I dont have a fear of the ocean but after playing subnautica I just get confused as to why people fear the ocean. My playthrough is easily summarised as me categorising what's a cutie and what's an asshole. The most I got scared was when I underestimated the proximity of a reaper for me to turn my head and get a lil spook when he was in smooching distance. Being an Aussie raised on a beach probably helps with the whole thalassophobia thing.

Hey, Butch? I'm really concerned about your neck, speaking as someone who is 50+, spends all day in front of computers, and suffered horrible neck pain from bulging discs and bone spurs until they fused my C6/C7 vertebrae about a decade ago.
I notice you keep bending over your desk, look up "text neck" It puts horrible force strain on it!
Up your ergonomic game: Consider a 2nd or 3rd monitor, with an adjustable mount, so you can look up and straight ahead at your primary monitor.
If you're still squinting, have your peepers checked: It might be time for readers, or contacts if you've online vanity issues 😉. Perhaps a bigger monitor or screen?
Set a silent timer to remember to stretch: You're going to be editing parts out anyway, right?
Your neck will thank you, trust me!

the devs knew to place the reaper at the shortest point from the life pod just to fuck with people and i think they intentionally code that one specifically to be far more agressive just so that everyone will encounter it where as most other reapers you have to go so much closer to it in order to have an incident.

    • @DarkDragon1889
      @DarkDragon1889 Год назад +92

Yup. Captain Mandibles (my nickname for that one specifically) has eaten legit EVERYONE who played through this game blind.
On my first run I DID have the thought to try and enter the Aurora from the front of the ship bc it had blown apart, but I wanted to travel from the back and around the far side of the ship to do a **full circle of it** before entering. I also didn't realize that the roars were from a creature; I thought it was ambiance due to the scale of the crash site.
You can guess how that went. 😂

1:39:38 Butch getting mortified by a Sea Treader walking in front of an anchor pod is a very innocent kind of hilarious because he doesn't know they're as harmlessly docile as a Reefback at this point, so all he sees is this three-legged monstrosity walking menacingly in the distance.

My particular fear is fear of Underwater Suspension. If I can’t see anything above, and I can’t see below, I flip out. So I tend to, when playing, actually stay low enough to see the ocean floor, but close enough to a sense of safety (a base, land, or the surfsce)

Made the terrible decision of looking down and almost had a panic attack. Pitch blackness with random metal structures reaching up at me. Never a-fucking-gain. (Apparently sunken ships are not as rare as you think)That plus the coral we went to see was dying. Bleached white mostly with only a few fish. Not worth the trauma.

Finnaly i see someone thats actually scared just like i was when i played it the first time :D Great video, i really like the narrator voiceover and the fact that you did not do cuts that skipped half of the game but we can actually watch you progress, explore and see the emotions. Also, the fact that i can watch a grown man almost brown his underwear is great :D
I have been looking for a video like this for a very very long time.
    SPOILERS:
I never realized the energy core thingie is at 69m below the water level :D (nice).
The fact that he spends more than a minute trying to get himself to get the lithium and it not even being lithium is quite humorical.
The first sea emperor encounter is also quite humorical.
In the DeGasi habitat, he gets so close to scanning that water filtration machine but he never does and its just like YOU ARE SO CLOSE PLEASE (oh i didnt know its mentioned by the director)
OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU GOING TO THE BACK WHY ARE YOU GOING IN NIGHT TIME OH MY GOD IAM SCARED SO MUCH I DONT WANNA WATCH THIS OH MY GOD OH GOD
honestly imo the best case scenario is that he will just get eaten by a reaper and never go there ever again
nice hes going to the nose and its day time
OH NO HE IS THERE HE IS THERE RUN RUN RUN
    WHAT WHAT HAPPEND
WHERE ARE YOU GOING NO DONT GO BEHIND THE SHIP OH MY GOD NO WHAT
WHERE ARE YOU GOING WHY ARE YOU GOING INTO THE MORE AND MORE DANGEROUS PLACES
NO NOOOOOO NOOOOO WHYY IS THERE A REAPER TAIL
    HOLY SWEET JESUS
welp now i understand why its called the worst scare of your life
i mean atleast you googled it now
good job restarting from the save
nice you got it jesus christ that was a ride
i dont really think iam gonna update this too much anymore because i want to enjoy it and not pause all the time, but if something really insane happens i will update.

Congratulations, you have accomplished something that I thought was no longer possible to experience. After beating the game multiple times in various modes (which, granted, always took a long time), I kept going back and starting again. But an essential component of my favorite video game had died. I knew too much. I knew exactly where to go to find and build things, I knew what the various creatures were, their strengths and weaknesses. But a first play-through of the game is really special, because you know none of it. Fear of the unknown is what makes Subnautica a timeless (and terrifying) experience. But your narrative and reactions to the various parts of the game, even though I knew exactly what would happen at each moment, you helped me to remember a time when I didn’t have all those answers, and I could relive my first play-through by watching you through yours. Thank you for facing and conquering your fears, because it helped me remember the time I had to face and conquer mine.

