    I flew in the US Navy. Learning aerodynamics and how planes fly/function really helped me understand how safe it is, particularly in the large, stable passenger aircraft we're in now. Pilots nowadays have so many thousands of hours flying, they are beyond experts. Trust me when I say that flying is FAR, far less dangerous than anything you do daily, particularly driving. Thank you for these vids and I hope this comment helps you enjoy these travels a little more!

      British Airways has always been about keeping a more traditional service as is shown in their first class description "Understated Elegance" It is not trying to be like the Middle Eastern and Far East carriers that have gaudy lacquered wood finishes and gold bathrooms with showers, If BA were striving for this or were claiming to be like this I would understand all the criticism and comparisons but IT IS NOT. As for this being compared to a business class product I would say that I also had a similar opinion until I flew in BA's first class on the A380 from LHR-ORD and the service and product was amazing. I would encourage you to fly BA first before main a judgement and if you still believe the service to be substandard then there are always the gaudy airlines waiting for you (that are often populated with want-to-be Instagram models who have saved for 7 years to take a picture in the emirates shower).

    It's ironic that someone whose professional output hinges on so much air travel is a nervous flyer, but I understand you because I am a nervous flyer myself, despite being exposed to frequent flying from a very early age. Great video's, I have zero flight anxiety , I have a private pilot license and I was air crew on navy P3 Orion's. I have hundreds of hours in the air and am totally comfortable in flight. I figure that the folks flying the plane want to go home at the end of the day just as much as I do, and if something happens that they can't handle, there is certainly nothing I can do about it, so why worry? My dream is a first class flight to Australia from the U.S. I was there a few times in the navy and want to share it with my wife, someday. Anyway, love the video's and I will keep living vicariously through them until it's my turn.

    I remember when BA and Qantas were going to merge about a decade ago. But instead BA merged with Iberian. Meanwhile, both BA and Iberian are now circling the drain, and Qantas is doing fantastic, especially with its new 787 route connecting Australia to the UK direct for the first time. It's sad to see what has become of BA.

@@kaismeaton7711 there's nothing understated or elegant about it, really. BA has gained an appalling reputation for cost cutting and poor service. The definitive ratings for this kind of thing, Skytrax, only rates BA's first class as 15th best in the industry.

    • @kaismeaton7711
      @kaismeaton7711 5 лет назад

      @@zeddeka Well I would beg to differ, As someone who has had many encounters with the BA first service I would say that it is very elegant and yes it is rated 15th best in the industry but thats because like I said previously, its competitors are the likes of emirates who offer things such as showers, which in my opinion is terribly gaudy and awfully nouveau riche. I just think nothing can beat, after a long holiday in a foreign country, boarding a BA flight with impeccable service ( Which it always is in the Club World and First cabins, I can't speak for traveller or traveller plus) and getting that feeling that you are going home. without all the pomp and circumstance after all I'm not being coronated. which I don't get with other airlines such as emirates who's cabins are covered in varnished wood and 'gold' finishes in my opinion it just doesn't feel as cozy or familiar, I actually find it rather cold and cluttered. I guess it just comes down to personal preference and the feeling I get while flying home with BA (Probably due to it being a national flag carrier) is something I have seldom found with other airlines. Yes it may not be the best in the industry but it is my favourite.

    The closest I’ve gotten to first class was flying standby with my husband, coming back to Texas from Hawaii on a 747 American Airlines. We were the last ones called and to our surprise, there were no more coach seats left so they put us in first class. Of course all we got were bigger seats and a hot wash cloth. No other perks of first class. This was in 1982 so first class didn’t look like these you are showing. No petitions or beds. Just large reclining seats and lots of leg room. Quieter too than coach.

      On my first flight the trip was pretty bumpy but on my second our plane caught fire just as we were about to board. On my third flight our landing was very bumpy and stuff was flying around in the cabin. I honestly thought we would not be able to come to a full stop. I have a BIG fear of flying and am now at the point where I refuse to fly anymore. I worked in the offices of an airline company in my city and I can’t tell you how many times my manager drew me little aerodynamic sketches about the safety of flying but the fear persists. I find it interesting that you have a fear of flying. I’ve been an aviation enthusiast all my life, thanks to my late grandfather and father (who has been taking me to airshows since 2 months old). There’s not a lot he couldn’t tell you, and likewise myself, about the vintage aircraft scene. And yet curiously I’m am not great at flying! I’m incredibly anxious and nauseous leading up to a flight, walking through the terminal, though I’m relatively fine onboard.
    I film take offs and landings to help focus my mind, like you, but I find it interesting that for someone who’s life has revolved around aviation, I’m not that great flying! I wonder if it’s excitement channeling itself as nausea...
    Great work nonetheless - really enjoy your channel.

