Zippo Lighter Restoration & Making a Wooden Case for it 🔥

- Zippo Lighter Restoration - Making a Wooden and Epoxy Lighter Case. In this video I restored an old Zippo lighter and made a case for this Zippo, out of wood and Epoxy resin.
This zippo lighter is quite old. I bought it for restoration from a person who found it with the metal detector on a beach. This zippo is made of brass and the sea water created a beautiful patina but if I had not restored it now, it would most likely have been destroyed in a short time.
The restoration of the zippo lighter was not difficult because I used original parts for repair. But after I finished restoring I thought of making a wooden and Epoxy resin case. I have never seen this project anywhere so I had to make my own plan. For the case I used curly Koa wood. I will leave you a link at the end of the description. It was quite difficult to mill the slot where the lighter had to go.
I tried in this restoration process to film the steps that I followed quite simply to understand by you, but if you have questions about the restoration, I am at your disposal in the comments category.
Also, during the restoration I used subtitles about the process and solutions used. If you notice grammatical errors, I apologize in advance. English is not my native language and I am doing my best to improve it.
I put a lot of passion and effort into this restoration. Although I was afraid of the results of the case, I am proud of how it came out and I really like it. I hope you like the restoration and the construction of that case.
That's all for this project, enjoy watching and I have to focus for the next restoration.
The following link belongs to the person from whom I got the wood. Is a seller on the Etsy platform, a serious seller who has quality wood at good prices : www.etsy.com/shop/YellowFinKn...
Cheers to all and stay safe during this times...

Why do I feel that the Insert was changed to something new mid-sandblasting. The side pitting/being bent disappeared, as well as the insert is from January 2010, while the case is 1932-1989.
3:51 - Pitting visible, back side is bent inwards, 3:59 - Insert is swapped to a new one.
Apart from that - end result is insane, as this was more of a wood/epoxy project, rather than a true restoration, that ain't much. Enjoyed the video still
I've already discussed this with others who have commented. due to the rust, the insert looked flat, and when the surface was sandblasted, the shapes began to show. the rust was not deep and the surface had no pits. Indeed, I removed the insert while blasting to better clean the inside with a small brush. then I straightened the board. I didn't show it in the video, because I would have made the video too long and it wasn't a very complex job. I've reviewed that part a few dozen times and you certainly have every reason to believe that the insert has been changed. but I assure you it was not so. Indeed, the insert is newer than the case, but that's how I bought the lighter. I bought it from a beach boy, most likely it was found on the beach near the Black Sea, Constanta, the city where I live. Cheers and glad you liked at the end 👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration Thank you for such an indepth reply
@@DeividasGedgaudas the insert may have been changed out by the same person who changed out the wick to a non-genuine wick. That would explain the date discrepancy.
It is possible 🤷🏻♂️
@@CoolAgainRestoration esti genial omule!
Excellent work. The case you made is beyond clever. However, I want to comment on how incredibly clean your work areas are as well as your hands and fingernails. For me it makes your videos more enjoyable because of the appearance of professionalism. Very nice.
Thank you very much Collins! Glad you like what I do. Yes,I like to clean my workshop and to be clean myself. I think is OCD 😅 thanks a lot again and be safe 🤗
I agree. I'm so detail-oriented, it's soothing to watch such fastidiousness and precision.
Yes! It looks very neat and organized. Do you have a video showing your shop layout and all the machines you use?
Clean fingernails is honestly not very important.
Not important maybe, but appreciated. I can't help but notice details, and, hands are one of my weaknesses so, it's nice when they're well-groomed. His hands are beautiful. I keep forgetting to watch the tools..
Although I'm not a smoker, I'd gladly add that to my display case of beautiful oddities. Incredible restoration, the end result is gorgeous! 👍🏻
Thanks a lot and glad you liked it 😊👍🏻
I also dont smoke but have got 3 zippos. More like a hobby honestly. Small jobs and easy to maintain
I smoke and vape (mostly vape now but was fully a smoker) and have a nice white 2021 zippo :)
I mean.. lighters do have quite a few uses other than lighting cigarettes lol.
Zippos are good for camping etc as well. I don't smoke but have a rolling stone lips one that I absolutely adore lol
I love the way that at 6:29 the zippo logo is completely gone on the bottom of the case but you somehow "restored" it later
i hope you know thats the cap of the zippo case my man
@@idiotic_dude :) Unless the cap is bigger than the bottom, the bottom of the case has no logo on it at this time stamp. Neither does the lid. The Zippo logo and related is gone under the bottom part of the case, and there is no "solid brass" on any of it either when it comes out of the glass beads.
It most definitely looks like another case. However, just because the guy has chosen to use another case doesn't make the video less interesting. The case may have been restored, but not for this lighter. :)
Wow, incredible. the time and patience going into this is nothing short of phenomenal. Great content!
Thank you very much Chris
Mmp
I really appreciate that it's kept in its original brass case and just given a new added look with the beautiful wood-resin bit.
At least if you want to go back to beautiful, shiny brass, you just have to gingerly take jt out.
True. That was the idea from the first. But for this reason I was afraid to make a case because I didn’t knew how will be the results. My luck that I made the case perfectly fitting for the lighter. Not too big,not to small. Like you said, you can take out when you want 🤩
That looks so good, I’m a sucker for wood and resin things.
I like the outcome too 😍 thanks Sophia 😊
I read a comment of yours saying that you spent almost a month on this restoration, it absolutely shows! What an incredible job, an incredible video. All of the camerawork, all of the set up, your craft and care are some of the finest I’ve ever seen on RUclips! Your video feels intimate, yet no music, no voice, simply you and your project. This video was phenomenal, thank you very much for allowing us to see an artist at work. I was captivated from beginning to end, thank you!
Glad to read these kind words and glad you liked it Roberto 😊🤗 cheers
Indeed a Brilliant Work and Personal Commitment and Passion Personified
Thank you very much 😊
Well done restoration. not too much metal loss, re-added nickel plating, properly buffed. even got a proper specific restoration kit. you've reached pinnacle restoration skill. go on and teach!
😅😅 thanks man. What is pinnacle skills?
@@CoolAgainRestoration pinnacle means peak/ the top. Basically he means you are amazing at what you do. Sorry for the late reply.
Oh, thank you very much Orieller 😊 now I understand what he wanted to say 👌
One of the most creative Zippo lighters I've ever seen, looks so beautiful
Good job brother 👌
Thank you very much bro 😎
Many many working hours to restore something you can buy from a market but you restore it because you can, huge respect!
Thank you very much 😊
I especially appreciate that the wood resin housing somewhat resembles the natural brass oxidisation colours, as I find the texture and pattern of the exterior of the zippo pre restoration very charming.
I love when things stay all original like how you used all original or oem Zippo parts when replacing them. That was a great restore!
Thank you very much James 😊glad you liked it
This turned out beautifully! I love the wood and resin case on it. I'm glad you chose to add some blue back to it, since parts of the patina on the brass were a lovely color.
Thanks a lot Kota and glad you liked it so much 😊🤗
Absolutely brilliant, glad this popped up in recommended videos and I got to discover your channel. I’m impressed with everything especially the case, what an awesome restoration 👍👍
Thank you very much and glad you liked it 😊👍🏻

