Greetings from the UK! Great and informative video on how to clean a Zippo. I love my Zippo and consider it one of the best things that I own. They are a beautiful product and on a TV programme aired here in the UK, regarding the 100 greatest ever inventions - a cigarette lighter (in any form, including re-fillable and disposable) as voted by the public came in at number 1. The technology and simplicity of the lighter is what made it the winner. It explained how a group of explorers stumbled upon a tribe of people deep in the Amazon rainforest - a people who had zero concept of the outside world. Upon observing a member of the tribe preparing a fire in the evening, one of the explorers decided to show the group how in an instant he could have fire within his hands. The utter amazement and surprise when the tribe saw this was unbelievable. To the tribe, the Western explorers must have seemed like aliens from another planet. The fact is, the Zippo is the ultimate example of a creation from a very simple and universal concept - fire in an instant. The Zippo is pure simplicity and elegance and I keep another one in my survival kit at all times. Ps: Your English is excellent and thank you for your instructional. Chris.
Thank you! I'm a girl and I just bought the elephant zippo design. Fell in love with the design. You made it easier for me to understand how to take care of my new lighter. I don't smoke. I just love the look of it and of course, in case I need a lighter for camping. I love it!

Very informative and to the point. have a great day.

I've had a this one Zippo for 5-6 years has a crow eating a eyeball, I got it when I was 9. I only learned tricks when I was younger than lost it. Now I've found it, refilled it, and it took a day or two for it to start working every time I tried lighting it. Now I use it to smoke weed.

As I'm constantly doing with the regular lighters I use on a regular basis! but then, I got a good lighter (one of those versions of Zippo, only on a butan gas) as a gift, which I liked, and started using it on a daily basis, and there we are, two years later, I still hadn't lost it! Which turned out to be a normal thing, because one doesn't have the same attitude towards a lighter which he/she likes (and paid some good money for it), and actually takes good care of i, so the lighter is still here! And that's how, a few days ago, I got another present, my first classic Zippo lighter, so I started looking up for videos about a maintenance of it, and I find yours to be VERY, VERY GOOD! I sure learned all the basics I wanted to know, about how to maintain my new Zippo, without having to go and ask people to show me how to do it, or anything alike! Thanks again!
Thank you. That was the greatest feedback I ever received. Nice to share knowledge. Zippo isn't just a lighter. Its history. And when you first get one, you stay wit it for the rest of your life. After that, when you are gone the lighter brings history for the people's who cared about you. And the history will live forever.. it's just an amazing little thing.
I also do a couple other things: i clean the flintwheel with a gun cleaning type bronze toothbrush after removing the old flint (wheel moving freely), and burnish the outside of the chimney with it--gives the chimney a real nice antiqued look and removes carbon staining etc. I also give the flintspring a little gentle stretch to remove set, and on some Zippos, seems particularly the Slims, i use the old Hollywood trick of adding either a tiny piece of used flint under the new flint or a tiny piece of brass brazing rod to add a tiny bit of extra pressure against the flintwheel for better spark. If a tiny bit too tight and binding against the new flint, moving the flintwheel forward and backwards should free it and get it sparking.
I just bought a $100 zippo, it's the 'Armor Nautical Scene Design', pretty amazing lighter! Some people complain and say its too much maintenance and that bics are better. Which for lasting a long time in the fuel department bics are better. But a zippo is something that you have for life, little cleaning and replacing flints, wick. My personal favorite lighter is a zippo.
jojorobino5312 yeah. I've had mine for 5 6 years, it takes a few times but it still works great. I actually never did maintenance to it since I lost it for 4 years..
Ask ur friends to save u empty disposable lighters they use. I often find the flint left over is slightly longer than a zippo brand flint (free flints). I also add a small folded peice of foil to fill the bottom of the case so the steel insert squishes down and makes a good case seal. (heavy smoker and i just tryed this ... 5th day today, still works)
@Uniroyal Mish I just find disposable lighter on the ground with usally half tank full I just found 2 disposable and one you use on a grill and all of them I need to clean to see if they work at all.

