Ive owned my 1998 Lariat 5.4 for about 7 years now. Its been through a lot in that time, and had very few problems. The most severe issue it ever had was when it blew a plug at 150k. Otherwise its been an absolute tank. Well worth what I paid for it and then some. Being 26 years old, i guess its technically a classic at this point. The spark plug issue had to be addressed after the first few years. The plugs in my truck are just have longer threads for the aluminum heads. My 03 has NONE of these issues and it has right under 229K on it. Best truck I’ve owned. Bad on gas is my real only complaint.
Purchased a 2003 F150 back in 2002. had a spark plug blow the day before NY Eve in 2007 ish while on vacation 500 miles away. Replacing the brakes this weekend on the same truck. Have about 120k miles on her.
I got a 1998 v6 manual f150 best damn truck/vehicle I’ve ever owned i daily it because I’ve bought 2 cars within 2 years they both seems to have problems after problems but not my old rusty old truck man that thing is a beast I would honestly buy same year v8 less rust/miles fuck getting a new truck cause old ones are run just ass good as new ones if not better!
Wow...my 2001 5.4L super crew has 151k on it .. only issue was a cracked intake manifold I replaced...alternator and a fuel pump.. I am meticulous on the oil .. rear diff no issues has the 3.55 I think is the ratio.. did have plugs replaced by a shop as I heard easy to break off and easy to over torque Love the truck
Great video! I have two Gen 10 f-150’s, one only has 97k, the other nearly 300k. The one with 97k I have not had any of the problems listed, but I have had to replace 3 power window motors, 2x on the driver’s side. On my other truck, I have had to replace the actuator, read dif filter, and the plastic manifold, but never had a spark plug issue. Both trucks are made in different places. My 300k one was made in the States, the other one made in Canada. It’s strange how there are some subtle differences with the engines even though they are the same size 5.4. The older one made in Canada has a remote oil filter, which I’ve never seen before.
I have a 1998 50th Anniversary of the F Series F150 XLT, V8 4.6L. I am the original owner. I have not experienced ANY of the issues mentioned in this video. The truck has 135K original miles. I have had to have my fuel pump replaced twice. Lots of little electrical issues. Horn won't work, replace fuse, horn works for a few days, then doesn't. Electric door locks decide not to work. I have new rubber including spare, new headlights and markers, original engine with no major flaws. It is a good old 26 year old truck. Three doors. Headliner is funky and needs replacing. But I try to drive it once or twice a week whether I need to or not. Driving the old truck is TLC to it.
between my dad and myself we have owned 6 of these trucks since 1999 and we have never had a plug issue. My current truck has 138000 miles and my dad has 260000. I thought he had a blend door issue but it was a mouse nest. His 08 had the cam phaser failure but I blame him for not getting it fixed when he started hearing the "normal" ford lifter tick because thats not normal.
Close friends and family have over 5 or 6 older model fords 🎉including my 2003 v6 2wd ford 180k only problem on every single one has been that terrible rattling from under the trucks towards the middle/rear. Always knew it must be pretty common issue. Thanks.
The spark plug issue is also believed to be partially caused by the torque spec on the plugs for the PI heads (99-03 for the 5.4) being too low because they specified the same spec as the non-PI heads (97-98). To my understanding, the 97-98 Tritons aren't as prone to the spark plugs blowing out as the later 2v Tritons.
You’re actually backwards the 97-98 trucks have a 4 thread head. That’s what causes the blow out. The 99+ models with the PI Heads have 8 threads. Like the model shown in this video. Solved the blowout problem.
@@Brightleaf_Auto OP is correct, the other guy is backwards. the thread issues started in 99, then in 2004 ford had the bright idea to use 2 piece spark plugs in the 3 valve heads which would come apart when trying to take them out to be replaced.
I bought a new 2000 F150 5.4 and put 105k miles on it. I sold it to a friend who ran it up to 170k miles with no plug blowout. I currently have a 2002 F150 with a 5.4 bought in 2009 that has 170k miles on it and it has not had a plug blowout. The blend door failed yesterday or actuator. I haven't determined which. The factory spec on the plugs is 12 ft lbs torque. The current recommendation is 28 ft lbs. If you torque them to 28, you won't have a blowout. I haven't had a manifold issue with either truck. I did have to change the rear diff fluid when the traction lock started chattering on slow speed turns on the 2000 at about 80k miles. These trucks are as reliable as any you could ever buy. Update---It was the blend door actuator that failed. It was a bit of a pita for a 78 yr old to replace but I got it done.
