Thanks! It provides the wick 100% coverage of the cotton so that when your fluid is low, it can wick up every last drop. Sure it will still work with a stub of a wick, but won't be as powerful of a flame and can be blown out easily.
This video is amazing. There are so many small but incredible efficiency tips here for a Zippo novice (like me). Packing the extra flint and keeping a paperclip attached to the fluid via rubber band are both brilliant workflow improvements, thank you!
I like the plastic "ramps" for the cotton! I use my knife but I'll be switching. I also like the trick using the lid to hold the felt. Thanks for the new tips!
That was a great helpful video. I’ve never seen anyone add as much lighter fluid as you did and I think 3 times would have been adequate. Your other tips were excellent. I give you props !
I’ve carried a zippo every day since 1987. The best way to have the wick is about halfway up the chimney, and frayed. Never had one fail to light or need to be adjusted or replaced in all those years if it had so much as fumes in it. Set it and run it. My current edc is from ‘09, and it gets struck 30-35 times a day, and the wick is exactly as it was the day I got it and filled it for the first time.
Great video! Those plastic shims are a great idea, I'll have to try that next time. I also didn't know about the lid holding the felt up, that is pretty slick. Always good to have more reference material out there!
Just wanted to say thanks for this tip.. I've had my zippo for years, it's recently been a bit finicky and never thought to replace the cotton.. I just so happen to have had some cotton bacon lying around and did this, can already tell the difference it made.
Regular Zippos leak vapour from the hinges so Its always a good idea to store a zippo wrapped in a small plastic bag. This stops vapour evaporation. A zippo will normally last a few days without wrapping but if you wrap in a plastic bag it can last over a month.
I do basically the same thing but I get rid of the felt and use more cotton the felt is supposed to be a seal to keep lighter fluid in but because your using the plastic bag you don’t need the felt and you can put more fluid in with more cotton
@@lucas02389 I've seen those, but didn't want to give up any space. I should keep my eyes open for an extremely thin sheet of rubber to replace the baggie, or seal around the outside with nothing over the bottom.

*Instead of running the wick in an "S" shape,* I made it into shell shape spiral. The rationale is that it will draw fluid from the corners better, and draw the bottom fluid (which is more prone to evaporate) sooner. I've never tested to see if it makes a notable difference. *I use a single piece of cotton sliced to wrap around the flint tube to the outside,* the rationale is a single piece draws the fluid better. Some bored day I would like to try just 2 pieces of cotton fitted around the tube. *I removed the felt and used the baggie technique* to seal to hold a little more fluid. *Love the idea with the plastic inserts,* better than the butter knife I use, and you didn't have to stuff a small piece at the top.
Great video. The tip where to put the spare flint is gold. When i change a wick, i put it straight in. Put cotton in, bend it over, put more cotton in, bend it back til i get the whole wick in. Works just as fine.

Instead of lifting up the felt and filling my lighter, I started squirting fluid through the hole in the felt. I can't see the insert filling up so I don't squirt it very hard. When the felt soaks through and a drop runs off the lighter I know it's full. I don't know if they fit but I started saving flints from disposable butane lighters. I just lift the end of the felt and toss them in. I may still have some Zippo flints in my kitchen cupboard if the other flints don't work.
Good video for sure, but i want to say the rayon that comes with zippos is just fine. I unroll and fluff it out, then repack the new insert. Does anybody cut down the felt to fit more cotton in?
I know some people just don't put the felt in at all to allow for more room for cotton and fluid. Probably could get an extra day of use. I personally like the felt and it just doesn't seem like a Zippo insert without it.
