The way the sheriff constantly gives speeches to the people of tumbleweed makes him seem insane, but then you remember that Dutch was the same. Giving speeches to the gang.
Dutch wasnt exactly right in the head to be fair, guy was delusional
And he went insane. Thanks Micah you fuck!
@@justinbayless8284 He went insane for a lot of reasons other than Micha. It was all the failed heists, Hosea's death, gang members leaving the gang or dying, the idea of moving to Tahiti was getting less and less probable, the Pinkertons breathing down his neck, etc.

I think since there's no railroad near tumbleweed and since there's no ranches nearby, the inhabitants had to steal from each other. As a result the sheriff killed them all with the best intentions.

To elaborate, scalp Hunter as a term for bounty hunters in this area stems from the scalp hunters of the 1850s era, who were often paid bounties for each native scalp they could bring in. The Mexican government paid handsomely for this line of work.

watching all those clips you inserted of the sheriff monologuing like that actually reminded me of Dutch's in-camp behavior throughout rdr2. specifically the superiority complex-esque monologuing to no one in particular, the tone/inflection used with certain words, the seemingly-unflinching-yet-ever-evolving-on-a-passing-whim morals, etc.....idk just kind of got the vibe from it that sociopaths stay sociopaths, even if they both seem like initially polar opposites in every way--and there are A LOT of sociopaths in the world of rdr, lol

I just imagine living in Tumbleweed, going outside to get some water, and just immediately getting berated on a daily basis about the law. I have to imagine that while the citizens of Tumbleweed respect his order, they all make fun of him behind his back.
I remember playing Red Dead Redemption 1 and exploring tumbleweed for hours looking for hidden secrets: trying to find ghosts, trying to find answers. I read the newspapers about the town being haunted, saw the bloody message on the wall of the interior of the church. Examined the emaciated dark horse that spawns there on rare occasion. Watched as thousands of bats flew from the manor in the morning. It's truly a mysterious and chilling location, being in Tumbleweed always felt like I was in someplace iconic and special.
It's been 10 years and I still believe Tumbleweed was abandoned because there is genuinely paranormal activity in Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed is truly haunted, it is either that, or that some horrible creature drove them all away. I will always have a genuine interest in Tumbleweed.
ToadySP you can hear some weird stuff in the basement of the manor

It was all about location. Tumbleweed's location may have offered great security, but left it isolated from everyone else. (IE: No railroads. )
Same with Sheriff Freeman extremely harsh and authoritarian stance on law and order just drove more and more people away.
In another world, Tumbleweed could have survived, but simply became one of countless ghost towns of a forgotten and bygone time instead.
Dutch: I have a plan
Freeman: The Law
here's my theory;
after the little amount of crime around Tumbleweed after bounty hunters assisted the Lawmen & Freeman
(not necessarily the player) the people had rebelled against Freeman for being so controlling. A big gun fight ensued
and with the Town residents outnumbering the Lawman, as well as a few Lawman you betrayed Freeman, the Town was left in ruin. Freeman and those who remained loyal held up in the House on the hill but were quickly overwhelmed
after they were dealt with, the Townsfolk decided to leave Tumbleweed and move to Armadillo and help it get back on it's feet
taking what resources were left after the skirmish
Then about a week or two later the last remaining Del Lobo from Fort Mercer took Tumbleweed but were unable to restore it back to how Freeman kept it
thus passing on the "Curse" from Armadillo to Tumbleweed
Robert Phillips exactly
Setting Sun no when they built the railroad they went past tumbleweed and put it in armadillo
now that's what I call a proper ending, pitty they dont have the balls to put that in the game, might actually make it feel like 1899 instead of 2019
there is onother theory like after you catched those gang mempers the other Del Lobos wanded revenge against the Sherrif and the tumbleweed, and they just raid the town and killed the sherrif and all of them..
I would prefer this one but we all know that it was because of the lack of supplies and manpower coming from trains which led to abondonment but I like ur theory a lot more and would prefer this over the real one
If we’re being realistic, the reason it was abandoned was because of the train not going through it and also the fact that it’s way out in the middle of the desert. Armadillo, has the luxury of being somewhat close to blackwater, and McFarlands Ranch. And also the train lol.
I actually read something in a newspaper (might've been a new hanover paper) early in the story mode about a yellow fever outbreak in tumbleweed, which made more people avoid it. I think that's partially why the railroad and more people avoided the town
Was that Tumbleweed or Armadillo
Oh hey mister a Sheriff, what’s going on toda-

The sheriff is like a reverse Dutch. He obsessed with order, civilization, and the law. Not to mention the similarities he and Dutch share: preaching, having a good shot, and having authority. Dutch's gangs fell and so did tumbleweed.

