My father and I both got Zippo's at the same time about 25 years ago, His had a brass exterior whle mine was the classic brushed stainless steel. His lighter just seemed to keep the fuel, there was a strange effect between the brass outer sheath and stainless steel insert that just seemed to always seal well and it would never evaporate dry and run out of fuel, whereas mine would leak like an old wooden barn and be dead every couple of days, his would last weeks between refills. Skip forwards about 20 years, My Zippo is still looking pristene bar 2 slight dents on 1 side, and the brass has completely corroded out around the hinge on his, leaving a blue copper discharge.
@@downangels I hear ya, been using them for years--they're called bic's. I just got tired of throwing them out and or people snatching them, when a can of zippo fluid is the same price as a bic from a gas station.
Hey, Thank you! Got a Zippo on my birthday from a friend; had to learn all the care and upkeep for it and your video was perfect. Nice, easy, and knowledgeable.
Quick hint - keep extra flints under the felt. If you worry about running out of fuel, zippo refill canister keychain will give you around 5 refills. To get rid of the sticker mess, zippo fluid and a paper towel. If you are sensitive to the feeling of lighter fluid on your skin, as all zippos leak, use a zippo belt pouch.
@@Sometungsten lol, same here. I switched to a pouch with a belt clip so I can wear it with regular pants, but I have the 3 types of the zippo pouches - a couple of them were gifts, so I have the regular one that needs a belt, and one that I really don't like as it is plastic.
@@shawnlizeleatherdale4052 Thank you for the answer. I have read somewhere that on the long period different flints would damage the sparking wheel but it sounded me strange
This reminds me of being 17 years old... getting drunk on jack daniels and coke and lighting cigarettes with one of these. The stench of the lighter fluid as you pulled it out and flipped it open. Beautiful. Drunk as heck trying not to puke on the tube the next morning after visiting my girlfriend and buddies outside London. Simpler times.
A couple comments. 1) great information here. 2) I have butane lighters in my bag on my power wheelchair. So as not to over draw the fluid. 3) I have been a pipe smoker for 45 years. I have owned a pipe version, and did not find it any more usable than the everyday version. 4) lastly, as a traditional pipe smoker, the zippo has more flame as opposed to more intense flame (ie butane). Both are useful depending on wind conditions. I have not smoked inside as much bride of 35 years is asthmatic. And now most rentals don't allow one to smoke on the property let alone in the home. So the more flame is usually better at least for a pipe. Between the festival of light (Chanukkah) and Christmas. Blessings to you and all!
Thank you so much. I'd tried a number of things to rectify several Zippos not lighting. But your pointer to the wick being packed properly into an S was the solution. All now working properly and lighting first time everytime.
solar clapson do you just wrap Teflon tape around the inner body to make it tighter with the outside shell? Or just near the bottom? Inside? Curious to see where it evaporates from if those areas can be sealed better. I’ve seen people putting a thick rubber band around the top lid too.

@@DIYDad1 Just the standard 1.25 wrap around the inner casing. Any more than that will bind and roll up. You may have to experiment as not all models are exactly the same tolerances.
They make them. You can get them on Amazon and eBay. The problem is, it created Vapor lock and they shrink. So you have to replace them. I would recommend getting a small lighter fluid holder or just fill your Zippo regularly.
I just pulled out two 20-year-old zippos and they worked first try! they never worked this good when they were new because I never read the directions, lol! Thank you so much for this video.
Thanks for the great video! *Tip for re-filling:* at 7:40 if you put the insert another way around (with the screw towards the lid) you can lift the felt and put it inside the lid. Then you can just put the Zippo on the table and fill it without even touching it.
I appreciate this video so much. I've had several Zippos over the years, and at some point, all have stopped working because I never knew how to extend/replace the wick, (and the instructions that come with a Zippo are useless, if they exist at all). I still have them all, and now they can all be functional again 😀. Zippo should pay you for making this video- it's an excellent step-by-step guide for using and maintaining a Zippo lighter.
