Talking about the Zippo Windproof Lighter I recently bought, and the funny experiences I have had while carrying it. As a non smoker, people often give me bizarre looks when I take out my Zippo and start to pop it open and light up a flame. Thanks, Cutlerylover. Look what you have done to us all LOL... There is no shame, I love my lighter.

I don't smoke, but it's nice to have a utility lighter. I know what you're talking about in the video. It's just cool to have handy utility tools to flick around and play with out of compulsive desire. You never know when you might need a lighter, a knife, or a flashlight. Don't let people talk you down about being prepared. You must live in the city if people judge you for carrying a knife.

I know the feeling. I've always carried a knife, zippo, flashlight and multi-tool since I was 12. I'm not a smoker and I've never killed someone, but people will always have assumptions. I've noticed that the only people who understand why I carry this gear is more "traditional" people who have a good grasp on the world, mainly the elderly and tougher guys like myself, most people of today get suspicious if you carry anything more than your phone. They can think what they want, but when they come to me for help because they were not prepared I can say "I told you so, now get your own gear".

I promised my Grandma when I was really little that I'd never smoke. Never have and never will. But recently lost my Grandpa, who *was* a heavy smoker back on December 5th 2022 after he collapsed in my arms the night before. He was born on December 27th, 1954 and was a United States Air Force Veteran. He had two zippos, one I gave to my brother and the other I kept.
Since the fifth, I have gotten up every morning and lit a cigarette for him outside using his lighter. I'd let it burn in the ash tray, in his honor.
But if someone asked me why I carry a Zippo, it's to honor my Grandpa and to use for utility in addition to loving Zippo lighters. He was practically my Dad in all but name. He was one of, if not my BEST and oldest friend. He was my hero. Just like my Grandma, who he was married to for 42 years...
~ I'll always miss him, and the times we had and will never have. Rest in peace, Pap.
Sorry for posting this... But this is honestly why I've started to hold onto a Zippo. To keep his eternal flame going now that he's gone.

To me carrying a Zippo is like carrying a piece of jewelry. And funny thing is the first day I got my first Zippo I went out with 3 friends of mine and we stepped into a saloon ordering some food as I realized there were candles on the desks. None of us had a lighter to light the candle on our desk but me. I proudly lit the candle with my brand new Zippo! :-)
I love my Zippo ( 2.003.232 ), it is a limited edition, one with the number 226/500 and picturing a mosque - it reminds me on my trip to Istanbul as a teenager on my 250 ccm Honda back then in 1986.
It was the time of my life, I was young and felt unstoppable - and indeed nothing stopped me on my trip from Germany to Turkey, I did the long trip on my bike like it was nothing... memories are the best thing in life! :-))

The windproof flame is a main selling point of Zippo lighters. The company encourages its consumers to try the "fan test". Obviously gigantic industrial fans are going to be like inside gale force winds but something like a box fan running at medium or high setting will bend the flame but rarely, unless you want it out, snuff it out.
Also a non-smoker who has a lighter on hand. I lived in a house full of smokers who went through Bics like they were candy and were often too broke to afford their own replacements so I figured that was a good time to finally justify carrying a lighter. Zippo fuel isn't exactly cheap though, and when you're around smokers who act like it's an Olympic sport, the lighter can dry out even faster than usual. Thankfully Zippo has eventualities like that covered and sells Butane inserts that last a bit longer than their oil-based counterparts. Heck, they even have USB rechargeable arc inserts if the notion of buying Butane seems daunting to someone.

People are continually amazed that I carry a Zippo and do not smoke. It's funny that no one can think of needing a lighter for anything more than lighting cigarettes.

If you have it in your car keep it in the trunk if you're transporting it somewhere such as a party.

I carry 2 knives (one one of my 2.5-4.5" knives and the other is a mid size victorinox which usually is in my bag) I also have a knife in my truck that stays there as well as a butane lighter that stays with it and $200 hidden away. People are always like why you have these things an I come back to them and ask why they don't. Lighters are tools just like my knife. I don't understand why people consider a knife a weapon just because it folds in half. I really hate how assuming today's society is.

hopefully useful tip: a guy did a review of the zippo emergency fire lighting kit, and in that he said he carries that and his regular zippo with him. he pulls out the wool/cotton-thingy from the regular zippo, and lights it with the flint like normally. he also suggested collecting wool parts from your socks, if needed. so you can take it in a survival kit. one has to be creative, though :D

    • @washinwashimbo5874
      @washinwashimbo5874 2 года назад

That's because a stiletto quite literally was never designed as a tool. It was designed for stabbing people, the modernised stilettos are more art pieces than anything at this point. The only reason people believe that the stiletto is used as a tool or a combat knife would be because of the media.
They're quite literally only designed to be used for combat, they're not meant for cutting, they're not meant for slashing. The media and internet have bred generations of headers thinking that they're classy carrying a stiletto.
      Just use a regular knife.

