This video made me smile. I just turned 54 and got my first Zippo when I was 18. I overfilled it way too much, it caught fire big time and I never used one again. Fast forward to last year. My work hired a new guy that carries a Zippo. Got me back into every day carry and collecting them again. Awesome video, thank you.

@@That_1940s_Delinquent it's not necessarily too unusual, I'd been using mine for about 3 years (a hand-me-down) without any writing on the felt and only learned it was supposed to have that writing when I bought myself a new one.

Very helpful. I followed these instructions and filled my lighter fr the first time with no problem at all. Most important, I didn't overfill it and cause any of the problems associated with that. I recommend it.

That's my favorite part about accidentally overfilling. I always burn the extra fluid off my hand. Never gotten a chemical burn from it though but I work with acetate so that's not terribly surprising.

I remember about 40 years ago it was impossible to overfill a Zippo because you could easily buy small rubber capsules of lighter fuel that were just enough to slightly underfill a lighter and were also cheap
Great content as always. You almost got me to dig out my fluid insert, i recently switched to the Zippo Butane insert, i kind of miss the smell plus the ability to have a constant flame, without holding a button. Besides the jet flame doesn't serve as a emergency light source... Still, the convenience of not having to worry about evaporating fuel seals the deal for me. Keep up the good work.
I saw people put one or more flints between the felt and the absorbent cotton, and when I received mine I saw that hole and thought to myself: "Huh, is that for refilling?", but then I was worried I would put in too much lighter fluid for not being able to see inside. So I lifted that felt as Zippo said, and as I was done I thought to myself: "Wait, I need a reserve flint! As I was about to put one in that very space, in between the felt and the absorbent cotton, I noticed the hole again. But instead of lifting the felt again I just stuck the flint in that hole and I was happy about the nice fit it has. And now I am learning in this video that Zippo has intended it for that! Haha, so intuitive! I figured when one runs out, I will only need one more. After all the fluid will run out before the new flint will be used up again. But that's just me.
Thank you sir, I just almost got burnt. You know there was a flame ball literally! Then I searched for tutorial and I found your video very useful! 2 5 seconds. Now I just put the lighter open outside for a while hoping it will dry a little bit.