Been using Zippo for almost 20 years. Learned alot from this video. I was watching a video on using the handwarmer cause mine didn't have instructions and this video came up. Shockingly informative. Well done.
Thanks for the tips. I've had a zippo that has confounded me for months...was going to send it back for repairs. Used your repacking and refilling methods and like magic I have a trusty companion. You da best...and I'm subscribing.
Love the video. I have had multiple zippos in the past. Just got a new one in the mail today. Matte red finish with a brass insert and red felt pad for the bottom. Its my iron man zippo. Never did this to any of my past zippos. Will see how this works. Thank you
Watching this in 2022. I tried every method I could find online until I found you video. I just wanted to say the tape method is genius and worked a dream on my zippo
Great tips…I have had zippo lighters for about 30 years, and never seen that done before with a new lighter… What I have noticed is when you change a wick in your zippo after a few years of ownership, that cotton, or rayon balls in the lighter never seem to go back the same…So I never touch it anymore till the wick is almost done…. Also the felt pad that has the little hole in it.. Over the years I have heard people say the hole is for a flint, and some say, that’s the filler hole for the fluid, cause the older lighters didn’t have lift to fill on the pad…
I've had my zippo for 10 years and never disassembled it. All of wick was pressed all the way to the top! Didn't realize it until I followed this video. Thanks!
When i was a smoker i had a brass zippo back in 89 90 ... now i bought a candy apple red one to light up joss sticks... should be in post this Friday.. glad i saw this video... learnt a great deal. 👍
Great video! I recommend when adding lighter fluid doing it over a paper towel, no point in getting extra lighter fluid on the inside of the casing if you don’t have to. flawless explanation, 10/10!

That's moronic. Why waste the fluid and create a fire hazard. Inside the case is where it is meant to be.
100 percent helpful. My Bic lighters ran out of fuel. And then I stumbled upon this video randomly and remembered I have a zippo. Just never took the time to figure out how to adjust the wick and furthermore. Zippy is running great. Smoko now haha
As a fishing guide in Alaska many years ago I could light my smoke while running a jet boat up river at about 20 mph. I then used it to light the camp fire when I cooked shore lunch for my guests. Zippo never failed me. I no longer smoke but still keep one in my pocket every day. Never know when you need some fire. But I'm crazy. That way.
I'm a former smoker too who still kept carrying a lighter because I was already used to it and it's come in handy so many times. Even a cheap bic lighter is one of those little things that could save your life.
Great tutorial! Bought a used/returned orange case Zippo at REI Garage Sale to use for camping/hiking. Sat in a drawer for a year-plus! Finally decided to see if it even worked. Bought wick, lighter fluid, and flint. Followed your instructions to the tee and VOILA! "I made fire!" Works perfectly. Thanks for a super instructional video.Very well-done!
just bought 3 new '21 zippos (2 solid brass, and chrome) they all had the wick routed correctly. I always noticed that their wick routing was inconsistent. They seemed to have "fixed" that part of assembly.
So right after watching this…the flint blew out of my zippo. While I was in there replacing it, I routed the wick as shown and repacked it, trimmed the wick and filled it up. It’s never worked better! I used to have to flick it a few times to light it, first time, every time now! Thanks!!!
I always thought the copper wiring was just to give the cotton wick some rigidity. The fact that it also transfers heat into the chambered fuel is brilliant. And I did cringe a bit when I watched you cut the wick with your scissors due to that copper wiring. But I guess the copper is soft enough not to damage the blades, huh?
Actually, it is both. You're right, the copper strands are also designed to add rigidity to the wick as well, otherwise it would just fall over. As far as using scissors on copper, those strands are so small and the copper is so soft, any decent scissor will cut right through them with zero issues.
Yes and no. Yes copper will wear the edge on the scissors more than cotton, but the tiny amount will not make a noticeable difference. Especially how infrequently the wick is trimmed.
