Good dogfight, despite all other jets I own in DCS, Mig-21 is still my favorite. Perhaps all the challenges with this jet create a perfect mix of immersive experience.

As an Indian, I really love to fly the Mig 21 in DCS. But you have got to admit that it's a difficult platform to fly. Not forgiving at all. You cross the AOA limit for more than second and you stumble down a 1000 feet or so. Love it but like they say "Mig 21 is a pilot friendly aircraft, it's just picky about who it wants to be friends with"

And pakistans military general himself told that "india was going to attack pakistan by 9:00pm if we don't tell em about returning abhinandan (the pilot)" . And they know really well what a full fledged war with india will be like . You don't even know that how much heated the matter was , specially the Indian side coz dude they literally lost 40 soldiers due to a terrorist attack who were infiltrated from Pakistan's side . The IAF MiG21 Bison is a generation ahead of the Bis. It is integrated with the R77, R73 probably even the Israeli Derby ER and the Python 5. The pilots also have a HMD.

Hence proved, a upgraded old jet with a good pilot and slight size advantage can be deadly to a much more modern jet under a lot of conditions. In the end pilot skills matter the most, given the machine itself is not like stone age.
I really like how you take on the lesser aircraft to show that every airframe has its advantages, but most importantly, the pilot makes the difference.

Hi! Nice video! I wish there was some mod available to properly showcase the Indian Migs which are an upgraded 'Bison' variant. With helmet mounted targeting system, glass cockpit, ESA Radar, modern HUD, R77 and R73 misslies, and several avionics upgrades not to mention a different powerplant and , it's far more capable than what is simulated in DCS.
The Indians mig 21s use R73s, they have an all glass cockpit with helmet mounted targeting. Very different from the plain vanilla Migs. As per the USAF during air exercises in 2004 they found the Indian Mig 21s the most difficult to handle, due to their small size and jack rabbit acceleration.
I think it would've been a fairer representation if it was a guns only rather than a fox 2 fight because the only thing common between the Soviet Bis and the Indian Bison is the aircraft itself. The Indians use R73s with the Bison and it has an all glass cockpit with helmet mounted targeting. Otherwise absolutely loved the video as always!
@@johnhermann7498 I didn't say it about the technology just that it is having a lot of crashes here in India in recent years killing many pilots because of poor maintenance and the ageing airframes and the governments inability to replace them which are beyond their life span and even with modern tech it's still a stopgap improvisation but will hold up with competent pilots but will get outclassed by modern fighters tho
I am a huge fan of Growling Sidewinder. Trust me, this guy really is amazing at DCS. He is fair and straight forward. And this why, as a Pakistani, I really respect this guy. And no doubt, he will easily shoot down F15 at F86, he's that good.
Not sure about this. In the very near future, the "machine" will be doing the flying. We're going to see pilotless aircraft without human-passenger G restrictions, that will fly rings around any human. Fighter pilots are not a growth industry...
@Imran nawaz Right now they are, yes. But AI is rapidly advancing to the point where it will be used for combat. A machine can out-think a human in many situations, such as calculating missile launch envelopes, fuel-power performance, night landings, precision refuelling etc. You also want drones that can operate even when communications have been cut off (which is very likely in many scenarios.) They will be autonomous soon, just as a cruise missile is autonomous. It's just a matter of time at this point.

Hey GS, great video. My only complaint is that by design the MiG-21 could carry no more than two APU-60-2 launchers (the fact you can equip four of them in the mission editor is a bug). I suggest you try out single missiles per pylon, as the Fishbed flies like a brick with twin racks.
8:59 in terms of the sneakiness, I do agree with that because this plane is manly used as an interceptor, in the Indian Airforce whereas the Su30mki, is the main fighter aircraft in the Indian Airforce. Also about this planes awful avionics and missiles, this plane will be replaced by the HAL Tejas.
@@vivekkaushik9508 but f22 carries only 4 missiles! After firing all 4, basically f22 has to engage visually like any non bvr fighter. But f22 is a killer fighter even using canons. If you want to kill f22, take 5 planes at least to get even a chance!
Having the initial Vietnam era versions of both jets (Mig-21F single cannon and only 60 rounds and a pre-E Phantom which didn't have the Vulcan) would be real dumpster fire :D.