The 1997-2002 4.2 V6 intake gaskets let coolant fill the cylinders and would hydro lock the motor. Trans are pretty tough in these trucks. Overall not too bad
My 99 4.7 4x4 has had none of this. But the bump stops had completely rusted away along with about 20lbs worth of inner & outer rockers. Just fabricated some new parts myself. Had a head gasket blow but just ran some Blue Devil through it 50K ago and it's been fine.
I bought my ‘98 4.6L 4x4 knowing the rear end needed work, but found out the hard way that the head gasket was blown. All my prior experiences with such was white smoke from the exhaust with an engine that wouldn’t idle very well, if at all. In this case, cylinders 5 through 8 were pushing exhaust gas into the coolant. When I started looking into the issue online, it looks to be fairly common as well. So FYI.
I guess I've heen lucky cause I haven't had any of these problems in the 20 years I've been driving mine. 2001 f150 4.6 190,000 miles and still going strong.
Love my 03, the issue that I'm having right is not mechanical but a body design. Ford put those channel grooves in the roof which collect water and now mine is starting to rust and stain the paint. I considering cleaning the channels out and coating them with Flex Seal.
Just traded in a 2002 king ranch with the 5.4L Triton. It has 299k on it. Motor still ran strong, but it was a north east truck so it had its rust issues
First video of yours I've seen. 👍 I just bought a 2002 F150 - 2 wheel drive, 4.6 L engine - with 182,000 miles from my brother in law. The original owner was an older gentleman down the street. No issues that I'm aware of .....but... Brother In Law let me know it consumes a quart of oil every 1400 - 1500 miles. No leaks no smoke, just needs to add a quart. He has been putting in conventional 5-TWENTY High Mileage oil in. I just saw a Scotty Kilmer video saying the oil cap info is wrong and the correct oil is 5-30. So I'm wondered if changing to 5-THIRTY HM might reduce the consumption WITHOUT causing any problems. ans FWIW I live in South Alabama about an hour from the coast. No cold winters, but very hot summers. Thanks!
My 1980 Ford F-150 short bed with an inline 6 cylinder and c-4 transmission continues to serve me well. It is newer than I prefer and a breeze to service.
My 2000 just hit 239xxx miles. And just this year it started giving me problems the blenddoor it’s messing up and the water pump just busted 😓but motor still strong no leaks at all Now the transmission on it was trash 😂 I had mine rebuilt and it’s been holding up really good
I had a problem on my 2000 F150 at around 75.000 miles with screws coming out of the shifter shaft under the dash and my truck jumped into reverse while I was outside the truck talking to a friend. I had to run jump in the truck and brake before it went into a deep ditch. Problem got worse and I had to put the emergency brakes on when I parked because it would no longer go into park and gear indicator was one slot off. Finally, after one of the two screws holding the shift rod on under the dash came completely out and the other one was really loose I found out on utube that these two shifter hold down screws are a common problem coming loose on this 2000 Ford. I came across a number of other people who had the same problem. Used plenty of locktite and screwed them down tight. No problem since. Also, the same truck had a problem with turn signals not working. Found out it was the wires in the multiswitch on the steering wheel coming out of their slots. Pushed them all in and put a little glue to keep them from falling out and no problem since.
Fantastic video! Thanks! I guess I can expect to blow a spark plug next! IF I ever get through the top of the list mentioned here. It pulled up 10 codes earlier. Like it just almost literally went down hill over night, then in a matter of three days everything went all to pieces. But as I was begging her to just to get me home I noticed my rpms was staying at 2. Steady mashing gas, decline at 2 rpms, heard the motor and lights stayed on, the more gas I gave, NOTHING!! STAYED exactly on two even letting off completely and floored. That's when the bouncing started from the rear.. . I am wondering if my gage was just stuck or if mechanical issue would cause that. I usually enjoy working on cars but something tells me this one really really wants to go Bungie jumping. Thanks for video!
The spark plug problem I cause of s#itty mechanics not torquing them to spec or not using high quality spark plugs, I own two of these 04 fords one is a farm truck with 320000 miles never had spark plug issues I just change them myself at 100k on every vehicle. these trucks are unbelievably reliable as long as you don’t neglect fluid changes
I’m a genius,i replaced the head gaskets, new style..intake manifold and runner manifold gaskets to new style (2), the runner control linkage pins, added 2core radiator. Got 250 k miles on first 4.2.:)))Into second engine with 210k miles:)))))Now 25 yrs later, she runs perfect.fuel pump just died:)))) Greatest Engine ever!!!!!!!
I've had the front brake line hose go bad on the inside, causing the front brake caliper to lock up. Garages just kept replacing the pads, rotor and caliper, and the tune of 1,000's of dollars, when all that was really wrong was a $12.00 hose. At just 90.000 miles I lost compression in one cyl. and had to replace the engine. I've had to replace all the CO sensors, and 2 coil packs, melted vacuum line up near the fire wall.