Great video, we on similar boats love multitools love Zippos .I have tried the Zippos arc insert rechargable it's good too. Also the inserts and the buttom of the case have dates when they were fabricated sometimes they don't necessarily match. Goes by ABC etc that means what month it was made A for January and so on, as well as a number that's the year it was made. I'm also into watches and Oakley sunglasses. Gotta protect your eyes 😎
I have two watches. An Apple Watch that I wear most days, and a special edition Citizen that I got a few years ago. The Citizen I use maybe a dozen times a year.

if you cant get official flints, you can pry the metal shield off of a bic lighter, and pop the striker wheel out directly into your hand you can cut the flint in half and use 1 half in the zippo
Ah remember how as a kid I wanted a real Zippo, just because it was cool. Finally got it and my dad confiscated it for probably a good reason, but have not seen it since :D Interesting and informational video. Thanks.
I don't smoke but always have a zippo on me. I used to carry bic but lint got into the catch and didn't go out as result as I put in my pocket. Zippo is the way to go

Thank you good sir. I am very new to zippos and filling them up. I am trying really hard to write a resume to work at a smoke shop. I want to show with an illustration how to refill and rewick a zippo. Do you have any other videos or suggestions on other crucial products a smoke shop may need me to know more details about? I appreciate this video. A very understandable method. Keep it up!
Thank you for this! Bought a personalized Zippo for a birthday present and was a bit worried about how to set it up in case I blew myself up! 🤣 Great video 😊
Great tutorial my friend! I have a couple of Zippos that were laying around. One I converted to butane and the other I left stock. I decided to dig them out and look up on You Tube what I needed to do to get the old school one going again. That’s when I found your video and I am glad I did! I have always been frustrated that it would dry out so quick, so I went with the ranger band remedy but it did not seal very well around the width of my lighter, so I put it lengthwise which seems to hold the lid a bit tighter. I will see how that goes. Thanks!😊
I only swapped to a butane Thunderbird because of fuel evaporation. I like the open flame feeling but not at the expense of a reliable worst case scenario tool.
I bought a quart of paint thinner to use as fuel. Saved a lot of money. So far it's working just fine. I like the zippo pipe lighter for my pipe. They are simple and reliable. Just need wicks and flints and fuel, not much more. I had to clean the flint wheel as it got filled up with oil and dirt and wasn't sparking right. Other than that, no problems. Very reliable lighters.
Lol. Well there are some drawbacks, actually only one, they tend to evaporate fluid rather quickly in comparison to other fire starters. I am going to be trying out a case for one that is designed combat that problem though, we'll see how it works.

I love how there's a RUclips video for everything! This was very informational and well narrated. I feel confident to go open up that old zippo in my drawer now!
A very clear instructional video that sets the gold standard for other similar videos.
Thank you, I appreciate you saying that.
Guess he had a disposable zippo, your dad was 40 years ahead of his time.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I´d rather have a shitty looking zippo that lasts weeks than one that I have to refill every few days
@@downangels I hear ya, been using them for years--they're called bic's. I just got tired of throwing them out and or people snatching them, when a can of zippo fluid is the same price as a bic from a gas station.
If i wanted to preserve objects like museums do, how can i do it? I got a camera id like to last.
@@albertogiavani75 Honestly the best way is to just not use it lol.
Just ordered my army lighter, thank you for the beginners guide for something that seems so overwhelming but is fairly simple to get the hang of.
You’re very welcome.
Overwhelming? It's just a lighter. I hope your car never breaks down!
@💩💩💩
Hey, Thank you! Got a Zippo on my birthday from a friend; had to learn all the care and upkeep for it and your video was perfect. Nice, easy, and knowledgeable.
Quick hint - keep extra flints under the felt. If you worry about running out of fuel, zippo refill canister keychain will give you around 5 refills. To get rid of the sticker mess, zippo fluid and a paper towel. If you are sensitive to the feeling of lighter fluid on your skin, as all zippos leak, use a zippo belt pouch.