Nice!!! I use a gasket at the bottom and a cut up bike tube to keep ot from evaporating. it usually doesnt leak on me. There are a lot of videos on youtube about ranger bands on zippos
I used to fill until I saw some fluid drip out the other end, but since I saw one of your previous videos showing your filling method I’ve changed that. That being said, I usually use butane inserts now when I do smoke.
Xaxa never knew it could be so bad. There isn't much bad stuff in there, at least in the Zipppo fliud. You probably have to be soaked in it for long to experience something.
Found your video after trying to fill mine, not even 3 seconds in on new lighter kit, and had fluid out the top (while upside down of course) thought odd, so found you. Letting sit to evap, will try lighting in a bit, thnx
Great vid, so if you do overfill just to be clear, the solution is to just open it on it's side in an open area to let it evaporate the extra overnight? Or how long?
I've done it, keeping it in my small pocket, sat for awhile, felt a stinging sensation and when I checked it out in the bathroom, there was a perfect red rectangle. A fast, and painful, lesson to learn haha
A newer cheat to avoid overfilling is the Aluminum Fuel Canister. Holds EXACTLY one refill's worth of lighter fluid! Also, for those on the go, you can chuck one in your bag, pocket, purse, backpack, glovebox/console, et cetera, and you'll ALWAYS have at least one refill's worth on hand. It also comes with a sing flint holder, so you can keep a spare flint on hand as well. Still screwed if your wick's too short...but at least the fue issues have been dealt with. d=O)
What is a way to fix the issue if you have over filled. Should you dump out the extra fluid? I bought one as a gift and filled it for them but it has been overfilled and I do not want to hurt anybody! Thanks in advance.
Overfilling is not that big of an issue unless it is in direct skin contact for long periods of time. I would remove the insert and place it in a well ventilated area for 5 to 10 minutes to help evaporate some of the excess fluid. Then you should be good to go.
@@txtoolcrib Hello I have question. Looks like that lighter fluid drips out, between black shell wall and lighter silver wall. My question is, can we take out lighter out of shell, then apply one drop of "multi purpose oil" around outer wall of lighter, and put it back in shell. Then we lubricated metal to metal surface, but we also sealed it. So the only way for lighter fluid to get out is through wick hole, when lighter is upside down.
I have a zippo that I bought in 1964 and carried it for a very long time until I quit smoking. I had a friend who gave me another one that I used too. Well I saw a movie and of course people were using them so I thought I'd try to get mine fueled and I can't get them to work now. I just got mine and first time setting it up. I definitely did over fill it the first time and let it sit and made sure to wipe the case and wash my hand before lighting it. Do you know how long it is till it needs a refill?
Sometimes I flood mine on purpose. But it sits overnight while I'm sleeping. If u do overfill you can wrap the lighter while closed with paper towel and shake in for 20 seconds or so and the access comes out.
Good morning just a curious question how long after you fill Zippo lighters can you leave them stored away without use and it still last and be good thank you for reading this God bless
I usually fill up my zippo until I see fluid dripping down the inverted top end then I wipe it dry with a cloth, return it in the case and let it stand open for about 1 minute to evaporate any excess vapour that may still linger around even after wiping. Soon as I light it, the flame is pretty high. But eventually gets smaller as time goes by. Occasionally I can also see a bit of fire in the open lid when I light my zippo. But it doesn’t seem to bother me much, for it eventually goes away. Hahaja. 😁 In the first few lights, the flame was too high and bright it even scared my mom as I tried to light a candle in the dining room.😄
The passion for zippo lighters can be burning, in a figurative sense, but also in a purely physical sense. The zippo is loved or hated. I love him, because he is a very elegant, and very masculine lighter. I don't smoke anymore, but I continue to collect zippos. I love the zippo so much, that I stopped doing tricks, so as not to ruin the hinges.
So I bought a Zippo and really didn't use it on the regular but I kept it in my pocket. After a while of it just being in my pocket it ran out of fluid. So I guess my question is will it just naturally evaporate or just leak out. I feel like it was a waste to buy if the fluid runs out so fast even during periods of non use.
chemical burn on my thigh from my lighter being too full! I remember this! Problem was, I never could get my zippo to light reliably, so I'd always overfill, not knowing any better.
Does it have flint? If it doesnt spark and it has flint then idk.. could be a bad wheel, what fluid are you using? Sometimes you need to blow on the chimney before striking the flint to get some air in the mix
My friend recently bought a zippy lighter and instead of watching how to fill the fuel he pour fuel inside the whole where the twig goes and now it doesn't spark. Is there a way he can fix it? Or does he have to replace everything??

when it comes to filling, I rather underfill it if anything, l;asts me for 2/ maybe 3 cigar lights before the flame gets small and needs refilling, does me well
Smart man for keeping x3 flints in the bottom, under the felt & saturating them with each fill. Eventually the "gold coating" will wear off & your flints will start to break down.. ruining your rayon balls. You make it seem like filling a Zippo lighter is methodical rocket science & highly dangerous. It's not. Also, a Zippo will leak fluid if your lighter is upside down, regardless. Leave it in your pocket, upside, all day and see for yourself.
I guess, if you like Zippos this is worth the time and effort. On the other hand, the maintenance/refilling required just seems an unneccessary way to complicate your life.

when it comes to filling, I rather underfill it if anything, l;asts me for 2/ maybe 3 cigar lights before the flame gets small and needs refilling, does me well
You dont have to do all that just fill it through the tiny hole & stop once u see its full. Simple.
You can start a fire with a Zippo lighter? Who new???
Instructions unclear now its acting like a jet engine
Lol
I have a question why is my zippo sizzling
If you overfill the zippo and put it in your pocket, you will burn your leg!
I guess, if you like Zippos this is worth the time and effort. On the other hand, the maintenance/refilling required just seems an unneccessary way to complicate your life.
I think it's considered by those who like Zippos to be an enjoyable, relaxing experience with a quality piece of personal equipment.
Mines always popping and never over filled it's only my cheapest one lol
susy ad´s
Ronsonol stinks
First of all your using the WRONG fluid, ALWAYS USE Zippo fluid!!!
Haha, I see he's got the "Ronson also works."!
Throw it and get a clipper