7:50 "Esteban Cortez, I knew your brother." While it's a pretty obvious nod to "A Quick Favor for an Old Friend" where you're hunting Ramon down with Sadie, I liked that small little dialogue from John a lot.
Anyway, yeah, it definitely seems like a combination of Sheriff Freeman, the train tracks just not going to Tumbleweed, and the cholera outbreak that's heavily implied to have been caused by the Strange Man. I also think that, in theory, the Del Lobos gang probably went back there to get revenge on Sheriff Freeman and kill any residents that deciding against leaving when the town started to decline.
Why was tumbleweed abandoned?
**vivid flashbacks to shooting up the town multiple times**
No reason, _none at all_
I like Sheriff Freeman, because as someone from Oklahoma, he's supposed to be a reference to Bass Reeves.

@Steven Fontaine lmfao
I would have liked to see some of the places in Mexico that were abandoned like most of the region of perdido
ciaran dolan they need to add Mexico in a future dlc
yea I know they've already made most of it already from what I hear not the DLC but the bit of Mexico that was in the first game if you don't already know about it apparently some people were able to break the games boundaries and find Mexico unfinished at least in terms of the towns and buildings makes me think if they do get to a single player dlc with jack it will probably involve the chaos that engulfed the us Mexico border during the latter country's civil war
The reason we can’t explore Mexico in 1907 is because of the border tensions between America and Mexico. Nothing to do with John and the RDR1 storyline. By 1911/1914, the tensions between the 2 countries have calmed down enough to let people enter each other’s country. I also would’ve liked to see the decline of Perdido since there’s only one house in the region that’s completely abandoned, Barranca. If there’s any more abandoned places I forgot, please reply to my comment. I would’ve also like to see the decline of Tesoro Azul, the town near Escalera in Punta Orgullo. Aside from no railroad, the town seemed fine until Reyes’ rebels took refuge in it and got it burnt down.
not entirely true, the Mexican American border in actuality was completely porous until the Mexican revolution. I think people who lived there at the time would have struggled to say there was one. You only would have had occasional army outposts to look out for renegade native bands, and not much else other than some pretty damn seedy border towns. Besides the bandits using common travel routes like skeleton canyon and the renegade apache in the New Mexico bootheel AKA big hatchet country, the only really troubled bit of relations between the two countries governments, not citizens in the 1890s would have been the revolt of the Garzistas. Kind of a small taste of what was to come. Even when the "bandit wars" began the only places that were reliably closed off were at towns on the border and no where else. Border raids back and forth happened repeatedly from 1910 til 1921 hitting a peak from 1914 til 1918. Hope this was a good enough reason.
Rancho polvo is another abandoned settlement in Perdido the name literally means dust ranch. There's a small abandoned dwelling right beside it as well, an abandoned mine to the far south and a series of broken down dwellings around Sepulcro. Some abandoned campsite is also deep within sidewinder gulch.
Honestly, with the way Sheriff Freeman's speeches are, I can't believe the writers managed to stop themselves from working a "I AM the law!" in there somewhere.
5:15 don’t forget that invisible sniper that Arthur has to deal with everytime he sets foot in New Austin
You wanna know something strange about that town. A long time ago I was playing rdr with my friend and we were trying to see one of these ghosts. My friend went in to the manor while I checked out the church (at night of course) upon entering it I saw a black shadow shoot out the back door of the church and at the same time my friend said he could hear whispers in the basement of the manor. After that the server never changed back to day. We played for 4 hours and it was perpetual night on the server we were spooked but also kinda hyped up because we think we caused it or it was just a bug but even if it was a bug its timing was crazy.
Legendary Undead battles at Tumbleweed. It was my favourite battleground for it. There was something in every direction to climb. Biggest map i think, out the 5.
The Lumbago Epidemic of 1908 wiped the prosperous town into a ghostly abyss. Sadly.
The way the Sheriff speaks, just reminds me of Fallout for some reason.