this was a great video! I took my Zippo apart using it, and realized the wick was much to short (from use). Now I preparing it to be sent to Zippo customer care for wick replacement. Thank you again!
This was fantastic. I like looking at other guys methods of doing stuff. You learn a lot by checking out different ways of doing things rather than just sticking to what you know. I have been using Zippos for years and I never clean the chimney. But I will start cleaning it now because of this video. Good job my friend :-)
Thanks dude, this help me out a lot! It helped me to understand how my zippo works exactly, i added some cigarette filters in as i didn't think mine had enough wadding, mine is an old zippo i purchased when I was young. Also adjusted the hinges with some needle nose pliers, now it feels like a dream to use! :)
No, you're still able to send it in. I've done it plenty of times with Zippos bought at pawn shops and ebay. I actually have 3 in Bradford, PA getting repaired at the moment that I bought secondhand
actually zippo recommend on its homepage to cut the wick properly 1 or 2 times a year and i urge every zippo owner to follow zippos recommendations for proper work of the zippo lighter
there's a product called "shellite" which is a petroleum distillate metal cleaner / camp stove fuel. Its around $7 for a liter. Has no kerosene smell and Most mechanics workshops will know what it is, And im pretty sure its chemically the exact same stuff that zippy sells in 100ml for $6 .... so huge saving. (au money)
all you need to do with a zippo is carve your initials, fill it up with gas, and add a flint every now and again. Ive never cleaned mine and it gets the job done just fine.
You dont need to clean them , they are designed to last , but generally looking after anything it will last that little bit longer and its nice to get all the black gunk off from time to time
I have owned and used my zippo since 2006 the day i bought it. I have never changed my wick or cleaned my zippo still works great, however it is about to be sent in to zippo because hinge is very loose. I just need to buy a new 1 b4 i mail mine in for repair.
You should change the wick at least annually due to the fact that as the cotton in the wick physically burns up, it lowers the actual wicking ability of the wick.
@@SergeantExtremenah, you shouldn't have to change wicks, it's burning the fuel vapor not the wick, zippo wants you to believe that so they can sell you more stuff.
Tip: just use normal Gas for cleaning. its even cheaper than the cheap lighter fluid, and basically the same. (i know there is a different between them, but it does only matter for filling it up) after cleaning, just wait 1 min and its evaporated. after that you can fill and use it
I like the way you cleaned the Zippo lighter and replaced the wick and assembled it. That is the way I have been cleaning them for years and I have one or more around home which need a pin put in them to replace the one which fell out. Since I got them while in the Air Force I want to keep them and they are good otherwise I will look up where I can send them to have work performed on them and get them back.
You can send your lighters back to zippo directly and they will fix and clean for free. Zippo Has great customer service. And thank you for your service sir.
Have my zippo for about 2 years. Never had to replace anything except for the flint once. I'm a smoker so I use my Zippo daily. These things are made to last.
had my HPC engraved Zippo almost 25 years. never cleaned it never changed the wick. just flint and fluids and slide the wick up a bit and trim it and it still works great.
@@jeofreypereira yep, there is even a story that it stopped a 9mm bullet somehow and soldiers used to dip the whole zippo in gasoline, they didnt bother with filling it properly

