Hi Keenan I tried out your site few months ago and I didn't see the other 3 parts on your site. I also didnt see the other part of the pancake guard and a few others you said had parts on your site. I looked everywhere but nothing.
John Kim if you want I can send you specific links to all the videos and where to find them
Keenan, you are a very good teacher... your demonstrations along with your explanations are at a perfect pace & easily understood. Thank you for your videos. I'm a white belt & your vid posts have been very helpful along the way...this particular video is one of my favorites; I consistently revisit before & after classes to refresh my thoughts & hopefully speed up the instinctual responses when rolling. I am making progress... Cheers!
Thanks alot for this Keenan!!!
Brilliant.
I think the biggest problem I have with my guard is it doesn't appear to exist.
Your gym must stay really cool with how much wind is in it.
1 - Spider Guard
2- Lasso Guard
3- De La Riva Guard
4- Reverse De La Riva
5- Knee Shield Half
6-Deep Half
Thats 6 🤔
1.0 Open Guard
5.1 Quarter guard
The Idea here is to recover to a previous layer of guard before you opponent transitions you to the next defensive layer! details in part 2! thanks for watching!
+Keenan Cornelius Great video Keenan, especially for us noobies.
+Keenan Cornelius Are the rest on the member's only site already?
Part 2?
No its not.
Keenan I have attended you seminars ...... I believe you're the "GOAT". Keep up the good work.
He's a really good teacher
fantastic instructor-such a clear exposition of defensive strategy
So it sounds like the camera man is using the rabbit guard on the microphone. Keenan, could you explain how to use this guard if we're attacked by boom mics on the street?
Great analogy of breaking down distance in a guard with distance in a fight stance💡
Disengaged, Spider, Lasso, DLR, RDLR, Knee Shield, Deep 1/2, 1/4 .
keenan is so next level
damn this guy seems chill. I salute
This video is perfect and well broken down.
I've been struggling with people who have a good knee/leg drags and I was trying to get my knee drag better to beat them but I was wrong!!! Nowadays, I'm working on my spider guard, lasso, squid, collar and the modifications.. opponents seem to regret attempting the drag .. or even placing their hands on my knees 😁 Ur game plan is great - Thanks for the vids
You're awesome Professor!
Thanks from France !
Wow that is a brilliant breakdown. Thanks Keen Corn!
is someone chewing on the mic?
Sounds like its in a wind tunnel
EXCELENT transitions
Great video. I really need to add layers to my open guard...
Windy dojo.
Thank you! how bout the nogi version?
Very helpful and well explained. Thanks!
Excellent conception!
Spider Guard > Lasso Guard > De La Riva > Reverse De La Riva > Knee Shield > Quarter Guard > Deep Half
Great Tutorial! 👊
Great to see these all together! Thanks.
thanks for the great explanation.
thank you for the explanation!
SICK!! i need to start drilling this!
OSS
The order in case anyone forgot (which I did) is spider gaurd then to lasso gaurd to de la Riva then reverse de la Riva then to knee shield to 1/4 gaurd then 1/2 gaurd to deep path. You're welcome my fellow grapples 😌🕺🏿
thx you master cornflakes.
Onion guard.
After 7 minutes trying to pass you're crying
Great video thanks for sharing
Another awesome video brother
Alec Baulding plug for Team Alliance. #Props
I practice Semen Retention for superb guard retention
brilliant.
Excellent
Thanks Keenan, this video is gold for me. I hope you show a good solid, go to sweep, for all of those layers. =)))
Definitely a cool training concept in terms of distance management and transitioning. However don't quite see the logic in playing spider guard first when the opponent is standing. The spider guard is inherently much weaker when your opp is standing. i would probably set up the single sleeve to collar sleave, if the opponent goes to knees, then play spider / lasso. if the opponent puts one leg forward, go DLR, or tries to pass DLR, go to reverse de la riva or even better to go X. then transition from x to the back since I don't want to play deep half guard. If the opp falls on his butt from de la riva, then start boloing.
Very good concepts here! So as these are 8 layers of defense (from better to worst), do you mean that our task is to transition or to get back to the previous "level of guard" if we are on offense (ex: from lasso going back to spider? or rather trying to hit a sweep from each level of guard if not gettting a submission)?
Thank you so much 🔝🔝🔝
thankss
mind blown .....
Such a classic video. Is there an equivalent drill for no gi?
Wow i'm getting chilly just hearing that breeze. :S

Keenan monstro
Wheres part 2, 3 and 4?
Shout out Alec Baulding haha Woot!
what about the birimbolo after layer 8? That switch is a perfect set up to it.
Principle noted:
If you push from guard you are loosing.
