EXTREMELY RARE Lighter Restoration - World War II - Pearl Harbor

- Restoration of a VERY RARE LIGHTER from World War II. This is a metal detector ground found from Hawaii island group, found not that far away from Pearl Harbor. The lighter has a special U.S. Navy badge attached to it. You can see me restore this war relic into a beautiful shiny working piece of history.
ABOUT THE RARE LIGHTER
This is an EXTREMELY rare and very beautiful war relic probably from the World War 2 era. According to the donator (who is one of my subscribers on the cannel) it was found near the coastline on the island of Oahu with metal detector equipment, many years ago. The lighter was so damaged that he didn’t do anything to fix it until he found my channel.
The U.S. Military had their present on Oahu since 1898 when the first soldiers arrived from 1st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment and 3rd Battalion, 2nd U.S. Volunteer Engineer - We all know what happened December 7, 1941, on Oahu. The legendary surprise attack of Pearl Harbor took place that date around 8 am. Somehow in my heart I hope that the lighter is from that specific battle in Pearl Harbor, but it could be from a much earlier or later period also. We just don’t know.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by cleaning the emblem attached to the lighter. It looked fantastic. I guess it is a U.S. Gold & Sterling Navy badge from World War 1 or 2, but I am not quite sure. The badge felt very solid and turned black when heated, so that’s when I figured out that it probably was a real U.S. Navy silver badge. I heated up the lighter to remove the badge and all the parts which were soldered to the lighter.
I sandblasted the body of the lighter with very fine glass beads and low pressure just to be as “gentle” as possible. After that I grinded it with 500, 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper. I polished it to mirror blank and added all the small parts again.
I had to make a new tube for the wick. So I took an old brass screw and created the tube, inclusive a lit on my lathe.
The awesome looking U.S. Navy silver badge was cleaned in spirit before it was attached to the lighter. What a fantastic and beautiful war relic. I hope that you enjoy this restoration video. I really enjoyed doing this and yesterday I worked 21 hours in a row just to get this video ready.

The badge is a US Navy Crest. Great video and thank you for restoring this wonderful piece of American history. It made this retired Navy sailor smile this morning.
thank you so much for your comment I am very happy that you liked it 😊
Great call Shipmate. Yes, it's a older US Navy Crest. It looks pre 1950 to me, and made me smile. As I'm a US Navy Veteran also. I was a BM3 Stationed at Pearl Harbor (1986-1990).

Former seacadet, from Canada here. I'm no expert on heraldry or insignias of the the militaries of world. Without a doubt, that is the badge of the United States Navy. @ 1:40. World War two era possibly? My guess is an officer's due to the "privileges of command" ?
In this video I restore a very rare and special lighter most probably from the World war 2 era? - Please let me know what you think! 👍 ALSO SEE F-4 PHANTOM II Aircraft Restoration 👇 ruclips.net/video/WFBVfvXquJE/видео.html 👈Best wishes and stay safe ❤🍻Martin

From my experience it is rare to see someone who doesn't live in the U.S. take such pride and care in restoration of old items like this. Thank you so much.

I guess restorations has been a thing here in Europe longer than US has existed 😂
... From one American to another... I have slept on beds in Europe and Asia that are older than our country man. The United States doesn't have a monopoly on restoration... This item isn't even a hundred years old, that is essentially a blip in the history of many of the nations on the earth.
Beautiful restoration! My grandfather on my mothers side was career navy .30 years in the service. He would of really enjoyed this ! 4 of my great cousins died in the Pearl Harbor attack .
Hi Adrian, thanks for your comment. It was a dark day in history
As a Navy veteran it gladdened my heart to see this. Awesome job brother.

Indeed it is a U.S. Navy Officer's crest. Amazing find, and certainly another "Awesome Restoration" Martin! The care, indeed reverence you show these old pieces of art is admirable for sure. Thanks again as always for sharing your work and videos with us brother. God bless. Rev. D.
Thanks for your kind words I really appreciate it 👍🙂
The emblem or insignia appears to be the one either a US Navy Chief Petty Officer (enlisted) or Naval officer would have on their service cap or headgear. Phenomenal work yet again Martin.
many thanks for your comment I really appreciate it :)
Chiefs wear a fouled anchor. This is an officers crest.

I love how you take something old and tarnished and bring it back to a beautiful look with honor and pride. Really good job. The badge on the front is the Navy crest. I was in the Army but my grandpa and my aunt were both in the Navy and two of my cousins are currently serving in the Navy. One of them is an officer. Thank you for honoring all the branches of our military with your restorations. It truly makes me and so many others proud to see this.

I just saw a video by internet anarchist claiming a lot of restoration videos are faked… some of the clips he used seemed to be from your videos even though he never called you out directly. I don’t want to believe it’s true since I think you are incredibly skilled as a craftsman. Have you considered making a response?

Yet another amazing masterclass! thank you so much for your kind words I really appreciate it :)
Hint: In my opinion you should turn off the automatic translation of the video title and description. This results in really odd texts for native speakers, for example in German.
OK thanks but I ident turmed it on? 🤔 I got it translated :) can you please tell me the correct translation - thanks in advance, Martin
You need to disable that in your RUclips settings. Not the creator.
It is not fault of the creator of the video...Maybe you should turn off the subtitle by clicking the cc button on the top right of the video...