Sadly we dont have the indian version for DCS. That F-16 shot down claim is just false propaganda. All F-16 were counted and none is physicaly missing. Also the wreck of the MiG-21 still had all its missiles attached to it. It never had a chance to shoot down anything. Greetings from Germany

That's not an Indian Mig21 Bison. Indian Mig21 Bison has Aveonics of the 4th generation. The display is multi functional digital display in Indian Mig21 Bisons. This one is analogue. Pure Mig21 "Fishbed". IAF Bisons also pack High OffBore Sight R-73 missiles unlike this one which was carrying cold war era Vympel K-13s.
I seriously doubt there is a mod available for the MiG-21 Bison in DCS... but yes, a modern IAF MiG-21 would have better avionics and likely better Fox-2 missiles.
@@doncalypso Well Indian Mig21 Bison has a 4th generation aveonics and packs a lunch with a Combination of R-77 Fox 3's and R-73 High Off-Bore Sight Fox-2's. The Mig21 in DCS has Vympel K-13 Fox-2s of 1960's era. R-73 Fox 2s are the most capable dogfighting missile, I guess. IAF Mig21 Bison beat USAF F-15s in Cope India 2004 and 2005 with the Bison configuration.

The Indian MiG-21's are equipped with helmet mounted displays to bring it up to decent standards considering its essentially a vintage aircraft. The JF17 is quite modern compared to the 21. The serviceability and spares seem to be an issue for both sides but the pilot training of India seems to be better simply because they've been using it for quite sometime and their MiGs are heavily upgraded. Remember to keep the comment section respectful and do respect the fact that both have their own strength and weaknesses.
Still man it's no match to any other fighter in a close range guns only dog fight. When it comes to bvr the upgrades do certainly make it a competent fighter.
Helmet mount display does help in dogfight. But we are in a BVR age. JF17 is also developed from Mig21(Pakistan also has J7G which is also a modern version mig21), JF17 development also used many feedbacks from F16 pilots in Pakistan. So its kinda a jet with both eastern and western ideas. The biggest change is to use side intakes, which allow a much bigger radar the mig21 can never fitted. This is a huge advantage in BVR combat, which is extreamly hard to counter even with a better pilot on mig21.
@@qiyuxuan9437 I'm today year's old when I found out that JF17 was developed from the MiG21. I thought it was a bespoke Chinese design. India uses the MiG-21 for interception and ground attack roles, for BVR engagements they have Sukhoi 30MKI, MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and recently acquired Rafale's. Although the range of the Rafale's Meteor is better than the rest of the aircrafts. No way anyone is fielding a MiG-21 for BVR.

Thanks to DCS we know that that Cold war era Mig-21 with Vympel K-13s (and not even a Modern Indian Mig21 Bison with R-73) can smoke JF-17 with 2:1 ratio.

The 21 is situated so oddly in DCS. It is hard to fly to the edge of it’s envelope, but damn is it capable. The advantage of the 21 is that it is small and it has a decent weapons and gear selection. Nothing about the 21 stands out, it is just there.
funny story because my dads a pacifist and I want to be a fighter pilot flying the f16 he said the only airforce I could join even though I'm British is the Pakistani airforce because he believes they purposely miss their targets even though my family have no connection to the Asia or the middle east
Indian Mig21 Bison is armed with R73 Archer and an upgraded radar. DCS doesn't reflect that reality. It would have been completely different dogfight in that scenario. Great video though.

The Pakistani lied by saying that it was a crash while doing some practise manuvears for the Independence day parade. What a coverup. It was the pilot of the f16 shot down by wg Cmdr abhinandan, who was beaten to death by uneducated villagers who that it to be an indian pilot. That's the real story.

Mig 21 is armed with R73( AA11 ARCHER) and R77, the MiG-21 also recieved an upgrade in 1998 which included better front visibility, better redar and better avionics.But I don't think we can do it in DCS.

The sequel every Pakistani and Indian viewer has been waiting for lol. In reality though, it was an F-16 that shot down the MiG-21 in 2019 as the JF-17s were doing ground attack. But still this is what everyone wants to see anyway.

