One of the best reviews I've ever seen. I appreciate not having to skip through miles of video looking out the window showing detailed views of clouds and dark runways. Especially in First Class, a review is of interest to me when it details the lounges, amenities, seats, food, wine, and especially service. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comment
I like the little narrow corridor to your seat. It makes your suite feel cosy and 'tucked away'.
I've never seen so many aviation fuel experts in one place!
The refuelling was required because of: -
1). the taxi out and taxi back to the gate would likely have been closer to half an hour all told (rather than just 5 minutes)
2). then the Auxiliary Power Unit ('APU') would have been running for the hour you were at the gate (this would burn more fuel)
3). after the mechanical issue was fixed, the next taxy out to the runway would have burned further fuel, prior to take off
Add all these together, and the crew would likely have been looking at the loss of 3,000+ kg before finally getting off the ground in London.
Now, the heavier an aircraft is, the more fuel it burns, on any given route.
The fuel load adds to the total aircraft weight at take off.
Thus, you can see that: "... it costs fuel to carry fuel ...". Ie the more fuel that's loaded before take off, the more will be burnt en route from London to Tokyo.
Fuel is expensive (it can be 30% of all operating costs), so airlines operate profitably only if they minimise fuel loads (and, thus, fuel burns), as far as possible.
This means loading only as much fuel before push back as is absolutely necessary to ensure a safe flight.
At the flight briefing unit ('FBU'), where the crew first meets up about an hour and a half prior to departure, they are presented with a computer flight plan ('CFP'), which states a computed fuel load.
The CFP fuel load (referred to as: 'flight plan fuel') takes into account the weight of the expected payload (pax + cargo), the filed route, the winds aloft and weather en route, and the distance to the filed alternate airport (in case the weather at the intended destination deteriorates unexpectedly, and a diversion becomes necessary), and any holding which might be needed.
This CFP fuel load must, at minimum, be enough to allow the aircraft to: -
1). to operate from point of departure to destination, plus;
2). make an approach to landing, plus;
3). make a missed approach, and divert to the filed alternate, plus;
4). make an approach to landing at the alternate, plus a missed approach there, too, plus;
5). hold for 30 minutes at 1,500' AAL ('Above Aerodrome Elevation')
.... plus 5% of the total of all the above.
If the Captain of the flight, after discussing the matter with his crew, thinks - in his professional opinion - that more fuel should be loaded over and above flight plan fuel (ie the 'CFP fuel load'), then he has the discretion and authority to do so.
But once that fuel load is decided, it becomes - in the opinion of the Pilot in Command - the minimum fuel to be aboard before the aircraft pushes back from the gate. Once you've pushed back, there's no way to add more fuel before you land at the destination.
As you can see, this minimum fuel is carefully calculated, and is loaded to the nearest litre/kg, even in a huge aircraft like a 777-300ER.
But if you taxy out to the runway, then taxy back to the gate and hold at the gate for an hour, and you're facing another taxy back out to the runway, then you're still looking at being 3,000 kg BELOW what the Captain has decided is the absolute minimum fuel he considers safe for the flight.
The career goal of every professional pilot is simply to retire at the end of a 40 year career. This, in turn, is best achieved, by never ever running out of fuel prior to landing. :)
Besides which, as every pilot will tell you, the three most useless things in the world are: -
a). runway behind you
b). altitude above you
c). fuel in the bowser (instead of the aircraft)
We are incredibly cautious by nature, and just do not take any risks that can be avoided: you may have 400 pax, 21 other crew members (plus yourself!) aboard, and they all deserve your very best professional efforts, and the full benefit of your judgement and experience.
So, you take very very good care of them all.
Plus, one of the tried and true nostrums of aviation is this: there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are NO old bold pilots.
So, if you're 3,000 kg down on minimum fuel for the flight, you take no chances: you refuel before pushing back from the gate, again.
I'd have done exactly the same thing.
Are you a pilot? :-)
@@luxurytravelexpert Yes, I am.
xetalq Woah.
Thankyou, fantastic explanation.
