Just passing by on this 3+ year old video and I’m reminiscing of my junior high school days with my zippo (I was a smoker back then). Another very simple trick, hold lighter in one hand (hinge facing down) and snap your finger to open the lid, rotate lighter upright and snap your finger against the roller to get a spark. On a sour note, I got caught smoking behind the school and the vice principal took my smokes and zippo (he was cool enough not to call home, but I never forgot my zippo was confiscated). While in high school (9th/10th grade?) I approached him and asking for my lighter back… he didn’t acknowledge he took it/no recollection. Mr. Silverdink (or Silver-richard as we referred to him, not face to face 😉)… if you’re still kicking and see this video, I live in the same town… have since stopped smoking… hope you enjoyed my zippo 😉. Thanks for the memories ✌️
I know the basic one in the middle can wreck the hinge - in fact I bought a plain one expecting it to get sacrificed - but it's also not much harder after you can consistently get it to ping open to drag your index finger on the wheel and light it in one move. Probably with a little practice you could find a way to do that with the first two ones he showed too.

Ive got what I assume is an enamel coated zippo with a graphic printed on it, it suffers from hinge wiggle after doing the top pop a few times a day, i just open the zippo casing and squeeze the hinge with a pair of pliers. With a little practice doing this the hinge abuse is almost non existent. bear in mind metal fatigue will take its toll one day.

Bought a zippo for my pipe. Bought a ranger pipe at a ren faire. I don't smoke but LotR inspired me to try it. The zippo works so much better than matches. I had to watch videos to learn how to smoke it and noticed the experienced pipe smokers always used a lighter. I figured once a week wasn't going to do much harm.

So I’ve figured out how to pop it open and light it in 2 motions , like packin a can of Copenhagen. The down stroke pops it open and the finger that usually is the one making the packing sound on a can of Copenhagen, that finger is the one that strikes the wheel and lights. This is very bad for zippos especially cheap ones, can break a lid right off