Recently had 2 spark plugs blow at once scared the fire outta me. I own a 1998 ford expedition with 300k miles great running truck but spark plugs have been my biggest concern. I knew number 1 problem in this video when I seen the hood up lol
I beg to differ on that sparkplug issue,it’s mainly on the 3 valve engines,it rarely ever happens on the 2 valve, wich is why the 3 valve F150 trucks that came in the next model that went from 2004 to 2007 I believe sadly were not even nearly as reliable considering how nice they looked.
What about the leaking windshield causing water to get on the back of the fuse box and GEM module. Causes all kinds of crazy electrical problems. Car would start on its own over night. Turn on the air and windows go down.
It’s not just the triton motor. It’s also the German made 4.0 L V6 that is in the explorer sport or the four-door explore. They also blow out spark plugs not as often as a trade in motors but they do I’ve seen it happen.
My 99 f150 has the ticking, but goes away with the engine warmed up. I already had a spark plug pop out. I plan to have the others dealt with before they pop in the future.
I have an 02 F-150 5.4 L 283,000mi transmission started slipping so I replaced it with remanufactured motor is still strong hopefully can get another 200k
THE 4.2 V6 F 150 engines are great if the oil is the very best synthetic which is AMSOIL ihpo ..Regular and low grade semi synths will make too much sludge and the protection value is low ..I have never had any engine issues with it being 208 k ,not even a lifter tick. Take the oil cap off and it looks clean and the metal has no speck of sludge on it..
These trucks easily last decades (I got my 2000 in 2004, my wife got her 1997 in 2000 and a couple more followed me home. This is a good time to hoard spare parts and donor trucks (I've lived through older classic truck life cycles) if you have the room. If you own a 4.2 and the oil looks milky park it and replace the intake manifold gasket before it hydrolocks. The "fix" doesn't do much but reset the proverbial clock until failure. Good thing 4.2s are so easy to work on. The 4.6 is of course the best engine for these beasts.
I don't know how many miles I have on my 97 f-150 4.6 . It had 97,000 when I bought it . 3 years later it still says 97,000 on it. I just started having the 1st performance issue . It stalls at low rpm. There are several videos on fixing the problem. The problem is every video says something different. Everything from a 10 minute job to a 500 dollar fix , this sensor , that sensor to a stupid charcoal canister looking thing that I can't imagine even being the problem . It's not a gold fish issue. Think I like the 10 minute fix the best .
Thanks for the vid, now I know what the ticking noise is, on my 2000 F150,that I have heard, for a number of years. Is it something that should absolutely be repaired, or okay to just disregard? We have owned this truck since new, and do not intend on replacing, because of cost. Have 146,000 miles on the truck now.
The blend door motors on these trucks are the least of your problems. Easy cheap fix. Its the blend door itself that is the big problem. The blend door cracks where the blend door motor engages. The side wall cracks out. Dorman makes a revised part that has a metal band around it for reinforcement. Problem is you have to remove the whole dash. Coil packs go out a lot, Only use Motorcraft or you will be doing them again next year. The rear window leaks, Bad design with sealer. They lay the ribbon seal along the top with a couple of dips in it so water pools there and causes leaks. still great trucks. Love mine.

This is a great video, expert commentary and anything that supports do it yourself is an easy thumbs up from me. Thank you for this!
Wow...my 2001 5.4L super crew has 151k on it .. only issue was a cracked intake manifold I replaced...alternator and a fuel pump.. I am meticulous on the oil .. rear diff no issues has the 3.55 I think is the ratio.. did have plugs replaced by a shop as I heard easy to break off and easy to over torque
Love the truck
The spark plug issue is primarily for 3v triton engines not really the 2v especially not the 03&04 2v which Ford used 8 threads vs 4 on prior models.
Thanks.
Got the same thing man been trying to figure this out for a while haha
Compared to chevy and dodge these problems are minimal compared to some of the problems they bring upon the owner
First I've heard of that but my 97 4.6 hasn't had nearly the issues as the later 5.4s we run on the farm.
@@Brightleaf_Auto OP is correct, the other guy is backwards. the thread issues started in 99, then in 2004 ford had the bright idea to use 2 piece spark plugs in the 3 valve heads which would come apart when trying to take them out to be replaced.
My 97 4.6 has never had plug issues. 200000 miles
@@trevorsmith5524 Not true, the ONLY 8 thread 2V PI heads were in 03 and 04
Love seeing a woman in the auto industry. I'm a fan. You have my support.
Honestly she’s really great I’ll definitely trust my truck with her to work on. I’m a 1aauto part buyer myself.
My 99 4.7 4x4 has had none of this. But the bump stops had completely rusted away along with about 20lbs worth of inner & outer rockers. Just fabricated some new parts myself.
