Steelers mock drafts: National pundits too focused on guard as a need, Graham Barton as solution?

  • The Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner, Christopher Carter and Brian Batko react to the week in Steelers mock drafts, specifically numerous projections that GM Omar Khan will select Duke's Graham Barton as his first-round pick because of his versatility to play guard and center. Why are national pundits so focused on guard as a need while James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo are both under contract? What are the chances Barton would play any other position than center here? And hat are the chances we could see the Steelers chase a guard like TCU's Brandon Coleman in the later rounds?
Our duo tackles those questions, then dives into mock draft selections at other positions. Why is so much consensus building around Michigan WR Roman Wilson as a potential Day 2 fit? Is there any chance Penn State OT Olu Fashanu could fall to the Steelers at No. 20? Why are we seeing numerous mock picks for EDGE players like Washington's Bralen Trice even as the Steelers have T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig in the fold? And are the guys interested in secondary options like Auburn's D.J. James, Wake Forest's Caelen Carson, Louisville's Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Utah's Cole Bishop?

Hey guys great job! Smith’s running game hinges off athletic center and if Russ is the QB last years all 22 on him shows he struggled with A gab pressure ! So seems to me center over tackle if it’s not one of the Top guys

Steelers may look to trade back because there will be a top-tier center at the end of the first/beginning of the second round. The Steelers want to move up their second round pick. Cardinals and Green Bay seem to be two teams who might want to move up in the first round and have a second round pick earlier than the Steelers. The question is whether either team will be anxious enough to move up. If there is a run on wide receivers, Arizona may want to move up. The Packers may want to move up to take a tackle or a cornerback. And they have the most picks to play with this year.
Maybe the Steelers trade out of the first round for a second and third round pick, keeping their second round pick. I could see this with Green Bay. 41 is enough to get the guys we want, unless we want a top tier tackle. I do not believe a top tackle will not be available after pick 35. But there will be decent tackle projects throughout the draft.

I love Graham Barton at 1:20. As for tackle being worth more than center, that’s only true if you look at what they get paid, and those salaries are inflated by planet theory rarity. Low supply, high demand, premium price regardless of what they contribute on the field.

If there’s 5-6 guys you like at 20 (OT/C/CB) move down in 1st; and move up in the 2nd. Don’t overdraft at C!

I just don't get this idea of drafting a guard or a tackle in round one. Maybe it's me, bu they need a center. A legitimate center and not someone they think can possibly play center.
How many teams value versatility in their players and just want players who can play one position very good. How many versatility teams won the Superbowl? How many?
The team had better get that center they need, and they had better get the player that won all the center awards in JPJ. Barton or any of the other centers did not beat him out for the award.
The Steelers had opportunities to get centers in the past two or three drafts and how are those centers doing today? The center for the Chiefs even with the questionable injury has a Superbowl under his belt. Heyward has been applying his trade all these years and don't even have one!
Mr. Carter and others seem to echo what other pundits say and try to make it as his own opinion.
The Steelers tried the green experiment and failed. They got Cole who was good initially, but the second year was not very good. Even the Steelers understand that Cole was not the guy and some people (even Carter talk about bringing him back), and I say why?
Go and get JPJ and then get Pearsal two and then go for your right tackle to replace Moore on the right siade or get you D line help.
The Steelers value versatility, yeah, we get it, but versatility does not win titles.
This thing about trading up, trading back, and all that crap does not mean the players you draft will pan out.
If the team passes on JPJ, I guarantee the next team that has an opportunity to draft him at one, will take him! The Steelers had just better hope that JPJ is there at twenty. Playing a player who can switch over in a pinch does not interest me.
You three guys are behind a stinking DESK, and you act as if you know more than anyone else on this site, and I'm here to tell you, YOU ARE NOT!
Get your center team. If he's JPJ, and he's there at twenty, then go and get him!
Creed Humphrey gives you any thoughts man?

Nice to have positional flexibility; but Don’t confuse a rook (DeJean) with learning 3 positions. (CB2/Slot/SS). Greatest impact to this team will be at C.

Every time the Steelers were a championship team they had a hall of fame future center anchoring the line .
Lets see if Omar does his homework n picks Barton or Frazier from WVU

If the Steelers draft a center in the 1st round, they shouldn't waste a pick on tackle in later rounds. This draft is top heavy. After the first 6 (maybe 7) tackles, there's a steep drop off. Whoever is left in the 2nd, 3rd, etc. will not beat out Dan Moore Jr. If needed, we can look for a left tackle in next years draft - I say left tackle, because if Broderick Jones ends up being our right tackle for his two years, then he probably shouldn't be moved.

Enough with the versatility bullshit. Teams don’t draft players in the first round because they can play multiple positions. You find a sixth or seventh O lineman like Spencer Anderson or Herbig that can do that. And drafting a guy who hasn’t played center for the last three years of his college career with the expectation that he’ll be your starting center will be disastrous. See Kendrick Green.

Comparing Barton to Green is absurd. They could not be more different. The only people in the world who utter such nonsense are Steeler fans with PTSD. Literally every national expert, top to bottom and with not a single exception, things Barton can play center, do it immediately, and do it as well as any prospect we’ve seen in years.

@@boletesrule2515 I don’t think they should draft a player who has not been playing center in college and count on him to be their starting center from day one. That’s my opinion. Which is exactly what they did with Kendrick Green and it turned out to be a huge mistake. Thats a fact.
If ALL the experts believe Barton is a slam dunk as the Steelers first round pick, it’s really weird that he wasn’t even in the conversation until the last 10 days or do. But go ahead and prove me wrong with some more name calling.

Draft the best athelete and build.
We don't need another AB or Bell controversy. The last 4-5 years they were a huge distraction that even affected our draft to get young blood to support our older linemen. They cost us an opportunity to make a Superbowl run.
    No. No. No. No. No.
No Ayuk or any problem child from another team for our valuable picks.

Why is he asking about guards and 2025 possible needs when we are focused on this draft and winning now! 🤦🏾‍♂️ and he called it the “national mood” like everyone is thinking of this irrelevant nonsense!
