Avatar The Last Airbender is one of the best cartoons inspired by anime of all time, so Nickeloden and Netflix decided to team up to try and ruin it for making a live action series.
#avatarthelastairbender #netflix #reaction
Honestly, the thing that frustrated me the most is how much they pacified Katara. She had a temper, she’s overbearing and stubborn. Live-action Katara barely emotes. In the full hour of the first episode, she smiles ONCE!
Yeah, they took her independence away. She feels like the random female sidekick now
Same with Sokka. Doesn’t look like he’ll get a good character arc.
There are changes that I like changes that are…interesting. And then there are changes that I straight up dislike! And yes, Katara has a bad time emoting or sounding natural. She sounds like she’s just reading her lines.
you said exactly what i was trying to figure out about what i thought was off about katara’s character in this. i miss her arguing more with sokka or at least being annoyed with him at some parts.
This might be in ties of *"Portraying the original Sokka in the live-action series might be too sexist."* I'm not joking. Also, the show runner said something about *"hoping to appeal to Game of Thrones fans."*
A flawed female character is sexist and we all need to do better.
Zuko’s scar looks more like a bruise than a burn honestly, I think it needs more texture or something
YES! This! I’ve been saying that and no one cares 😂
Scar looks fine to me but it maybe should be a bit larger
How is it possible for yall to be complaining about a Fking burn I feel like all you people do is criticize everything as much as you can you didn’t like the first movie at all now you’re hating on the show
@@elmaschimba963because it looks nothing like a burn? idk what you're mad about
@@elmaschimba963 For everyone who acts like they’re such a fan of ATLA yall sure will just let anything slide because it’s mildly better than the embarrassment of the original live action performance.
Zuko is WAYYYY too chill like bro used to be on demon time what happened to him 😭😭
Aang compliments him once and he's like "I'm protecting this kid forever now"
At least the Firebenders don't need a nearby fireplace as their source of power to draw from instead of themselves.
the movie which shall not be named turned all the firebenders into pyro from xmen lol. which was just wrong
Or the earth benders don't need five to six people to _slowly move a small rock._
God that movie was genuinely bad I genuinely wonder what the hell was the director thinking,,, It’s wayyy worse then DB Evolution
@@yaypeace3792 yeah we dont talk about that
Stop comparing this to the movie that shall not be named. 😢😢😢
Where is Sokka’s boomerang? That was the best character of the original series
it shows up later dw
They would never forget such a pivotal character, the story would fall apart without Sokka's Boomerang.
That’s a bond you can’t break up Sokka and his Boomerang. Their bond is so strong, it transcended life times or at least to a different show “the dragon prince.”
@@bearerofbadnews1375Yeah. Sokka x Boomerang
Yea but it might just be me but it happens on kiyoshi island with the watermelons right it's comes outta nowhere with no explanation@@burgerboss1016
No matter how "good" the adaptation is, it is still a live action adaptation. It will never give me the satisfaction the animated series did
I definitely think that's something most people should realize. There's only so much an adaptation of an original product can do. Personally, I think it's good for what it is. Fuckin leagues ahead of M Night Shyamalan movie too, but I guess that's not a high bar to clear lol
the idea of live adaptations kinda makes me cringe as just a pathetic cashgrab opportunity because they can’t come up with their own money making stories and other peoples creations are the only way to generate hype
I think that's just an excuse for an undercooked fan film with a better budget
@@jrt316I don’t think it’s that bad
Honestly, I think it’s great that a new generation will get to know Avatar with this show and maybe be encouraged to watch the original because of it.
I only started to watch One Piece because of the Netflix series which I also enjoyed.
Yeap, whether it be games or animated shows , live action adaptations will always be vastly inferior to the original works.
Why do they establish that Aang can fly without his glider like Guru Laghima, and then have him fall like he can't fly anymore?
He wasn't flying like the guru, you can see his hands are pointing downward propelling him
Bro literally goes upward
@@Icantthinkofaname267 Firebenders can propel upward too. Doesn't mean they have the same maneuverability as the Guru or Zaheer.
He wasn't flying, he was propeling himself upwards with bending like the firebenders do. AND the kid just literally took a direct fireball hit. He was probably disoriented and fighting to stay concious.
@@marco_voltage i mean he was screaming and reaching for his staff while falling, i dont think he was that disoriented that he wouldnt think of practically flying
If they wanted a dark, gritty political thriller in the Avatar world they could have made a live action Kyoshi show
They basically sidelined Roku in S1 for Kyoshi, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are considering adapting her novels.
Or just make a separate Avatar, we dont need a retelling of Aang's story
They made the mistake of thinking that catering to adults meant the story had to be dark, not insightful. Ironically, this approach ends up making the narrative feel lighter emotionally. When you replace the fun-loving, friendly kid with someone more serious and focused, you lose the weight of their genuine struggle to hold onto their optimism when faced with adversity.
They could have just aged up characters a bit, hired better writers and basically add death and gore to the show. Voila, you have a dark gritty show of the Avatar.
classic modern wokenees destroying quality media because they don't want to step on any toes. The truth is they played it overly safe took no risks made unnecessary changes instead of looking at small critiques of the original show like fleshing out Ozai & Iroh more especially their relationship. And removing shi like the Great Divide.
sokka not being sexist for the first part of the show really is a massive let down
They made a whole big deal about getting rid of it 🙄
@BuilderDragon It really is a "zero media literacy" moment
like having a sexist character isn't pro sexism. It's not something that "didn't age well". It's literally a character flaw that he gets scolded for and has to overcome IN THE ORIGINAL. You took away his one genuine character flaw.
Fr bro sokka's sexism was the reason the world got saved
@@FabbrizioPlays yeah the media was all “lOoK hOw PrOgReSsIvE wE aRe” again without understanding the point.
they bastardized most of the charcters so far. This just didnt need to exist tbh , no one asked for this , a re animated version of the og show (like theyre doing with pre timeskip one piece) wouldve gone alot farther in interest appeal then a mid live action
Keep in mind that the show runner hopes that this appeals to *"Game of Thrones fans"*
There is nothing compared to GoT in the show so idk why they said that, it's more serious yes, but it doesn't come close to GoT. I think it's more of a kid friendly GoT
Because a series that had multiple seasons
@@magnus5747kid friendly got lol people ate burning to death and we just saw genocide unfold in front of our eyes, that's not for kids. Yes, the rest of the show isn't that dark at all, but considering this was the opening everyone who watches would see this
Ah yes, it follows in the footsteps of desperate housewives trying to appeal to starwars fans
@@autumn3686 Still, compared to GoT it's still very kid friendly.
My biggest issue is with iroh I absolutely love the actor who played him but the way they wrote him into the story it doesn’t feel like iroh at all.