I'd just assumed they put more fuel in some they fly faster to make up more time. Good to hear from an expert
He cannot be a pilot if he writes "taxy". He cannot be British because he used "alternate" instead of "alternative". @@luxurytravelexpert
The aircraft was refueled because, yeah, you taxied for 5min, but the aux engine, that produce electricity, consume more than a ton per hour, so the captain decided to refuel the plane, and I think he made the right choice.
Tripple 7 mans here and dat providing dat info yeh
Siar Miftari are you high?

Very nice video again. Thank you for posting. The Business class looked great. Im excited to try their first class on the same flight now.
Thank you! Cannot wait to report on their First Class as well (I flew JAL first before, but unfortunately before I started making flight clips). Safe travels!
Safe travels to you also.
Omg he's so sweet, he clearly loves his job!!
Omg I love your channel/videos so good and such good quality and detail!!
Thanks, for the ride along. Your videos are exceptional.
wow, thx for the very kind comment!
Wow it looked worth taking the flight just for the food. Looked like some of the best in any of your videos. Another fabulous video too so thanks. Keep it up!
You might be overstating things a bit. No matter how amused the bouche is, it is still just microwaved frozen dinners transferred from paper trays to some nice dinner service.
Dukky Drake Thanks captain "state the bleeding obvious" Bear in mind that many fine dining restaurants operate in the same way.
This video just made me realize which airline my dad used back in the late 80's early 90's on his trips to Taiwan. All that remains on the coasters he brought home was the JAL logo.
Great video! I'm trying JAL (NRT-SYD 77W J) for the first time next week so your brief taste of what to expect has been helpful.
Enjoy your flight! I like your flight clips as well :)
Thanks mate!
Very well filmed and detailed as always! All your videos are great keep it up ;)
Love all your travel airplane videos..you are so good at filming..subbed
Thanks a lot for your very kind comment!
The Concorde at 6:05 has a bit of an interesting history; G-BOAB, or ‘Alpha Bravo’, as she is nicknamed, never returned to service with the rest of BA’s Concorde fleet after the Air France disaster, and so was never modified with the protective measures that the other planes received. After landing at Heathrow in 2000, Alpha Bravo has been there ever since. The plane was going to be a gate guardian for T5, but that idea was scrapped when Emirates got permission to slap a big A380 model in the space the Concorde was going to have. After being periodically moved around Heathrow over the last few years, she’s recently received a well-deserved refurb, and is apparently being used as a cabin trainer for BA’s staff!
I like how you are so excited to take off then the plane turns around with a problem 😂😂
Thank you for the detailed review especially in their food and drinks menu as well as their seat function.
after seeing how much better a business class flight is I will never travel economy again. it's clearly worth the extra bucks on a ticket. WOW. thanks for a great video :)
thank you for your great comment :)
the Luxury Travel Expert how late was it in to tokyo
Must be nice to be rich...
Excellent trip report. The catering service on JAL has never disappointed me, it's just perfect.
In my opinion Japan Airines are better than most others , not talking about only Business class, just the whole experience.
The JAL man at Heathrow has made what they usually do at Japanese airports.
Great video - I am looking forward to your next one!
Thx. Yes, Japanese hospitality is great and amazing when you visit the country for the first time. My next flight trip report will the return flight on a British Airways B777-300ER (with spectacular Tokyo views after takeoff). I will post it next month (first need to publish some more hotel clips). Safe travels!
thx i've been waiting for a flight video from you
I try to post one flight clip for every 3 to 4 hotel clips
I have flown always with both ANA and JAL for the last 28 years and always found their standards very high and consistent. Much better than BA I must say, of which I am sure despite your soft spot for the latter, will surely agree citing this JAL experience!
It really reminded me of when i was a kid, i would look forward to their japanese in flight meal!
Real Luxury Channel Sir
I noted the tidiness of the business class cabin as you departed the plane. I have flown JAL and ANA flights in first and business, and have always been amazed at how tidy/clean the cabin was at the end of the trip, whereas on other airlines, it almost always looks as if a riot occurred in the business or first class cabins during the flight (with blankets, pillows, papers, etc., strewn everywhere). It's a testament to Japanese culture that I not only find fascinating, but also greatly admire.
