I just watched this video. I did not know that there was two fuses in the electric boxes on the left hand side of the engine. Replaced the fuse for the fuel pump and BINGO!!! It started. Happy Days
My 2003 VTX 1800 has been sitting in my garage for over 1 year. I was fearful that the bike was going to be sold as "Not running" because I am not a mechanic and money is real scarce. I watched your video, replaced both 30a fuses, put a new battery and gas in the bike, and the !@#$ is now running! Thank you X 10. Now I have to clean and wax it, and of course get on the road. I'm having a damn good week bro.
Very good video. In less than 13 minutes, you cover pretty much all problems than can prevent my bike to start. I have a VTX 1300 but most of it apply (even if I need to find the fuse somewhere else I guess.) Very good teaching - clear and concise. Thank you very much.
Hi John, Beautiful day in New Jersey today and went for a long ride. Got home and the kill switch went screwy on me. I tried restarting the bike, lights, fuel pump, no cranks. Im no mechanic but your video was so easy to follow, I have confirmed that I have a bad solenoid, which I will get my replacement from Partzilla. I have an 04' VTX1800S1 and I've saved all your videos. Thanks! And I hope you will make some more!
I am blessed with 2-2002 vtx 1800 sr' and one vtx 1800 cr. Having had these issues in the past i feel blessed with this on the net. Your great for us all. Thank you.
I agree with the previous guy that this is EACTLY what I needed.Thank you so much for being so thorough and crystal clear about the process One weird footnote about my situation is that I’ve got a 1984V 65 magna that normally wasn’t having any problem except after the bike fell over and I finally got it standing up. It kind of started but ultimately just completely died and now I have no electrical. I’m not sure what the correlation can be from falling over and loss of electrical.
Not sure if an '84 would have a bank angle sensor, but the VTX in this video does. Its a mechanical switch with a rocker inside. When the bike leans past a certain degree (42.5° on the VTX in the video) the bike shuts off for safety. Sometimes that Bank angle sensor goes bad or gets fouled and the bike won't start. Likely not the issue in your '84, but I don't know much about the Magnas. I had an '83 Magna 750, but I honestly never worked on it before I sold it to buy the VTX1800.
Hey John always like watching the Honda VTX fix I have the 06 f VTX 1800 and I always get a good go about trying to find out what's wrong with mine when I watch your video so I hope you still have your 1800 cuz I like watching it thank you
Wow man you just save me a bunch! I Have a 2003 vtx1800r that I just had to replace the gasket on the left crank case. When I put her back together she refused to crank 😱 - Turns out my starter solenoid is bad. Not sure what these 2 have in common it was cranking over just fine before I did that, but this video really helped me to narrow it down and find the issue! - Thanks and safe journeys 😎🤘
Thanks for this video, especially with the starter solenoid not clicking as it should and with the fuses. I have an 04 1800R and it just wouldn't crank over last week, replaced the battery and bought extra fuses as well as a new solenoid.
Thanks again. After checking from the battery back I discovered the connector on the starter relay solenoid melting. Once I straighten out the connection on the four prong connector charging system worked like brand new.
Very nice presentation Brochacho!! My bike tried to leave me stranded yesterday and went completely out of electricity after I flipped the switch. I had no idea what to do so I went inside the side panels and started moving wires around and when I was about to give up I gave it one more shot and it came on so there must be a short or something. I got to work with it again today but it started sputtering just when I got to work so im hoping I get home. maybe those fuses were getting worn or may be oxidized who knows. when I figure it out I'll let you know.
You don't need any tools to check a fuze. Just pull it out and you can see if it's blown or not. The starter relay is an easy fix, IF you are getting power to it, and it doesn't work, you can replace it with one from just about any small engine repair shop or automotive supply store. Other than that, it can also be the starter switch itself, which is another common problem when the bike gets older. They get corroded or can just plain wear out the connections.
