...made the mittens after making the hat--even had enough yarn for a matching scarf. The set turned out gorgeous. I wish I could post it here. I must confess, though, that I did pull out both mittens so that I could complete each in single crochet rather than half double crochet. It was the thumb that was giving me difficulties. Attaching the thumb seemed so much easier on the single crochet base, at least for this perfectionist lefty! I also increased the cuffs to 25 stitches so Mom could uncuff her mittens and have extra cozy arms during cold, winter walks in Indiana.
    Thanks for the patterns! 💗💗💗

I just made these. My yarn was pretty thick, stuff I had around, and they turned out a little stiff. Once I wash them, I'm sure they'll soften up. I've done another easy mitten method, but this is much easier and I like the shape better. I think I did more stitches off the cuff on the first mitten, because the body turned out a little wider, but not that noticeable. And the thumbs were pretty wide so I did a couple decreases on them just to taper a little. I have new yarn coming tomorrow, and I look forward to making more of these! I've made almost the same type of hat as the beginner one here, in the past, and that's also a great hat and very warm. So thanks for the directions. I'm terrible at following regular patterns and counting stitches, but I am ok at winging it, so I like how this is done.

I like making mitts but I dislike doing the thumb !Usually when I do the thumb hole I go down 1 size crochet hook ...that’s just the way I do it and it works for me .

I saw on another video that they used both ends of a single skein to make their own bulky yarn. I tried it and once I got used to "seeing double" it was very easy to do. Hope it works for you too.

Are you pulling the stitch too tight? I would watch her doing the half double crochet again and make sure you are doing the stich correctly. When I first started I always forgot to loop over your hook first then go into the stitch below, wrap the yarn around your hook and pull through the stitch below. At this point you should have 3 loops around your hook. Then wrap your yarn again and pull through all three loops. It's hard to explain without showing you. That's why I suggest going back and looking at her video. Good luck with it