I'm a non-smoker but have carried a lighter for years. Sometimes it's a Dunhill Rollagas, other times a brass Zippo with a butane insert. I use it quite a bit, surprisingly, for lighting candles, incense sticks and for lighting the stove when the auto-light...doesn't. I also carry a small Swiss Army knife on my key ring which has been used many times..especially the screwdriver. For a busy person, these little tools are a must for the little tasks which just turn up, unannounced. The lighters are also tactile and can act as a stress buster, which is why many non-smokers, and smokers, for that matter, carry them. A petrol insert Zippo is fun, but the smell and the evaporating fuel problem means that it's not really suitable as a non-smoker's every day carry...

In 1994 i bought a zippo lighter that i fell in love with in a store. It was black crackle, and had a silver badge with 4 different style zippo logos on the lower part. I thought it was the coolest zippo i ever saw, and carried/used it for a long time till one day the pin broke on the hinge. Couldn’t bring myself to send it in fearing it might get replaced and never threw it away. Few years ago - i saw Zippo still (or brought back, i dont know) made the exact same model. ( SKU: 363-000003 ). Even though i dont smoke anymore, i was so attached to the thing from my high school days i had to have it again. Now the new one lives in my daily carry backpack, with a zippo butane insert, and tucked inside a zippo leather case to keep it from gettin scratched up between infrequent uses. The original is still sitting inside a jewelry box in 2 pieces. I’ll never get rid of it. Just a token from the best years of my life, when i was young, care free, and surrounded with good friends and having good times outside somewhere, every single night. Its interesting to think that zippo’s have been around for so many decades and have remained largely unchanged, and having one now is as cool as it was almost 30 years ago for me, and much longer for other people. Its truly a simple, effective, and timeless design. Theres just something about that “click”…. I’m actually thinking about buying the zippo yellow flame butane insert for it now, (it currently has the single torch) just to bring back the old flint and wheel without having to deal with constantly refilling something that hardly gets used.
If youre into lighters and knives/edc tools - i highly recommend getting a Leatherman wave plus and the pocket clip if you dont have one. Even though I’m carrying a $200+ Spyderco right now, the Leatherman is still in my backpack. Having done the ultility knife thing, the knife thing, the multi tool thing, for many Many years - nothing beats a Leatherman Wave. Its got everything you need for 95% of those little things that come up and beats every other multi tool on the market. There is NO improvement over a Leatherman Wave. Another timeless design.

When I reached early high school my friend let me have his dads old zippo and it was empty of fuel, I carried it around until one day my dad heard the familiar zippo click and ask my to turn out my pockets... sadly to say that zippo was no more after that... but I eventually bought a couple with my own wages when I was 16/18 and yes I did smoke one and off then. Ya i carry a buck, lighter, and a mini mag light. You know some people think its weird. But when the situation arises. You dont look very dumb anymore ;)
And knives are just so handy. The greatest tool ever created. Lighter. Well he summed that up. And idk how many times i whipped out my mag light. People would reach for their cell phones and use the screens for light. I just laugh and shine some light on the subject ;)

with a bic lighter you got to hold down the button, I can't with the poor dexterity in my fingers. I mostly use mine to seal the ends of paracord.

I just found my grandfather's zippo, bought a kit to bring it to life, wicks flints and fluid, sparker wheel seems to be in good condition, was tempted to shine the case, but i think I'll leave the weathering on it

I don’t smoke or anything but I actually use both for work. The knife for opening boxes and stuff the zippo for burning ends of rope and other stuff. An example I had recently was we were redoing some wiring and we had the shrink wrap tube ready but no heat source to shrink it. I pulled out my zippo got it done.

I have all sorts of gadgets cause I'm a survivalist and fire/EMS. So in fire/EMS I get called a whacker for it. Just a term we use to mess with each other. I usually like to carry my pager, at least one folding knife, my multi tool, and my flashlight. I just bought the same zippo. I have a fire steel which is great but in a survival situation, if I can get a fire going a lot easier with a lighter I will and I want a reliable lighter. It all goes into my "survival"/fishing backpack. I have one cast iron pan, a mini folding "stove" which uses regular burning materials, a mini cup/pot, one MRE, my folding saw, a cheap folding knife, parachord, camp folding utensils, my fishing tackle and maybe a couple various smaller things. I got to add to it still and get a better fishing only backpack. Dry clothes, emergency blankets and stuff like that I want to have as well. It's essentially my camping essentials bag.

I carried a leather bag in the 1980s
And got teased about it being a Gay bag.
I had all kinds of survival tools etc.
I noticed that those who teased me were who needed to borrow the tools soon thereafter
"You mean you need a tool out of my gay bag?"
It's good to carry the zippo in a pouch
As when you fill it sometimes it can leak and give you a chemical burn on your skin
In the tropics a zippo will evaporate empty in a couple of days
Carrying it in a gasketed box helps
But I also carry a magnifying lens
And have found that you need a 3 inch diameter minimum To consistently light fires
I see guys using 1 inch lenses in survival kits
And know that they will only light fires under near perfect conditions

I've recently started thinking about carrying a zippo. I use to smoke though but no longer do. Just seems like a handy thing to carry same as a knife as you've said.

I have a couple Zippo's and i'm not a smoker, i like the idea of having a light for whatever reason, i've lit other people's cigarettes for them, i like being a handy dude.
My biggest gripe with a Zippo is the maintenance, it's always out of fuel, i recently got a butane Zippo but it doesn't have the quality of an original Zippo which is a shame, butane inserts for Zippo's are spotty.