Very nice run through of these switch/relay checks. Thank you. One thing I would have wondered when the main fuse was blown is 'What caused the main fuse to blow?' Because that's my problem. The bike ('05 VTX1800) will start and run, but if I shut it off and turn the key back on and it blows the fuse you mentioned. If I wait a few hours I can start it again (with a new fuse in place), but if I shut it off and turn it back on - 'pop' goes the fuse again. When I ran across my blown fuse, I thought I was on easy street (just like in the video), but my issue was not solved with a simple fuse replacement. I don't really expect anyone to answer this. It's just another non-start issue that may arise. It probably isn't as easy to diagnose though. Any help would be much appreciated.
very valuable information on starting issues. I actually had to deal with that problem on mine, except it was a physical problem. The starter button pushed in and broke, it didn't come back out, and it didn't start the bike. I didn't think to use the jumper, but luckily we were able to get the bike going because we were on a hill. Rolling start got it going. Wish I would have thought about the jumper wire though...LOL. So were you jumping from the actual red battery lead to the hot wire on the solenoid? it was hard to see with the hand placement, but it makes sense that it would work.
Great video. I’ve had my vtx1800 for 10 year and I was always under the impression that you never turn on/off the switch by the push to start button unless you had to kill the engine in an emergency.
This was great. My problem is battery is brand new. Bike died while i was on it. No power anywhere no lights no horn no start. The 2, 30amp fuses are good. Where do I go from there? Thank you enjoy all your videos!
I'm the one Charles is inquiring for. I have a 2002 VTX 1800R Trike that I'm trying to get the starter/stop/kill switch replaced on and it's proving to be quite the challenge for me. The throttle cables seem to be my biggest issue.
Great video man I always buy partzilla. I was wondering I have a vtx 1800c, I was driving to work and it died on me not even 1 mile away from my house. I had hearing protection on so it was hard to hear anything. It had some not great power then died. I shut everything down and restarted and no problems since and I had done some rides after no problem. It kinda bothers me. What could that be?
I have a question 🙋🏽 about a switch start button that burned out while troubleshooting a 2003 buell blast 500 , it turns out that the throttle cable inside the assembly got out of the track and made contact with either start or killed switch connection inside. I found out their was a problems with the control switch because the ignition fuse 7.5a kept burning out. I placed a 10a fuse to prolonged it a little longer and again it popped the fuse, then I went up to 30a, at which point the kill start switch assembly started to smoke , I want to test them connection, your video helped me start that process later today. My question is, other then the wiring, could I have caused other parts of the systems to burn out or fail while fixing the problem? I am waiting on a replacement kill start switch along with starter reply and system reply to come in, I also purchased the main wiring harness too... Thank you for the great walk through on that last video I saw
very good video... my bike right now has a full battery, but when I press the ignition the lights dim and there is no click, no turnover. Hopefully I can use this info to get it fixed.
Most likely the battery is reading charged, but once you put the load the voltage plummets. You can test it to confirm. Sounds like a new battery is in your future.
Your video has been very helpful. Truefully, I wish I had watched it before spending money and time. My charging problem begin with a bad battery. So I purchased a new battery $107. The battery wasn't charging so I purchased a stator $159. System still not charging. Then I found your video and began testing. The stator ohms was giving me a reading of 001. The diode test was good. My rectifier was giving noting. So, I purchased a new rectifier $55 plus shipping $77 and it's testing good but my system is still not charging. Today, I ordered a diode three way assembly $10. What am I missing? My bike is a 2006 Honda 1300c VTX.
Sounds like you have covered most of the components. When your bike is running, what is the voltage at your battery? If it gets to this point, sometimes the easiest way is to start at one end and test the wires all the way down the system. Figure out where the break in voltage is.