beautiful! it’s clear that you put a lot of care into your restorations ❤️
I try my best every time 😇
The restoration was superb, and the wood/resin case is amazing! Fantastic job on the restoration and case build, a pleasure to watch. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Be well, stay safe and God bless. Rev. D.
Thank you very much my friend and I really appreciate your support every time 😊 stay safe you too
Really love zippo lighters. That brass case was in amazing condition for its age after you cleaned it up. Good call on adding the wood case since the brass zippos really tarnish fast. Very nice job.
That Oddity oil made it really pop out 👍😎 nice casing and restoration piece
Thanks a lot and glad you like it 😊
That turned out incredible!!! Nice job on the wood and resin case, that is an awesome look. Can’t wait to see the next one.
Glad you liked it Randy 😊 I try my best every time 😇
That old case was beautiful. I don't know if I could've brought myself to restore it and probably would've ended up just doing the insert.
same here, I would have tried everything to keep the old case intact it was so unique.
Too many people said that. If I will find another zippo like that, I will seal the patina . This is an idea for the next project 😊
I have no idea why this was so satisfying to watch. Can't believe I went through the whole video with 0 skips. Good job man!!
Thank you very much man 😊
I like how you picked up the old rusty brown and blue cues for the new case
Glad you liked it Florian 😊
Great work! I thought I was going to hate it with the wood and epoxy case because the brass looked so wonderful. My mind was changed, and I loved the outcome!
Glad to hear that man. I was afraid how people will interact with this outcome ..because is different and people never seen that before
Fantastic job!❤️ I collect Zippo lighters, so this is special to me. Thanks for the video post and best of luck to you and your family 🍀❤️
Thank you very much for the wishes 🤗🤗 be safe you too and your family
I love how you are so professional about everything and then the captions say “just in case i fuck up one of them” 10:03 💀 so goddamn funny man. Caught me way off guard.
😇
i love how the cover you made for it mimicked the colouring of the original patina, and ode to what once was!
Thanks a lot and glad you understood the project 👍
This man's work, effort and craftsmanship never ceases to amaze me.
Glad to hear that Justin 😎🤗
That is gorgeous. I love wood and resin projects! The lighter is beautiful on its own, but the case offers protection and another level of beauty.
Thanks Clark and glad you liked it 😊
This is truly amazing, and wow so clean so crisp even your tools and workspace, honestly impressed with the amount of skill you have
Thank you very much Jack 😊
I love people like you who take something that would otherwise be considered trash, and bring it back to life!
we live in such a throw away society. It's sad.
Keep on making these amazing videos! :D
Glad you liked it Tyson 😊 thank you very much
Its FAKE as hell dont belive it
Amazing job! I’ve collected and restored many zippo’s since I was 14 years old but never with the skill and attention to detail you showcased. Do you work for a museum or did you buy all these tools yourself?
Glad you liked it eraj 😊 I buy them for myself
Спасибо автору видео за хорошую работу,люблю когда востанавливают старые вещи,вторая жизнь для зажигалки Zippo
Really impressed by your job, I've seen many of zippo restorations, but yours just so satisfying. Thanks a lot 🔥
Thanks a lot too Kirill and glad you liked it . Hope many peoples find this the best zippo restoration 😅👍🏻
Love how much effort he puts in his restorations love it very much
Thank you very much Fiel 😊
That was satisfying to watch, right up there with the finest time piece restorations
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
The restoration was pretty nice but the process of making that case was awesome😍😍😍 never seen something like that before 🤩 congrats my dear 😘😘
That was freakin awesome! My late father was a long time collector of zippo lighters. I think he would have really liked it. Great job
Glad to hear that man and thank you very much 😊
This is the smartest Zippo repair I have ever seen. He used the Zippo repair products, that was smart. No one else on RUclips has done that, (at least the dozens I have viewed).
Thank you very much Dennis and glad you liked it so much 😊
Crazy how you respond to everyone this deserves a sub and how patient and clean you are, keep up the good work!!!
Thank you very much man 😊
Wow. You really took this to a new level! Wonderful restoration and I really like how you made the case👌
Thanks a lot my Swedish friend 👍🏻
5:21 THE LEAN
One of the many fine products made in my home state. This was an interesting video for me, since this was the 1st time seeing you restore something so small and (compared to say the 1933 grinder) kinda flimsy and frail. Well done!!
Such a beautiful project. I love the wood and epoxy case. I also like how you follow the wick laying instructions to get the best results. Sometimes things need to be done a certain way to get the best results and it's great you followed that.
Glad YOU seen that 🙋♂️😍😊
How do you decide what needs sandblasting and what goes in the cyclone?
Awesome restoration, by the way. The case looks sick, but I think I prefer the lighter as is ;)
That’s why I made the case perfectly fitting. The lighter can be take out easily and wear like a normal lighter. I thought that the air pressure will hit the brass case and will damage the material. That’s how I decided to use the cyclone 👍🏻