I very enjoy your video :)
6:00 The legend
Nice to see a flight review again. :) I prefer them to the hotel reviews. Keep it up!
Very detail , thank.
Your videos are so cool!! I watch them because I can't afford 1st class and I literally drool over all of the stuff!!!!!!! Thank for sharing the experiences. Lucky you;)
thank you for your kind comment
Very enjoyable. Thanks!
there always needs to be extra fuel. taxiing for 5 minutes takes more fuel than flying for 5 minutes. the extra fuel allows the plane to use a holding pattern if there is a lot of traffic at the airport then.
great video as always, keep up the good work !
thank you
Very nice. It all looked top drawer including the staff uniforms. The food looked sensational with the octopus balls seemingly delicious. Yum! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, food was sensational indeed!
Wow! Japan Airlines looks awesome :)
Thank you for the video.
I am more than happy to be your “travel companion” any time!!!
Wonderful!
your videos are the best
outstanding view
Well, you said that it was only an indicator light? That is a broad term, probably used to not cause distress. However if an indicator popped up and they had to refuel afterwards, my guess is that the fuel pressure indicator light went off. Which is odd as this is a problem more inherent with the A380 not the B777 in general. They (JAL) would have to refuel because the fuel pressure indicator may be indicative of a fuel leak somewhere on board because as fuel is lost, the smaller amount of fuel is reaching the engines which triggers the warning, so they returned in order to prevent a catastrophe. As they looked to find it, they would refuel so that the fuel/pressure 'lost' can be brought back to par. They are also a Japanese airline which means that the rigidness in Japanese culture would demand this behavior. They like to do everything right, there is no half-assing in Japan. This is why Japanese transportation is known for being on time damn near 100% of the time. So when a light came on they followed protocol to the letter. Don't worry about it though, probably a faulty light from an older plane. No worries.

you look like 12 in your profile pic but ur brain like 30. thanks for some knowledge.
Lachlan Hall yes button see another reason look at my comment
The fault was most likely nothing to do with fuel. Aircraft do not have fuel pressure indication only fuel flow. The refuel would be as they used their taxi fuel up so needed more so as to not use their reserve fuel in flight/landing therefor landing under minimum arrival fuel with is against regulations.
Yeah that's right as newer planes will have more modern more safer flying technology. Im going on a 757 of TUI from Glasgow to Dalaman (Turkey) next month so it's an old plane but still old planes are nice too
The TUI 757 and 767 are to be replaced after 2020. With the 757 being replaced by 737 Max 10 just incase you guys didn't know
one of the best airlines i've flown on all classes.
Hate the BA Galleries at T3. Whenever I'm on a Club Europe flight, I head straight to the American Airlines lounge in T3. It's quieter,, larger, and has much better lighting :)
I've experienced same situation with Lufthansa flight a380-800 back in 2017 when is was traveling from San Francisco to Frankfurt.
We left the gate at departure time but due to some technical issues we got back to gate. Then the Crew told us that they are refueling the aircraft as they had wasted the fuel in taxiing to runway and again get back to gate. And after almost 2 hours of delay we took off. But I missed my connecting flight to Mumbai. But Lufthansa staff was very cooperative. They booked a different flight for me and I got back to my destination.
Love those shoes boy, classy indeed!
great video alsl
Fuel load is calculated including taxi, flight and in case diversion is required and holding pattern at HND.
At 0:07 what did you use to get the line going to different locations because it’s a good travel transition
This is a very nicely made Trip Report on JL44. I will be flying SS7 on the same route this coming Christmas, and I am looking forward to enjoying the ride :D
Enjoy your flight!
stoked about the concorde
Great video :)
thx
I wonder why the last flight attendant spoke Japanese to you lol
Anyways, thanks for the upload! Took me back to the memory when I last used Japan Airlines back in 2007 on B747-400 when the business class used to be JAL Shell Flat seat
It's such a luxury to fly in the 777-300ER even if you're flying coach!
What was that white line that was seen on the wing just before touchdown
great Video...the background instrumental music is awesome...could you specify the name of the track in epidemic sound...keep up the good work
Those Japanese meals looks very pleasing. Im a big fan of Japanese cuisine
Did they use two airbridges at heathrow or just one?