I bought a set from amazon a couple years ago that was 1 wick card, 2 flint cards and a 4 oz thing of zippo fuel. Anyways it lasted me forever but as my collection has grown and I fixed up old lighters to make them new again I ran out and went on amazon again to find the kit again and instead found a kit that contained 3 wick cards, 3 flint card and a 12 oz zippo fuel! It was the same price as the other from a few years ago, $12! Just thought anyone who is into zippos might want to know! I have one zippo that I use for whatever and the rest I keep stored in my collection and so I use the fuel for whenever my daily zippo dries up. I feel like it’s a rare hobby especially for a 21 yo female college student but I also watch mad men and am into vintage things so there’s that.
Paige 1996 since I just read this, idk what to say. I just got a zippo well. My grandpa gave it to me when I was a baby. Now I’m 14, and recently found the zippo and restored it filled it with zippo fuel my dad had in his hmm work place or something. ITS SO COOL!!!!
yeah we use thinner in the garage and someone wanted to use my zippo only it was empty so we got the tire section and filled the lighter with thinner and it worked like new
The ronsonol fluid has much more stuff in it like jet fuel, gasoline, kerosene, ether and 3 different kinds of naphtha and a few more things I’m probably forgetting so no naphtha is not the same as ronsonol. However I think this guy claimed he uses it for cleaning the zippo and in that case plain naphtha will work just as good. All that stuff in the ronsonol is only for quicker ignition so one tiny spark will light the zippo with ronsonol in it.
paint thinner is mineral spirits. mineral spirits can be used as charcoal lighter. Naptha is similar, but different. Naptha evaporates faster, and it has a lower flash point which makes it easier to light with a spark- which is why it's used as zippo fuel.
Just got my first ever Zippo yesterday it looks just like yours except mine says Zippo really small in the bottom right corner the video really helped for future cleaning plus I didn't know how to put the Zippo lighter fluid so now I know thanks
Before you change the wick due to the charred end, pull the wick out up to the top of the chamber and cut off the charred end. You can do this several times before you have to change the wick.
I've used my Zippo daily for 34 years now and have never done any maintenance on it. I did send it in twice because the hinge failed but beyond that nothing besides refueling and replacing the flint
You cleaned the zippo when it was relatively clean, you then replaced the flint which had plenty of life left, the wick looked fine too and you could have just pulled it out further and trimmed the burnt end.
I cut a new wick in half. I get 2 wicks for the price of one, I also put a little bit of clock oil on the hinge. I also stretch the spring on old zippos, after so many years the spring 'shrinks'. But just a little bit.
If you get a flint spring that's too far gone to save, you can take the spring from underneath the flint in a bic lighter and cut it to length to replace the zippo spring.
in a pinch you can disassemble a regular bic lighter (watch out because once you pry out the striker wheel, the spring will shoot the flint out like greased lightning) the flints on a brand new bic are a little over twice the length of normal Zippo or Ronson replacement flints. you can use the wire cutters at the base of plyers to split the flint in half. put one half inside of the Zippo flint tube, and stick the other half into the little hole in the felt. you can even stick a 3rd flint under the felt between the felt and the cotton. out of the way, but accessible if you need it.
+Dirtbag Paul its great too because half of the bic flint is still slightly too long, so it locks against the wheel when the flint spring screw is fully tightened. as it should be 'finger tight' anyways, use your finger or thumb to loosen the spring until you can actually use the wheel to create sparks. everyday before i leave the house i put a few bubbles of fuel in, finger tighten the flint screw, and it feels like new everytime.
lulz, everybody makes it look easy.. but the wick definitely did NOT pull through easily for me (had to tape it off like a shoelace in order to yank it through with the pliers).. also for anybody new (like me), i definitely would NOT recommend putting it upside down in the case to fill.. i get that it's probably easier for someone who's done it a hundred times, but it's actually hard to gauge the flow of lighter fluid (i did it over a basement utility sink, so not the best lighting), and ended up with a puddle of fluid inside the case.. long story short, the cleanup took longer than the entire setup..
Cleaning can help to preserve the metal in the chimney. Having soot on the surface of the metal while it burns can slowly oxidize the surface over time. Now, I'm not saying clean that b*tch every week. But every few years is acceptable and can vastly increase the lifespan of the insert and keep your lighter going for ages to come.
Another good reason to come in from the top is that the end that gets frayed due to sliding through the hole and getting pulled through ends up at the bottom where nobody will see it while the "nice" end stays at the top.
+Zach Eiriksson Well, I would hope the Zippo and Ronsonol flints are the same. After all, Ferocerium is Ferocerium no matter who makes it. As far as the fluids go, Ronsonol used to have its own distinct formula, however, I heard that Zippo retired that Ronsonol formula around 2015 so you are also correct in saying the fluids are the same as well.
I don't lift the felt pad to fill. I use the little hole in the middle of it to insert the spout, removing it to allow the can to "inspire" and repeat the process until the fuel starts dripping from the flick. It's much simpler and faster. And I do keep a spare flint under the felt pad, yes.
It was great bro, but some tips: You can actually wash the insert with water and detergent and some sponge or brush. But you have to remove all the rayons (even the one you didn't need to remove). I am also using some Silver Shining Solution which makes my insert as a new one. You can also buy those rayon which usually comes in a pack with one new felt as well, so I've made some of my insert just as it is brand new. Keep in mind if You do so, put the Flint Spring in a mug with some lighter fluid for a couple of hours as well.
why cant you just grab the pilers and pull the burnt tip of the flint up and cut off that burnt tip?? I recently bought a zippo lighter from Walmart and I'm just curious.
That’s because the wick is woven throughout the rayon wads inside the lighter in sort of an S shape. If you pull the wick up from the top the wick isn’t going soak up the fluid that settles at the bottom of the lighter, so you’ll end up refilling your lighter more often.
You can do that because fuel tends to evaporate so you can cut it couple of times without a '' unused fuel'' problem. You can clean it with rubbing alcohol too. I have mine from 2014 and use it everyday. Only problem i had were hinges because the lighter dropped me dozens of times.
Just a heads up, keep all of your old bic lighters or similar type, the flint will fit your zippo, it will be longer so you will have to loosen your set screw or the wheel wont spin, but that the trick I usen good luck
There is no need to apologise for the "bad English". If I understand what your talking about then your doing just fine. Love the video by the way. It was very helpful. Keep it up!👍
Closest my Zippo gets to a cleaning is blasting it out with compressed air every ten years or so.
I dont even do that i just gut the insert then throw it in alcohol for a few minutes thats it

