The main heavy metal hill I'm willing to die on is that power metal is actually a great genre that gets ragged on because it's people having fun for a change, instead of pretending they're the most hardcore people on the planet 24/7. Which is way more lame. It also was born out of great bands like Dio and Iron Maiden, so those are other reasons why I love it as a subgenre. Not to mention it's somewhere I can hear my shared love for fantasy and mythology in music.

Great video, the metal bill I’m willing to die on is that great metal is still being made. I’ve met some that have said good music stopped being made when they graduated high school. I think metal is getting better as time goes on. With recording becoming more accessible, so much great music is being made. And also my other hill im willing to die on, bring back the garage demos.

I have no problems with gimmicks as long as they're backed up by great playing and songs. KISS was probably the ultimate gimmick band, but they had great songs and put on killer live shows. I'm of two minds when it comes to live albums. I understand you are missing out on something. However, I grew up on some classic live albums. Unleashed in the East by Judas Priest, Made in Japan by Deep Purple, KISS Alive, Strangers in the Night by UFO, Tokyo Tapes by Scorpions, Live After Death by Iron Maiden, etc. Maybe I'm more opposed to the over saturation of live albums, like releasing them after every tour.
I'll be dying on a fair few of those hills also brother. While I 90% agree on live albums however, I have to mention a couple of anomalies. Child in Time and Fear of the Dark. Those live recordings just seem to buck the trend and I actually prefer live to the studio versions. Also, could Alice in Chains unplugged be considered live? A hill that I will die on is that I think the Black Album deserves more respect and credit than it's given by some of the old guard. Black Album was a gateway to metal for a lot of people, myself included.
I agree, Black Album isn't even a bad metal album. It's just not thrash, which is the main reason everyone rags on it. But as a heavy metal album, it rules. It was a gateway album for me too.

Regarding live recordings: exceptions are the live performance that actually add something or otherwise are better than the studio version in some way. However, in the entire history of rock and metal you can count these exceptions on the fingers of one hand of a chainsaw operator. An example is Made in Japan by Deep Purple.
I agree with almost all your points, except the one about live albums, obviously it's better to have the live image but many times I just like to listen to live albums, for example Sabaton (my favorite band) have two specific live albums that I love to watch but to listen to as well, the Swedish Empire Tour Live at Woodstock and the Great TourLive at Prague in particular. Also, sometimes I like their live performances better than the original performances of some tracks, as in the case of these two albums I mentioned.
I maintain that 'gatekeeping' is a good thing. If a band isn't metal, don't insist that it is. You're clearly wrong about live albums. You aren't much of a black metal fan if you can't appreciate Mayhem - Live In Leipzig.

100% that young bands with energy and something to prove have to move on and do new things after 3-4 albums. We all need to love the early music and hopefully fall in love with the new stuff.
There are live albums that do sound better than studio albums from bands like Pink Floyd, Saxon, Motörhead, Pantera, Children of Bodom, etc.. it all depends on how they produce it.

In regards to "live recorded albums" . They used to serve a better purpose 20 years ago, before YT, Before you could see your fav underground band live. Hearing a live grind CD was like a diamond in the rough. Also, if you live no where near a city where bands come to....having a live CD is close as you ever come to hearing your fav underground metal/grind band play live.
ive been to hellfest in french this weekend and i saw metallica there, i must say i was really disapointed, they did some really great songs but it isnt the metallica that they used to be, like at the end of the show he did a 10 min speech and like everybody just walked away from the stage
i think part of that is some of the more expiremental stuff they did. early stuff being punk adjacent. when they started making smooth jazz and country songs, i think that turns off a lot of metal heads. metal purists should start at violence and ignore the earlier works. though you should at some point do scum dogs for the gwar lore and maybe ragnarok.
For most of these I have a "to each their own" point of view, though with live recorded albums I think I can give you one exception when a live-album is worth the purchase and as an example I will give the one live album that I own on purpose (as in, not a part of some deluxe edition): Septicflesh's Infernus Sinfonica MMXIX. What would make this album worth owning? It is a unique live-performance of the band with a full orchestra and choir, giving the whole experience a very unique and special feel. And that's the only time I will say yes to a live album. When it does something actually extraordinary and something that isn't your typical live show. As for Hills I'm willing to die on: - You don't have to like the headliner on a festival, for them to deserve their spot on the stage. Recently with Graspop Metal Meeting, they had Electric Callboy as an early evening headliner (they weren't even the main one) and people were complaining about how it doesn't belong there and, with some irony argueing that Five Finger Death Punch (which played later and in a more official headliner capacity) definitely did, despite both bands having both large fanbases in the metal community as well as strong detractors... Both are divisive bands but the reason why they are where they are is clear, they draw crowds and if you don't like it, go to a different stage, there is plenty of other bands to see and discover, playing at the same time. - You don't have to agree with everything a band says or does, to still be able to enjoy their music (this goes with just about any artist or celeb): a lot of people are dickheads who shouldn't be left alone with access to social media, why do you expect artists to be different? I understand if this is a dealbreaker for some people, for me it depends on the artist and what has been set but I refuse to dig through their whole history to uncover potentially problematic ideas or quotes before starting to listen to them. Who has the time? - You don't have to be a fan of every genre of metal to be a metalhead but if your taste in metal is limited to a single band (or just a handful), you are a fan of said band (and good for you, enjoy it to its fullest) but not really a metal fan. - You don't have to like the old, classic bands in order to be a "true" metalhead. Even if all the bands you listen to started between 2010 - 2020 (or maybe even later), if you listen to a good portion of metal music, you can be considered a metalhead. It is a flex I've seen some people make, the "oh how can you not like this 'famous '80's band'"... Easy, not my thing (though I do enjoy some Black Sabbath, Scorpions and Iron Maiden from time to time, but my taste is mostly 2000's and onwards...
If I disagree of agree with your points Breakdowns: I understand breakdowns for filler, but some breakdowns are the highlight of the song, a slow chuggy section and really good rhythms. Live album: Some are good, like unplugged albums are really good. But I'd rather a studio version Collaboration: outside of Metallica it's pretty good, Anthrax & Public enemy, Korn & Ice Cube, Igorr and CorpseGrinder, Rhapsody & Christopher Lee. Some are fantastic Gimmicks: Some cool, but some suck, like Ice Nine Kills with all the slasher type stuff. Kinda cringe stuff for nightmare before Christmas moms. But some are classics, like Spinal Tap, Gwar, Twilight Force, cool stuff