In the little world map you did after your opening logo you spelled London "Londen" and my OCD is going wild. LOL!
Londen is the Dutch name of the UK's capital. It's an error that slipped through the net :-)
Great video.
thx
The meals looks terrific, hopefully it tastes as good as it looks!
Yes, it was the best food I ever had while flying Business Class
The aircraft was refuled mostly for safety reasons. Had it been say in the European, American, or even in just Russia or China over land.
No fuling would be really necessary. The problem is over water. Delays or weather over water can really burn fuel. Not that they
really would have been in any danger. But, trips over water is a safety challenge all carriers face. And are governed under stricter rules than land travel.
and in case of Japan there’s also the chance of an earthquake closing the runway.
In 2011 lots of airplanes got diverted at the same time that surrounding airports also closed for being full. This caused many oversea planes to declare emergency for low fuel because they had to go through multiple waits and diverts.
A very impressive trip report. JAL offer a very superior product. The delay before departure may have been slightly irritating, but I would much rather be still on the ground when this happens. Are passengers served through the tiny space between the seat and the aisle? The food looked lovely, made my mouth water. I have flown on the 777 (not with JAL), and I found it to be a wonderful aircraft. Much quieter inside than I thought it would be. Thanks again, I really enjoyed that experience.
BUSINESS LOOKS MORE LIKE 1ST CLASS !! IMPRESSED !!
covid sucks -bring back pre2020 travel!!! thanks for the video.
Nice video love your editing. I watch you everyday
Thx!
+the Luxury Travel Expert OMG THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A RUclipsR WROTE SOMETHING TO ME
thx for writing to me ;)
No probs. I appreciate any comment :)
Cya :D
Japan air Line is lovely too.
it also could be the fact that they only took on enough fuel for the flight (common for most aircraft) and they wanted to make sure that they had enough in reserve just incase something where to happen and when they taxied out and back in they used up that reserve and needed to take it back in - from an aircraft mechanic
If you want to know something about how the amount of fuel is calculated, watch Mentour Pilot or Captain Joe. I guess the only reason they had to refuel after taxiing for 5 minutes was that they made their fuel calculations wrong and one of the pilots (fortunately) noticed it before they took off.
Hi i just followed you. May i ask what kind of machine you are using for record this video ? It's really good quality and i believed it is small machine for video record. I am planning to travel around the world this year and looking for all gear to get ready. So if you could let me know and also accessories to make this quality of video please kindly let me know.
Thank you in advance .
Canon SX710HS
I wonder if the pilots left the engines on or they just added extra to get you to Tokyo faster. Thats what happened to me during a delay.
Do you know that BA and JAL
are one world members
RE refuelling the plane: most airlines fill up just enough fuel to complete the trip, as well as some for holding, taxiing and going to an alternate if necessary. Although 5 mins doesn't sound like a lot, fuel is still being burnt and that takes precious time from other stages of the flight which could be disastrous if there is another malfunction or increase delay.
Perhaps also now that they are running late, they may need to fly at a higher, less economical speed to arrive as close to their slot (if they have one) as possible
thank you for your reply. I was wondering whether there was a fault with the indicator of the amount of fuel onboard, but your explanation makes more sense indeed.
Hi luxury travel expert, great video, congrats! please what´s the name of the first music? thanks
Ótimo!
Im guessing they needed to refuel because for a long flight like that they want as much fuel as possible...?
When I flew on JAL business class in 2017 I didn’t get that menu!! I would have chosen caviar. Anyways thanks for the cool video
YelloMonky I plan on going but this year it got messed up because of corona, how was your experience?
Tajemm it was amazing honestly! I think it’s my fault for not looking at the menu close enough. There might have been caviar and I missed it. But japan is still amazing! (I live here btw) and the corona virus isn’t spreading that much anymore. You shouldn’t go until the pandemic is like completely over though as if you go Rn most shops might be closed and you might get looks from the people here. (Most people don’t care but as in most areas, people are wary)
Also, convenience stores are great *But* if you want the best expierience to go to expensive stores that serve high-quality shit. But you can also find really good food (higher quality than convenience stores) at almost every store here in Japan. (minus most of the family restaurants) family owned restaurants are always great.
