My theory is that Pleasance was a religious community separate from the local area aside from buying and selling with outsiders. They get hit with some sort of illness. People crowd around religion in bad times so anyone healthy goes to church as much as possible. Desperate for explanation and safety, religious leaders convince everyone over time that those who are ill are somehow impure and need to be dealt with. It works to a fervor on one particular day and everyone goes home and murders their own sick kin in one big bloody night. The dead where loved in spite of what happened and where thus buried with Christian kindness by their families. Remaining people scatter or move elsewhere as a group to avoid arrests or questions.
The only problem with this is if they were the ones who killed and buried them I doubt they would put the cause of death on the headstone. They’d just say passed due to illness or something along those lines. Not horrible violent causes of death
If Pleasance was a similar deal to Limpany, since it took place 16 years prior, it’s possible that it was done before Cornwall had enough resources and experience to be more thorough. Yeah, my personal theory is that the town was stricken with plague, then attacked by a mob. The associations with Satanism are a bit too strong to shrug off IMO, but it doesn't ultimately matter whether they actually were doing anything or not. I think everyone thought they were, since they were a very small, new town, and saw the plague as a sign from god proving their suspicions. This, along with the general negative sentiment to outsiders in lemoyne, ultimately led a mob to destroy the town. Whether the mob was townspeople, the Raiders, or some other group, it doesn't really matter. But, I think the Cornwall had some small hand in it, whether by providing fuel for the fires, posting the law to look the other way, or stirring up the people, he probably was involved. But it doesn't seem like he would ultimately care enough to make his goons dig graves or cover it up that well. But, I bet that if a mob had done it, they would be more likely to bury the children and a few victims, since this would have been a subwoofer religious mob.

Helltown is a crazy theory that I’ve never heard, and the snake thing def feels a little too obscure for that NOT to be true, but i liked to believe that it was a nod to Undead Nightmare- and all the buried “people” actually went all zombie mode and it was the people of pleasance who were forced to kill them.
i like to think that those graves occupy those who were killed by other members of Pleasance due to illness; since some of them are kids, it could be seen as trying to spare them from sickness, while adults were boarded up in the church and the house.
An ohioan here, i actually visited Helltown quite a few times and spent a lot of time around Boston. My grandpa always told me about the ghost bus and called it the "ghoul bus." Love hearing about one of my favorite spooky roaming grounds from one of my favorite youtubers.
So the barn having the words "Stay out, Plague" on it is most definetly a reference to TWD. Mostly for two reasons. The first being that in hte very first episode, when Rick wakes up from his coma, he see's a door in the hospital that says "Stay out, dead inside." The second, and probably the more well known one, is that in the second season. A character named Herschel doesn't think that the zombies are truly dead. He at first thinks they are curable and simply sick, like with a plague. He and his farmhands find zombies, or walkers, and throw them in the barn and try to find a cure for the zombies. Of course, the group finds out about the barn and kills all the zombies, though it is a cool reference.
Theory: what if the "plague" was rabies? The town has a potluck for some reason.... first birth in the town, wedding, birthday, whatever. And someone accidentally brought a tainted dish that the majority of the town ate. The rabies would sweep through like a plague and because at that time it wasn't treatable the townspeople that *didn't* get sick had to mercy kill those that did in self-defense. That would help explain why some were shot and others stabbed. The house with the "unclean sinners" and "ill with sin" signs could have been the ones that brought the dish and the barn was where they were stashing the infected until they could be dealt with or just left to die however.
Maybe they enjoyed really really fresh deer toungues? Anyway yeah not how rabies spreads and even if it was humans typically get "dumb" rabies not violent rabies, which doesn't actually make you violent it- You know what never mind.
