For some reason there's some very mild digitized distortion in my voice over audio in the second half of the video. I have no clue what caused it, as it's not in the actual recording, nor is it in any of the videos I made after this one. So we're just gonna have to deal I guess.
Also, normally I'd be doing Thortober (the spooky month) right about now, but I'm moving that on to next month. So get HYEP for Thorvember!

There actually was an explanation for Cloud acting depressed and everything being the way it is in Advent Children, but the problem is Square Enix thought it would be a better idea to put all of this info in a FUCKING LIGHT NOVEL! The book is called "On The Way To A Smile" and it's a hell of a lot better than the movie. You can find a translated and voice acted version of it on a RUclips Channel called The Lifestream.

    • @Sawngawkuh

That's what really, really hurt the film most of all. Leaving Cloud's descent into depression into supplementary material and leaving us to just watch him mope about in the aftermath of it all, basically putting us through an extended as hell heroic BSOD moment.
The film has other issues too, though. The action scenes lack tension and feel padded (sorta similar to the Star Wars prequels' execution of their fight scenes) and the Geostigma sub-plot is settled with a deus ex machina rather than feeling earned. Fans try to cover it up and say Sephy was blocking Aerith, but the fact remains she could heal Cloud BEFORE Sephy even reemerged just yet, so there's no excuse why she couldn't at least help Cloud.

Square still hasn't learned from this god awful mistake, they have made it worse. With FF15 you have to watch an anime, a movie and 3 seperate dlc packs. FF13 required a fuck ton of reading and buying just to understand what was happening and still didn't make any sense. I honestly don't mind them putting information in an anime format because a Final Fantasy anime sounds badass and it's easier to get a hold thanks to quick translations, but packaging it into a book that GOD KNOWS how long to translate and ship out is stupid!

@1:23 "both having done only minor directing jobs" Kitase directed Final Fantasies VII, VIII, and X, and codirected VI and Chrono Trigger. I don't think I'd call any of those minor, since the guy had a bigger hand in steering the PS1 era of the franchise than the Gooch himself, who spent much of that period preoccupied with making The Spirits Within. The statement's true of Tabata, though.

As much as Squeenix loves making mobile games and porting older games to iOS and Android, it's kind of surprising that they haven't tried to update and port Before Crisis. I always really liked the Turks, even in Advent Children.

You have a great appreciation for aesethics and style that I don't hear from other RUclipsrs. The way you describe the city in this movie is dead on. I love the Nomura rips as always and adding Tabata into the mix was an added bonus. I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on Final Fantasy Versus XIII and how Nomura' s original vision was shit on in the finished XV product.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  6 лет назад +3

Thanks dude! I remember thinking FF Versus XIII looked really cool, and that one gameplay trailer thingy, where you see Noctis and not-Lunafreya in a type of fancy looking ball room type place, well I dug that vision. I fuxed with it. Can't really say if it would've been any better or worse then what we ended up getting though. As Advent Children shows, pretty much everything Nomura touches looks cool, but it remains to be seen if the story and/or gameplay can live up to it. I might have liked Versus 13 more then FFXV, as I prefer more urban environments, and where Insomnia did make it into FFXV, I can't image it was supposed to be as minor of a feature as it was, but again, no real way of knowing for sure. As it is though, I liked FFXV regardless. And we aren't exactly short on Nomura designed games either.

Say what you will about the plot of advent children, it looks and feels like no other movie. There’s a feel to the lighter than air combat and how characters accelerate and decelerate. It’s totally unnatural but some idea of real physics informs how the characters move, like crouching tiger hidden dragon. I still sometimes think about how tifa landed on that one wall.