My problem is that they show the backstory first cause what made episode 12 so great initially was Aangs mystery so him revealing to Katara his past in real time with the flashbacks made it much more believable that he’s burdened by this. With showing the backstory first I’m at a complete disconnect because it’s stuff that shouldn’t impact me already
I think the producers know that 100% of the audience have already seen the original series
flashbacks tend to not be great as a narrative device when the audience already knows what’s going to happen. It was impactful on the original series because we didn’t know, so I understand why they told the story more linearly
I hate that shows no longer trust the audience to be patient and build curiosity. The cartoon intro says the Avatar disappeared, then we get right into Katara and Sokka finding Aang. That's enough to get us started and the details of how Aang got frozen can be filled in later.
@@JoeFanikthat ain't true this is definitely for people who aren't willing to watch the og show because it's a cartoon
Well said and good point
The live action version feels like an abridged version of the original
Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I compared it to Z and Kai of Dragon Ball.
It literally is lol
So... One Piece Live Action???
Thats good tho
WE didnt need every filler from the first Season to happen in thé live action lmao
More like a parody
I’m kinda disappointed that they allowed Aang to look like he’s flying in the air effortlessly. This was supposed to be a difficult thing to master. Guru Laghima mastered the weightlessness and gained the ability to actually fly. Zaheer eventually gained that ability after letting go of his earthly desires
I will admit, they got the right actor for Aang and Sokka, there were times they sounded exactly like the OG. And I feel like kid me wouldn't mind the CGI.
I think Zuko has a pretty decent voice too
@@skyhorizon6860 Zuko's actor isn't bad, but make-up/CGI for his scar sucks.