Could you do some videos about the backstory and major events of the towns in rdr2? Also, about Lagras and why the inhabitants live there even though they show such fear of the night folk as well as the crocodiles. Also, I think the backstory of Colter would be pretty interesting
Considering that the Strange Man (in game Strange Man) basically lives almost on the other side of the swampy lake. And the the word plague is written, SM has over looked the town and made a judgement of some sort. Think about it, which town is in RDR2 plagued and connected to SM, yes Armadillo. I think that Strange Man had offered some of the same offerings he offers to Herbert Moon, to the a family of Pleasance. But they refused the offer and got the plague, further more after the family’s plague death, the people started to targeting the strange man, who then made his accountants, and suddenly horsemen of apocalypse arrives, murdering the rest of the townsmen.
I think something to keep in mind is that multiple theories can be true at the same time. For example, Pleasance could be modelled after Helltown aesthetic-wise, and be the story a plague wiping out a small town lore-wise. Personally, I think that's the case here, and I think the multiple deaths on one day are the result of people driven mad by grief and fear killing their loved ones out of desperation.
One mystery I always found quite odd was what happened to the wapiti tribe. And the relationship between Molly and Dutch. It's obvious she loved him but Dutch wasn't interested. I wanna know what was her driving force into telling on him and why she did it
It's great you are revisiting RDR2. I actually am replying story mode for the first time in over a year so these are really good to refresh myself with this huge world.
I literally starting watching your rdr2 videos again yesterday and been falling down the rabbit hole of watching a lot of them. So this is actually a suprise to see just now
I think the Cornwall kerosene and tar barrels weren't left out of laziness or a lack of belief people would come after him for his crimes- I think they were left as calling cards, I think he is absolutely undeterred by the thought of people coming after him for vengeance. I think he's proud and wants people to know how ruthless he is (as shown by the very public shootout against the gang in the story of the game)
I feel like the writing on the building might have a been a callback by Rockstar to Blackwater in Undead Nightmare with building being boarded up with hate filled or hopeless messages on the walls.
What if it were skinner brothers? In RDO you can encounter some of them in Pleasance. And it’s mentioned by Charles that the Skinners move around. Maybe in 1883 they were in Lemoyne and saw a easy target in a small town, would explain the deaths as they use various weapons, and the way they look is disgusting

Hey fizhy there is a mystery I have wondered about but haven’t seen anyone make a video on before. The diary in Compton’s stead mentions a runaway slave and escaped past Rhodes. There is a shack south of Rhodes that contains chains, a hidden photo of a black family and I think a capture request for a slave issued by the ascension plantation (Shady Belle). And there can be found a dead slave with neck brace along one of the beaches. I think these 3 things are related, that a slave of Shady Belle escaped and I think Compson was requested to capture the slave by the owner of shady belle. I think compson held the escaped slave in the shack and the slave hid his family photo there, eventually I think that slave escaped again and died along the beach
Fizhy, you’ve been on a damn good roll for the last few weeks dude!!! Thanks for putting in the hard work so we can get great content all the time dude; I really mean that. Ruyard kipling wrote the Jungle book in 1894/95, 4 to 5 years before the event of the game take place. In the stories of the jungle book, Mowgli, a young boy is raised by wolves. At some point in the book he encounters a large snake called Kaa. In the Disney depiction of the story, he wraps himself around mowgli and hypnotises him so that he can strangle the boy and eat him. There's a wolfman/feral man in the roanoake valley area, who is protected by a pack of wolves, that mostlikely see him as family, or a cub. These little bits of lore in the game, the wolfman/feral man and an abnormal snake sound vaguely and loosely like the events that occur in the Jungle book
More points that reinforce the Helltown theory: one of the most famous buildings from Helltown (and one of the few left standing today) is the barn, which looks fairly similar to the one in game. It was closed up for the longest time but has recently been opened. Also, the government purposefully burned down a few of the buildings in order to demolish them
@@lullaby.for.arsonists7329 They took down the rest of the houses and whatnot in 2016, and the school bus has been gone for a while. Iirc, all that remains of note is the abandoned barn and church (which isn’t even the upside down cross church, that one is still in use.) There’s not much to see anymore. Little known fact: as it turns out, the government actually didn’t legally use eminent domain, and the residents were allowed to buy back their properties, but at that point they were already burned down. So basically, the government illegally kicked them out, burned their shit down, and told them they could buy their land back.