I've always loved this movie genuinely, and I think some aspects are given shit in a bit of a... Dramatic way.
I think Cloud should be given alot less flack, especially considering the WHOLE situation of the world, and his own issues together. In terms of the world, it entered a near apocalypse and barely survived with now a plague going around and killing people off, poverty is rampant when the economy pretty much died off, and Midgar is in ruins with a new city outside as the only place to live it seems, and it's all downright depressing. The whole point of the film is that this is a world that just got worse and worse as it went on and nothing really got so much better. In the case of Cloud personally... Fuck... The man suffered an identity crisis in the original game and the core of it starting in Crisis Core with Zack's death, his dying wishes, and the trauma that started his identity issues in the main game itself. So once the game itself started, he thinks he's this bad ass Solider First Class from Shinra originally, but as he goes on, that is broken down on him, and Aerith is flat out killed on him too, near when his reality breaks down in full. The amount of grief he probably had from especially remembering his friend Zack, who he's shown to have been a genuine friend with in Crisis Core in such a human way that comes off not at all forced if you ask me and rather natural, combine that with remembering his death, that ESPECIALLY with the incident included in his home village being burned and Sephiroth going rogue that day starting the WHOLE issue way past Shinra being so scummy to begin with. When you step back and you even consider this from the standpoint of being in his shoes and boiling it down to reality logic, who the fuck wouldn't be just emotionally scared as all hell?? He didn't even get a chance to really react to it very long in the game, he had to man up in the moment and do what he needed to do to save the planet from the end of it all, and now in Advent Children he is with this plague that has engulfed alot of the population and taken many lives already. It's by cruel fate, that the plague is tied to the lab experiment gone wrong that is the core of his entire trauma, he's absolutely FUCKED. It's a fucking miracle he doesn't just break down and cry at everything he experienced since the core of the whole crisis itself, and the whole point of the film is him finally confronting his trauma head on, the final words between Cloud and Sephiroth represent this perfectly.
Cloud: "Stay where you belong, in my memories."
Sephiroth: "I will... Never be a memory."
And in many ways that may also reflect on the PTSD as a whole, it's memories are still going to forever be there, he may try to push past it all his life if he must, but the core of that PTSD will forever be there as much more than just some memory from the past, hence why I think the dialog represents this well. Sure, I won't claim its all perfect per say, but holy shit is it no where near as bad as most talk it upto being I think.
I don't even think Crisis Core is all that bad, sure it's awkward to have a celebrity face as a villain, but I didn't know that first time I played it and it was fine with me, why would Shinra stop with one lab experiment when they're morally bankrupt anyways? All this combined makes these 2 games and this film a very strong story when you take it all in like that, it expands and makes it clear how fucked up the Shinra corporation is, and Cloud is just a fucking human being that experiences trauma and what it does to his memories and emotions, eventually trying to leave it behind after it had almost eaten him alive in the form of a plague, along with battling the depression everyone dealt with in a post apocalyptic world, and soon choosing to face it all head on and put it to rest with also a more hopeful tone at the end of this film, along with Zack's Buster Sword cleaned and in Aerith's Church. I guess you could also look at that as the past being dealt with in a much healthier way with how it's presented at the end.

If you were 16 or older when you played FF7, you had no problem following Advent Children and loving it. If you watched it when you were 9 and were confused, you'll prolly stay confused. Cloud and co. saved everything. But people still died because of him. He chose to undertake stopping Seph, using an ego that wasn't even his. It was copy pasted from Zach. So if he goes off trying to be a hero again.......and if one of those kids gets killed because of it......it's a bit heavy. He has to gain enough confidence to override that fear. Tifa tries to do this because she's trying to make them a "real" family that can rely on each other.
Geostigma was always Alien planet DNA infecting Earth planet DNA. All life comes from the lifestream. If it gets corrupted at the source, the corruption affects the end products too. Humans. The geostigma is grotesque on normal humans. The Gray kids are mostly Alien DNA lifestream. They are a product of the corruption in the lifestream. They identify as the remnants of Genovas DNA. They have a connection straight to the Genova/Sephy corruption in the lifestream. And they want to the original DNA of Genova to become complete. Having the "complete" Genova DNA will allow the corruption to express itself as a full fledged Genova/Sephy through the Gray kids.

