Reminder: If you disagree with me, that's totally cool. This video was me sharing *my* perspective on the show, and I'm very aware of how subjective my opinions are. Because they're opinions.
But to be clear on one point: I think Matthew Waterson's performance as Magneto is fantastic. Really, everyone here is giving a great performance.

    >The entire Madelyne Pryor storyline feels like a half-season's worth of material, burned through in 3 episodes.
To be fair....that's what Claremont said when he wrote that story in the comics back in the 80s. To quote him on this
"The original Madelyne storyline was that, at its simplest level, she was that one in a million shot that just happened to look like Jean Grey [a.k.a. the first Phoenix]! And the relationship was summed up by the moment when Scott says: "Are you Jean?" And she punches him! That was in Uncanny X-Men #174. Because her whole desire was to be deeply loved for herself not to be loved as the evocation of her boyfriend's dead romantic lover and sweetheart.
I mean, it's a classical theme. You can go back to a whole host of 1930s films, 1940s, Hitchcock films-but it all got invalidated by the resurrection of Jean Grey in X-Factor #1. The original plotline was that Scott marries Madelyne, they have their child, they go off to Alaska, he goes to work for his grandparents, he retires from the X-Men. He's a reserve member. He's available for emergencies. He comes back on special occasions, for special fights, but he has a life. He has grown up. He has grown out of the monastery; he is in the real world now. He has a child. He has maybe more than one child. It's a metaphor for us all. We all grow up. We all move on.
Scott was going to move on. Jean was dead get on with your life. And it was close to a happy ending. They lived happily ever after, and it was to create the impression that maybe if you came back in ten years, other X-Men would have grown up and out, too. Would Kitty stay with the team forever? Would Nightcrawler? Would any of them? Because that way we could evolve them into new directions, we could bring in new characters. There would be an ongoing sense of renewal, and growth and change in a positive sense.
Then, unfortunately, Jean was resurrected, Scott dumps his wife and kid and goes back to the old girlfriend. So it not only destroys Scott's character as a hero and as a decent human being it creates an untenable structural situation: what do we do with Madelyne and the kid? ... So ultimately the resolution was: turn her into the Goblin Queen and kill her off."

I also disagree on Genosha. Giving it time is exactly what would STRIP the weight it had. People already wouldn't shut up about the potential of the Mutant Massacre coming along with endlessly talking about the idea of Cassandra Nova being the villain. Had it gotten multiple episodes before the attack, you already PREPARED for it to happen. LITERALLY NO ONE was prepared for how it happened or how soon and the hammer drop it very effective. Plus you can spend the time with people emotionally dealing with the reality of the situation instead of the fantasy of what might happen (as people normally expect it around 2-3 episodes before the finale).
While I want LONGER episodes, I don't necessarily want MORE. I just want more time in the episodes to do more and still tell the story the way they did. It was already effective, but I want the fleshing out to be contained in the episodes themselves instead of more episodes later.

@@ShinobiPhoenix-YT0 See, this one I'm a little more adamant about. Genosha-- within this narrative-- is only barely mentioned before we're suddenly there, experiencing it and what it means to mutant kind. A whole new government has been established, roles are shifting and being created. It feels like a grandiose change, but the weight of it is lessened when the impact finally hits because all we got was half an episode to learn about it.
I think it still works, mind you. ALL of it still works, to one degree or another. Just, with Genosha specifically, it genuinely believe it could've benefited from more time. Hell, like ya said, maybe if the episode was longer, and we'd gotten more time to experience it in a single episode, that would've made up the difference.

