I never thought I would say these words: I am reading Moby Dick and am actually ENJOYING it!
This book has defeated me over and over and over. I grew to hate it for that reason. I finally decided I'm tackling this thing if it's the last thing I do. I went to a different B&N than my usual, just to look around. I don't often have extra $ on me. I was not planning on buying it then. But I found the cutest little edition. There was only one left. It's the perfect size for taking with me everywhere. And that's what I've been doing. I am about 100 pages in. Even if I ended up hating it from this point forward, I can say it has been worth reading up to this point.
Honestly, I can't believe I am saying this!
This is why I am always open to giving a book another chance. You just never know how something might click for you at a different point in your life.

@@Yesica1993 I always felt like reading Moby Dick is an allegory for the search for the white whale itself 😆I felt similarly when I read it in 11th grade! That's so great to hear how it resonated so much more this time around. I've had that happen so much with books lately, that I'm convinced I need to re-read all the books I read in high school now just to be sure haha!

Happy fortieth birthday in advance, and I hope you’ll have a grand time celebrating while you’re away, Nikhil! I agree with you about the richness of Janny Wurts’ prose, and I’m happy that you’re enjoying To Ride Hell’s Chasm. You also said it well in regard to the magnificent character development that Robin Hobb achieves. What a cool birthday experience with good friends! Safe travels!

Thanks so much dear Philip! Really appreciate you man! Looking forward to joining the very illustrious elder statesman club soon :P
Thanks for your videos on Janny, it really inspired me to pick up her work, and so glad I did! Same with Robin Hobb (as well as your video discussion on the Realm Of The Elderlings with Mike). Hope you're doing well, and thanks for the kind words!

That's so great to hear Angela! I haven't watched that adaptation actually, but definitely will after finishing this book! :) I heard it's being adapted for Netflix as a limited series, which is what led me to think of picking it up

I am always torn about the practice of forcing kids to read classics in school. For one thing, no one likes being forced to read anything. "Read this or else you'll fail!" I guess it's motivating. Just not in the positive sense. More importantly, kids are not ready for certain things. Of course East of Eden was going to be over your head at that young age. That's only normal. Kids are then left with a disgust for these books and never want to see them again. I can't blame them.
On the other hand, I never would have picked up Macbeth on my own. I never would have slogged my way through it if I hadn't been required for a class. And, at some point, I ended up loving it! It's been years and I should reread it. I know I'd get far more out of it as an older adult. So there's a case where being "forced" to read something ended up to my benefit.
I guess it's case by case thing. It just makes me sad that kids are often turned off from reading at all because of bad experiences with reading in school. (I know this is beyond the scope of this video. It's just something often on my mind.)

I completely know what you mean! On the one hand, being assigned reading can be a great way to be exposed to things one might not choose on our own. I’ve found the times that I’ve been most resistant growing up to reading the material assigned is when the teacher didn’t provide any context as to why it was useful / important / noteworthy, so it feels merely like an assignment to complete rather than something rich with story and characters!
In fact that’s actually a great topic for a video - ways of providing resources for kids to enhance and enrich their love of reading. Probably beyond my expertise, but it is something that resonates as I can see how just as easily, some of those reading experiences growing up could have benefited from further context

@@Shelf-Esteem Oh, that's a great point about explaining to kids why the book is important! Even if they're still resistant at the time, this could stay in their minds for a later time. Thanks.

@@Yesica1993 Totally! I used to tutor math about 10 years ago, and I remember this helping a lot in getting students to understand why they were learning the material / why it mattered hahh :)