If you pull from guard you are winning.
f'n awesome!!
Where is part 2?
Where would inverted guard come into the rotation?
잘봤습니다.
muito bom
At what point, and under what circumstances would you invert? I've usually seen it from reverse dela...
Hi Keenan i've came back to this after a year ago of watching , i was wondering where single leg x fits into the layer system as its quite an offensive guard?
What’s the order for no
Gi, and how/when would closed
Guard for into this?
great video for me coz muh guard sucks. :) thanks KC
Do you do seminars by any chance and if so is there a way to keep track on when and where?
2:31 Can't he grab your feet or ankles and throw your legs to the side before you can get sleeve grips?
Hey Keenan, what happens if your opponent goes around while you have your hands under your knees? Do you post a leg and try to follow him around? Or do you go to something like reverse guard?
Sit up guard from De la Riva? I like sit up guard :D
Can you pls take out that wind sound?
Where would butterfly guard fit into all this?
Naked Mongoose possibly from knee shield
Which layer is worm guard?
Why is the full guard left out?
I can't understand the name when he talks about the 5'7 guy who plays an effective spider.
Alec baulding
Why do you write there is 3 more videos of this concept, when there is not on keenanonline.com?? false advertising!! Btw i am a member on your website.
Quicksandfan hey man if you are having trouble finding the other videos send a message on the site and they will send you the right links

Keenan Cornelius Guard retention
Does the same apply to NoGi?
you mentioned the guy who is short and plays spider guard but i could not catch his name, can you write it here?
+Magomed Kurbaitaev Alec baulding
+Keenan Cornelius Thanks a bunch!
Why does it sound like there is a tornado blowing on the mic?
great video! too bad the sound is messed up...
?
How is there wind sound inside?
the air con on the microphone nearly makes this unwatchable, lucky it starts to pass around the 2 min mark
part 2? :)
what about butterly?
Why is it windy.
im a little confused , im a awhite belt and been training a few months , but surely the best place to be is your opponent in your closed guard ? and not them stood away from you? can you tag me in the reply so I see it many thanks
That's what I thought when I was a white belt too. After a while I found people get too good at opening your closed guard so started playing a lot more open guard and now I only use closed guard if I'm forced to
The concept of guard retention only applies to open guard and the four points of contact. In closed guard if you play it right then it should never get passed. But if you watch Keenans sparring videos, you will notice not a single opponent gets him in closed guard. High level players wont even let you get too that point. In this video the position Keenan starts from is a position you might fall into in a failed guard pull attempt. After you learn to establish these different types of guard, you will start to learn sweeps from these guards that you can use to reverse position and come on top. My take downs suck, so I've been devoting my time to learning sweeps.
Maybe it's because I'm dumb but what are the names of the 8 layers. All I got was:
1. No Contact
2. Spider
3. Lasso
4. De La Riva
5. Reverse De La Riva
6. Knee Shield
7. Quarter
8. ??
And didn't you say knee shield is part of reverse de la riva so what are 7 and 8 if that is the case??
+NateTheItalianStallion deep half guard is the 8th and last layer
Matheus Araújo But isn't that a progression? From what I notice the list goes 1 to 2 to 3 by losing position to losing position to losing position. It would be weird for it to have that trend to suddenly gaining a position. Like I'd rather be in deep half guard than quarter guard
You're right. Let Keenan answer that question
+NateTheItalianStallion I think that I'd rather have a lasso guard than a spider guard, a dela Riva than a lasso. And a knee shield than a reverse dela Riva. But I'm only a blue belt
Matheus Araújo Well he is like going best to worst positions in terms of control I believe.
It looks like they're inside, but it sounds like they're outside. Hmmmm :)
where do you teach out keenan?
+danny taki ATOS San Diego, same place as Andre Galvao :)
At which layer do you enter the worm and mantis guards?
mantis from de la riva and worm guard from lasso
+Geoffry Tran Love the mantis guard.
i really need to save up some cash and head down to HQ the best jiu jitsu gym on planet earth
Bjj beast
Please record the sound better :)
It sounds like your on a windy beach.
Question why are yoou wearing karaty gis but wrestling? thanks
The gi is a part of grappling that lets the practitioners have more positions open to them with the use of the gi. There are many viewpoints about the effectiveness of the gi with grappling but from what I concluded it is that it allows more positions for practitioners and it slows the game down due to the friction and extra grips. This forces a practitioner to rely more on positioning and technique as opposed to just explosiveness and slipping out. That is not to say that not wearing a gi does not have its advantages. My comment is simply an observation I made from training both with and without the gi and does not represent the ideology of the grappling community as a whole.