A senior BA spokes man recently appeared on a documentary about BA (I believe it was on the BBC) and stated that when redesigning the cabins they discussed offering features such as showers but found that it was not what their customers were looking for (people who fly BA first class are usually more traditional) but also did it not fit in with the companies image.

    I must say that you do not have a "fear" of flying.....rather....you have an "anxiety" about flying...which is common amongst a section of people who fly including myself😊
    People with a fear of flying won't even fly!!... leave alone making such a good and informative video about their journey...such as yours😊
    I guess the only remedy for your anxiety over flying is to fly even more !😊

    The food on that journey is the plainest and least appetising I've seen on these youtube travel videos. Its hardly surprising given how British management's idea of 'efficiency' is based around making cuts and making more profit regardless of impact on service.

    Wow. Amazing BA lounge. If one is not careful they may go overboard with the food and drinks prior to boarding. Beautiful Airbus. I agree with your observations about BA's first class looking like a business class (it's nice but on the plain side). Not as luxurious as Emirates or Lufthansa. Nice that the airport has a long runway. Nice aerial views from Johannesburg. Cool Ottoman and IFE (responds well to finger presses and has a good selection). The meals were nice. Disappointed BA eliminated appetizers considering you pay quite a bit of money for first class. Pretty nice landing. Great job.

    Say what you will about BA's serrvice and premium feel, but I love the style of that first class cabin. It isn't grand and glitzy like the competition and it doesn't try to be; rather it's very space-age, futuristic. Like a Gattaca Chic.

    Poor BA, having spent millions upon millions of vast profits in the late 80s/early 90s on developing the worlds first flat beds in First and then in Club World, the little gnome from Dublin has managed to bring the company down to a mediocre carrier. Faced with "don't need to make a profit" middle east carriers and their glitzy gold encrusted bedrooms/ apartments ( I hate the vulgarity), BA is struggling to keep it's head up with the (so called) competition.
    With demoralised crew on separate contracts, so many moves afoot to emulate low cost carriers, customers no longer see any point in flying BA. However, due to low fares, flights are full and ironically profits sky high. This will not last if the profits aren't fed back into what the customers are given and how they are treated.

      richl. Emarites has made a profit for the last 30 years. So has Singapore Airlines. BA has lost the plot, I'm a frequent traveler and so are most of my friends, and we all avoid BA like the plague.

      I don't really know too much about their financial state but they ought to try harder.I flew with them once and that short haul.You get a choice of drinks,even if they weren't too keen on giving alcohol,and a choice of a packet of crisps or biscuits.I thought that the whole thing was a bit like a no frills airline.The latest plan is to sell sandwiches and other snack items from Marks and Spencer at a mark up.I thought that the attendants were a bit brusque too,i asked for a gin and tonic and the miniature gin was literally thrown at me.

    • @karlp8484

      Amy Baker. Forget about my opinion, I've polled other flight report channel owners and they all put BA right down their lists. And those guys do all the traveling, so they know who's good and bad. I live in Asia - Pacific and no one in my region in their right mind ever flies BA.

    • @Springbok295

      I remember when BA was nicknamed Bloody Awful back in the 70s and early 80s. The once proud British carrier has once again slumped back into the "Bloody Awful" malaise. Gulf carriers have the state and oil revenue to spend on their airlines. I hope BA can turn it around. I have no doubt that the A380 will be phased out sooner rather than later for BA. A four engine airliner is just too costly to operate in this current airline market.

    • @karlp8484
      @karlp8484 7 лет назад +1

      Springbok295. The kangaroo route for BA to Australia is over. The only people who fly BA now to my region are clueless Brits who don't know any better. Because they don't come from here. They just come from there.

    maybe its just me, but everything looked very mediocre. Compared to the better middle eastern and asian airlines, BA first class looks like what one would get in business class with them. I have heard that BA has really started nickel and diming their customers,but I hadn't realized that was also true of first class. Looks very disappointing. Would be interested to know what that ticket cost