To Sir Captain Butch, Elite Professional Subnautica Player.
I’m in awe of how you push yourself confronting your fears, and it is an enormous inspiration. A part of entertainment is when the hero overcomes adversity. You face adversity AND your subconscious response to great effect. To see how you have gone from the first opening of the top hatch on lifepod 5 to piloting the Cyclops while visually standing in the ocean, gives me a great feeling of pride on your behalf.
I have recently taken inspiration from your adventures into the oceans of 4546B, and challenged myself both with spiders and ladders. It still costs me a lot of laundry, but if you can fight it, then so can I. I mean, it’s not like you have to take up diving, or I have to keep spiders for pets. I just need to control my own response to uncomfortable situations. I actually managed to evict a spider this week, all by myself. It took two cups of coffee to put myself back together, but I did it!
I love the format, it’s very insightful to hear your thinking, you narrate at a very comfortable speed, and (being from Norway) I love hearing a proper British dialect. For all my anxieties, I am quite an Anglophile…
    Your partner in phobiafighting

I can't describe how much I love this entire experience of you playing subnautica. At first, I was intrigued by how someone with such a strong fear of the ocean could even play the game. I myself felt scared venturing into some deeper, extensive areas and I doubted if I could finish the game too. And then I saw you being scared even in the safe shallows in the beginning. In parts I thought it was entertaining seeing you being so scared at places I knew for certain was safe, but it reminded me of when I first started the game, the time when I jumped at any sudden sound or movement. Then the video just made me feel so touched and happy, seeing how you continue conquer your fear and eventually actually succeeded in finishing the game. I really don't know how you did it, but you did! The whole vid just reminds me of my first experience of subnautica. I haven't felt like that for a long time since I have already finished the game for four times and know pretty much everything about it. It just brings me back so much good and bad memories of this game. Thank you so much! Props to you for being so brave and overcoming it all. Will definitely watch the whole subnautica playlist by you later on.

Barely over one in a hundred have ANY phobia! ( Edit for clarification; You seem to be a plausible exception, which is good! I mean either that or you're an actor worthy of an Oscar )

  • @CinJyxxe
    @CinJyxxe Год назад

Fascinating to see the exposure therapy work in real time. Phobias are irrational, like he said, but you can teach your brain that the things you're afraid of won't hurt you through repeated neutral experiences. Over time, the subconscious mind will recognise that personal safety hasn't been compromised despite the intense emotional reaction, so whatever is causing that reaction must not be that bad. Plus, there's something to be said about how much energy is required for the brain to maintain intense emotions for long periods of time, so without major changes to stimulate the fear, you'll gradually become desensitised. And exhausted.

@@ButchX3I know I'm four months late to the party, and I usually don't bother with replying to old comments, but I'll make an exception this time. Just in case you see this, Butch, just know that your Subnautica series is *literally* the best one I have seen here on RUclips, even better than Jack's, and I'm not just saying this to make you feel better - I geniunely mean it. Jack's is still the second best, but something about how geniune and open you were about your feelings during this series was wonderful to watch. Combine this with top-tier editing, enjoyable, creative narration, some thoughtful philosophical monologue (and, admittedly, some "sadistically" hilarious reactions to the ocean XD), and you get a masterpiece that's without any doubt worth *every single subscriber* and like you've gotten because of it. I'm glad you replied to mr spamification's insult with sarcasm, implying that you couldn't care less, but it still felt important for me to say this. I have a phobia as well: cynophobia, the phobia of dogs. Due to a ton of exposure therpay and some other stuff I've mostly managed to overcome it by now, but it will never *truly* go away. When I was little, my reaction to even *seeing* a dog - no matter how small or how far away it was - was about the same as your reaction to being attacked by a Reaper for the first time, so I *geniunely* understood how you felt during your playthrough. And I have to say: it takes *MUCH* more courage than you think to express such feelings on the internet as openly as you did, where ignorant bullies like mr spamification are free to project their own hatred and frustrations onto you. Again, it's reassuring that you don't seem to care, but I know from personal experience how easily (and how discreetly) social pressure / bullying can hurt. It never hurts much in the moment: the bad words are simply stashed into your brain where they linger, seemingly harmless, slowly accumulating over time with each insult. And when something happens that destabilizes your psyche, *that's* when you remember every insult, critique and personal attack (like mr spamification's example here) you've ever heard, and they instantly start to outweigh all the positives. *This* is why I felt the need to say this. To give you something positive to focus on when the weight of all the critizism starts to feel too much to bear. In those moments, it's important to try to remember that for every comment like mr spamification's here, there are *at least* two (and almost certainly much, *much* more) encouraging, positive comments, left by people who geniunely enjoy watching your videos, enjoy listening to what you have to say and *geniunely* care about your wellbeing and happines. There's a REASON *you* have *tens of thousands* of subscribers, not mr spamification and all the rest like them. Always remember that, Captain Butch. :)