Had a head gasket blow but just ran some Blue Devil through it 50K ago and it's been fine.
4.7?
2003 fx4 super crew. I have over 200,000 miles on it. It is a great truck, manifold problem, yes but the rest no.
I don’t know if I should be happy or worried that I’ve replaced about everything on this list ! Also my fuel pump 😅great vid!

Yes I just had my manifold replaced about 2 weeks ago total price was about $600
I bought my ‘98 4.6L 4x4 knowing the rear end needed work, but found out the hard way that the head gasket was blown.
I own a 10th gen F-150, and 11th12th...F-150 and dont have any of these issues except for the blend door which had to be replaced.
I've got 2 of these problems. Thanks for the video
Havent had a single issue that was listed in this video lol.
2nd 1997 actually 330k and running great, except for the starter, 2 weeks ago.
No check engine light at all.
I just bought a 1997 Ford F150 , it has a 4.2 motor in it , is this a good motor ? It has 97,000 & some change miles on it , runs good so far .
First video of yours I've seen. 👍
I just bought a 2002 F150 - 2 wheel drive, 4.6 L engine - with 182,000 miles from my brother in law.
So I'm wondered if changing to 5-THIRTY HM might reduce the consumption
WITHOUT causing any problems.
ans FWIW I live in South Alabama about an hour from the coast. No cold winters, but very hot summers.
Thanks!
I have a '99 and have had each one of these issues. The DPFE sensor will trigger an O2 sensor code so watch for that.
My 1980 Ford F-150 short bed with an inline 6 cylinder and c-4 transmission continues to serve me well. It is newer than I prefer and a breeze to service.
Have an 89 an 85 and a 82 all 300 6s can't kill em ! And I have tried !
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for share your beautiful vídeo, excellent vídeos, excellent Jobs, excellent information
1. Cops
2. Door lock actuators
3. 4wd shift motor
4. Head gasket at high mileage
5. Intake manifold
6. Heater core hose push fittings
7. Ball joints
8. Leaky windshield on GEM
Pretty surprised this one just had its video today.
Thank god for this video gonna buy an old 6 speed 4.2 for 2k and it seemed to good to be true
Great informational video.
Would I expect to find the blend door in the same or similar place in a 4.2L 2001 F150?
Thanks
Solid top 5
What about the leaking windshield causing water to get on the back of the fuse box and GEM module. Causes all kinds of crazy electrical problems. Car would start on its own over night. Turn on the air and windows go down.
My actual working truck a jewel. A 2002 extended cab, long bed, with 93k. So far, like new
It’s not just the triton motor. It’s also the German made 4.0 L V6 that is in the explorer sport or the four-door explore. They also blow out spark plugs not as often as a trade in motors but they do I’ve seen it happen.
Mine has an issue with the odometer. It flashes on & off. I did hear it's common in the f150
My 99 f150 has the ticking, but goes away with the engine warmed up.
I already had a spark plug pop out. I plan to have the others dealt with before they pop in the future.
The 10th gen models range from 97-03 right? Pretty sure 2004 was the 1st year of the 11th gen
My blend door in a 2001 has been broken for 8 years or so. No harm so far!
Looks like I'll be looking at the exhaust manifolds lol
The theft mode is a major problem
Lower left windshield leak causing G.E.M. module failure seems to be a common problem.
Lets not forget the squeaky squeak of the radius arm bushing!!!!
+@Comm0ut Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
210,000 miles and have none of these issues. not saying they wont happen but none of the issues as of yet. owned sence brand new.
I need help. None of these was my issue
The 4.6 is the best one to own
Thanks for the vid, now I know what the ticking noise is, on my 2000 F150,that I have heard, for a number of years. Is it something that should absolutely be repaired, or okay to just disregard? We have owned this truck since new, and do not intend on replacing, because of cost. Have 146,000 miles on the truck now.
I haven’t had any problems with mine besides the gaskets and the water pump
Well in that case of spark plugs on this truck, I’ll keep extras in the dash
The blend door motors on these trucks are the least of your problems. Easy cheap fix. Its the blend door itself that is the big problem. The blend door cracks where the blend door motor engages. The side wall cracks out. Dorman makes a revised part that has a metal band around it for reinforcement. Problem is you have to remove the whole dash. Coil packs go out a lot, Only use Motorcraft or you will be doing them again next year. The rear window leaks, Bad design with sealer. They lay the ribbon seal along the top with a couple of dips in it so water pools there and causes leaks. still great trucks. Love mine.
99 f250 SD 4x4. Did the blend door actuator. Didn't mention power steering leak
I have 218000 on my F150 and never had a problem with the spark plugs, never change them.
