i've watched alot of these how to car videos and yours are by far the best....straight to the point...you give alot of useful information and you SHOW everything you're doing you don't just do the whole project off camera and then talk about what you did without showing it...i like how you walk us through step by step as if we know nothing! Much appreciated it really helps...also you don't ramble on about useless stuff to waste my time!! Keep up all the great videos I'm learning a lot.
David, I could not agree with you more. ChrisFix you rock! I've started doing all the work on my car myself since finding your channel. Thank you for the help so much.
Thank you so much for making such thorough tutorials. The upper and lower ball joints on my 2000 B3000 must be replaced and I don't have enough money to pay a mechanic. My car repairing experience is extremely minimal, but after watching your videos, I'm pretty confident that I can do it myself. I'm really grateful for how well you've explained each step of the process and the camera angles you've chosen. It's very well done. I'm still quite nervous, of course. I certainly don't relish that one bolt that invariably will not budge to my feeble upper arm strength and will cost me an hour of my life and the skin on most of my knuckles. However, if I'm successful, you will have saved me nearly $400, plus the weeks I'd be without a vehicle, while waiting to pull that much money together. You're providing an excellent service to a lot of people who need it. Thank you very much.
Gertie Craign You are welcome. One mistake I made in this video is when you have the new control arm on and tighten the camber bolts, first hand tighten them, then put the truck on the ground, then tighten the bolts all of the way with the truck on the ground. It will help your bushings last longer. I am editing a new version and I have a special video explaining all of this. If you have a breaker bar, you wont have any problem making any bolt move.
A breaker bar is definitely on my list of things to buy. I'm finally gonna buy a torque wrench too...been wanting one for years. Is the special video you mentioned already out there, or is it still in production?
It will be out at the end of the week. I have it made but I am releasing two videos today on flushing the brake system and how to make a one person brake bleeder so stay tuned!
i know this video is super old but ive learned so much because of you dude ! i have a 96 explorer 4.0 and the only reason its driveable is because of your videos
Make sure you PreLoad the bushings when tightening the control arm! I used a jack, but definitely watch this if you are replacing a control arm! Control Arm Bushing Preload, Important Information!
yesterday i was in a parking lot drifting my fwd car for fun and i hit a covered up hole and now my tire is not held by enything it tuches the side of the car but still spins and it does not turn left what is the problem please help
came back to these videos after a shop quoted me 2500 for bearings, brakes, calipers and a control arm/ball bearing replacement...I spent $800 on parts and saves 1700 on labor, absolute life 9 years later!
Everything people say about your videos being the best is very true Chris. Hands down the best video on this subject. Your close up shots are so helpful. I have watched a ton of your videos and you are the best there is. Your videos have helped me gain not only knowledge but also confidence. Thank you so much for what you do and for doing it so well.
Just like your most recent one from a month ago (How to Replace Control Arms and Bushings to Fix a Bouncy Suspension), Yu were real detailed in this one as well. I like the older videos as well. I'm using these to replace my lower control arms and spring to fix my noisy suspension on my 2013 Lincoln mkZ aka Ford Fusion. Thanks @ChrisFix!
Every time I watch a video of yours I get butterflies in my stomach because it feels like I'm learning my whole vehicle from a badass teacher I never had and without having to read my manual. I'm more of a visual learner. Thank you for all you do, your tips are awesome, and keep up the good work you are blessed and highly favored!
Watched this video several times before tackling this project. I did both upper control arms on my 99 Ford Ranger and then had it aligned. It was as easy as you said. Truck Rides great.. Thanks again for the videos.
I love watching your videos. I have an 05 Durango and this video helps a lot. After watching your video a thousand times and watching some Ram 1500 upper control arm videos, (couldn't find any videos specific to my vehicle, rams have same set up as mine) I am confident in changing my own upper control arms. With the help of my husband of course. I teach him what I have learned from you. Thank you.
I cant stress enough how great your videos are, One thing I would like to see in your videos are an estimate of avg time to do the job ex: It takes me about x hrs to do this with hand tools. I know there are variables involved but a general idea will help us decide if we should do it ourselves vs taking it to the shop or wether it is something we have to plan out our day to do.. One last thing you didnt replace the upper ball joint you replaced the entire arm is this because there are bushings on the upper arm (i think you called them cambers) that wear out just like the ball joint does so it is better to replace the whole thing.
