Thanks man. I’ve just started riding. I left work today on my 03 vtx1800r and stalled at a light. Restarted and headed on down the road when the starter "started starting!" Haha sorry, had to. I’ve had another issue where the starter wouldn’t start. The previous owner had mentioned needing a new solenoid, but I was hoping there was a video to confirm my situation. I appreciate you. I’ll have a solenoid in hand in 3 hours. Y’all take care.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful! I couldn't help it and replaced the solenoid with a Honda OEM solenoid. It worked and fixed the problem, not sure for how long though. I think the cheap Pirates battery I got on Amazaon one year ago will need to be replaced soon as well.
Thank You for your video. Just happen to my VTX 1800C with the kick stand down while in neutral I let go of the clutch about to get off the bike, When the bike leap forward knocking me off. Caught me by surprise. Great Info...
About 4 months ago I bought a solenoid from eBay that was meant for VTX 1800 , it worked well for 4 months and now the problem returned, I guess I'm going to buy another one from my local auto store.
Same issue here. I read on vtx Cafe that the solenoid can get welded due to a weak battery. A good wack should break the weld, but if it's the battery, replacing the solenoid won't solve the issue. If didn't for me. The replacement solenoid worked for a while. I haven't tried this tractor solenoid, but I'm going to charge and take in my battery for a test first.
Awesome 👍 video thanks for the infomy motorcycle is doing the same thing and I thought it was the relay but was in a hundred percent sure your video just makes me more positive I found the problem thanks again and thanks again for the good cheap fix
@@living2learn138 The factory solenoid is undersized for the amperage it takes to crank the VTX over, and when the battery is low, the starter won't crank, but the contacts in the solenoid weld together. The larger solenoid will not cause any problems, and in this case, solves problems. The larger solenoid is designed to handle more cranking power than the small motorcycle battery can provide.
Many, many thanks for sharing ‼️ You saved my day 👍🏼 🍻 Best Regards Harald (Stuttgart) ( scheiße dass ich das Video erst nach 2 Stunden Fehlersuche gesehen habe 🤦♂️)
Would be nice to know what is causing this to happen, something is obviously causing this to happen, maybe the Honda solenoid you got was faulty. I'm really curious what would cause this
This was a work around but it doesn't address the cause?... you mentioned you also put in a honda OEM solenoid with same issue of bike not turning off, replacing it with a different solenoid from a lawnmower? doesnt make sense unless internally or amp wise there is something different?
The commodity Doesn't make sense, right. I'm no motorcycle mechanic or electrician. I read on a VTX blog that a lawn mower solenoid would fix this common problem. I tried it and it worked for me. I'm second owner so not sure if something was changed before I got it but other VTX owners have the same issue so I assumed it came from the factory with the problem.
thanks a lot for this video. I got my BMW GS310 last week and today I got the same problem. I hope BMW will take care with it. So starter solenoid is the main issue here, am I correct?
@@Larsterlarster2010 yeah, they fixed it in a week and they changed the starter relay. I do not trust this bike anymore, will ride it a year and upgrade to GSA1250 or 1300
I wonder what the electrical problem causing this is. My Zx6r does this. In theory the the starter button completes the circuit and if it does this then the bike will run regardless of any on/off switch unless the circuit has found another path to complete it. I have tested all if my electrical lines from the ignition to the starter button to the fuse box and to the solenoid and starter. All are intact and have continuity. I may pull the battery and have it checked. It reads fine but who knows under a load if it is good. Then I guess Ill buy a car or lawnmower solenoid.

Careful though...this applies current straight to the starter and bypasses all the saftey switches....so make sure your in neutral or you'll be rolling  Maybe get you by untill the switch comes in." I have a 1982 yamaha virago. Does same thing. Keeps cranking over even when turned off. I have to disconnect battery positive cable to get it to stop. This sucks.

Fox82 I hope changing the battery helped you, that is what I tried first and didn't work for me. I replaced the battery with an original, an AGM and a gel type none of those batteries fixed the issue.

I just installed a thirteen dollar solenoid form Home Depot and so far so good. Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for the video, mine just started doing this today so I’m going to try and fix it myself. Appreciate your advice.

Will try this👍
I try the suggestion also it it worked, bought solenoid from local auto parts store Advance Thanks
Why not use one from Honda? is there an advantage by using generic one? could the generic solenoid harm any other parts on the bike?
I did and it worked a couple of months but the generic continues to shine so far 4 months so far and 16 00 verses 48 00

I’m curious about heat as a possible cause.
Battery getting bad. Drawing too many amps. It welds the contacts in the solenoid

My vtx 1800 starter button was getting stuck. Put dielectric grease on contacts and hasn’t had a problem since!
Is that a cheap ebay one you first bought. The one you pulled off didn't look like a oe Honda solenoid.
@centennialfarm9811 That was the original that was taken off as far as I know. Bike was low mileage, too soon for solenoid problems I would think