Why did they throw all this backstory at the audience in the BEGINNING? The original series was smart to start small with just a few kids, then reveal the mysteries behind Aang's people and how he ended up in the iceberg over time. We get interested in the PROTAGONISTS, instead of being handed a bunch of politics that are basically irrelevant to the audience until later.
I guess but like 99% of the people who are watching this have already seen TLAB cartoon and already know, I think it’s irrelevant tbh
Cause it was trying something different maybe? Not everything works but this wasn’t exactly horrible it’s more plot heavy than before
just like Spider-Man Lotus when it tried adapting "Amazing Spider-Man #248", in the comic Spider-Man spent the entire day with a random kid and revealed his identity to the kid at the end and we fans didnt knew why he did that until the last panel showed Spider-Man leaving a house and turns out the house was actually a cancer clinic, thats great writing but then Spider-Man Lotus just gives the entire backstory of the kid and that the kid is ill so he wants to meet Spider-Man which killed all the suspense
@@andrewgomez9758ues but they didn't make the show for old fans they made it for their modern audience and new generation.....
@@arwinv9005 I guess…? I mean there’s still always the OG you can watch. Everybody knows how critically acclaimed the cartoon is. So like I said 99% of people are gonna watch that first or have already seen it. Besides it’s not like they changed the origin, they just remixed it. Again kind of an irrelevant criticism in my opinion. Plus the way they did it in the live action makes more sense for this adaptation. We see Aang is a little more serious given that we are already shown what he’s been through. In the cartoon we see Aang really lean into being a goofy kid at first which works because he is hiding what he’s been through. He never hid the fact that he ran away in the live action adaptation, which serves this version of his character better. Slight changes but nothing crazy,in the live action you can still tell he is a goofy kid at heart, but it seems he’s more shaken by the gravity of everything earlier on
Live-action remakes of animated shows/movies are almost always a step down.

I do have one major praise for this show. It is absolutely vibrant and alive in a literally grey era of live action TV. Even the One Piece live action adaption had a sepia filter that diluted the color. Live action shows feel muted and dull lately, and seeing all of these character designs in full saturation was absolutely magical. And speaking of character designs...the costume department understood absolutely the assignment. Zuko's scar was really the only negative standout for me. I have stared at the marvel that is Yue's hair for a good 15 minutes just trying to figure out the physics of her wig. I'm obsessed with the wave pattern on Katara's warm outfit. And the Kyoshi warrior headpieces? Absolutely insane quality. Farnaz Khaki-Sadigh, well done.
Not really because why damn near throughout the whole show everyone's clothes stays perfect
@@kidCashOnline The showrunner tells the costume designer what costumes they need for who and when. A costume plot (outfits broken down by scene with detailed illustrations and fabric samples) is made and is approved by the showrunner before they are made. You absolutely NEED to communicate if you need multiple versions of a costume for different shots, otherwise it will not be noted in the costume plot.
TL/DR; It's an oversight on Albert Kim's end rather than Farnaz's.
Weird that you called out Yue's garbage wig as a good point for the costuming when it is by far the worst costuming choice of the show and a terrible wig. The M. Night Yue hair was world better (the only praise I will give that garbage heap)
@@melrenee5416 The M Night Yue wig didn't even have braids on it, and it was flatter than Stanley. I think the Fei Xian Ji section of the NATLA wig could be thinner, sure, but that's about it. I’ll explain the obvious problem as a big fan of the animated version. Aang learns no water bending at all which pushes his character down, Sokka isn’t the warrior he dreams to be and instead wants to focus on being a “mechanist”, Bumi didn’t share any good wisdom with Aang and they made him seem ridiculous even though he’s supposed to be this incredible earth bender. Katara had her lime light and a lot of focus but the show is ATLA not Katara the Water Bender. Badger mole didn’t teach Aang any earth bending and Aang’s innocent crush on Katara isn’t reflected at all. Basically all these themes and character motivations were wiped away. Also, Ozai likes Zuko more than Azula.. he literally burned his face and Azula is Ozai’s favorite. That drives Zuko and shows his father’s ruthlessness. I think the show tries to make the show “modern” this way, by saying look how the first born son gets special treatment, not letting Sokka fill in his role as a leader, and not exemplifying Aang’s water bending skills to not up stage Katara. If this how shows are these days, it’s fine, but I’ll stick to the originals which knew how to make a balance between characters and gave them their proper arcs.
I don’t know if the editor intended this but the edit at 1:51 is really funny to me because there’s a popular fanfic on ao3 where Zuko’s dad is like a five star chef and Zuko wasn’t good enough so he got banished to work at McDonalds