@@KaiserNeko This is still a continuation of the original story, in 97 we got enough of the tidbits in episodes 1 and 2 to grasp the outer world building without it hitting you over the head visually.
Especially E2 with Magneto of all people having ABSOLUTE confidence in rescuing the Morlocks and spending resources to relocate them to Genosha. That being a place Not-Yet-Max believes to be safe and happy vs how it was in the previous seasons, which Magneto brings up outright regarding how Charles and the X-Men didn't use their resources to SOCIALLY help other Mutants. The Morlocks in the same episode are watching Magneto's Trial on the ship out in the open safe instead of hiding. That alone speaks volumes to the changes in the world.
One of Beau's "homework" assignments was to go back to the episodes Sanctuary 1 and 2 which is literally Magneto going to Genosha to bring the mutant slaves to be home with him. The response being kill Magneto for taking "our property". This same Magneto is now confident enough in the changes to Genosha to support and fund relocation to it. That's enough worldbuilding for me.
It's subtle but impactful, just like the humans being comfortable using Sentinel tech on themselves as early as the first 10 minutes of Episode 1 (which was my first real clue the villain was Bastion along with the Sentinels having been added to the end of the Intro). They added enough clues throughout the episodes of many things outside of the contained episodes. We all expected to go to Genosha, but we also expected to be the vehicle leading to the finale, not Game of Thrones us in the middle. I think they did enough with the time they were forced to deal with, though getting no-break hour episodes instead of a max of 40 minutes would have been nice.

I was really hoping you guys would talk about _X-Men '97._ I actually wasn't even a fan of the original _X-Men_ cartoon back in the '90s, despite being a total 16 year-old comic book nerd when it premiered... something about the animation and the general overly-kiddified censorship of '90s Marvel cartoons just turned me off and I couldn't get past the 1st Season. But _this_ show takes everything that the original show _should_ have been and just _transcends_ it, even taking the original's art style that I couldn't stomach and _my God did they managed to make it work._ This show is actually better than the current comic books (but the X-Men completely abandoning Xavier's dream and becoming Immortal Fascist Mutant Supremacist Utopians is hard _not_ to surpass. The X-Men should be oppressed minorities who strive to fight for a world that hates and fears them, _not_ facing eternal genocide _all the damn time._ They ruined the X-Men by making everything so damn bleak and turning all of general humanity into horrible scumbags, when Claremont was always careful to show normal humans in any crowd standing up for mutants against people attacking them. Nowadays its' _only_ attackers, and the stories have lost a huge amount of nuance and gone downhill because of it.

X-Men '97 really does feel like a near-perfect reboot, in that it carries over a lot of the classic, iconic visuals and concepts, while modernizing it in a nuanced and constructive way. It heavily improves on the visuals, and ages up the content, written for a more general audience instead of just children. Which is GOOD, because adults are going to be the ones remembering this show, these designs, these versions of the characters. Not allowing the writing to reflect that audience would've been a terrible mistake.
It also allows for more mature and nuanced stories about bigotry, identity, revolutionary action. It doesn't have to shy away from the actual consequences of persecution, nor violence inherent in both a corrupt system, and defiance against said system.
I would've talk about that more in more in my review, but I didn't want to get too heavy. Still trying to find my footing with that.

What I would really like is either significantly extended episodes, or maybe a web-series that "fills" in the gaps; give us the time to grow with Genosha or slow down at some points. It was great, no doubt- but some points of inflection, moments to contemplate, would be good as well.

I re-watched the original series right before the new series started, and it took me a few episodes to get used to the "aged" voices of Wolverine and Rogue. As soon as I heard Rogue's voice, I knew we probably wouldn't be getting those high-pitched "Rogue screams" in this new series.

His potrayal in the MCU made him one of my favorite Superheroes and how hes just seen as a stooge for the Government feels so out of character when they had a an interesting idea with him having a Lead on Trask.
It feels more like a US Agent potrayal rather than Cap would really act, especially with heroes hes worked with before in this universe with Wolverine and Captain America having history in this universe

I'm really hoping for something. They don't fall into the repetition trap. They need to shine a few characters on, send them out and rotate in new blood. Character dynamics and interpersonal interactions need to happen and then bring back the exited characters and send out the rotation characters after a bit. Roberto needs to go off and get people cheering for his powerset. He clobbered Bastion at the end and it was a freaking cutaway scene. Ouch! If hindsight was 20/20 they could have had done something there.