@@CoolAgainRestoration i always thought its that situation where "if it fits, it goes in the little tumbler", just because working with the sandblaster on small materials can be tiresome and not very comfortable
Mate, that's some of the best photography, particularly your close ups, that I've seen on You Tube. Well done.
Thanks Geoff 😊 glad you liked it
I don't smoke but to use this beautifully restored lighter, I MIGHT START!
Glad you liked it mate 😊
I've never seen or done anything like this in my life but I watched this whole thing and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it
Thank you very much John 😊
Really nice job and great idea with the case ! Great filming and editing too. Thanks for sharing !
Thanks man 👍🏻
I can not believe how awesome this turned out! Thanks again
Glad you liked it Gary 👍
The patina on the shell was so beautiful I would've hesitated to restore it. Great job!
Thanks Alex 😊
Excellent quality job! You definitely belong among the RUclips masters. I really enjoy your editing style as well. It's a pace and format that I find very agreeable and engaging. Efficient. I have problems concentrating lately but I'm just rolling right along with it. Smoooooooth. (LOL! That's the first time I've seen a restorer swear. Extra points for that. Too funny.)
Glad to read this kind words 🤗 thank you very much for your support Tina 😊
Very impressive work, lighter restoration and making the case. Am split between wanting to see and admire the lovely restored lighter or keeping it in the case, think a display rota system required 🙂 Having the right tools helps so much, & I hope you can find a use for the Zippo restoration tools on other projects.
Thank you very much man! That’s why I made the case perfectly fitting. If someone want the lighter as normal ,he can take out from the case very easily 😎
I appreciate the honesty in the title. Something omitted from many other youtube restoration and repair channels.
Thanks Josh 😊
Another great restoration. I didnt think i would like the wooden case taking away from the original Zippo look but it turned out really well.
Glad you liked it snif22 😊 Thanks
Amazing job 🙌 So pleasant to watch, the editing, the outcome, everything’s perfect. Now I will watch all your videos !! 😃
Thank you very much my french friend. I already watched all your videos 😎
Excellent restoration and the case is awesome
Where did you purchase the repair kit at, I am not finding it online.
Ditto
Thank you very much man. From EBay ,search there 👍🏻 “zippo repair kit”
@@CoolAgainRestoration You are welcome and thank you for replying. Will check that.
The case is gorgeous, personally I like the color of brass when it's polished, gives a gold feeling, which is my favorite color
this was suggested to me and i have no clue about anything relating to lighters or restoring them, amazing 17 minutes of my life
Glad to hear that 😊
I will reply to all messages as usual. If you have questions about this restoration or opinions, feel free to write in the comments. Enjoy the video ,Thanks and Cheers !!
My friend, David, the restoration and customization has always been beautiful. Do you often restore many ZIPPO? New equipment? A big hug. 🍻🍻🍻
Is there anything you cannot transform into art? seriously about me because you are good beyond measure, Wood Metal Electronics,
I bow. why in wood and resin the case?
Threw in a little F bomb there 🤭😁! Great work 👍! I'm restoring a bar top for my sister in law and she wants me to make a mosaic with bottle caps and corks, and then cover it with epoxy resin. Only issue is I've never worked with epoxy resin before 😬 and I'm extremely nervous about screwing it up! Any tips?
Very good friend. Hugs from Brazil.
Hi Rick ! You should check the thickness for the casting resin. For example mines, you can turn only 10 mm layer. After some tutorials video on RUclips, I bet you will become a pro. Is nothing too hard when working with resin. Just be careful with the bubbles. When mix the resin, you need to vacuum the air from epoxy
This is like saying i used 20,000 dollars worth of equipment to buy groceries… i mean i guess technically i did but did I really?
I used to have a Zippo when I used to smoke. I had a brushed steel one for every day stuff and a matte black one with a green/gold dragon on it for nights out.
This video takes me back to those days. The smell of the liquid, the striking of the flint, and that crisp metallic sound of the Zippo opening and closing.
I still don't want to smoke, but damn. I now miss my Zippos again. I haven't thought about them in years. Not using them was one of the first steps that allowed me to quit.
Well done decision 👌
@@CoolAgainRestoration ❤
I love restoration videos like this. I have a suggestion, maybe you can explain what each process is, like how it works and what it’s doing. I think that would be really cool and helpful to the people who don’t really know what is happening specifically. Again, this is just a suggestion.
Thanks buddy 😊 I will think about 👌
What is so satisfying is that you're always using the right tool for the job. Everything looks easy... Although I have no doubt serious skills are required, still!
Thank you very much buddy 😊
I cannot tell you how many times I watched my dad replace wick, flint, and batting, adding lighter fluid in his Zippo which I still have (wonder of wonders!)
Awesome memories 😊
I find it amazing that you can turn that into something that looks like it was just made
Wow. I was pretty much captivated by how cool this whole project was
Thanks and glad you liked it 😊
This is one of the most satisfying videos I ever seen in my life. And as a Zippo collector must say, nice work. 😁 🔥
Thank you very much Oliveros 😊
OMG ! Un estuche para la fosforera !