I've said it once and I'll say it again . Avatar The Last Airbender is MEANT FOR ANIMATION! Call me a purist but even the "look" of the show and the bending completely throws me off. Animation as an art form allowed the fantastical element of the show to look natural ,real and unlimited.
For me at least - a big part of why I loved Avatar was not just how amazing the story was- but how BEAUTIFUL the bending looked. This show looks kitschy, weird, and off. Remember boys this ain’t the one piece live action
I just don’t get how they can’t get this right. I’m not even involved in film production or big on tv/movies, but I know how it works essentially.
For example, the scene where aang swoops in to fight Zuko to keep sokka from getting burned.
All he has to do is fly in and fight them, they blast some fire hitting people/houses around him, he stops and says “wait, I’m the one you’re looking for. If I go with you, will you agree to leave the village?” Then leave and say “I’ll be fine” or “thanks sokka, nobody’s every fought for me”
Instead he comes in LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!! You’re the bravest man I’ve ever seen.
I get that he’s what like 11 and a goon but also bruh he’s a monk, he’s at least somewhat stoic and logical.
The amount of cringe lines they ADDED and I’ve only watched half the episodes. Bro the dialogue was ALREADY DONE FOR YOU. If you shoot it and it’s awkward, just change the lines…. Or take the nuclear option and use AI in post to fix them. I don’t understand how the writers got away with this, and nobody from the cast to the set to producers, directors, etc… ever said yeah, this line sucks let’s just grab one from the original.
How do people keep ruining this IP like they had the budget, some nice CGI, but then the flying looks so weird and the acting just needed a few more takes and the writers needed to be fired.
It IS fair to judge the writing because it’s not an unfair comparison to the original. Even if the original didn’t exist the writing is just cringe and so awkward. AND THEY HAD THE ORIGINAL GIVEN TO THEM. It’s like with m night, HOW DO YOU MISPRONOUNCE THE CHARACTERS, ITS FROM A SHOW.