I'm so glad you're re-visiting a bunch of these mysteries, the older videos were good but felt rushed. love the RDR2 deep dives. also, fun fact about Cholera, it's treated by giving the patient rest & clean drinking water if Pleasance was a Cholera camp everyone who died there would have had to contract the disease in the same day that patient zero did for them to all die at the same time. good theory but Idk how accurate it is.
I think this was a typical outbreak before science was popular. 1)-Outbreak begins. 2)-They have no idea what to do. 3)-Once outbreak becomes dire, someone will say "God is punishing us!" 4)-They start hunting for sinners and witches. 5)-Everyone dies. It would explain the word "Sinner" written on the wall.
I JUST picked up red dead again knowing that nothing new will be coming (RIP) but these are really nice to listen to now that ive been playing again. Thank you for your hard work!
I noticed a few months ago that the serial killer, Edmund Lawry jr, or something like that, used the same white paint at his murder sites as whoever wrote on the barn in Pleasance. Dont really know what to gather from this, and it is probably just a coincidence, but it gives me theories.
So this one is out of left field but hear me out. Lemoyne is in the Deep South, post civil war, with the klan and the Lemoyne raiders roving. The klan is basically inept so that leaves the raiders. Perhaps klan or raider activity forced a community of blacks out and into the area. In real life, the klan did use terror tactics for various reasons on anyone who wasn’t WASP after the civil war. What if this is why Pleasance was founded? To get away from those guys and have a pleasant life away from them, hence the relative remoteness near the bayou. But as we see in the game, the klan is totally inept. But the lemoyne raiders aren’t (totally). Being it’s post civil war south and the raiders are either ex-confederate soldiers, or people duped into believing their cause, they could have attacked during the plague. It’s not the best theory, I know. But there are those facts, and the fact that we don’t know who settled Pleasance. Maybe it was settled for religious reasons, or perhaps to avoid racial persecution. But given the setting and the existence of the raiders, along with the idea of a plague or cholera epidemic, there is a probability this could have happened. But given that, the Cromwell theory you put up is really solid too. I just wanted to look at the idea of it being a local group that’s known to terrorize people in 1899 and has been around for the past 30 years or so in game.
I think it's a weathervane, but the metal pole on the Pleasance church roof has a design that to my mind resembles the Pagan symbology you touched on in your recent video on The Night Folk. Since there's a Pagan symbol painted on a tree nearby in the swamplands, maybe they practiced Paganism and that was seen as Satanism by other surrounding Christian communities. Maybe Pleasance is linked to the Night Folk & Paganism theory you had. Who knows.
My theory is that pleasance is just like Armadillo, where it was struck by a mysterious illness (like the plague) where it was killing people. Then it was struck by a disaster where people became crazy and started to kill each other. I think something like the strange man may have even played a roll in the demise of Pleasance just like Armadillo (maybe).
I believe either the Grays or the Braithwaites massacred the town, and then covered it up to avoid any backlash. With the moonshine bottles, it's likely that the Braithwaites murdered the town and the house was a rival moonshiner business. After the massacre, there was one or two survivors who either were not in town at the time or escaped as the killers rode in. This is why there are graves. The bodies were retrieved from the barn and buried. Why? Either a rival moonshiner business was underway in the town or the Grays and Braithwaites had defectors, which led to the massacre, as the families will not hesitate to kill their own
RDR2 holds up so well, I'd say arguably it has more impact on the standard of stories in video games in particular then any other game in its' generation. Too bad the multiplayer never met the same potential as the single player did.
I think it was a bit of a Jonestown situation. Super religious, isolated, lots dying in one year. Maybe some drank the *1883 equivalent* of flavour aid?
My theory is that a plague came to Pleasance and the plague turned them into the night folk. And they soon expanded into the army of night folk we know today. And the ones that died either killed each other with the influence of the plague.
To find out more about it you actually need to go Google Hell's town Ohio pleasance is actually based off it it's One of the most haunted places in America
I wonder if the survivors of pleasance (and their children) became the night folk. Also the strange man used cholera in Armadillo, right? It wouldn't surprise me if he had something to do with the town's demise.