I imagine that, gameplay-wise, it'll be decent (although it's unfortunate that the turn-based fans are getting screwed with the action-based focus), but hopefully we don't see Cloud's characterization be revised to be more in line with how he behaves in a lot of later works for the sake of pandering to the teen demographic. The glimmer of hope in that is that SE has been trying to steer a bit more away from that in more recent works like World of FF and the new Dissidia, so hopefully that bleeds into the remake.

Wasn't a great film at all, wasn't a good film to critics - but was a good film to the fanbase

At the end of FFVII the original game,in the aftercredits if you listen closely there are three creepy kid voices(One laughing maniacally, one sobbing and the third barely audible just in case you have any doubts who those three grow up to be)coming from the Northern Crater. Also, the reason Aerith couldn`t stop Sephiroth anytime she wanted was because Sephiroth had absorbed JENOVA`s remains into himself allowing him to draw on all the negative energy within The Planet`s core slowly dispersing it throughout The Lifestream.Furthermore,Geostigma was the result of Sephiroth,JENOVA and Cloud`s collective alien cells infecting The Lifestream when Sephiroth and Cloud both fell into it in the final cutscene. The three Remnants were "born" from that contact in The Crater. This is why The Remnants had features from JENOVA,Sephiroth and Cloud and kept referring to JENOVA as "Mother"(Also, this was a hint of Sephiroth`s influence over their youthful psyches along with the hair, eyecolor and Kadaj`s God Complex and insanity),Cloud as "Big Brother" and the other Geostigma-infected children as "Brothers and sisters"
Kadaj-Sephiroth`s insanity, cruelty, talent for psychological manipulation(JENOVA would be proud, I'm sure),God Complex,love/hate relationship with Cloud(Which, for the record,I don`t see so much as gay but moreso as the "remnants"(See what I did there?) of the caring two old war buddies once shared before taking radically different paths in life),swordsmanship, worship of JENOVA and hatred for mankind and The Planet.
Loz-Sephiroth`s strength, agility and emotional soft spot for "MOTHER" displayed during The Nibelheim Incident
Yazoo-Sephiroth`s allure, stoicism and callous disregard for the destruction he causes to weaker, more dull-witted individuals. Also, I find it insanely satisfying that JENOVA`s babies were adopted by the woman she murdered in cold blood wearing her favorite "son`s" face. Yes,it`s a Deus Ex Machina ending but The Game had a Deus Ex Machina ending as well.

The first sentence is incorrect. What plays after the post-game scene is just the stock sound effect of children laughing that you hear in numerous commercials, TV shows, and movies. FFVII wasn't made with direct sequels in mind and wasn't trying to set anything up with that sound effect. It was just done to make the player wonder if humanity had managed to survive after all, or if what we're hearing is just the echo of a time gone by.

No one should watch Advent Children in a language they understand. If you don't understand Japanese then watch it in Japanese. It doesn't make the script better but it makes it less obvious how bad it is.

Advent Children came out at the perfect time for me. I was 14, that's basically the age demographic right there. Did I care about the plot? Nope, I just loved the fights and the edgy soundtrack. Still really like the movie, although I can admit its many faults

Ah Advent Children, the beginning of overcomplicating and retroactively shitting all over FF7. Very happy they're still doing it with "Remake", very cool 😎

Before Crisis is the worst part of the compilation by far outside of maybe the 2nd book no one read in 2012. You have no idea how abysmal the overall plot end up as the thing goes along and the gameplay never evolves form the busywork of the opening hours. 3/10.

What? I'm not sure what ur referring to, but I did have edgy jokes in my older vids. Not something I'd do today, and they were 100% just jokes to me as well. I'm far left poltically, but not v poltically active otherwise. At least not at the time (I'm cool now). So I was deaf to things like dog whistles and didn't really consider how jokes I'd make in private with friends would come across to others publicly. So that might be what ur seeing here.

ThorHighHeels For a specific thing that caught my ear in this video and one or two others: “Jap” is regarded as a slur, at least in the US. Not saying you meant it that way, I have heard other European people use it as just shorthand for Japanese, but it’s really frowned on over here.