Ok
@@Sometungsten lol, same here. I switched to a pouch with a belt clip so I can wear it with regular pants, but I have the 3 types of the zippo pouches - a couple of them were gifts, so I have the regular one that needs a belt, and one that I really don't like as it is plastic.
Hi, for Zippo can I use flints that I find in Bic unrefillable lighters?
@@wintersnowwintersnow1815 usually. Some brands are too long to fit properly
Very vivid.
How old are you now?
@@imrlyqt3551 53
"i drink jack and coke" - trash
@@joebenson528 Well, I was 17 years old. I wasn't quite attuned to the fineries of a Macallan rare release.
Zippo arrived today, came straight here, all set up and ready to go!
Thank you so much. I'd tried a number of things to rectify several Zippos not lighting. But your pointer to the wick being packed properly into an S was the solution. All now working properly and lighting first time everytime.
I just wish Zippo put a rubber gasket on their lighters to keep fluid from running out. Keep up the great vids!!!
It would be nice if they figured out a way to limit the evaporation somewhat.
solar clapson do you just wrap Teflon tape around the inner body to make it tighter with the outside shell? Or just near the bottom? Inside? Curious to see where it evaporates from if those areas can be sealed better. I’ve seen people putting a thick rubber band around the top lid too.
@@DIYDad1 Just the standard 1.25 wrap around the inner casing. Any more than that will bind and roll up. You may have to experiment as not all models are exactly the same tolerances.
I hadn’t heard that one, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.
*** reminder to look at this tomorrow when mine comes in.
Thank you, I appreciate that very much.
Been using Zippo for almost 20 years. Learned alot from this video. I was watching a video on using the handwarmer cause mine didn't have instructions and this video came up.
Shockingly informative.
Well done.
Great to hear, and thank you.
Im 41and just bought my first Zippo. This helped me get it set up. Thanks!
I never prepared my Zippo like this and it works fine BUT I really admire your level of passion, expertise and professionality. Congrats from Italy!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the tips. I've had a zippo that has confounded me for months...was going to send it back for repairs. Used your repacking and refilling methods and like magic I have a trusty companion. You da best...and I'm subscribing.
Thank you, especially for your subscription.
My father just gave a Zippo lighter, your guide helped me a lot, thank you very much!
Thanks!
Hello ! Most informative ! Thank you for your input ! I ordered my zippo 007 a week ago and when I receive it I will do what you just did ! Cheers 👍
Thank you. I have seen some pretty cool 007 versions over the years. Good choice.
This is perfection! Just got my zippo and couldnt get it to lite for life of me. After following this video we have 💥💥💥💥
That’s great, glad I could help.
The extra flints in the bottom under the felt was brilliant! Great idea! Thanks!
The BEST, most comprehensive and most enjoyable to the point video about Zippo lighters on RUclips!!
Thank you!!
I didn’t think I was a beginner but I learned some things from this tutorial. Thanks!
You’re welcome sir, thank you for watching.
You’re very welcome. Appreciate you taking the time to watch.
This was incredibly useful, thanks. After repacking like you explain, mine lights better and the fuel lasts much longer.
Thank you so much! Visited the Zippo Museum in Bradford, PA, and left with two. Now I know how to care for them.
just bought 3 new '21 zippos (2 solid brass, and chrome) they all had the wick routed correctly.
You can always just give the scissors a quick run with a honing steel afterwards if you’re worried.
Yes and no.
Yes copper will wear the edge on the scissors more than cotton, but the tiny amount will not make a noticeable difference. Especially how infrequently the wick is trimmed.
I don't own a zippo but I'd love to own one someday, and i find the tradition and care quite mesmerizing
I always thought the hole in the felt pad was for holding a spare flint, have you ever heard that? Great video, thanks for making it!
That is exactly what it is for.
Thought it was where you squirt the fluid?
Been holding one of my zippos for 8 plus years and this video helped me bring it back to life.