Why not do it yourself?
When I went to the zippo web site, looking to order a new wick,i did not see any. But I did see the opportunity to mail it in to be fixed.
jason lombardi are u fuckin joking? Lmao you i-Dot
Thank you youtube recomendations for showing me this even though i don’t own a zippo
You're welcome, and thank you for the feedback. Take good care of your old Zippo.
Cillit Bang u still alive?) You made me great flashback. Greetings from Turkey

Thanks for teaching me how to effectively clean my Zippo, without even making a scratch on it.

Yo it's mee tooooooo
No, you're still able to send it in. I've done it plenty of times with Zippos bought at pawn shops and ebay. I actually have 3 in Bradford, PA getting repaired at the moment that I bought secondhand

actually zippo recommend on its homepage to cut the wick properly 1 or 2 times a year and i urge every zippo owner to follow zippos recommendations for proper work of the zippo lighter
The wicks can be $3 a pop too
Thank you very much. Some little tricks there that were helpful as I just bought my first zippo lighter last month.
Same here... Pick up something new everytime👍🏽
You got it goin' on man! Spyderco, Leatherman, Zippo, G-Shock 😁
You dont necessarily need to chang out your wick, you can pull it up and cut off the burnt part

ThingBlaze how often do you clean your zippo?
@@Jacob-le6nh Not often. Two times each year maby.
Thank you; all very clear and easy to understand, with perfect camera work.
there's a product called "shellite" which is a petroleum distillate metal cleaner / camp stove fuel.
You dont need to clean them , they are designed to last , but generally looking after anything it will last that little bit longer and its nice to get all the black gunk off from time to time
Just Some Guy right you are sir
I have owned and used my zippo since 2006 the day i bought it. I have never changed my wick or cleaned my zippo still works great, however it is about to be sent in to zippo because hinge is very loose. I just need to buy a new 1 b4 i mail mine in for repair.
You should change the wick at least annually due to the fact that as the cotton in the wick physically burns up, it lowers the actual wicking ability of the wick.
Loose hinges are very easy to fix on your own without sending it off,, Zippo Fanatic has a very good video on it.
(i know there is a different between them, but it does only matter for filling it up)
after cleaning, just wait 1 min and its evaporated. after that you can fill and use it
I like the way you cleaned the Zippo lighter and replaced the wick and assembled it.
@@maksmith850 Thanks for that information

had my HPC engraved Zippo almost 25 years. never cleaned it never changed the wick. just flint and fluids and slide the wick up a bit and trim it and it still works great.