I watch your videos all the time to fix my 2000 Civic DX Hatchback. Tons of great information. I'm always confused as to why there are some people who give a thumbs down on your videos. You do everything so systematically and with exceptional clarity and description. Keep up the good work. I'm about to do my front uppers.
Just checked the video , U made it look easy and very organized . I am now off to my garage to see how they did on my 2003 explorer . mechanic estimated 250$ for 2 ball joints . That seems fair after checking your video . Thank U for your service - Mr Chris Fix
Chrisfix, thanks for this one. Nice job, I'll be doing this on both sides tomorrow. exact same ball joint on 2001 Ford Explorer. Crow bar and jacking up are great ideas!
I'm a woman and help my husband every car repair and I only can really understand how to repair our vehicle problems thur ur videos thanks a bunch !!! Ur very helpful!!!!
You know, you should really get a patreon account. You have literally saved me thousands of dollars with fixing my own car. On my wifes old trailblazer, the shop wanted 600 a wheel to replace both joints.
Thanks man! Just did upper control arm on my Mazda B3000. Your video was my inspiration to do it. You definitely make it look easier than it is haha. Keep up the good work.
If you want to attempt to try to keep the alignment you can mark the positions of the bolts with a paint marker or something and then try to lineup the new control arms.
Chris, I really like your videos, got started on them in FRF. If this is on your Mazda, it appears to on the left side. The right side is the different animal, especially when it's the 2 piece design with over 200,000 miles on it. Something on that side (right) would be great as long as it stays 2 piece. changing over to the upgraded 1 piece is not in the cards for my Ranger at this time. I need to replace the bushings on all 4 control arms. The last time I did it was on a '69 Buick Sportwagon in the mid/late '70s.
Chris, where do I get my torque specks for my vehicle? That is very useful! And I am very found of your work! Keep it up man!!! I've done the headlights, cracked windshield, 1 year tire shine, and who knows what else!!! You help me out a lot man thank you so much
I am going to change the ball joints on my 2001 Lincoln Town Car, the tops look easy, but they too need to be aligned when finished, I'm doing the bottoms first. Then after the tops will have it realigned. Thank you for your videos. I have worked as a big truck mechanic for several years, but they use King Pins, not ball joints. They can be difficult, but I'm thinking ball joints may not be as difficult as king Pins.
Thanks for the video i gotta replace both control arms and Tie rod ends on my 95 lincoln mark 8 on wednsday and was trying to see how its done as a reference. Hope the lady has some cold beers waiting for me after i get the job done then have to take it in tomorrow for an alignment when the shop opens in the morning.
The shop here was trying to charge me 350$ per wheel on the front and i would rather buy me a graphics card with that much money. All the parts cost me 110$
***** hah nice! Glad the video was helpful! Here is how to replace the tie rods: How to Change Tie Rods (inner and outer tie rod ends) How to Replace an Outer Tie Rod End Also watch this for the control arm replacement because it is important info: Control Arm Bushing Preload, Important Information!
tom smith Thanks Tom! It is pretty simple in concept and everything goes as it should, it is pretty simple in real life lol. Glad the video was helpful! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
ChrisFix Chris? It is not professional to call a person dude or chick in any profession and you are GOOD at what I have watched on two of your videos. I know Chris that the torsion bar assembly has no coil spring, but many amateurs that have coil springs will attempt this job and get half their head knocked off Chris. Good mechanics as myself and YOU know this. In any profession a person should always tell the average person don't try this alone at home unless you know where serious injury or death can result. My name is Earl and is not dude. Lets try this again. I did give your video a thumbs up
Spamming my video with your comments on removing a coil spring that was never there is professional? Come on man. That is why you got called dude. If they are working on their car or truck, the coil spring does not have to be removed if they have one because the upper control arm has nothing to do with the coil spring. It is mounted to the lower control arm and frame of the car.
