    Still good as a lighter in survival situations.
    From a design point of view; I wish Zippo had looked into refiining the opening 'ping' to be more consistant in tone and bell like (the ring).
    Also, an auto 'light on opening' mechanism would have been a nice feature to see. In a limited run of Zippos (something like the Thorens)

    • @Ludwig_Cox
      @Ludwig_Cox  Месяц назад

      How so? The fuel evaporates eventually so that wouldn't be optimal for a survival situation. But then again there's also the butane torch inserts that don't have that problem so it could be good I don't know. Do you mean that the lighter would open and light automatically when you press a button or? Interesting idea

      @Moodymongul Месяц назад

      @@Ludwig_Cox Zippos can run on anything flammable :). Good for survival. As for the auto ignition feature, I was thinking something like the old Thorens lighters. But a less complicated mechanism.

    I still have mine that I carried for over fifteen years until I quit smoking in 1987. It's a zodiac model that had the Cancer symbol, lol. I remember it got shot with a BB gun and the guts were stuck inside so I sent it in and they fixed it for free. What a great American product. But I must say watching you smoke almost made me sick, and you need to quit that nasty habit. I wish I'd never started.
    Note: One big drawback is over filling it and sticking it in your pants pocket and having it leak on your junk: Not pleasant.

    I collect Zippos over half a lifetime & will firmly state:
    They should be more accountable for the durability of their finishes & artworks.
    People are paying for expensive printed designs that fall off in no time, reverting to plain models. Loving those etched & paint filled works from their good old days

    • @ElectroPig
      @ElectroPig Месяц назад

      Don't forget though, that many (most?) collectors also tend to buy most of their Zippos specifically TO collect them, and just have a few for daily use. That said...the finishes chipping off can be annoying, but at the same time, it shows that it's been used, and in time, each Zippo becomes a uniquely personal item. No two Zippos will ever have the same wear, scratches, dents, et cetera, so they all become uniquely YOURS.
      Saw an etched-and-filled Mikey Mouse Zippo a few weeks back, but they were EXTREMELY limited, and of course, already sold out. d=^( Missed out, but it was still a beautiful example of the artistry and craftsmanship that USED TO be in almost everything. 100% agreement with you about that.

    One thing to note, when you mention you need to fill the Zippo "every few days", from my experience, I usually refill mine on the weekend, but I can go for between 12-14 days before it's completely dry, after regular, daily use. I use the Zippo Fuel Canister to speed the process and make it even easier, as that little tank holds EXACTLY one refill's worth of lighter fluid! If you refill often, then just refill until the cotton looks "slushy", and you'll have a little bit of fluid in the lighter body. Just open the fuel canister and dump the extra fluid back into that, top it up, and you're all set for your next refill! I also keep one in the car, since we all know you never run out of fluid when you're sitting at home, with a full can RIGHT THERE! That ends the problem of running out while you're away from home! d=O)
    Also...were you aware that Zippo also now has several BUTANE INSERTS now? They've got the "Yellow Flame" which is the butane version of the standard insert, the "Yellow Flame Pipe" which is the butane equivalent of the regular pipe insert, and for those who prefer the "blue torch" type lighters, they also made a single torch and a double torch for cigar smokers. They even have a USB-rechargeable "Arc Lighter" insert, as well!
    I've even found one by "Chief" (on AliExpress) which is a butane DUAL FLAME insert! When you open it, you don't need to hold down the button to keep it lit, as the gas valve is under the cam. This means that you open, flick, and it's lit...just like any other Zippo...BUT...when you push the button, it switches from a regular yellow flame to a blue torch! Let go of the button, it goes back to the regular yellow flame again. Very nifty little design!
    My "daily use" Zippo is the "Skull With Brain Surprise", and it's still available on most worldwide Zippo sites. I'm sure you'll appreciate the design. d;o)
    If I weren't a Zippo collector, it'd also be CHEAPER to use the Zippo than disposables, due to the fact that disposables aren't made to last. Even the refillable ones with piezoelectric ignition only usualy last one or two refills before the crystal stops sparking, and they become useless. In one year, a single Zippo will be roughly the same as the number of disposable lighters you'd go through. Every second after that--and for the rest of your life--you're SAVING money that would otherwise have been wasted1
    Oh, yeah...and they're cool! 100% agreement there! Bruce Willis would have looked stupid crawling through that air vent in Die Hard, and pulling out a yellow plastic Scripto Tokai, now wouldn't he?

