    Finally!....I don't know why there are like 100 videos of F150 upper control arm replacement,but almost zero lower control arm replacement videos......Until now!.....I know I didn't want to put a new ball-joint on,and have a lower with old bushings......Thank you for this video.

      It's because the lower control arm never has issues except the bushings.

    Thanks for this video, it was quite helpful when dealing with my '97 F-150. The one thing I didn't anticipate was Ford taking a shortcut on the alignment cams; mine only had one cam on each upper arm bolt. Two are required if you don't have the equipment used during the manufacture..... Ford being cheap.......... but your video was really helpful and I'm grateful that you took the time to make it.

    Thx Steve. Very good video that I utilized to successfully change out both upper and lower control arms successfully. Took me much longer than I anticipated, but it is rewarding to do it myself and save a lot of money.

    Dude! AWESOME VIDEO! I have a 1997 Expedition that I will be replacing the whole front end suspension components including front and rear shocks and hopefully install a 2' inch lift while I'm at it. This is just what I needed. I was thinking I should make a video of it because you're right, there's not a whole lot of videos like this but don't think I have the right camera for the job. Thank you for sharing, you're saving DIY's a lot of $$$!

    Steven, Thank you very much for putting the time in videoing and editing that F-150 front replacement job. Great job. My local garages want between 1,000.00 and 1,300.00 to do the same thing for one side. I found the parts on Partsgeek site and the total front end left and right parts are only 270.00. Now I can do it myself thanks to you. Most Mechanic shops are ripe off shops. It truly hard to find a great one. Keep producing videos please.

    One tip: when knocking the ball joint studs loose, take the castle nut off, flip nut around, then smack it. You get more force transfer on flat nut and stud surface and don't mess up the castle on nut. I know you sere replacing these, but good tip for future projects.

    @ 30:56 You should leave the upper control arm bolts "snug", and torque them down while fully loaded. Gave a thumbs up, but you don't have to compress the spring on these fords. Currently working on my F150. Spring basically fell out when I pushed down on the lower control arm... Thank God lol, cause they can destroy you, no matter "how" safe you think you are. Yes, I have coil compression tools, but did not need em. Hope this helps save someone any unnecessary danger. :-)

    Good job and video. If anyone wishes to do any work like that, they will find that the first step to do is to spray any bolts and nuts they might have to loosen with some WD-40 as soon as you get the wheel off. It will make unscrewing all those bolts much easier and faster, especially if they are rusty. Just never put it on the lug nuts holding the wheels on the vehicle.

  • @HaemonAK
    @HaemonAK 6 лет назад +2

    Really curious why you used a spring compressor. By using the jack you are effectively compressing the spring, then undoing the two bottom bolts on the shock you release it from the spring. Letting the lower control arm down slowly you let the spring fall out. No risk of injury and you can do it in reverse. This would only apply since you are taking out both the lower and upper with all other parts removed.
    Just did this on my 97 F150. Great video though. Needed reference for a few nuts and washers placements since I took the truck apart over a month ago and it's sat while waiting for parts and break in work.

      Clarence Thatcher it's not that bad. if you use the 2 spring compressors on the outside of the spring, then just put them on the spring and tighten each one down a little bit at a time until it's compressed enough. if you use a single compressor then just put the base of it into the lower portion of the spring and tighten it down until it's compressed enough. once you rent the tool it will probably make more sense

      If you are talking about the single coil spring compressor(The one I used in the video) vs the 2 coil spring compressors, then both should work for it. I have used both on my truck before.

    It’s possible to safely remove the spring without compressors (which I do not use and don’t trust). You have to raise the truck higher, then support the lower arm with a jack of its own to simulate ride height. Then take off the shock and disconnect everything from the lower arm (which you’re replacing anyway). Then slowly lower the jack that’s holding up the lower arm, and the spring will release tension all the way down to zero.
    The reverse procedure is how they’re installed at the factory. Not with spring compressors, which are only needed if you’re leaving the lower arm connected (which would prevent it from dropping all the way down).

    The one thing I found with pickle forks is they don't work for me the intended way 99% of the time. I have to jam it in like you did, then hit the side of whatever I was removing the joint from.

    • @ottobauner9828
      @ottobauner9828 2 года назад

      You don't need to use one at all just hit the spindle on the side where the ball joint goes through. Might have to hit it twice. But it will release

    great job you inspired me to do my 2000 f150 2wd upper and lower.. did you use all moog and why???

    • @white_ostrich
      @white_ostrich  7 лет назад +3

      Yes, I bought all Moog parts off of RockAuto. They have all different brands of ball joints/suspension parts to choose from though. I don't remember my exact reasoning of my decision to go with Moog parts. I believe they had a lifetime warranty, but I have no clue if I will actually be able to collect on that warranty if the time comes. Good luck with your work and let me know if you have any questions!