Fizhy I doubt your see this but I want to thank you for pointing out the difference between satanists and devil worshippers a lot of people don't know it but there's a massive difference as a Satanist myself I greatly appreciate that love you video man I can't wait to see more
Peace and love brother. I'm a Pagan, but I've got respect for satanists and their ways. Hell, I know a few satanists that are all around nicer people than some Christians.
In addition, IIRC, the Aberdeens preyed on visitors to their home, drugging them and then killing them. I don't see either of them leaving their home to kill others in another town, and risk getting the plague that destroyed Pleasance.
Strange Man (a youtuber) has made a video where he explains the mystery. As I see it he is right about it since he has been thinking through it. Pleasance was a town whose residents were in fact satanists and were murdered by an angry mob of people who feared and hated them due to that fact. The messages written on the barn and the other house were left by them as a warning to other people. The word "plague" seems to be what's confuses so many people, but it's to be taken literally but is a metaphor for an unclean, evil place which everyone should avoid.
My headcannon: Pleasance was founded by a religious group, hoping to build a peaceful and polite community, However it was built on a crossroads. Industry, commerce, and the locals didnt accept this new upstart. After only a few months, the people there are finding themselves burdened with illness, perhaps they were just adjusting to a new climate. What they eventually realized was that the water is diseased (maybe even poisoned by cornwall). the people seek out ways to treat it: prayer, tonics and alcohol. the first would prove ineffective, the second may have helped but was expensive, and the third helped but caused some rowdy behavior in a community built to be pure. Moonshine caused people to become drunk, acting in impolite ways which started devil worship rumors. The moonshine drinkers would be harassed by the other two groups, until some of them snapped, and a massacre occurred. Some were murdered, others executed in other ways. Those responsible either fled, or faced retribution by the survivors. The "plague" wasnt just a disease, it was considered a plague of sin, debauchery turned to murder. The murdered (seen as innocent loved ones) were buried properly, the perpetrators were disposed of in the barn, where their remains were marked as if they still carried sickness, so that regular society would continue to refuse them proper burial. if any of the wealthy members survived the massacre, it is unlikely they would have stayed, leaving behind only the sick ones who used prayer as their means of survival. meaning either the town slowly emptied, or people fled to escape the tragic memory of the massacre. The town remains abandoned, with cornwall having forgotten about it, or no longer needing the land... and because it was there for such a short time, few people even remember its there, and only rumors of what happened remain.
Maybe some outside group and a few from the town tried to kill the townsfolk to stop the sickness then the town only had knives so they defended themselves ended up winning the fight and then buried their own (including the ones who turned on them explaining why they buried the ones who got stabbed). Then all the survivors felt the place was a little depressing after all their friends died so they just left

Red dead is a timeless classic with endless things to find
Fizhy and StrangeMan, my two favorite channels for deep RDR2 dives.
I agree with the idea Plesence had the misfortune of an outbreak of some kind which drew the attention of Cornwall who used it to cover up a massacre
I had this theory since I started playing! Glad I’m
Not the only one thinking about the TWD reference. 🫶🏽
Don't dead, open inside
Theory: what if the "plague" was rabies? The town has a potluck for some reason.... first birth in the town, wedding, birthday, whatever. And someone accidentally brought a tainted dish that the majority of the town ate. The rabies would sweep through like a plague and because at that time it wasn't treatable the townspeople that *didn't* get sick had to mercy kill those that did in self-defense. That would help explain why some were shot and others stabbed. The house with the "unclean sinners" and "ill with sin" signs could have been the ones that brought the dish and the barn was where they were stashing the infected until they could be dealt with or just left to die however.
but that’s not how rabies spreads 😅
Maybe they enjoyed really really fresh deer toungues? Anyway yeah not how rabies spreads and even if it was humans typically get "dumb" rabies not violent rabies, which doesn't actually make you violent it-
You know what never mind.
what a fun unique twist on how getting rabies works
Umm… it takes a while for rabies to appear in a person, and it spreads through body fluids and saliva
Zombieeees.