Wood and fire. Genius!
My guy really said content is content and revived a lighter that probably took 1-4 hours when I could have just walk down the street find a vendor and buy a lighter..10/10 video my guy
lets just appreciate how this guy went back in time to show us how the lighter used to look
Sir, hands down you absolutely have the best videos on RUclips. Thanks.
Glad to hear that Chuck 😇 thanks a lot
I have a zippo of the 50s and i love it, i dont smoke, the zippo was of the unckle of my grandpa, but now i know they took much better care

I’m going down a restoration rabbit hole at the moment after never watching these videos before. That sand blaster is alien technology to me my brain can’t comprehend it getting rid of the rust that fast
That's a nifty Zippo repair kit. Well worth your investment I'd say
100% worth 😎
Imagine this guy couldn't repair something.🤯 This is amazing!!!🤩
Thank you very much Snow Doge 😊
Very aesthetically pleasing, and good job for you reading comments and responding!

Omg thank you for showing us the napkin after using the solvent to get any remaining debris off. I dunno why but it was satisfying to know how much you got off. Great work! My husband and I love your videos!
These kind of messages make my day . Thank you very much, I really appreciate 🤗
Woooow !!
Thanks a lot mate and glad you enjoyed so much 😊 many cheers 🍻
What a beautiful piece you restored and created. Marvellous work.

I loved the old bras case, would have loved to see it restore but keeping the old worn look with the "rusty" patina :)
Next lighter project definitely will be like that 😊👍🏻
I was about to say exactly the same thing. The patina was quite beatiful. The wood-epoxy case on the other hand is ... well ... let's just say not an improvement.
This my friends, is absolute CRAFTSMANSHIP! Something that american companies should still be doing.