Hi! Nice video! I wish there was some mod available to properly showcase the Indian Migs which are an upgraded 'Bison' variant. With helmet mounted targeting system, glass cockpit, ESA Radar, modern HUD, R77 and R73 misslies, and several avionics upgrades not to mention a different powerplant and , it's far more capable than what is simulated in DCS.
The Indians mig 21s use R73s, they have an all glass cockpit with helmet mounted targeting. Very different from the plain vanilla Migs. As per the USAF during air exercises in 2004 they found the Indian Mig 21s the most difficult to handle, due to their small size and jack rabbit acceleration.

I think it would've been a fairer representation if it was a guns only rather than a fox 2 fight because the only thing common between the Soviet Bis and the Indian Bison is the aircraft itself. The Indians use R73s with the Bison and it has an all glass cockpit with helmet mounted targeting. Otherwise absolutely loved the video as always!

Not sure about this. In the very near future, the "machine" will be doing the flying. We're going to see pilotless aircraft without human-passenger G restrictions, that will fly rings around any human.
Fighter pilots are not a growth industry...
@Imran nawaz Right now they are, yes. But AI is rapidly advancing to the point where it will be used for combat. A machine can out-think a human in many situations, such as calculating missile launch envelopes, fuel-power performance, night landings, precision refuelling etc.
You also want drones that can operate even when communications have been cut off (which is very likely in many scenarios.) They will be autonomous soon, just as a cruise missile is autonomous.
It's just a matter of time at this point.

Hey GS, great video. My only complaint is that by design the MiG-21 could carry no more than two APU-60-2 launchers (the fact you can equip four of them in the mission editor is a bug). I suggest you try out single missiles per pylon, as the Fishbed flies like a brick with twin racks.

if you're in an Indian MiG-21, you should be having R-73s. Because apparently it was because of the R-73 that an Indian MiG-21 shot down an F-16
Sadly we dont have the indian version for DCS. That F-16 shot down claim is just false propaganda. All F-16 were counted and none is physicaly missing. Also the wreck of the MiG-21 still had all its missiles attached to it. It never had a chance to shoot down anything.

That's not an Indian Mig21 Bison. Indian Mig21 Bison has Aveonics of the 4th generation. The display is multi functional digital display in Indian Mig21 Bisons.
This one is analogue. Pure Mig21 "Fishbed".
IAF Bisons also pack High OffBore Sight R-73 missiles unlike this one which was carrying cold war era Vympel K-13s.
I seriously doubt there is a mod available for the MiG-21 Bison in DCS... but yes, a modern IAF MiG-21 would have better avionics and likely better Fox-2 missiles.

R-73 Fox 2s are the most capable dogfighting missile, I guess. IAF Mig21 Bison beat USAF F-15s in Cope India 2004 and 2005 with the Bison configuration.

The Indian MiG-21's are equipped with helmet mounted displays to bring it up to decent standards considering its essentially a vintage aircraft. The JF17 is quite modern compared to the 21. The serviceability and spares seem to be an issue for both sides but the pilot training of India seems to be better simply because they've been using it for quite sometime and their MiGs are heavily upgraded.
Remember to keep the comment section respectful and do respect the fact that both have their own strength and weaknesses.
Still man it's no match to any other fighter in a close range guns only dog fight. When it comes to bvr the upgrades do certainly make it a competent fighter.
Helmet mount display does help in dogfight. But we are in a BVR age. JF17 is also developed from Mig21(Pakistan also has J7G which is also a modern version mig21), JF17 development also used many feedbacks from F16 pilots in Pakistan. So its kinda a jet with both eastern and western ideas. The biggest change is to use side intakes, which allow a much bigger radar the mig21 can never fitted. This is a huge advantage in BVR combat, which is extreamly hard to counter even with a better pilot on mig21.
I would say IAF pilot training does not match those from the PAF. Look at the MiG21 attrition rates.

India uses the MiG-21 for interception and ground attack roles, for BVR engagements they have Sukhoi 30MKI, MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and recently acquired Rafale's. Although the range of the Rafale's Meteor is better than the rest of the aircrafts.
No way anyone is fielding a MiG-21 for BVR.

The 21 is situated so oddly in DCS. It is hard to fly to the edge of it’s envelope, but damn is it capable. The advantage of the 21 is that it is small and it has a decent weapons and gear selection. Nothing about the 21 stands out, it is just there.
funny story because my dads a pacifist and I want to be a fighter pilot flying the f16 he said the only airforce I could join even though I'm British is the Pakistani airforce because he believes they purposely miss their targets even though my family have no connection to the Asia or the middle east