I wanna know what was her driving force into telling on him and why she did it
She didn't tell on him
She didn't snich she was drunk and upset so she said that to annoy him mad not knowing the consequences
And the wapiti tribe wre pushed out of America into Canada like all native tribes
@@harris510. no they met her a few times
She lied while drunk in the heat of the moment to try and get some sort of reaction out of Dutch, but didn't consider how people would react.
9:00 "however there's a giant snak... Ahh fu..."
Really took me off guard lol
That random animal attack made me drop my phone 🤣 Another entertaining video, thank you.
Please keep making red dead lore videos I’ve watched all of em a few times now! Top shelf content my dude appreciate it
I love that you've started doing Red Dead material right as I'm replaying RDR2.
Thank you for the red dead content; I’m super late to the party because I only started playing a few months ago and it’s cool that people still talk about it
Really enjoying these revisit rdr2 videos! Brings me back to when I first found your channel and binged all your rdr2 videos
@@Fizhy moar rdr2 >:)
I remember watching the original video and I'll tell you this one makes me excited for the possibility of a whole revisited series
These videos are really well done. I honestly enjoy retreading old locations with new info we may have now especially since red dead is going through a dry spell content wise
I'm so glad you referenced the strange man in this video his video on this topic was so good and I couldn't wait to see if you were going to touch on his theory... both of your channels are great
Please never stop the red dead videos you’re the man Fizhy!
Like always good job can't imagine how long it takes to do research and get info on things. Ready for the next one
Thank you for re visiting this one Fizhy! As my comment when I said strange man did a full version I wasn't trying to say your channel was a bad one! A few years back.
years old game yet still so many easter eggs thanks for covering this again
Please keep revisiting old subjects!
I'll do so if the topic's previous coverage permits, from my angle - if I think I handled it well the first time I'd rather not confuse that, however if some aren't as good as I wanted them to be they'll be on the list.
Also there’s this insanely creepy glitch that occurs when you encounter Agnes Dowd. If you haven’t heard about it I can post some videos and posts, but I’m guessing you already know about it lool. It’s really really creepy and maybe you could look into it and find out how to trigger it and what exactly is happening.
I’m here for these red dead videos. I kinda don’t want them to end even though I know they have to.
found this heavenly channel high the other day after a huge rdr2 grind, and im HOOKED bru, i see a video recommended and i click.. im a simple man.
Another amazing video 👍
The Aberdeen Pig Farm mass grave was probably the residents of Pleasance buried by the people living at the Aberdeen Pig Farm
Working on my 3rd play through & I never noted the gravestone markings & have never seen the dead python. You come out with some great stuff, Fizhy. Always entertaining, except when your runnin' your horse into trees & fences or shooting chickens. 😆
I love that fizhy is revisiting these video topics about a game that’s nearly (red) dead
we need more red dead high quality content creators, keep it up even if it’s just a silly lil play through… i love you british boy 🙏🏾
Fantastic and enjoyable content as always mate!
Dudeeee I love listening to these videos as I’m drifiting In and out of sleep and the thing at 8:59 scared the hell outta of me😂
More points that reinforce the Helltown theory: one of the most famous buildings from Helltown (and one of the few left standing today) is the barn, which looks fairly similar to the one in game. It was closed up for the longest time but has recently been opened. Also, the government purposefully burned down a few of the buildings in order to demolish them
Fr? Been wanting to visit for awhile but I feel like it'll be all gone by the time I get the chance
I really hope you continue to make red dead videos, they are part of the reason I love your channel and subbed in the first place.
Look up Cholera, rest and good drinking water was moot.
Cholera was a death sentence.
I think this was a typical outbreak before science was popular.
1)-Outbreak begins.
2)-They have no idea what to do.
3)-Once outbreak becomes dire, someone will say "God is punishing us!"
4)-They start hunting for sinners and witches.
5)-Everyone dies.
It would explain the word "Sinner" written on the wall.
