cholesterol 147, down from 270, BP 72/54 taken 30 minutes after climbing 30 flights of stairs double-stepping, acid reflux gone, ED half gone, wow. I lost 40 lbs kept it off, eat all I want, never hungry. Why wouldn't anyone want that? Beats me. When I started they predicted a 50 percent chance of heart attack in the next two years. All whole plant food diet was the way for me to go, I didn't know till I did it. Don't believe the naysayers here. I can get that some young folks will not know much difference or will say it's not worth it being vegan, but wait, time will come when it will, if my guess is right. There is so much disease that disappears on this diet, and it happens so fast.

That 'debate' with Chris Kresser was a good example of why scientists should not debate non-scientists. Kresser referred to low-quality, low-impact reviews of low-impact, low-quality studies with small numbers of participants. He cherrypicked these from the fringes of the literature and argued that older science is lower quality simply because it's old. Kahn got understandably frustrated with this, because, not having seen what Kresser was referring to, he couldn't rebut it during the podcast. Kresser, cool and collected and convinced of his own bullshit thinking, probably just convinced more people watching at home to eat meat and not listen to cardiologists.