Thanks for the vid I’m getting a zippo soon so it’s nice to know how to clean it
You are welcome. Enjoy your Zippo.🇧🇻
Both fluids are made out of naptha. You can buy this product from a hardware store under the name paint thinner for a lot cheaper.
yeah we use thinner in the garage and someone wanted to use my zippo only it was empty so we got the tire section and filled the lighter with thinner and it worked like new
might go get half a liter of that as soon as this coronavirus shutdown stops
You sure it's not fake?? it kinda sounds like it is
Yes I'm sure
My zippo is coming tomorrow morning and I can’t wait 😭
Congrats bro. I too bought one months ago. Very nice to have one 👍🏻
Before you change the wick due to the charred end, pull the wick out up to the top of the chamber and cut off the charred end. You can do this several times before you have to change the wick.
My wick burned in few second, is that meaning i put a few fuel in my Zippo ??
Mahmoud Mainz try gasoline
meat moose no try jet fuel
Marco Rodriguez Its too concentrated, it melts the casing as well as any nearby steel beams
@@nakiawebb5670 damn jetfuel
I've used my Zippo daily for 34 years now and have never done any maintenance on it.
I did send it in twice because the hinge failed but beyond that nothing besides refueling and replacing the flint
Gustav Meyrink I was a bit worried the hinges failed a lot but 2 times in 34 years is great.
The lifetime warranty means that it only cost you postage to fix and you get a new insert.
how often do u change the flint?
Half a year maybe. Holds forever
@@thesecomments4777 damn i have to change my flint about every 30-45 days
WOW. Great video! Your English is great too!
I cant believe i just watched 13 min vid of some dude cleaning up a lighter
Because light bulbs and fish cars don't sing weather jobs on the Saturday months.
You cleaned the zippo when it was relatively clean, you then replaced the flint which had plenty of life left, the wick looked fine too and you could have just pulled it out further and trimmed the burnt end.
Kimbo Slice It was for the tutorial man, he even said he wouldn't normally do some of the things he did...
I was probably in a grumpy mood or something when i made that comment lol
Kimbo Slice lol
Lol
Sorry :D
I cut a new wick in half. I get 2 wicks for the price of one, I also put a little bit of clock oil on the hinge. I also stretch the spring on old zippos, after so many years the spring 'shrinks'. But just a little bit.
If you get a flint spring that's too far gone to save, you can take the spring from underneath the flint in a bic lighter and cut it to length to replace the zippo spring.
I've always fed the new wick in through the top so the structure of the wick that goes in the chimney won't be all fucked up
To save yourself some money you can also use some pliers and pull the old wick through the chimney and just cut it
Zackery-007 after you do that the wick is gone though so you have to replace the wick but the wick is long so you wont have to replace it often
To save money buy a 20 cents lighter jk
Zippos are not for you. Please continue buying your .20 lighters
in a pinch you can disassemble a regular bic lighter (watch out because once you pry out the striker wheel, the spring will shoot the flint out like greased lightning) the flints on a brand new bic are a little over twice the length of normal Zippo or Ronson replacement flints. you can use the wire cutters at the base of plyers to split the flint in half. put one half inside of the Zippo flint tube, and stick the other half into the little hole in the felt. you can even stick a 3rd flint under the felt between the felt and the cotton. out of the way, but accessible if you need it.
Ronson was bought by Zippo in 2010 I didn't know this till I bought some Ronsonol lighter fluid a few months ago.
you have such a calming voice! keep making videos!!
Adam AL-Janabi I know, right
lulz, everybody makes it look easy.. but the wick definitely did NOT pull through easily for me (had to tape it off like a shoelace in order to yank it through with the pliers).. also for anybody new (like me), i definitely would NOT recommend putting it upside down in the case to fill.. i get that it's probably easier for someone who's done it a hundred times, but it's actually hard to gauge the flow of lighter fluid (i did it over a basement utility sink, so not the best lighting), and ended up with a puddle of fluid inside the case.. long story short, the cleanup took longer than the entire setup..
have never cleaned a zippo lighter that clean in 50 yrs. the only reason i watched this clean freak was the wik insert. way easier to ome in fron top.
Funny thing is zippo owns ronsonol. Probably the exact same fluid and flint no matter what brand the container says
+Zach Eiriksson
Well, I would hope the Zippo and Ronsonol flints are the same. After all, Ferocerium is Ferocerium no matter who makes it.
As far as the fluids go, Ronsonol used to have its own distinct formula, however, I heard that Zippo retired that Ronsonol formula around 2015 so you are also correct in saying the fluids are the same as well.
Thanks dude. Now mine lights up as soon as you flick the wheel for the first time. The burner part definitely needed to be cleaned up of soot.
I don't even have a zippo
Maybe It Is Time...
Yea, get one yo. Do it do it.
@@SunNpalmtrees Do it. Do it. Finkle wants some dinkle. LOL
Just watched this and thanks, you answered a few questions I had. Very helpful
The spare flint in genius!! Doing that now..
Always have a spare flint 👍
i always have 4 spares. It's so out of the way that I used to forget I had them under the felt.
I put my flints in the hole of the felt lmao
My Zippo is a decade plus old. I've got to try before the winter rolls in!
I don't lift the felt pad to fill. I use the little hole in the middle of it to insert the spout, removing it to allow the can to "inspire" and repeat the process until the fuel starts dripping from the flick. It's much simpler and faster. And I do keep a spare flint under the felt pad, yes.
It was great bro, but some tips:
You can actually wash the insert with water and detergent and some sponge or brush.
Yea u can pull it from the top with plyers but just make sure u don’t let the wick get too short
You can do that because fuel tends to evaporate so you can cut it couple of times without a '' unused fuel'' problem. You can clean it with rubbing alcohol too. I have mine from 2014 and use it everyday. Only problem i had were hinges because the lighter dropped me dozens of times.
@@posteniuzgajivacovaca8048 "Only problem i had were hinges because the lighter dropped me dozens of times." Same here 🙂
Thanks i just get my first zippo today
Just a heads up, keep all of your old bic lighters or similar type, the flint will fit your zippo, it will be longer so you will have to loosen your set screw or the wheel wont spin, but that the trick I usen good luck
11:01 funny part XD