Hi John. Thx for ur prior responses, they helped a lot! I replaced the starter Solenoid with a cheap one and it started right up. The only problem was that it WOULDN'T shut off!! I'm currently letting the DEAD battery charge and I'm going to buy a better relay. Is there anything else I need to do? BTW the starter was making a loud noise. I may need a new battery and starter??? Thx in advance for your help!!! Oh, and the bike didn't start with the wire trick because when i installed the battery, i didn't apply the solenoid wire to the battery. Ha ha
Hey John, I'm working on the same bike I believe. 2005 Honda VTX 1800. I replaced the battery as well as the starter switch (kill switch & push start assy) .... When put my test light on the battery side of the solenoid (terminal) it lights up... When I put it on the starter side post it does not light up (not even when I hit the push start) ... However... when I put it on the yellow wire (starter side) and hit the push start that lights up... I cannot get the bike to start unless I run a screw driver across the solenoid. ** If I jump the wires it will NOT turn over... *** My guess is that it is in the solenoid but I am guessing at this point. Let me know what you think. Thanks, John Wheeler
Hahaha! I have that very knock!! Im in the process of replacing my clutch basket thinking that was the issue. Odd tho, when I pull in the clutch it will go away. Oh well, the used clutch basket will be in tomorrow.
Thank you for this video. I have a 2003 VTX1800R. Brand new battery. When the system is on, all other subsystems power on. I do "FINE-C" to verify start condition, I hear the Solenoid engage, but the starter doesn't spin. I feel confident it's a bad Starter. Does this check out with anyone else?
hey John,...came across your video,....MY PROB. is that i want TO START my bike w/the kickstand down,...can ya help me out w/that,...also 1800 vtx c....
Partzilla whats up man i have a cbr 600 honda f4i i replaced my starter solenoid and still nothing. every time i conmect it with a new fuse my fuse blows out? can u give me any advice?
When I push the starter button the starter motor is slow to react. Sometimes it doesn’t react and I have to keep trying before the starter motor engages. I’ve cleaned the push button start feature, but the hesitation stayed the same. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Thank you. I have had a loose relay connection or maybe a frozen relay. Sometimes no power, some times no start. When I physically tap relay, it will start up and run and restart normal
great video . how easy is it to take apart the throttle cable on the start button, I just ordered it from you guys. I need to put in a new start button, kill switch.
Very easy to understand and informative video. Tha k you for the video! I have a 2002 vtx 1800R/S. Did everything in the video and it still won't start. Battery is showing 12.50, fuses are good. Test lights work for the starter and inside the headlights like you mention. I can hear the fuel pump, press the ignition and headlights go out/dim but nothing else. Any suggestions?
Hi John, just watched this video. Can you tell me what the voltage should read on the yellow/black wire on the starter relay solenoid ? I'm reading 12.2 when starter button is activated. My battery is reading 12.8 volts. The relay will pull in when jumped from battery to relay post ( yellow/red), but not when activated from the starter switch.(12.2) volts.
I've watched few of your videos and found them to be Very informative. I recently bought a 2002 vtx 1800r (runs like a dream) are the engines very similar or completely different?
Good guide. BUT this happened to me: The starter solenoid have 2 nuts for each pole. The upper nut is for securing the cables. But the nuts on the BOTTOM of the poles actually holds and aligns the connecting copper plates inside the solenoid. I once made an error and loosened the 2 BOTTOM nuts on the solenoid while installing a second horn. Without me realizing what had happened after installing the horn, the solenoid would "click/start" intermittently. The copper plates inside the solenoid had been misaligned and had made bad contact because I fiddled with the nuts on the outside securing them. After taking the solenoid apart there was melted copper, sooting and obvious faults. I replaced the solenoid WITHOUT touching the two bottom nuts. Just the upper 2 for the cables :)
In my case today, 04 1300c, I had a similar experience where the bike wouldn't start. Battery good. I was able to get it started after a few attempts. I got it home and started measuring and checking. The headlight wasn't coming on with key on either. So finally, I just wiggled the start button sideways a bit and on came the headlight. I knew the switch was making poor contact. Tomorrow I plan to try to clean the start and the emergency kill switch with contact cleaner spray, if I can can get access to the internal switch contacts. I did the same thing with the turn signal switch several months ago.