I think you're totally right about metal bands singing with pop stars. When I was 14 and Ozzy sang with Post Malone, I felt pretty weird about it. I came for Ozzy, not Post Malone. I felt kinda betrayed by my hero at the time lol.
Hills I'd die on 1. A lot of people like and dislike things based on their understanding of something. This comes down to how they found it, who showed them if someone did, when in their life they showed it to them and who they were as a person when that music became something they enjoy. I think that what follows is we know a lot about the music we do like, genre wise, and when we hear genres we don't like, I think it comes from a partial natural aversion, you like what you like, but I think another aspect is you don't understand why they made the musical decisions they did, so it sounds bad. But if you knew their influence and what their thought process was behind it, you hear it more closely aligned with how it was intended, and you appreciate it in a way that's more informed. That's NOT to say that if you dislike something you're ignorant, but ignorance does close doors. Once I learned why black metal sounds like it does, I began to love it for what it sets out to do, not what I'd rather it do. I have things I don't listen to, but there's so much music I couldn't listen to it all anyway. 2. Gatekeeping can be a good thing done properly. Name 3 bands is cringe because it's not your business if they're legit and being so caught up in that is narcissism in my opinion. It, and you, shouldn't be taken so seriously. Some people aren't here to perpetuate the music, it's core values from its origin, and keep it focused. Some JUST weren't here for that, and like the sound. Thing is, I understand people do it. To let it die would be a shame, and when the music loses its purpose its as soulless as anything written for money. But people REALLY need to remember another aspect of music is ENJOYMENT. FUN. LET PEOPLE LIVE EVEN if it's irritating when people do not understand. Things and music change. We just gotta get the fuck over it ❤ 3. There's tons of bad songwriting, or not so good singers, but they're not usually what you hear. Repetition is simply annoying. A song and all the songs that ever sound like it once you're fed up will be garbage to you. If you don't like a genre. That's one thing. A singers voice okay cool. But is it BAD? I think people are just calling it bad because they've heard enough of a genre to think they know. And they partially do they'd likely NEVER get into it but there'd be 2 or 3 songs they like and that's it. And they reaaaally like those songs. Whatever is in those songs that cause that is what they like. So they're confident a majority of the genre won't offer it. I think enjoyment is complicated because people get tied up in who the vocalist and members are as well as the music quality, if it serves the genre, the music video if there is one, the vocalists past scandals. Etc. And I think it's why lots say separate the music from the artists. They did what they did, it is what it is, but they did this music too. In the same way you could read a book about a guy in prison for murder, you can listen to their music. It HARDLY supports anyone enough to do them any good. Idk, very specific hills I think or rather specific reasons I'd die on them.. for now

I don't know if it is a breakdown or a chorus, but the do you wish to die part from Preaching For Mass Suicide by دمار is a rare example of a good breakdown.
Counterpoints: - I actually prefer the live versions of Angel of Death and Black Magic cos they're more raw, higher energy and more brutal while the audio integrity is still there. - I dig The Hu's collabs with Lzzy Hale, Wlliam DuVall and Jacoby Shaddux, like an 'East meets West' narrative. We also get some lyrics in English thrown in. Plus having Lzzy featured on a song honoring women, that just made sense. Not trying to convince you, just food for thought. My hill? i dont wear band shirts because i dont go to a lot of shows. crowds get to me, even if they are metal heads. i find it disrespectful to wear a shirt you didn't get at a show.
I have to disagree regarding the live albums comment. As a metalhead involved predominantly the extreme underground, I'll take raw energy over clear sound. It captures the feeling of what it was like to be there. As a collector, its cool to have these to round out a collection as a 'once in a while' listen, also to have the physical media especially if its a well made pack with pictures or a special edition disc etc. But each to their own of course.
What about the breakdown in Pantera’s Domination, shit goes way hard!! Slipknot sucks and to me is intro metal for tweens, patches on battle vests should be of bands that you have seen live or you have been supporting for more than 10/15 years
1. The little 4 of American thrash are leagues better than the big 4, I don’t care who says otherwise. Exodus, Testament, Overkill, and Death Angel are all gifted and should’ve been more. 2. Gimmicks are inherently bad if executed correctly. 3. There is no Sepultura without The Cavalera Brothers. 4. Nu Metal and Early Metalcore will always be in my catalog and Metal enough in my eyes with Thrash, Death, and Classical Heavy. Without em, I would have never gotten into the greats and underground bands. 5. Judas Priest deserved more credit for Heavy Metal’s origins as much as Black Sabbath. They embraced it first before Sabbath ever did. 6. Being more heavy, faster, brutal doesn’t make a song better, etc. I think we all learned that with Slayer’s South Of Heaven. 7. Tuning low isn’t bad, it’s all about the song itself, if it sounds great, who gives a shit?