Perfect instructions 10 stars and thumbs up... I was following you to the second and it turned out perfect!!!!
Thank you sir.
I got my first Zippo. Always love this classic lighter despite the fact I don't smoke. I enjoy staring at the flame. It relaxes me.
@@txtoolcrib Nice I have around 7 citizen eco drives, bunch of casio protrek. A few seikos. Most my collection now is almost all solar. And a casio protrek smart watch with offline gps/ Satellite maps pretty awesome. Looks like and uses Google maps just like it looks on phone.
if you cant get official flints, you can pry the metal shield off of a bic lighter, and pop the striker wheel out directly into your hand you can cut the flint in half and use 1 half in the zippo
thanks internet dad
Got one for my brother as a b-day gift and had no idea what I was doing. Thank you very much!
You sir are a lighter expert! I didn’t expect to learn this much
Thinking of buying my dad one for Christmas, thanks for the video :)
They make great gifts. Check out some of the Armor versions, really cool options.
Thank you! I just got one as a gift and i had to keep refilling it. Took everything out and rerouted the wick. Like a charm now
Ah remember how as a kid I wanted a real Zippo, just because it was cool. Finally got it and my dad confiscated it for probably a good reason, but have not seen it since :D Interesting and informational video. Thanks.
I’ve been carrying a zippo for a few years but I learned a few things from this. Thanks a lot. Great video.
I don't smoke but always have a zippo on me. I used to carry bic but lint got into the catch and didn't go out as result as I put in my pocket. Zippo is the way to go
I wish all instructional videos had the same attention to detail as this guy's content.
I've had zippos here and there throughout my life, and I am still learning something new about them. I had no idea I could store my extras in the bottom, guess I should've read the instructions all these years lol
Thank you! I never could have figured this out from the Zippo directions… your tutorial was easy to follow.. you’re a genius
Keep it up!
call zippo
Wanted to repair and do maintenance on the zippo I got from my passed away uncle so thanks a lot for this!
Thank you for this! Bought a personalized Zippo for a birthday present and was a bit worried about how to set it up in case I blew myself up! 🤣 Great video 😊
Double comrade special, so good to see you two together !
Great info as usual! I use a 3/4" ranger band & it keeps fluid for just about a month (of non use)
Thank you sir. Thanks for the tip as well.
Thanks!😊
Am I the only one who loves how the zippo fluid smells when using it... I don't think the butane insert would be for me. But awesome video.
I love the smell of Zippo fluid. I just can't bring myself to keep filling it when I don't use a lighter often enough....
I only swapped to a butane Thunderbird because of fuel evaporation. I like the open flame feeling but not at the expense of a reliable worst case scenario tool.
My Brother doesn't even smoke yet he will still grab my lighter and smell it every now and again. LOL
Just got my first zippo and after doing this setup it works flawlessly. Thanks a lot! :)
I know this vid came out 7 months ago but it’s still useful, thanks.
You’re quite welcome, thank you for taking the time to watch.
@@txtoolcrib Now it's at 14 months ago and still useful.
Been using and collecting Zippo's for 40 years best lighters on the planet . Thanks Bradford .P.A ..
I’m desperately trying to restore a really cool medusa zippo I found on a park bench wish me luck 🤪
Good luck!
Instructions unclear. House in flames.
I have a 63 slim... blank evgravable excellent shape.... You helped me figure out the year... Thank you...
Such a great review! Now I want to buy a Zippo Lol
Lol. Well there are some drawbacks, actually only one, they tend to evaporate fluid rather quickly in comparison to other fire starters. I am going to be trying out a case for one that is designed combat that problem though, we'll see how it works.
Great video, my Girlfriend gifted me a lighter and thanks to you I’ve set it up properly
Thanks man
i have a zippo from the 90s that works great but the wick is a bit old. when i buy the new wick its gonna be like new!
That is the great thing about Zippos.
Just pull it up a little