I have an 07 1300R that has been sitting on a tender all winter. For a while it had a working headlight and 8n the spring that went out..No crank either.A new interstate battery since last fall. The starter button gave me on and off problems for a while when this all happened. Not being mechanical as most,it's spring and I am going to have my battery voltage checked out of the bike. Fuses ,I'm not sure where to access.Someone stopped my seat bolt cap screws but I finally got em out. Don't know how to find the parts to check next. Makin me old fast.
Something else to consider. Check all your electrical plugs, fuses and connections. If something is loose or has corrosion, it will create a weak or inconsistent connection. Tighten everything down and make sure everything is plugged in tight. Swap out fuses for good measure.
I have vtx 2007 1800 neo is don't run for 3 years , I try to many time try to run ..your video give idea I hope I raid again my baby..gracias for the videos
very good video, I "liked it". my 2005 Honda Shadow 750 has no power at all. It died on me while riding, and I jump started it with a running car and made it home. All fuses and battery are good. I'd really appreciate any advice you could offer.
Thanks for the reply. I will check those next. I had a friend tell me that jumpstarting it may have shorted the wiring harness. What's the likelihood of this?
i have an 06 vtx 1800F before i came across this video i determined it was the solenoid. there was no power going to the starter. now i got power to the starter but no start. all the test point to the starter. could they both go at the same time?
Thanks for the video, great job. Question? I have a 1300 vtx. About to get into trying to find out why it just decides to shut down while riding for no reason. When it does happen, you need to sit there for awhile to wait to restart. It has gotten really bad to a point where it is just happening a lot and can no longer trust it. Any tips on where I should start looking? I am thinking maybe a fuel relay, or yes even the fuel pump, but not ignoring that it could be wiring in the kill switch / starter. Appreciate any comments please. Thanks a lot.
@@MohammadKhan-eg5dz So I went through everything on this bike. but I am pretty sure it was a vacuum leak. The bike was painted a year earlier and the petcock for one was really loose, I think it wasn't tightened proper, and over time loosened of. Possible leak. Tightened up a few things a little better and all seemed to have cured itself. If you suspect a vacuum leak, spray some carb cleaner around the carb, example, carb boot, vacuum lines from carb, etc while its running. If you got a leak, your bike will tell you when she starts to idle rough.
@@kmarche100 Hi, I checked the fuel line from carb to the petcock and it was good then I lightly tapped under the float bowl, and it worked. Bike started and idled for about 10 minutes, and it cut off again. I tried few times to restart, and it didn't start then I slightly opened the choke and bike started. With the choke slightly opened I rode about 60 miles and had zero issues. Now if I close the choke the bike won't start. I properly adjusted the air/fuel ratio and it's about at 2 turns and I did try 2.5 & 3 turns to eliminate the need for choke but the bike wouldn't start. I had a similar problem before when I purchased the bike it didn't start/run without the choke being slightly open but after I cleaned the carb/jets it ran fine for about 50-60 miles and then I ran into this float problem. Is it time to get the bigger jets now since the bike won't run without the choke? Is it bad for the bike to run with the choke open? I'm truly thankful for your help & support. Best Regards
Have a 2002 VTX Honda 1800 C with starter problems (won't start) - local dealership charged me just short of $400 to replace starter mag. and try to understand problem - could not fix problem. Can you suggest a great mechanic in the Saint Paul - Minneapolis, Minnesota area that can fix my starter problem with the knowledge of John C?
I have a 01 Suzuki Intruder 1500. All of a sudden when I turn key on all lights turn on but fuel pump dont . Push start button nothing happens. Replaced starter relay twice . All 3 wire in the plug at top of relay are hot all the time with key on . Tested all safety switches (neutral, sidestand, clutch) and decomp switch and decomp relay and yhe relay behind fuse box they all seemed to test good . I tested on/off switch and start button both are good. I also have current all the way from start button through plug behind headlight then to the ecu when button is pushed . I don't know where to go from here?