I agree with all the ones you've said. Breakdowns are played. Way played. The only live albums you need are "Unleashed in the East" and "Live after Death." And, gimmicks keep it interesting, as long as the music's good. My own hills to die on: 1. Contemporary "power metal" is just pop rock. Even the melodic European stuff of the 80s/90s like Running Wild, Attack, Blind Guardian, etc. was still pretty raw and speed metal-based. 2. Gorenoise is nothing more than an attempt by edgelords to one-up each other on being "extreme." On its own, it doesn't sound like anything. 3. You're not missing anything if you don't enjoy genres with the "-core" suffix. Grindcore may be one exception. Maybe. 4. "Hair metal" is derogatory. The only genres that existed in the 80s was speed/thrash metal, glam, and traditional heavy metal.
I think my hill is about wearing T-shirts of bands you don’t listen to. It’s a free country, and you are allowed to be a poser, but just know that you are. You are sporting a conversation piece but unable to have the conversation. I can appreciate your Veiw on live albums. Live DVDs are awesome, but sometimes you just want to enjoy the audio of a live version of a song, or a medley. I like when you are sold both. For example Enslaved’s 2020 Cinematic Tour box set.
What if they just went to a show, liked the band and want to support them, but actually don't like them well enough to listen to more of their music. I mean, band gets money anyway too. Personally don't have any band shirts though coz I'm too poor. So tis a hypothetical.

I wouldn’t gatekeep how much of a fan you have to be to sport a shirt. I mean people who just buy a shirt at Hot Topic and can literally not name one song by the band, even when it’s written right on the shirt.
Also I hate when musicians (or really any entertainers) get political. They risk alienating a large part of their fan base due to some controversy that usually has nothing to do with the music. They are in the entertainment business, it’s great when they can do charities and all, but their opinion and voice in politics usually pisses me off.
The hill I'm willing to die on is that Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse" is NOT the ONLY good thing that symphonic black metal has to offer. Just because Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth (or even Carach Angren) have a slightly more polished sound does NOT make symphonic black metal a sh*tty subgenre. A perfect example of GOOD symphonic black metal to prove them wrong would be Moon In The Scorpio from Limbonic Art (and to up the ante) their sophomore album In Abhorrence Dementia, very wild and freaky sh*t for symphonic black metal music I f**king promise you. So yeah, that's my hill I'm willing to die on.
I agree that breakdowns suck, but not universally. If you have maybe one or two on an album, they're well placed with a meaningful build up to them and a release, and they're not completely generic, they can be cool. My favorite example being from Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells. But the second you get more than one or two on an album, it's boring. And in most cases these days, there are more than 1 or 2 in a song. They've become completely useless.

I mostly agree with your take on live albums but I can see why ppl like them. Like take the MTV unplugged series most notably Nirvana's as to why they sell or even though its not metal David Gilmour's 2016 live performance of Comfortably Numb surpasses its studio version which alone is already a masterpiece of a song.
Point 1: Regarding breakdowns, I agree that they are generally bad and kill the flow of a song. They can however be good if they serve as a bridge. Case in point, Ne Oblivscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope Point 2: Live songs can be good and sometimes as good, if not bette, than their studio conterpart. An example would be Epica - Consign to Oblivion and God Seed - Prosperity and Beauty. However, entire live albums are hit or miss. Not necessarily because they are badly recorded, but because good albums are normally structured in a way to create a desired flow throughout the entire record. A live album will mix songs from an artist/band discography and destroy that. About the DVD over CD part, this may just be me and the fact that I attend around 30 shows per year, but watching a video of a band playing live is some of the most corny and boring things I can think of, when it comes to music. Point 3: The issue isn't the collabs with other people as much as how they delude their sound in the process. Also, I don't think Ozzy cares or needs to be part of the public zeigeist again. He probably just did it because he genuinely was interested. Point 4: Gimmicks are mainly there to be more marketable. It makes you stand out in a sea where everybody looks the same from a first glance. It sells more record and makes live shows more interesting. Not a hill to die on but rather just a thing related to you about something you've once said in one of your old videos. I find it interesting that you dislike (or disliked, I don't know if you've changed your mind since then) Sabaton for their song sounding the same, as well as making an effort to make more mainstream music, when Iron Maiden does the same and they're your favourite band (this too may have changed, I just started viewing your videos again after not watching them for years).
I think guy metalheads simping for a female fronted band just because the lead singer is hot is pretty corny. The lead singer of Jinger for example I like her not because she's hot but she's amazing vocalist.

I listen to bands like Jinjer and arch enemy even when girls aren’t around, I could really care less when it comes to only listening to a specific band just so you can get girls, plus I’m gay so it’s not like that’ll ever work on me

Breakdowns are like sex scenes. Usually they are totally unnecessary and gratuitous, but sometimes they actually serve the plot. The 3 minute mark in Floods by Pantera fucks.

