I was six when I saw this film in theaters and became obsessed with it for years afterward. My parents got me so many of the toys, especially the Hydra which remains one of my favorite Mythic Greek creatures. I drew it countless times.
In my opinion, its animation holds up well specifically BECAUSE the animators wanted it to stand out. It was very deliberately stylized, and they approached it with the goal of creating something both cartoonish & visually stunning.
It's difficult to articulate exactly, but the motion of it gives my brain this feeling of it walking this uncanny line between 2D & 3D. I like that aspect of it partially because it made the monster look scarier to me which benefitted its impact.
Could it have looked better within the film's world in pure 2D? Perhaps, but I don't think it would have been realistic to try that in 1997. Considering how ambitious the film's vision for this monster was, particularly with the amount of heads onscreen at once towards the end, animating it in 2D only would likely have required drastically reducing their number.
This is one main reason I'm glad the animators stuck to their guns. Part of what makes this sequence so memorable is PRECISELY all those heads. It's a defining element of what made the monster so intimidating to me as a viewer.
Since I knew nothing about the mythos on my first watch, I worried how Hercules could possibly win against this seemingly unkillable behemoth. Him fighting inside that mess of giant, bright serpent eyes & snapping teeth terrified me.
Most depictions of the Hydra in books or other media only have it regenerate a few heads. I'm glad this was my first exposure to it because, as far as I'm concerned, Disney's incarnation is far and away the most visually badass.
Then, I got the PC game and was addicted to that for a while (The Hydra boss being my favorite part). I'd sit at my monitor almost every day after school and try to finish it. It was awesome to feel like I was playing through the film.
I loved seeing the cutscenes from the movie, listening to adaptations of the music throughout the levels, and felt like I was on cloud 9 when I finally beat the game. My folks even took me to see Hercules on Ice at the Richmond Coliseum.
For my young self, seeing the Hercules actor's sword cut slime out of the puppet Hydra was epic. On our way out, we got a mug based on the one he drinks from in the movie which I kept & used well into high school until it finally broke.
So yeah, this remains not only one of my top favorite Disney movies but one of my favorite films in general. It kickstarted my interest in Greek Mythology. Hercules, while some criticize him as a bland protagonist, was fun and wholesome.
I wanted to grow up to treat the love of my life (whenever I meet her) with the same love, respect, devotion, and kindness he showed Megara. James Woods as Hades is still one of my favorite villains. Danny DeVito as Phil was hilarious.
Some of my favorite Disney songs are in this. Lastly, as someone who grew up feeling like an outsider in my own ways, I pleasantly related to Hercules' arc of wanting to belong and realizing by the finale that his place was on Earth.
It was with the people who already loved & accepted him. And Meg loved him for who he was, not for his power or fame. He didn't need godhood to become the best version of himself because his greatest strength was his good heart.

Fun Fact: Hercules is actually his Roman name, the Greek version is named Heracles. He was also not born a god but rather a demigod of Zeus (Hera was not his mom) and was made a god so that whole like becoming a hero to win back your godhood thing doesn't exist in Greek Mythology and the Gods can turn anyone into a god for any reason. For example, demigods like Dionysus and Heracles were turned into gods and even Ganymede who was born mortal.

When I was like 11 this movie was on tv while I was at my grandma’s and, I love my grandma so much but goodness! She thought that it was blasphemous and would convince me and other kids to worship idols and false gods and wanted me to turn it off😅 I had to explain to her that this was just about Greek mythology, *inaccurate* Greek mythology, it wasn’t evil, nor was it trying to indoctrinate kids into believing in “false gods.” It was just a kids movie lol She let me watch it still but didn’t keep her eyes off me like she was worried I’d be brainwashed. She probably prayed EXTRA hard for me that night hah
I also explained to her not long ago that a lot of what people think Greek mythology is is actually very biblicized (I’m making that a word now.) Like how Zeus violated MANY women and yet he’s seen as the God of Greek mythology. Hades was actually probably the most sane out of the main 3 and he just got unlucky with watching over the underworld and he only oversees the dead pretty much, AND he had the least toxic marriage of the gods. It’s alright tho since everyone has to start somewhere and she grew up in a very strict Catholic household and is a pretty strict Born-Again