Exactly
What about the big ass snake
this was a really well made video Fizhy, thank you for filling the RDR community with amazing content and keep up the great work! i hope you are well
9:00 I love it when as soon as you say that a panther just attacks you lol
4:11 *Arthur controlled by a player who's doing an evil playthrough laughs maniacally*
I JUST picked up red dead again knowing that nothing new will be coming (RIP) but these are really nice to listen to now that ive been playing again. Thank you for your hard work!
This man just always delivers!
I noticed a few months ago that the serial killer, Edmund Lawry jr, or something like that, used the same white paint at his murder sites as whoever wrote on the barn in Pleasance. Dont really know what to gather from this, and it is probably just a coincidence, but it gives me theories.
9:02 Am I the only person who was freaked out??!??
I love when people think upside down crosses = satanism. The upside down cross is just another kind of Christianity
I love how strange man is a mostly reliable source when it comes to red dead redemption 2 and red dead redemption 1 mysteries and theories
It was Gavin
That God damn bastard
Fact
Thank you so much for covering this 😭👌🏼
I think it's a weathervane, but the metal pole on the Pleasance church roof has a design that to my mind resembles the Pagan symbology you touched on in your recent video on The Night Folk.
So many mysteries gotta love em
RDR 2010 had a fun multi-player. Maybe standards have changed since then? Don't know if it would hold up today.
Another great video . I always come back for your RdR videos. They are the best .
I think it was a bit of a Jonestown situation. Super religious, isolated, lots dying in one year. Maybe some drank the *1883 equivalent* of flavour aid?
True, but what is flavour aid? Wasn't it Kool-Aid??
@@caledonianamerican41 Nope, it cyanide laced Flavor Aid which is a knock off brand of Kool-Aid
@@christopherholt6930 Oh alright
My theory is that a plague came to Pleasance and the plague turned them into the night folk. And they soon expanded into the army of night folk we know today. And the ones that died either killed each other with the influence of the plague.
To find out more about it you actually need to go Google Hell's town Ohio pleasance is actually based off it it's One of the most haunted places in America
I love these videos. Made me restart the story for a more I’m depth play experience.
I wonder if the survivors of pleasance (and their children) became the night folk.
Also the strange man used cholera in Armadillo, right? It wouldn't surprise me if he had something to do with the town's demise.
Ooh I like this theory!
Haven't actually played this game in a couple years, love these videos though. Completed the story when it came out.. Feeling like starting again!
Im so glad you mentioned strange man. His videos are absolutely brilliant and underrated
In addition, IIRC, the Aberdeens preyed on visitors to their home, drugging them and then killing them. I don't see either of them leaving their home to kill others in another town, and risk getting the plague that destroyed Pleasance.

"However there is a giant snake- aH-"
Cool as a pickle man lmao
Strange Man (a youtuber) has made a video where he explains the mystery. As I see it he is right about it since he has been thinking through it. Pleasance was a town whose residents were in fact satanists and were murdered by an angry mob of people who feared and hated them due to that fact. The messages written on the barn and the other house were left by them as a warning to other people. The word "plague" seems to be what's confuses so many people, but it's to be taken literally but is a metaphor for an unclean, evil place which everyone should avoid.
as long as you make rdr videos ima stay watching u do it like no other
God that cougar scared me @8:55 “however there is a giant snake AHHHHH” 😂
Great video. Loving these mysteries revisited.
My headcannon:
Pleasance was founded by a religious group, hoping to build a peaceful and polite community, However it was built on a crossroads.
Sometimes I forget youre talking about a game and get afraid 🙃 good videos ❤️
Maybe some outside group and a few from the town tried to kill the townsfolk to stop the sickness then the town only had knives so they defended themselves ended up winning the fight and then buried their own (including the ones who turned on them explaining why they buried the ones who got stabbed). Then all the survivors felt the place was a little depressing after all their friends died so they just left
Great job on this video! I truly appreciate all your hard work that went into it.
Your videos are the reason I started replaying Red Dead Redemption 2
That attack actually made me jump for some reason. Nice.