Two metal genres I hate with a passion is black metal and metalcore, two metal genres I absolutely love is Deathcore and death metal I will die on my death metal hill for those true statements 🤘
For me, it's that: Mark Shelton is one of the greatest guitarists to ever grace metal and the fact people only barely started to recognise him after he passed is a travesty. Death's discography is not as good as people say it is. Individual Thought Patterns is mediocre, Sound of Perseverance is horrible, and Scream Bloody Gore is one of those albums that you recognise the significance of but would never listen to over Leprosy. Breakdowns are a poor man's imitation of mosh sections in thrash songs (not sure what to call it but that's what Scott Ian says lol. examples would be Rotten to the Core, Nuclear Winter, Now It's Dark, you know what I mean) and those are always actually enjoyable and interesting, they keep the song moving and varied without stretching it out. Ozzy should have reeeeeally stopped after No More Tears, he's got nothing left in him. 'Blood' by Anthrax is the most criminally underrated drum performance in all of thrash. Cory Christner is just as good of a drummer as Randy Foxe, no Manilla Road fan will admit it but I'll say it. Just listen to the album Playground of the Damned, that shit is out of this world. Re-thrash, NWOTHM, and NWOOSDM are all fucking awesome and just as cool as the eras they pay tribute to. Seriously, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust and Lich King, Visigoth, Sumerlands and Slough Feg, 200 Stab Wounds, Frozen Soul and Gatecreeper, are those bands not badass??? Also, yes. Live recordings are so pointless, and deathcore is stupid, and breakdowns ruin songs. Cool video man. Always love to see notifs from you.
@@IntercactusYKW it’s my favorite of them but honestly all of Death’s discography is top shelf (especially everything from Human on up). Also live recordings are definitely not pointless. Yes the crowd interactions and actually seeing the performance are a huge part of the charm, but on top of that there are a good number of bands who simply perform their songs better live than on the studio recording so in many cases you get better versions of their songs from the live albums.
My hill to die on is that gatekeeping black metal, and worrying that it will become mainstream is pointless. The music itself gatekeeps because most people who hear it say it feels like listening to someone scratch a chalkboard. People will eat up the aesthetics and themes when separated from the music, but the music is never going mainstream.
My hills to die on: -Metal peaked in quality with Traditional Heavy Metal -Keyboards are for Power Metal, not Black Metal -Glam Metal is awesome (the music, not the look) -Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and King Crimson are not Classic Rock, they are "Proto Metal" (60s bands are Classic Rock)
Hills I will die on Pop metal is still metal rainbow, House of lords, King kobra, railway, the scorpions, kiel, Hanover fist, cactus Re-recordings are out, I don't care how much work went into it jukebox Heroes by Foreigner was the last straw. Grunge is not rock and roll I actually find trying to mutate the two together kind of disrespectful seeing as how for a while there grunge and post-grunge all but put down traditional heavy metal yes bands like Damn Yankees were paid a million dollars to make one more ballad for a movie and then vamoose! Brownsville Station is metal AF seriously go back and listen to at least their greatest hits album and tell me I'm wrong. Black Sabbath made heavy metal popular but they weren't the ones who actually started it. I think that belongs to Sir Lord baltimore and blue cheer. Also Grand Funk Railroad was surprisingly heavy in the beginning.
My Big Hill: Beyond the "Big Three" DARKTHRONE albums, "Old Star" is the best release. The new one has a few memorable tracks, but they are underrated as a band for having mostly good albums since the early 90's. They have a better track record than Metallica. Also another dying hill, Fenriz is underrated as a drummer.
im not as against breakdowns as you are. i love stoner doom and new orleans sludge and they are everywhere. sometimes you need to throttle back to gun it later. the breakdown in lust in space is also the example i would use of where it works. obviously if you do it all the time to try to match some genre stereotype that is a terrible use of it. also live albums sometimes are better than the studio. idk if you consider zeal and ardor metal, some dont, metal archives doesnt (but they have hank iii so figure that one), but i cannot stand their studio albums. overproduced crap (this is my hill, just record it and leave the pitch correction for the pop stars). grab their live in london album (the performance is also on youtube). frankly i stopped caring when they went full woke blm crap. its still a great album. those are the only two things i kind of disagree with. gwar is fucking awesome. you get metal but also comedy and theatrics. its broadway for metalheads.

You are being incredibly generalizing with your first and third segments. I don't think I've ever listened to a song where a breakdown completely killed the flow of a song or just came off as nothing but padding, and while it's fine if core just isn't your thing, I think it's kind of foolish to completely write off the concept as a whole. And as far as collaborations with pop artists go, maybe the artist wanted to step out of their comfort zone and try something new? Maybe it isn't them wanting to be sellouts? Again, it's fine if you're just not a fan of the songs themselves, but I really roll my eyes whenever I hear these sorts of complaints about an artist "selling out". I'm just saying, statements like those are why a lot of people view metalheads as close-minded assholes.

Some of my hills to die on: 1. Metal can be mixed with any genre, there will always be fans of it no matter what genre(s) it is mixed with. Even if you personally hate it, it doesn't mean it "isn't metal". 2. No self-respecting metalhead (or any person ever) listens to NSBM. I will die on that hill, if you listen to NSBM you're a fucking nazi. Idc, fuck you. 3. A lot of the hate on 'core' genres (ESPECIALLY METALCORE) comes from mostly Death and/or Black fans mad that those bands in those genres are more popular than their favourites ever will be. Of course there are still big bands in those genres that are very relevant still and arguably more influential, like Death; Mayhem; Cannibal Corpse; Carcass; Darkthrone; etc, but for the most part those genres pail in comparison to the popularity of the 'core' genres. 4. Nu Metal IS metal, I mean look at the NAME for a start. It may be very different stylistically to most metal genres, but it's still metal. Kawaii Metal is also still metal, and that is also very different stylistically to most other metal genres too. Not all metal has to be guitar solos and harsh vocals to be real metal, I mean just look at some Progressive Metal. 5. A lot of metal bands take themselves too seriously and need to let go a bit and have some fun with their work. At the end of the day, it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable to create and perform music. 6. Metal bands can and should experiment with other genres within their music to create more unique combinations. A little experimentation is a good thing for bands, to avoid becoming stylistically stagnant. However, don't stray from your core genre too much, or you risk alienating your fans. It's okay to try new stuff, but if you release multiple albums that are completely different from your original style, sure you could pick up new fans, but you also potentially push away older fans. Sometimes a stylistic change can work, but a lot of the time it just falls flat. One example I can think of for the negative side of this is Asking Alexandria's "Like A House On Fire" album, which completely removed itself from the band's metal roots, instead opting for a more hard rock, arena rock sort of sound, which was almost universally met with backlash and disapproval. Thank goodness they opted for a more return-to-form sound for their follow-up album. And that's all from me...
You are entitled to your opinion and no one should ever change your mind about what you like or dont like. I like some deathcore and i like breakdowns, i also like Ghost. I am happy to admit that i like these things and when people say its bad im not that bothered by it. Everyone has an opinion and it may vary from my own but it wont stop me listening to music i enjoy. I would like to recommend ice nine kills to you as i know you are a big fan of horror. All there songs are about horror movies. Not sure if it is your thing but the songs and videos are done really well. They have done songs about chucky, friday13th, nightmare on elm street and more. The main heavy metal hill I'm willing to die on is that power metal is actually a great genre that gets ragged on because it's people having fun for a change, instead of pretending they're the most hardcore people on the planet 24/7. Which is way more lame.
It also was born out of great bands like Dio and Iron Maiden, so those are other reasons why I love it as a subgenre. Not to mention it's somewhere I can hear my shared love for fantasy and mythology in music.