@@magnus5747 sexism wasn’t gone. It was made subtle and realistic. I made this point in multiple platforms and I am happy to give an explanation here if you would like. I don’t blame the fans for thinking this tho, i blame media news outlets and youtubers who make ragebait content talking about that whole thing about sokka and making it a big deal or thinking his character arc is now deleted when that’s not what happened
I literally said the same thing at the same time as Kor 😭 8:17
Zuko’s scar, Sokka’s boomerang, Aang’s staff, and the Southern watertribe village are all the biggest nitpicks I have and I don’t think I’ve watched more than one and a half episodes. My brother and I ended up just binging Arcane and now I want to watch ATLA cartoon.
@10:33 rare Eden moment where he actually have a valid point and Kor and Jack agrees with him!
not valid
Wait, so did they retcon the reason Aang fled? Now, instead of it being a personal failing, he was forced to leave by an attack from the fire nation?
Correct. Cant have flawed characters because that usualy requires competent writers to fix those flaws. Hollywood cant do that anymore so they just remove any negative flaws
Gyatso told Aang he is the avatar and that he would need to manage great responsibility from that point. At night instead of explicitly running away he just says that he needs to go somewhere where things make more sense, implying that instead of running away it was more on the level of just going on a night walk and that he would come back. Then he happens to get caught up in a storm like the original. So, he wasn't forced to leave but it wasn't a personal failing. Just turned into bad timing.
No, he fled because he was scared if the responsibility of being the avatar
@@shadowstar1286 That kind of takes the wind out of a big part of book one, lol.
@@DomR1997 yes it's a subtle difference, as you can see you have another reply that said he fled because he was scared. but in my opinion it wasn't as clear and pushed as it could be. because in the cartoon aang was freakin scared of being taken away and you know for sure he was running away without intent to return. in the live action it just sounds like he wants some alone time and that's it. live action sokka says that the avatar disappeared when the world needed him to make aang feel bad but this doesn't hit the audience because live action aang didn't shirk duty he just wanted to fly a little bit
I liked the show, it was different but had a certain charm.
Yall when he said leave me alone at 12:13 thas in there TWICE😂
At least it doesn’t take half a dozen earthbenders to lift a tiny rock.

7:07 $15 million dollars an episode, and you get this dude.
so glad we could watch you guys roast aang and sokka twice
Atleast the 2010 movie had the decency to only be 2hours long...
This show is so much better
THE SHOW IS 1000 TIMES BETTER
@talkingweevil3172 what show
What really frustrates me about Zuko’s scar is that it’s barely even there. Not only does it just look like a bruise, it’s so small. In the animated show, Zuko’s scar covered almost his entire face. Was the budget not enough to make it bigger? Makes no sense.

@@Zarek-fl5io I only put * at the beginning and end of the sentence, amd it highlighted the entire sentence.
It isn't. I'd give it a solid 7.5. It changed a lot from the animated one but still was enjoyable enough and kept the core story the same

I watch it and it bad
8:50 The Dashie clip had me dying, wondering what people seeing it out of context are thinking
fun drinking game: take a shot every time you hear the intro (no longer) iconic line randomly. with no tension. just to drop the line. hey guys look it’s the line
Live action creators didn't want to copy paste the animated series as it is and few of the plot changes made by them are pretty good and welcoming as well. I did enjoy watching many of the changes (like Azula and Sozin's intro) as they offered different and fresh perspectives.
But it has its own demerits as well:
1) Characterisation is something that was extra ordinary in the OG series (Aang was goofy yet wise and brave but here he is shown to be always frightened and somewhat coward, Katara was passionate, strong willed but here she almost carried the same expression throughout and why on Earth did they tone down Sokka's sarcasm. He was such a lively guy.) Honestly actors playing main characters seriously needs to improve especially Aang and Katara. (PS: Maria Zhang’s acting stood out for me as she portrayed her interest in Sokka quite perfectly. Actors playing Zuko, Iroh and Ozai acted brilliantly as well.)
2) And why is the casting overloaded with Chinese origin actors? The main theme of the original series was peace and harmony between extremely diverse nations. Probably this is why the original creators left this project sighting creative differences.
3) The OG creators had excluded visual references of the genocide against air nomads for a purpose as it was meant to be a kids show. But in netflix without such restrictions they could have explored it much deeper and it would have been fresh for us as well. I was expecting to see more of Aang's past and the wiping out of air nomads. The genocide portion could have been longer considering the effort they had put to show it visually. At least 1 episode dedicated for it would have given ample time for the buildup. However it lasted only for 25 odd minutes so it felt rushed to me.
4) There is no suspense at all in the writing. Everything was just direct and linear.
5) This has very less humour than the animated one.
Comparison with original is inevitable as the bar is set so high that it's very difficult to match those standards. So considering the above mentioned issues, the OG stands miles ahead than this live action at least for me and I wouldn't agree with anyone calling this as better than the original itself..
11:24 then repeats at 12:29 I’m guessing the editor didn’t care and went with both edits lmfao😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
i was gonna say i thought it was a recap for the next episode or smth