Great video you got straight to the point. Only question should you also replace the lower control arms or do the upper usually go out first? I purchased a 1994 Cougar and debating if I should them all.
great channel, one request. How can i replace a bushing from the Shifter cable thats goes to the transmission....not to replace the shifter cable, just the bushing
I have a 2000 3.0 Ranger 2WD, when getting quotes for the front end, the whole Moog control arm with all the bushings and ball joint was only $20 more than the ball joint on its own...... That made the decision even easier since a control arm is way easier to change out than just the ball joint.
Chris, just an update. I have the correct parts, and now the job is finished:). The other parts were for torsion bar suspension thanks for your comments
Is this and the tie rod replacement the same on a torsion suspension ranger? Have on 04 ranger that needs tie rods and control arms. Yours is spring, mine is torsion arms. Thanks
Hey Chris, another question, I don't get it, how does it effects the alignment ? You did a very good video on lower ball joints, explaining why it effects the alignment. But this one, I dont get it why alignment ? Keep up the good work, you're a man.
Crisp and easy to understand tutorial (as allways) :-)) Thanks chris :-)), camber adjustments, oow i had forgot about those, i would be supprised if its much off now, you were very carefull to keep the cam plates in the same orientation :-)) Now was there any swearing or dropping of tools off camera? ha ha
Thanks for the feedback bud! I can always count on you! I didnt realize it had camber bolts so I purchased new ones. Now I can return them and save $50!
ChrisFix Yes, take the recept back with the bolts, no need to waste your money. Well i look at it this way, people put a lot of work/effort into making videos, so the least i can do is watch (without ad blocker) and comment to show they are appreciated, just being decent i suppose :-)) And you make very good videos, no rambling on about what next doors cat is doing or other non related stuff ha ha :-))
I like your editing. I would like to to know how much time really elapsed at about the 3:48 mark to the 3:50 mark. Because when I did mine today (01 Ford Sport Trac), that part took about 30 minutes. :-) Thanks for the video.
Thanks for a good video. I, of course, have the Haynes manual for Honda CR-V, but allways good to also have a look at a video. What I was wondering about, is the alignment. If I only replace the upper control arm, as you showed in the video, and are vere careful when I do so, will it be necessary with an alignment, or do you think it will be fine without? Hoping to not use money on the alignment, that usally in Norway cast between 150 and 200 dollars (US).
I'm doing this on my truck because it seemed easier than just changing just the ball joint. You make it look way too easy on the side with the brake line. Mine almost made me go postal. Lol
Very informative videos Chris, I have a '96 Mercury Cougar that I am replacing the front end Upper and lower Control arms, Lower ball joints, both strut assemblies, plus inner and outer Tie Rod ends. In what order should I replace the parts?
Hey Chris so I have a bit of a Dilemma, I bought a car the other day, went to get an alignment and the mechanics told me it can't be aligned because it needs control arms, tie rods, a toe bar and bushings. I was just wondering as a college student who does some repairs himself should I keep this car and try to do some repairs myself or should I sell it and get something else?
i've watched alot of these how to car videos and yours are by far the best....straight to the point...you give alot of useful information and you SHOW everything you're doing you don't just do the whole project off camera and then talk about what you did without showing it...i like how you walk us through step by step as if we know nothing! You are really good at these videos. The best actually.
If you want to attempt to try to keep the alignment you can mark the positions of the bolts with a paint marker or something and then try to lineup the new control arms.
Thanks for the tip!
@@chrisfix do you have any tips to fix a stuck bushing in lower control arm? It looks like I bent the two brackets inward when I pressed the bushing
You have a really nice channel, Chris. Excellent explained, easy to follow videos.
+AhPhoey Thanks a lot!
Nice! Love how you don't have a ton of intro, get to it and are smart about it.
Thanks that help me a lot. I put the lock bolts in back award. Thats why it was making noise.

I'm a lot more excited to be able to help out millions of people! And I wish I had money "rolling in" lol
Fabulous video!

Awesome! Glad the videos are helpful!
Very useful video. I will do my '90 Cougar this Saturday. Thanks.
Hey Chrisfix, can you do a video on the lower arm of your Ranger, I have damaged mine and need to see how to replace it...if possible.
hey chris, since i watched your video for the fist time i just feel like i'm in school. thank you so much!

Really good straight forward videos you have I will be using these videos for my own truck ! Keep it up
Hello! Very good work!
Tip
You have to press the bushings with the vehicle on the ground or put the wheel on that level it works.