Could a stator be an issue of no power at all? I am troubleshooting I have no power. I've replaced the battery, starter solenoid, regulator rectifier, ground wires, checked all fuses and changed all fuses I have a 96 Honda CBR 600. I was driving I got to a red light and it just died. No power at all to lights
I have a 2010 Honda Sabre CS1300. It has an issue starting, even with a new battery it will not crank over enough to start the motor. I have to use a battery charger hooked up to the tender cables to start the bike. I can ride the bike around for 10 minutes but after I turn it off it will not start again.....Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
How about if your starter is turning and there is spark, but it still wouldn't start? I drained my battery trying to start my gl 1800. It stands for awhile and starts again. Buy this problrm keeps occurring. Checked the fuses they are good. Could selonoid do this?
Hi, my bike wont start after a long lay-off. I've checked the battery and it has a good charge, Checked the fuses you mention here and all appear to be ok. But still NOTHING! If you've any idea's? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks
Hi there, I have a question. Sometimes my bike won't start, all I hear is a clicking sound, then I tap it with my hand and sometimes it will start. But sometimes I have to tap/slap it a few more times for it to start. It seems to happen only when it's been sitting around for awhile. For example, when it sits in the garage for one day or when I went to lunch with a friend, a few hours after lunch it won't start. Also, when I put it on the charger it starts right up. Thank you for your advice.
We have a 2005 VTX 1800. It sat for several years. The battery was replaced and the lights came on and the engine turned, but the engine didn't fire. Fresh fuel was in the tank and the kill switch was in the on position. Ideas given that it sat for a few years in a shed? Its was dusty and I don't think it was fired up many years....It was my Dad's and he passed away.
i have a 98 honda shadow that sat for two years before i bought her i did a lot of things new battery new oil and iol filter new starter soilnoid new start switch housing the problem i am having is i can start the bike ride it park it and 2 seconds later it will not start am being told its the recifer on the bike does that sound right

I just purchased a 2002 VTX 1800c. This video will be beneficial in the future if I have any problems. Thanks for making it! :)
This is exactly what i needed! very clear instructions and easy to follow along. Thank you very much!
Thank you for doing these videos . I have a 2004 VTX 1800S and this really helps.
I started with the first problem and vooom thank you sir. Didn’t know I had fuses on that side.

excellent video! thanks for putting in together.
Absolutely GREAT video! Thanks for sharing!
Does this procedures also apply to the 2006 Honda vtx1300r?
From Kevin Hill met up with you into. Fla. Possibly purchasing vtx 1800 I'll be in touch 4/22

Most likely the battery is reading charged, but once you put the load the voltage plummets. You can test it to confirm. Sounds like a new battery is in your future.
Did you ever figure this out? Mine is doing the same thing
Very useful video, thank you
Thank you, komrade. This video helps me good.
This is an excellent video sir, thank you so much.
Awesome thanks for making my life alot easier. Awesome video. Much appreciate
Great videos sir! Very informative!
Thanks, Chris! Appreciate you watching. See you around the comments!
Ha ha
If the solenoid fired off the starter and wouldn't shut off, there could be damage to the starter, what kind of noise did it make?
Partzilla sounded like a pretty loud serpentine belt like the squeak of a loose one
Oh. That doesn't sound good. I would pull the starter and inspect the gears. Power it up and see if it makes the noise out of the unit.
Partzilla i paid $11 for that relay. I'm waiting for a Honda relay. Then I'll put humpty back together. Expect a vid response in
Thank you for the tips Sir! Help a lot!
Thanks you have helped me a lot
Very informative much appreciated !
Thanks, Zytnia! Glad we could help!
Partzilla
whats up man i have a cbr 600 honda f4i i replaced my starter solenoid and still nothing. every time i conmect it with a new fuse my fuse blows out? can u give me any advice?
Partzilla
where are you located bro i would like to bring my motorcycle to you i know its simple stiff but idk what to do.