Great video, the metal bill I’m willing to die on is that great metal is still being made. I’ve met some that have said good music stopped being made when they graduated high school. I think metal is getting better as time goes on. With recording becoming more accessible, so much great music is being made. And also my other hill im willing to die on, bring back the garage demos.

I have no problems with gimmicks as long as they're backed up by great playing and songs. KISS was probably the ultimate gimmick band, but they had great songs and put on killer live shows.
I'm of two minds when it comes to live albums. I understand you are missing out on something. However, I grew up on some classic live albums. Unleashed in the East by Judas Priest, Made in Japan by Deep Purple, KISS Alive, Strangers in the Night by UFO, Tokyo Tapes by Scorpions, Live After Death by Iron Maiden, etc. Maybe I'm more opposed to the over saturation of live albums, like releasing them after every tour.
I'll be dying on a fair few of those hills also brother. While I 90% agree on live albums however, I have to mention a couple of anomalies. Child in Time and Fear of the Dark. Those live recordings just seem to buck the trend and I actually prefer live to the studio versions. Also, could Alice in Chains unplugged be considered live? A hill that I will die on is that I think the Black Album deserves more respect and credit than it's given by some of the old guard. Black Album was a gateway to metal for a lot of people, myself included.
I agree, Black Album isn't even a bad metal album. It's just not thrash, which is the main reason everyone rags on it. But as a heavy metal album, it rules. It was a gateway album for me too.

Regarding live recordings: exceptions are the live performance that actually add something or otherwise are better than the studio version in some way. However, in the entire history of rock and metal you can count these exceptions on the fingers of one hand of a chainsaw operator. An example is Made in Japan by Deep Purple.
I agree with almost all your points, except the one about live albums, obviously it's better to have the live image but many times I just like to listen to live albums, for example Sabaton (my favorite band) have two specific live albums that I love to watch but to listen to as well, the Swedish Empire Tour Live at Woodstock and the Great TourLive at Prague in particular. Also, sometimes I like their live performances better than the original performances of some tracks, as in the case of these two albums I mentioned.
But what about the breakdown in pantera's domination?
I maintain that 'gatekeeping' is a good thing. If a band isn't metal, don't insist that it is. You're clearly wrong about live albums. You aren't much of a black metal fan if you can't appreciate Mayhem - Live In Leipzig.

There are live albums that do sound better than studio albums from bands like Pink Floyd, Saxon, Motörhead, Pantera, Children of Bodom, etc.. it all depends on how they produce it.

In regards to "live recorded albums" . They used to serve a better purpose 20 years ago, before YT, Before you could see your fav underground band live. Hearing a live grind CD was like a diamond in the rough. Also, if you live no where near a city where bands come to....having a live CD is close as you ever come to hearing your fav underground metal/grind band play live.
ive been to hellfest in french this weekend and i saw metallica there, i must say i was really disapointed, they did some really great songs but it isnt the metallica that they used to be, like at the end of the show he did a 10 min speech and like everybody just walked away from the stage

i think part of that is some of the more expiremental stuff they did. early stuff being punk adjacent. when they started making smooth jazz and country songs, i think that turns off a lot of metal heads. metal purists should start at violence and ignore the earlier works. though you should at some point do scum dogs for the gwar lore and maybe ragnarok.
I think suffocation is the only band that has good breakdowns.