    • @Ludwig_Cox
      @Ludwig_Cox  Месяц назад

      Wow 2 weeks is a long time for the fuel to last. I don't want to buy the butane torch inserts because that's not my thing I want to use the original zippo only. And yes buying a zippo is a no Brainer, 100% agree

  • @SaxoGrammatic

    I don't know if it is as noticeable when lighting a cigarette, but when I use it to light my pipe, I get a foul petrol taste during the first several puffs. I do carry it if I'm likely to be smoking outdoors, but that odor and the constant refilling prevent it from being my primary source of ignition. It's a shame because it is so reliable and iconic.
    I also have the relatively' new "soft yellow" butane pipe insert from Zippo, which solves the taste problem but has other drawbacks like having to keep the button pressed, limited capacity (or it's leaking - I'm not sure), and non-adjustable flame on the pipe version. It gives you the classic ping at least.

    • @Ludwig_Cox
      @Ludwig_Cox  2 месяца назад

      @@SaxoGrammatic Zippos are not meant to be used to light pipes and cigars. Pipes and cigars should only be lit with a butane lighter or matches for the exact reasons you just described.
      Zippo butane inserts are meant for cigarettes, you could argue you can also use them for cigars but the constant button pressing to properly toast a cigar is NOT practical at all. Buy a proper soft flame pipe lighter for pipes and a torch flame butane lighter for cigars. Cheers Ludwig

    • @SaxoGrammatic
      @SaxoGrammatic 2 месяца назад

      @@Ludwig_Cox Both the fluid Zippo and butane Zippos I use are intended specifically for pipes. The chimney opening is on the side to accommodate pipe lighting horizontally, and there's even a pipe emblem on the case. Lots of pipe smokers use both varieties, especially the classic with fluid. Some people apparently aren't sensitive to the petrol odor and some are. I'm in the latter group, but as I said, it's good for outdoor use despite the taste. That said, I plan to upgrade to an IM Corona or similar at some point. I've used matches but they're annoying if the moisture in the tobacco is less than ideal and you have to relight multiple times.

    I really like durable, simple things, which is why I've been a fan of Zippo lighters since I was a child. I also have three, which would be enough for three lifetimes, I don't know how I will use them. :D However, it is not true that it is less harmful to the environment than a quality gas lighter. On the one hand, you throw away Zippo liquid cans, and on the other hand, this gasoline-based liquid is more harmful than burning gas.

    • @Ludwig_Cox
      @Ludwig_Cox  2 месяца назад

      I didn't say it was more environmental friendly then quality gas lighters. I said It is more environmental friendly then disposable gas lighters made out of plastic which it 100% is. Quality gas lighters also need butane that comes in butane bottles so it's exactly the same packaging as a can of zippo lighter fuel. To "make" butane gas you also need to drill in the earth so that comes with a multitude of problems for the environment. But I'm not an expert on this so I have no idea if burning zippo fuel is more environmental friendly then quality reusable gas lighters, but that's not what I said in the first place.

    Well I hate to be captain obvious with this comment. There's WAY more to a liquid fuel lighter that smoking anything. They are widely used by the outdoor /camping/ hiking and survival community. They can be easily refurbished with basic tools. At one time the fuel was less than $2 US here . Its major drawback is the rapid evaporation and leaking usually due to overfilling. ZORRO makes some really heavy duty ZIPPO clones with far more durable hinges, springs and internal parts. The most durable outdoor lighters I have are large peanut lighters made by EXOTAC called the TitanLight. It has O rings to prevent the obvious fluid problems and if you have a basic knowledge of a fluid based lighter , and better sense than to set yourself ablaze😂 they work GREAT. I have a TitanLight that I filled, put the cap on and its still full after 2 years...Always WIPE your hands and the lighter off completely BEFORE you strike it. Personal health as well as the health concerns of others is a valid consideration BUT I don't smoke anything anymore. Environmental impact of disposable plastics is far worse than a ZIPPO lighter fluid can which WILL rust away to nothing over time. They are about 99% steel. I use commonly available white gas /napttha /Coleman fuel to refill my fluid based lighters as ZIPPO brand lighter fluid is $1 an OUNCE here in the US. THATS more expensive than bourbon. Fluid based lighters can also use high proof alcohol (ethanol) and other flammable liquids in a true survival emergency when you NEED a fire now