Honestly pretty on point with your review, I do hope that season 2 has either more episodes than this season to world build a little bit or at the very least slow the pace down slightly so we can get invested in what's going on. Like the Genosha attack would've felt more impactful if we got to see it long enough as a paradise for mutants that it's truly a safe haven that people made their home. It felt more like a vacation destination for mutants rather than a home with the pacing.

I love Wolverine. Ever since I was a little kid he was my favorite. And he works BEST as a support character. I love that he's not the main focus in this show.
I was skeptical about the old rogue VA returning at first, she just sounds way different from the 90s (understandably). But that delivery at the end of episode 5 brought me to tears. And after that I was 100% on board.
This show's only real flaw, to me, is that it's too fast; there's SO much in each episode. If they'd just added like 3-5 minutes to each episode there would have been more space to breath between big moments.
But goddamn, I LOVE this series so damn much. Every episode had me grinning like a kid on Saturday mornings.

I have been saying since the death of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes that where the MCU was doing everything right in live action, DC was the only one doing animation right. This is finally the place where Marvel turns the corner. The real question is - will Disney realize they have a winner and invest in Spider-Man, Avengers, and other Marvel properties on the colorful screen? We all saw those many cameos especially towards the finale. They could put together a "97verse" and no one would mind.

The Cameo's though are hit or miss, especially with Mary Jane not because Finally, FINALLY Spidey actually won, but because we NEED to now know how he won. Seriously why did you have to remind me of episode 5. I just got over that heart breaking ending 😭
Although I agree with you hands down it was the best episode of series that had 10 amazing episodes.
I was so glad they gave both Storm and Cyclops the respect that the films never once gave them. That desert scene with her turning the sand to glass still gives me chills. Cyclops arc with him blaming himself for what he viewed as abandoning his son even though in reality he was saving his life was heartbreaking to watch but had a very satisfying ending.
Seriously this show is worth the Disney+ subscription alone.

Easily one of the best new shows I've watched this year (with Fallout and Frieren making my top three so far). Absolutely loved this season, especially after spending the past few month binging the original animated series and many of the Fox movies to prep for D&W. My biggest hope for next year though is that they will be able to pace their narratives better. While individually, many episodes don't feel rushed, many of the ideas could have been expanded upon more with many singular episodes having enough content to warrant multiple parts. I doubt we will get more than 10 episodes for next season because streaming has made 6-10 episode seasons the norm but what wouldn't do for a 20+ episode season for this series. Sure it would mean less awesome anime inspired fight scenes, but with this level of writing, I would actually be okay with that. This show is peak X-Men, and I want to spend more time with these characters and their complicated world and even more complicated relationships.

But damn did that first episode kick my slumbering mind's ass. I'd forgotten what it was like to genuinely look forward to a Marvel project. And it was to see the world reminded of why the X-Men matter. Despite being set in the 90's, the show's message and themes are more important now than they've ever been.

Loved the show for the most part, though I definitely have to disagree with you on Wolverine. The way the show handled his characters was one of the biggest letdowns for me and held the show back a bit. He wasn't in the last four X-men movies, not in either Deadpool movie (since they both featured some X-men characters) outside of a couple mentions, and he wasn't in New Mutants. So while he did have his own films in the very underrated The Wolverine and the amazing Logan, those were 2013 and 2017, respectively. Of course we'll have Deadpool 3 coming up, but that will still put him having only been in 3 of the 10 movies released in the last 15 years.
The bigger issue for me, though, is his character in general. You touched on it with Cyclops -- how they did a good job of making his character in X-men 97 more inline with his comic character rather than the wet noodle he was in the original cartoon. That's where they let Wolverine down -- Wolverine in the original cartoon is often played off almost like an angsty teenager and it never really touched on the more interesting side of his character. Unfortunately, that's still the Wolverine we got in '97. It's absolutely fine for him to be a background character in this series' plot, but he needed the same treatment the rest of the cast got to bring him more in line with his comic book counterpart -- and not doing that felt like it was done more in spite of the character than a shifting of focus.
    Enjoyed the review, though!