For most of these I have a "to each their own" point of view, though with live recorded albums I think I can give you one exception when a live-album is worth the purchase and as an example I will give the one live album that I own on purpose (as in, not a part of some deluxe edition): Septicflesh's Infernus Sinfonica MMXIX. What would make this album worth owning? It is a unique live-performance of the band with a full orchestra and choir, giving the whole experience a very unique and special feel. And that's the only time I will say yes to a live album. When it does something actually extraordinary and something that isn't your typical live show.
As for Hills I'm willing to die on:
- You don't have to like the headliner on a festival, for them to deserve their spot on the stage. Recently with Graspop Metal Meeting, they had Electric Callboy as an early evening headliner (they weren't even the main one) and people were complaining about how it doesn't belong there and, with some irony argueing that Five Finger Death Punch (which played later and in a more official headliner capacity) definitely did, despite both bands having both large fanbases in the metal community as well as strong detractors... Both are divisive bands but the reason why they are where they are is clear, they draw crowds and if you don't like it, go to a different stage, there is plenty of other bands to see and discover, playing at the same time.
- You don't have to agree with everything a band says or does, to still be able to enjoy their music (this goes with just about any artist or celeb): a lot of people are dickheads who shouldn't be left alone with access to social media, why do you expect artists to be different? I understand if this is a dealbreaker for some people, for me it depends on the artist and what has been set but I refuse to dig through their whole history to uncover potentially problematic ideas or quotes before starting to listen to them. Who has the time?
- You don't have to be a fan of every genre of metal to be a metalhead but if your taste in metal is limited to a single band (or just a handful), you are a fan of said band (and good for you, enjoy it to its fullest) but not really a metal fan.
- You don't have to like the old, classic bands in order to be a "true" metalhead. Even if all the bands you listen to started between 2010 - 2020 (or maybe even later), if you listen to a good portion of metal music, you can be considered a metalhead. It is a flex I've seen some people make, the "oh how can you not like this 'famous '80's band'"... Easy, not my thing (though I do enjoy some Black Sabbath, Scorpions and Iron Maiden from time to time, but my taste is mostly 2000's and onwards...

Breakdowns: I understand breakdowns for filler, but some breakdowns are the highlight of the song, a slow chuggy section and really good rhythms.
Live album: Some are good, like unplugged albums are really good. But I'd rather a studio version
Collaboration: outside of Metallica it's pretty good, Anthrax & Public enemy, Korn & Ice Cube, Igorr and CorpseGrinder, Rhapsody & Christopher Lee. Some are fantastic
Gimmicks: Some cool, but some suck, like Ice Nine Kills with all the slasher type stuff. Kinda cringe stuff for nightmare before Christmas moms. But some are classics, like Spinal Tap, Gwar, Twilight Force, cool stuff

I think you're totally right about metal bands singing with pop stars. When I was 14 and Ozzy sang with Post Malone, I felt pretty weird about it. I came for Ozzy, not Post Malone. I felt kinda betrayed by my hero at the time lol.
Hills I'd die on
1. A lot of people like and dislike things based on their understanding of something. This comes down to how they found it, who showed them if someone did, when in their life they showed it to them and who they were as a person when that music became something they enjoy. I think that what follows is we know a lot about the music we do like, genre wise, and when we hear genres we don't like, I think it comes from a partial natural aversion, you like what you like, but I think another aspect is you don't understand why they made the musical decisions they did, so it sounds bad. But if you knew their influence and what their thought process was behind it, you hear it more closely aligned with how it was intended, and you appreciate it in a way that's more informed. That's NOT to say that if you dislike something you're ignorant, but ignorance does close doors. Once I learned why black metal sounds like it does, I began to love it for what it sets out to do, not what I'd rather it do. I have things I don't listen to, but there's so much music I couldn't listen to it all anyway.
2. Gatekeeping can be a good thing done properly. Name 3 bands is cringe because it's not your business if they're legit and being so caught up in that is narcissism in my opinion. It, and you, shouldn't be taken so seriously. Some people aren't here to perpetuate the music, it's core values from its origin, and keep it focused. Some JUST weren't here for that, and like the sound. Thing is, I understand people do it. To let it die would be a shame, and when the music loses its purpose its as soulless as anything written for money. But people REALLY need to remember another aspect of music is ENJOYMENT. FUN. LET PEOPLE LIVE EVEN if it's irritating when people do not understand. Things and music change. We just gotta get the fuck over it ❤
3. Arguing over whether a band is a specific genre is fine, truly, because I do think identity is fun to know. It paints a picture. But for example, Ghost BC or Sleep Token. Are they metal? Idk buy instead of being mad at them and the fans over whatever they call it, which shouldn't affect you because they're an outlier, it's 2 bands. Not 100. It's okay if they're not metal. Do you ENJOY it? If you don't enjoy it, stop caring? Idk why people form a grudge almost. People hate ghost because it's not metal but is it GOOD? did you LIKE it? Knocked Loose and whether they're hardcore or not. Did you ENJOY it? Then who cares what this person calls it, they're not everyone or you. I think discussing why people think the things they do is cool, we always find stuff in different ways and it changes how we view them. It's really not that serious a majority of the time. Passion is one thing but the vitriol is what's childish. Be vitriolic I can't tell you otherwise but it's immature. If someone makes a post about liking a band, going out of your way to say they fucking suck is rude. If they asked what people think, fine. But to be aggressively contrary about something like that I find silly.
4. MOST music is good music when you just let it be what it is. There's tons of bad songwriting, or not so good singers, but they're not usually what you hear. Repetition is simply annoying. A song and all the songs that ever sound like it once you're fed up will be garbage to you. If you don't like a genre. That's one thing. A singers voice okay cool. But is it BAD? I think people are just calling it bad because they've heard enough of a genre to think they know. And they partially do they'd likely NEVER get into it but there'd be 2 or 3 songs they like and that's it. And they reaaaally like those songs. Whatever is in those songs that cause that is what they like. So they're confident a majority of the genre won't offer it.
I think enjoyment is complicated because people get tied up in who the vocalist and members are as well as the music quality, if it serves the genre, the music video if there is one, the vocalists past scandals. Etc. And I think it's why lots say separate the music from the artists. They did what they did, it is what it is, but they did this music too. In the same way you could read a book about a guy in prison for murder, you can listen to their music. It HARDLY supports anyone enough to do them any good.
Idk, very specific hills I think or rather specific reasons I'd die on them.. for now

I don't know if it is a breakdown or a chorus, but the do you wish to die part from Preaching For Mass Suicide by دمار is a rare example of a good breakdown.
Counterpoints:
- I actually prefer the live versions of Angel of Death and Black Magic cos they're more raw, higher energy and more brutal while the audio integrity is still there.
- I dig The Hu's collabs with Lzzy Hale, Wlliam DuVall and Jacoby Shaddux, like an 'East meets West' narrative. We also get some lyrics in English thrown in. Plus having Lzzy featured on a song honoring women, that just made sense.
Not trying to convince you, just food for thought.