They ruined the air temple genocide. The fire nation specifically attacked on the summer solstice for the Sozin's comet power boost. Without that, the air benders look weak and helpless.
What are you talking about? They literally did attack on the day of the comet. It’s the first fucking thing you see in the show.
sozin literally said that on another day they might've been able to fend the fire nation off, but not today
One thing people should keep in mind is this is technically a new show with new writers they need to find their footing, but i will say if they wanted to make a gritty live action ancient times show with mystical elements they shouldve made a new property as thats not what avatar is
14:05 Bro, it actually WAS the wind!
netflix when any animated show is popular: we must make live action and also game of thrones
It was fine. Ya'll expect way too much. Most things will never be as good as the original, so let it be its own thing
But it’s not its own thing though.
@@OakTreeIsaac they are doing some things differently like blending episodes together. Which has been criticised by many people
@@FieldPlug No I know that. It’s just, if really wanted to be its own thing they should stop relying on the fact that the old fans already get the context of the scenes they seen before.
Like what I mean is that this series has an over reliance on breaking the rule of show don’t tell.
To new fans who are being introduced through this probably won’t feel much because they keep having the characters state how they feel instead of showing it through their actions.
Old fans can just fill in the blanks in their heads because they seen the original series, they know how things play out, so they need to be told the same thing again.
But this show is supposed to appeal to newcomers, and instead of finding new ways to show the characters dynamics, they blaze past some of it, expecting you already knew how they feel and how they act from the original.
It’s not bad like you said. But I hesitate to say this can stand on its own legs without the original series in our minds.

The writing is ass😂
Katara was done the dirtiest.

I searched up spilling the milk avatar, and the top 2 results were the movie and this. I couldnt tell the thumbnails apart, thought it was ep 1 and ep 2 😂
Well, I guess it's better than M Nights so.... yay? Also I can't be the only one wondering why Sokka's actor was wearing so much makeup. Looks like he caught a stray from Homer Simpsons makeup gun.
How the living fuck did Netflix EVER think it was a good or cost-effective idea to adapt a show that's as centered around what are essentially magical/superpowers as ATLA into live action?
Moneeehhhh
OMG DID YOU SEE THEY REPLAYED PART OF THEIR REACTION?! SPILINLG THE MILK FELL OFF

They completely ruined Bumis character. How did Sokka and Katara get Appa to fly without saying Yip yip. Why was Katara able to waterbend 400metres in the sky on Appa to stop a fireblast but not able to waterbend a tiny bubble. Why can Aang fly. Why is Katara laughing in the serious scenes. How did Katara learn to Icebend after barely being a waterbender. I'm not even going to finish it past Episode 4. What a joke of a show.
Oof! Yeah: Aang, Katara, and Zuko look rough. Sokka's the only one they managed to get right for me.
When Jack says the names at the end his voice sounds like he's reading a bedtime story to a kid
They fooled us ngl had us thinking this was gonna be good till they starting revealing them ruining characters
All that news was actually fake…
Idk they are pretty consistent imo, yes it is stupid that they removed big flaws of Sokka and Katara but for the rest I don't see what you mean. Aang is still a happy go lucky kid that doesn't want to hurt anyone, Iroh is still the advise giving, tea loving laid back guy, Zuko is still the angsty teen that doesn't even truly know what he wants.
Sokka is still the character from the original but they just removed one flaw (a big one at that) but I wouldn't say it ruined it....
@@magnus5747 sexism is not a BIG flaw. It’s a two episode thing.
As someone who was watched the whole show it was way better than I expected. The show keeps faithful to the original were necessary while also adding great new elements to it that the original series didn't have. I think it's important to remember this is not meant to be a complete replica of the original just an adaptation. There are genuinely things I like better about this series than the original and some things I like in the original but overall I enjoyed the it. I really enjoyed that the tone feels like if the original series didn't have to be made for kids on nickelodeon.