Thank you! Yes, that is a great tip! I am actually editing a new video with this tip in it! Thanks!
Thanks for the video i gotta replace both control arms and Tie rod ends on my 95 lincoln mark 8 on wednsday and was trying to see how its done as a reference. tom smith It looks easy because he removed the coil spring first but told no one
Earl Guyton Dude, get your facts straight before you make accusations. This is a torsion bar suspension. There is no coil spring.
U save my day and my money 💰 great video bro
Man you make it look easy
Another nice job! Thanks, Chris.
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
What was the actual amount of time it took to do this job and would that be about the same for any vehicle? Thank you
Great video as always Chris!
hhvazquez Thanks a lot!
This was a great video, thank you!
Would you recommend changing both sides at the same time?
Vincent Vega of course. Why would you run a new one and old worn one on the other side. It’s going to ride uneven.
Really enjoy your videos and learn a lot, even if I may never use it, I at least have seen how it is done, should I ever have to do it. Thanks
Chris Fix. Love the videos, Bro.
One can also use a little white out or correction fluid marks to make part alignment on reused parts easier.
Hey Chris,
Where can I find all of the torque values for all bolts on my 1999 Toyota Sienna
Thanks!
Great video you got straight to the point. Only question should you also replace the lower control arms or do the upper usually go out first? I purchased a 1994 Cougar and debating if I should them all.
Chirs would you rather use the seald ball joints or ones that have grease fittings.
When you spray the fluid in the nuts and bolts do you have to let it dry? I stripped a lugnut after spraying it. The tire was long overdue anyways.
great channel, one request.
+Robert L Yea, that makes it real simple!
It was actually cheaper for me on a 2000 Explorer 5.0 AWD to go with the whole control arm as opposed to the bushing.
Saves me time & money!
amazing vid! my new part squeaks when driving after the rainy days 😢
I noticed you are a lot more calm in the older videos. The newer ones you sound pumped to make the video and excited. Good video tho!
Chris, just an update. I have the correct parts, and now the job is finished:). The other parts were for torsion bar suspension
thanks for your comments
Great! Glad the video helped and you got the job done! Good work!
Good job 👏. Thanks for showing us how to do this.

+Salty Naulty AWESOME!
Just found out I have extremly worn upper control arms. Not happy about it but love this information.
Could you just replace the upper ball joint or do you have to replace entire arm when doing this job ? THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEOS
Hey Chris, another question, I don't get it, how does it effects the alignment ? You did a very good video on lower ball joints, explaining why it effects the alignment. But this one, I dont get it why alignment ? Keep up the good work, you're a man.
Very easy saved alot of money thanks:)

Thanks for the feedback bud! I can always count on you! I didnt realize it had camber bolts so I purchased new ones. Now I can return them and save $50!
ChrisFix
Yes, take the recept back with the bolts, no need to waste your money.
Well i look at it this way, people put a lot of work/effort into making videos, so the least i can do is watch (without ad blocker) and comment to show they are appreciated, just being decent i suppose :-))
And you make very good videos, no rambling on about what next doors cat is doing or other non related stuff ha ha :-))
Hahaha, thanks a lot bud! I really appreciate it!
Do you have a video about the passenger side, especially if you have the 2 piece design?
love your videos man.
You sir, are a good man. *thumbs up*
+Jeremiah Graves Thanks a lot!
Man you make it see so easy thank you for the video
Fabrizzio Rivera Thanks Fabrizzio. Glad the video was helpful!
Just an observation the link to the socket set you use is for a Stanley set while you are actually using a craftsman set.
Lol
How did you get around the lines. They are metal.
yes ur videos are awesome n satisfying too. Thanks for all ur videos bro its very helpful
I just realized it must be a pain to keep moving your nice camera when your hands are all greased up.
He has gloves so he just switches pairs
Probably mostly touching the tripod but i can definitely see it being annoying
@@Futurebeefcakesmart guy haha thank you lol
Make it look easy 😮
Thank you so much. I keep changing part after part lol might be time to buy new lol but hey 400k miles befor my upper arm needed replaced
Thank you i am about to replace the upper control arm on my ranger . Thanks for the help .
Travis Valentine Awesome Travis! Glad the video was helpful!