I have to disagree regarding the live albums comment. As a metalhead involved predominantly the extreme underground, I'll take raw energy over clear sound. It captures the feeling of what it was like to be there. As a collector, its cool to have these to round out a collection as a 'once in a while' listen, also to have the physical media especially if its a well made pack with pictures or a special edition disc etc. But each to their own of course.

4. Nu Metal and Early Metalcore will always be in my catalog and Metal enough in my eyes with Thrash, Death, and Classical Heavy. Without em, I would have never gotten into the greats and underground bands.
5. Judas Priest deserved more credit for Heavy Metal’s origins as much as Black Sabbath. They embraced it first before Sabbath ever did.
6. Being more heavy, faster, brutal doesn’t make a song better, etc. I think we all learned that with Slayer’s South Of Heaven.
7. Tuning low isn’t bad, it’s all about the song itself, if it sounds great, who gives a shit?

I agree with all the ones you've said. Breakdowns are played. Way played. The only live albums you need are "Unleashed in the East" and "Live after Death." And, gimmicks keep it interesting, as long as the music's good. My own hills to die on:
1. Contemporary "power metal" is just pop rock. Even the melodic European stuff of the 80s/90s like Running Wild, Attack, Blind Guardian, etc. was still pretty raw and speed metal-based.
2. Gorenoise is nothing more than an attempt by edgelords to one-up each other on being "extreme." On its own, it doesn't sound like anything.
3. You're not missing anything if you don't enjoy genres with the "-core" suffix. Grindcore may be one exception. Maybe.
4. "Hair metal" is derogatory. The only genres that existed in the 80s was speed/thrash metal, glam, and traditional heavy metal.
I think my hill is about wearing T-shirts of bands you don’t listen to. It’s a free country, and you are allowed to be a poser, but just know that you are. You are sporting a conversation piece but unable to have the conversation. I can appreciate your Veiw on live albums. Live DVDs are awesome, but sometimes you just want to enjoy the audio of a live version of a song, or a medley. I like when you are sold both. For example Enslaved’s 2020 Cinematic Tour box set.
What if they just went to a show, liked the band and want to support them, but actually don't like them well enough to listen to more of their music. I mean, band gets money anyway too.

I wouldn’t gatekeep how much of a fan you have to be to sport a shirt. I mean people who just buy a shirt at Hot Topic and can literally not name one song by the band, even when it’s written right on the shirt.
Also I hate when musicians (or really any entertainers) get political. They risk alienating a large part of their fan base due to some controversy that usually has nothing to do with the music. They are in the entertainment business, it’s great when they can do charities and all, but their opinion and voice in politics usually pisses me off.

The hill I'm willing to die on is that Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse" is NOT the ONLY good thing that symphonic black metal has to offer. Just because Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth (or even Carach Angren) have a slightly more polished sound does NOT make symphonic black metal a sh*tty subgenre. A perfect example of GOOD symphonic black metal to prove them wrong would be Moon In The Scorpio from Limbonic Art (and to up the ante) their sophomore album In Abhorrence Dementia, very wild and freaky sh*t for symphonic black metal music I f**king promise you. So yeah, that's my hill I'm willing to die on.
Another thing that I want to say is I also hate and don't understand live recorded albums, I agree with blackmetal werewolf 100% 🤘
I agree that breakdowns suck, but not universally. If you have maybe one or two on an album, they're well placed with a meaningful build up to them and a release, and they're not completely generic, they can be cool. My favorite example being from Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells. But the second you get more than one or two on an album, it's boring. And in most cases these days, there are more than 1 or 2 in a song. They've become completely useless.

I mostly agree with your take on live albums but I can see why ppl like them. Like take the MTV unplugged series most notably Nirvana's as to why they sell or even though its not metal David Gilmour's 2016 live performance of Comfortably Numb surpasses its studio version which alone is already a masterpiece of a song.

Point 1: Regarding breakdowns, I agree that they are generally bad and kill the flow of a song. They can however be good if they serve as a bridge. Case in point, Ne Oblivscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope
Point 2: Live songs can be good and sometimes as good, if not bette, than their studio conterpart. An example would be Epica - Consign to Oblivion and God Seed - Prosperity and Beauty. However, entire live albums are hit or miss. Not necessarily because they are badly recorded, but because good albums are normally structured in a way to create a desired flow throughout the entire record. A live album will mix songs from an artist/band discography and destroy that.
About the DVD over CD part, this may just be me and the fact that I attend around 30 shows per year, but watching a video of a band playing live is some of the most corny and boring things I can think of, when it comes to music.
Point 3: The issue isn't the collabs with other people as much as how they delude their sound in the process. Also, I don't think Ozzy cares or needs to be part of the public zeigeist again. He probably just did it because he genuinely was interested.
Point 4: Gimmicks are mainly there to be more marketable. It makes you stand out in a sea where everybody looks the same from a first glance. It sells more record and makes live shows more interesting.

I find it interesting that you dislike (or disliked, I don't know if you've changed your mind since then) Sabaton for their song sounding the same, as well as making an effort to make more mainstream music, when Iron Maiden does the same and they're your favourite band (this too may have changed, I just started viewing your videos again after not watching them for years).
I think guy metalheads simping for a female fronted band just because the lead singer is hot is pretty corny. The lead singer of Jinger for example I like her not because she's hot but she's amazing vocalist.