Do you get to keep the case(s) that store the toiletry items? Just curious.
Yes :-)
Hi mate. Love you're videos but just wondering if in the future you could show more of the seat and less of the landing and takeoff. Either way, I still love you're videos. Keep up the good work
Thank you for your kind comment! I guess you won't like my next clip about a British Airways 777-300ER from Tokyo to London, since it will feature a longer than usual takeoff sequence (I keep the camera rolling because of the spectacular Tokyo views after takeoff)
i assume they only replaced the fuel that was used to taxi out to the runway and back to the gate to make sure they had the correct weight they originally had and to ensure they had enough fuel for the journey as they would have used the same amount of fuel again taxiing back to the runway and that could have left the aircraft short of fuel
it is necessary to fuel the plane again coz a lot of fuel is consumed while taxing to the runway..Nd according to the regulations plane needs to be fueled fully before take off.
Look at that adorable kids from japan 10:43
fatur abi ya
Hello,
First of all, great and detailed video. The fault I'm unsure off, probably a sensor somewhere giving the pilots a takeoff config issue, not allowing them to takeoff.
The fuel - The 'APU' is a small generator in the tail off the aircraft which gives the aircraft electronic power when the engines are not running, by using fuel. As you need a certain amount of reserve fuel, a refuel was needed to ensure you had enough.
Happy flying!
Thank you for the comment! You sound like an aviation expert (and probably are one :))
Can you put like a screen or something between you and the person in the sky suite next to you?
yes, you can, there's a privacy screen
as soon as their planned reserves for safe flight came below minimums, they were bound to refuel; taxing is expensive (except for flybe since they taxi with one engine on their Q400s)
@20:50 did her seat crash on landing?
'This might be a problem for obese passengers' hahaha this cracked me up!!!
After the amount of food he ate on the flight I wonder if he had issues when leaving?
I found it quite rude actually
LOOOL savage AF
@@TheTSnell same just because you see an obese person doesn't always mean they have problems everywhere. Im really skinny yet I can feel myself getting a bit obese but I do work out a lot but for a while I just kept eating but yet I was still able to squeeze into tight places like them
Rude huh? What is rude is when some smelly slob plops their blubber into the seat next to me and spills half of it into my face.
Hey what is the name of this software in 0:05 sec. Its showing on google map London to Tokio.

Is it a windows based software or ios? and in order to making this type of intro which option should i use? can you give me a tutorial link?
Plus added fuel burn at the gate with APU running. Long haul flight like that every ounce counts

Do you feel that you lack storage space on that seat? ANA may have less "advanced" seats but they're less clusterphobic and provides more space "overall"

How many foods can you get if you travel JAL Business class??? Can you get those foods on board as many as you like??? I thought @each Business PAX can have ONLY 2x meal on Business class same like any other Airlines???
Other than the first meal, you can get can many meals as you like unlike other airlines.

What a great review and awesome work i Love it and keep up the good work! And what is the longest time you have been on a flight?
+Mamoun Zeriouh :o
My longest single flight so far was from Brisbane to Dubai (14 hours+)
+the Luxury Travel Expert je zou eens van Londen naar Sydney moeten vliegen; bijna 24 uur in de lucht!
+thefirsthalo3junk dat is wel met tussenstop. Reeds paar keer gedaan.
I flew JAL Business class recently with this seat layout and I was not impressed. The problem is that there is no "shelf" space beside you. I was fortunate that the seat next to me was unoccupied and so used it as shelf space. The 1-2-1 arrangement is way better.
Also, the headphones they issued were terrible. They need to use the Bose headphones that Cathay and American Airlines uses.
It is not refueling. It is a fuel redistribution by special pumps in scope weight balance on take on.
What a great variety of foods that u had. May I ask? Did you really have those all? If so then Thats a lot of food.. A perfectly spent airline ticket.. love it
I was very hungry, so yes, I ate all of it :-)
Aviation expert here. Refueling is necessary even when the plane engine was running for a short period because there are no gas stations in the sky.
Except for fighter jets, they can refuel in the sky