It's not hard. The throttle cables just need a little slack to pop them out. You'll see once you crack it open.
Do a health test on the battery, not just a voltage test. It's most likely just a bad battery.
Good guide.
BUT this happened to me:
The starter solenoid have 2 nuts for each pole.
I have a 02, 1800vtx. I have a short some where. When I turn the key on the 2nd main fuse blows.
Thanks, the votage is a12.46 when bike is running and drops when the rpm is raised. I check from the battery back. Thanks again.
Something else to consider. Check all your electrical plugs, fuses and connections. If something is loose or has corrosion, it will create a weak or inconsistent connection. Tighten everything down and make sure everything is plugged in tight. Swap out fuses for good measure.
Super good to know I have VTX 1800-C 2006.
I have vtx 2007 1800 neo is don't run for 3 years , I try to many time try to run ..your video give idea I hope I raid again my baby..gracias for the videos
This has been very helpful but for some reason my yellow is switched with the green wire , is that because it’s an S model
ok checked to see if it would start using a jumper wire and it started no lights would this indicate a bad start switch.
very good video, I "liked it". my 2005 Honda Shadow 750 has no power at all. It died on me while riding, and I jump started it with a running car and made it home. All fuses and battery are good. I'd really appreciate any advice you could offer.
If the battery passes a load test, and the fuses are good. Time to start testing your charging system. Stator and regulator.
Thanks for the reply. I will check those next. I had a friend tell me that jumpstarting it may have shorted the wiring harness. What's the likelihood of this?
It is possible, but not common. I would rule out everything else before considering it as the issue.
Thank you for this video.
Does the 1300 have the same fuse location on the left side of the bike?
Any quick fix advice for an oil pressure sensor light? Where is the darn oil pressure sensor?
How about on a 2016 softail deluxe same procedure
i have an 06 vtx 1800F before i came across this video i determined it was the solenoid. there was no power going to the starter. now i got power to the starter but no start. all the test point to the starter. could they both go at the same time?
Thanks for the video, great job. Question? I have a 1300 vtx. About to get into trying to find out why it just decides to shut down while riding for no reason. When it does happen, you need to sit there for awhile to wait to restart. It has gotten really bad to a point where it is just happening a lot and can no longer trust it. Any tips on where I should start looking? I am thinking maybe a fuel relay, or yes even the fuel pump, but not ignoring that it could be wiring in the kill switch / starter. Appreciate any comments please. Thanks a lot.
Hi, Did you get the problem fixed? My 07 has been having the same issue. Thanks
It is the same process for a 2006 Vtx 1300?
Have a 2002 VTX Honda 1800 C with starter problems (won't start) - local dealership charged me just short of $400 to replace starter mag. and try to understand problem - could not fix problem. Can you suggest a great mechanic in the Saint Paul - Minneapolis, Minnesota area that can fix my starter problem with the knowledge of John C?
I have the same bike and great video I subscribed ❤️🏋️
having same issue on my suzuki 1400 intruder,,,procedures similar?
Followed each step and bike turns over but won't start but I do not hear the fuel pump do you have a video of how to check the fuel pump
Will work the same with a 2004 1300C?
Could selonoid do this?
anyone know what kinda handle bars and rises those are on the bike i need to get me something like that
Hi, my bike wont start after a long lay-off. I've checked the battery and it has a good charge, Checked the fuses you mention here and all appear to be ok. But still NOTHING! If you've any idea's? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks
Thank You so much, Great Video !!!
Yellow wires don't have power so what you telling me
Do you have a video that specifically shows how to change the starter
We don't have one right now.
Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on? If not, check the fuses and wiring to the pump. Worst case, it might need a new fuel pump.
i have a 98 honda shadow that sat for two years before i bought her i did a lot of things new battery new oil and iol filter new starter soilnoid new start switch housing the problem i am having is i can start the bike ride it park it and 2 seconds later it will not start am being told its the recifer on the bike does that sound right