I listen to bands like Jinjer and arch enemy even when girls aren’t around, I could really care less when it comes to only listening to a specific band just so you can get girls, plus I’m gay so it’s not like that’ll ever work on me

Mark Shelton is one of the greatest guitarists to ever grace metal and the fact people only barely started to recognise him after he passed is a travesty.
Death's discography is not as good as people say it is. Individual Thought Patterns is mediocre, Sound of Perseverance is horrible, and Scream Bloody Gore is one of those albums that you recognise the significance of but would never listen to over Leprosy.
Breakdowns are a poor man's imitation of mosh sections in thrash songs (not sure what to call it but that's what Scott Ian says lol. examples would be Rotten to the Core, Nuclear Winter, Now It's Dark, you know what I mean) and those are always actually enjoyable and interesting, they keep the song moving and varied without stretching it out.
Ozzy should have reeeeeally stopped after No More Tears, he's got nothing left in him.
'Blood' by Anthrax is the most criminally underrated drum performance in all of thrash.
Cory Christner is just as good of a drummer as Randy Foxe, no Manilla Road fan will admit it but I'll say it. Just listen to the album Playground of the Damned, that shit is out of this world.
Re-thrash, NWOTHM, and NWOOSDM are all fucking awesome and just as cool as the eras they pay tribute to. Seriously, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust and Lich King, Visigoth, Sumerlands and Slough Feg, 200 Stab Wounds, Frozen Soul and Gatecreeper, are those bands not badass???

Also live recordings are definitely not pointless. Yes the crowd interactions and actually seeing the performance are a huge part of the charm, but on top of that there are a good number of bands who simply perform their songs better live than on the studio recording so in many cases you get better versions of their songs from the live albums.
My hill to die on is that gatekeeping black metal, and worrying that it will become mainstream is pointless. The music itself gatekeeps because most people who hear it say it feels like listening to someone scratch a chalkboard. People will eat up the aesthetics and themes when separated from the music, but the music is never going mainstream.

My Big Hill: Beyond the "Big Three" DARKTHRONE albums, "Old Star" is the best release. The new one has a few memorable tracks, but they are underrated as a band for having mostly good albums since the early 90's. They have a better track record than Metallica. Also another dying hill, Fenriz is underrated as a drummer.

im not as against breakdowns as you are. i love stoner doom and new orleans sludge and they are everywhere. sometimes you need to throttle back to gun it later. the breakdown in lust in space is also the example i would use of where it works. obviously if you do it all the time to try to match some genre stereotype that is a terrible use of it.
also live albums sometimes are better than the studio. idk if you consider zeal and ardor metal, some dont, metal archives doesnt (but they have hank iii so figure that one), but i cannot stand their studio albums. overproduced crap (this is my hill, just record it and leave the pitch correction for the pop stars). grab their live in london album (the performance is also on youtube). frankly i stopped caring when they went full woke blm crap. its still a great album.

You are being incredibly generalizing with your first and third segments. I don't think I've ever listened to a song where a breakdown completely killed the flow of a song or just came off as nothing but padding, and while it's fine if core just isn't your thing, I think it's kind of foolish to completely write off the concept as a whole. And as far as collaborations with pop artists go, maybe the artist wanted to step out of their comfort zone and try something new? Maybe it isn't them wanting to be sellouts? Again, it's fine if you're just not a fan of the songs themselves, but I really roll my eyes whenever I hear these sorts of complaints about an artist "selling out". I'm just saying, statements like those are why a lot of people view metalheads as close-minded assholes.

Some of my hills to die on:
1. Metal can be mixed with any genre, there will always be fans of it no matter what genre(s) it is mixed with. Even if you personally hate it, it doesn't mean it "isn't metal".
2. No self-respecting metalhead (or any person ever) listens to NSBM. I will die on that hill, if you listen to NSBM you're a fucking nazi. Idc, fuck you.
3. A lot of the hate on 'core' genres (ESPECIALLY METALCORE) comes from mostly Death and/or Black fans mad that those bands in those genres are more popular than their favourites ever will be. Of course there are still big bands in those genres that are very relevant still and arguably more influential, like Death; Mayhem; Cannibal Corpse; Carcass; Darkthrone; etc, but for the most part those genres pail in comparison to the popularity of the 'core' genres.
4. Nu Metal IS metal, I mean look at the NAME for a start. It may be very different stylistically to most metal genres, but it's still metal. Kawaii Metal is also still metal, and that is also very different stylistically to most other metal genres too. Not all metal has to be guitar solos and harsh vocals to be real metal, I mean just look at some Progressive Metal.
5. A lot of metal bands take themselves too seriously and need to let go a bit and have some fun with their work. At the end of the day, it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable to create and perform music.
6. Metal bands can and should experiment with other genres within their music to create more unique combinations. A little experimentation is a good thing for bands, to avoid becoming stylistically stagnant. However, don't stray from your core genre too much, or you risk alienating your fans. It's okay to try new stuff, but if you release multiple albums that are completely different from your original style, sure you could pick up new fans, but you also potentially push away older fans. Sometimes a stylistic change can work, but a lot of the time it just falls flat.
One example I can think of for the negative side of this is Asking Alexandria's "Like A House On Fire" album, which completely removed itself from the band's metal roots, instead opting for a more hard rock, arena rock sort of sound, which was almost universally met with backlash and disapproval. Thank goodness they opted for a more return-to-form sound for their follow-up album.
And that's all from me...
Personally I stay away from NSBM but that same logic should be applied to the numerous far left bands that are borderline Stalin apologists.