"He can kill you with one shot regardless of how much health you have." well shit mate, that's probably due to the fact that he's using a shotgun. even the Hermit north of Annseburg can one shot you with the same shotgun. there's a reason why law enforcement don't use it in-game and that's because it's too powerful for commonly found NPCs to use for fear of breaking the balance of the game.
Sheriff Freeman must've been doing _something_ right. How many people back then would've accepted a black sheriff?
I mean there were Black U.S. Marshalls at the time. While definitely not a tolerant society back then it is not fully unrealistic to have a black sheriff or other law man.

Many characters in the game say "scalp hunter" even Arthur at one point. I think it's just another name for Bounty Hunter
One thing worth noting - in RDR1, in the church (where also ghost was spotted), there's a writing on the rostrum - "The devil has possessed this beast". Could this point out that Sheriff Freeman became even more ruthless?
Also on the subject - not just the players reported paranormal sightings in Tumbleweed. There's an article in the game saying that visitors in the town claimed they saw ghosts.

Its that the sheriff in the online mode is actually kind of calm and doesnt seem so power hungry but here in 1907 hes gotten rather...aggressive, something is up with him for sure but also the gunsmith is pretty suspicious too because of what the townspeople say about him

The reason why Armadillo is fine in RDR1 is:
the general shop owner
Herbert Moon made a deal with the strange man
It was 3 generations or happiness which can be found in the strange mans shack
He chose 3 generations so the diseases started when his daughter was born
And ended when his grandchild was born
As if you loot him you will find a letter from his daughter letting now that he will meet his grandchild soon
As for the happiness part
Due to the disease no one bought from his shop
And he enjoyed selling stuff
Plus his daughter married a Jew
And he didn’t like Jews
So that’s why there is no curse in RDR1
They tell you why in RDR1.. During the mission titled "Hanging Bonnie MacFarlane", you have a dialogue with the Marshal as you're riding from Armadillo to Tumbleweed where he mentions that it used to be a very busy town until they built the railroad which completely circumvented Tumbleweed. At that point there was no longer a reason for most riders to stop at and/or visit the town any longer, and the town's population slowly began to dwindle until it was eventually taken over by gangs and outlaws..
Edit: if I had listened to the first 0:50 of this video before commenting, I could've saved myself the time of writing this comment lol.

Edit: people already made it, rip
Too slow on the draw
I give you credit for admitting it. Most people would take the credit.
Generic Boi slowest fingers in the West :(
It's literally explained in rdr1 in a main story mission the railroad never went to tumbleweed so it couldn't get supplies in fast enough to support the town let alone expansion so eventually everyone left presumably to armadillo
In the strange man place (where you find his painting) there is a map of armadillo and a writing over it saying "I gave you the choice between happiness or two generations, you made your choice" maybe that how the curse was deflected?
he looks like he could be lil nas’ ancestor
Honestly it does crack me up when John being the epilogue character is seen as a spoiler hahaha
Like 5 years ago when we found out it was a prequel and Arthur was the protag most of us predicted John would be the epilogue character immediately, just like with 1 and Jack
Plus it's not like it spoils anything about Arthur
I know it's just being polite but still
Odin Satanas Yeah I mean I had a feeling Arthur would die it was how that was the question
I disagree, when I first played rdr I played rdr2 and I had no clue there was an epilogue.
I thought this was a creepypasta vid about red dead before clicking on it
I'd like to see a one on one fight between sherif Freeman and Dutch with no rules, that way it can be "the law" vs "the plan"
It feels so weird seeing people in tumbleweed after rdr1
Actually the reason is exposed in RDR1. Old news resurfacing.
Pretty obvious innit? Nah jk, nice video as always M8. The lore behind the game is awesome
What tf does innit mean?
@@Jonas-xl4wg isn't it
Noke thx, the British have a lot of weird terms lol
Creanzey that’s not British British people don’t say mate Australian people do
Probable because I have shot the Sheriff there about three-hundred times.
I’ve played through rdr2 twice, I’m on my third time, and I am so excited to get to the epilogue to go to armadillo and tumbleweed again
If you walk around tumbleweed for long enough you can hear someone say "the laws people break in this town aren't even by the books"
