    Yeah, about that rocket, John. It's actually a direct reference to a Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutters. Long story short, it's the story of how an old bamboo cutter came across a young infant girl and raised her as his own, as he and his wife had no child, whom they named Kaguya-hime. (literally Princess Kaguya. A little on the nose if you ask me) Kaguya would eventually grow up to become a woman known for her incredible beauty. Five princes would eventually come to her in order to ask her in marriage, but Kaguya tricked them into performing impossible tasks, asking each of them to bring an item that doesn't exist under the guise that she will marry whoever brings its specified item. Needless to say, they all failed. Eventually, it's revealed that Kaguya, like in the game, comes from the Moon and eventually leaves her adopted parents to return to her true home. And yes, John, the Lunarians from Final Fantasy 4 were directly inspired by this very folktale.

      I agree Johnny was someone who would always put a smile on my face with his videos BECAUSE he looks out for the everyman which is why I prefer Johnny to Jirard (I do have a large respect for the Completionist because of his dedication). although I'll be bones before he EVENTUALLY gets to the Paper Mario Series. I also have massive respect for Johnny because he can push through games like Mega Man, the original Shantae, and other games and finish them where I would put it down after a game over because of certain things out of my control such as screen crunch or my prefrences for unlimited continues while mega man forces me to start the entire level or the start of the game all over because I'm not a great player in certain areas like most 2d games except pirates curse and the shovel Knight (currently) trilogy.

I understand how he feels about the 3-episode structure it has, but you're almost never retreading old ground during each of them, so I really don't feel fatigued from it. • @MahboiMusic
      @MahboiMusic 6 лет назад +6

      I don't think it's an objective flaw at all. It would only be a flaw if the game was filled with repetition and padding. And while there certainly is SOME padding, especially towards the end, it's nowhere near enough to put the game in need of restructuring. I greatly enjoyed the game the whole way through, and I think the game would've lost a lot if it ended at Orochi.

      To be honest I don't think Johnny did the demon gate trials since his experience seems focused on any percent rather then getting all the beads filling all the tomes and the move list beast diary.
      For example getting all the beads gives you a powerful bead necklace to use in the special new game.
      But to make it somewhat easier I agree just buy a lot of steel fist sake vengeance slips and holy bone L's also using a Rosary as primary and reflector as secondary. This allows you to to get damage in range an the reflector when countering a move does so much damage.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 4 года назад +1

      Or you just do it with the top two Glaives (since the twin-Glaive skill has an unstated effect of decreasing charge time significantly) and load up on Traveller's Charms to make it so you can finish most of them without even taking damage.

    • @PomLamb
      @PomLamb 4 года назад

      @@CruelestChris That is a really effective strat though I prefer the reflector and beads because I am more defensive than attack and I make it so it is balanced between the two. I also use steel fist sake for attack boost which adds incredible damage to the counter slam that reflector does. I also use the gold dust to upgrade the items I use most so I can get full potential of my celestial weapons.

      One bit of advice if you like your counters is that the double-Reflector tech also has a hidden ability: it increases the length of the perfect counter window for the sub-weapon. I imagine the double-Rosary one has some undocumented second effect as well, but I don't really use them enough to know what it is.

  • @hgnbfc2

    Okami is definitely one of my all time favorites, although I can see why Johnny didn't get as much out of it as I did because I was a HUGE mythology buff as a kid and I got a huge portion of the references. If you don't know your Japanese mythology, you won't understand the significance or reasoning behind certain characters or plot points, like Orochi being defeated by booze and other random NPCs with neat little touches. For me it was awesome to play through a collection of Japanese folktales, but if you don't know those folktales, you won't find the game nearly as enjoyable.
    Edit: Also, no mention at all of the soundtrack?

    • @Tortferngatr
      @Tortferngatr 4 года назад

      hgnbfc2 yeah, I played via Steam after having watched the Chugga LP when I was younger (which helped explain a lot of the mythology aspects.) It was definitely fun to play through as a benevolent goddess restoring life to the land that is also a badass wolf that murders the wicked in a Japanese ink-wash world regardless, but without the mythology and folklore I can see why it might be a bit...eh.

    I can't argue most of your points, but the charm of this game blows me away so completely that none of Okami's problems ever bother me. This is one of my favorite games ever, just because of how lovely the world is. I love the art, I love the characters, and I actually like that it fully builds up its story arcs rather than making them just a fragment of a larger quest. That arc is the only thing that matters to the surrounding people, so it takes over the story when you're dealing with it. I empathize with anybody who doesn't Okami, but it makes my top 5 games of all time easily.

      No, String of Beads is an accessory. Goes in one of the three item slots, gives you infinite ink, makes you immune to most forms of damage (any "grab" attack still deals damage, probably a bug) and multiples the equipped weapon's damage by ten. It _sounds_ like a weapon because of the Rosary weapon class, but the most powerful Rosary is an ice-elemental thing called Tundra Beads.

    Johnny I just wanted to thank you for all that you do, I had a death in the family this morning and I needed something to lift my spirits, and this review greatly helped me feel better. I can't wait for when you go back to the Donator's Marathon and for your 10th anniversary and for whatever that may hold.

      Sorry to hear about that...I'm glad that Johns video helped cheer you up though. Death is just another part of life I guess...but we can always carry on the memories of our loved ones through remembrance of the wisdom they may have shared with us. In a way, their brilliance lives on through those whose lives they touched.

    ah man as you said i truly think you need to know more of the japanese subtext to really love this game. as you had said this random princess goes up to space is a wonderful and silly version of princess kaguya that has a beautifully sad and sweet myth and folklore behind it. or even susanoo, that he has been a dick to amaterasu. im glad that you reviewed it, but the game is centered around the myths and folk lore and thats how they centered the game.

      Not to be a dick, but if a game requires you to know things outside of the game world in order to fully link with the stuff in the game, then the makers of the game have messed up. Same with movies, books, etc. If you place a story in a world that is heavily reliant on Japanese mythology, you need to have that mythology explained in-game in a way that people engage with, not expect them to already know it.
      The one time you can get away with that is the 'shared universe' concept, such as the concepts of hyperdrive/warp drive, blasters, and other such things in sci-fi, or certain types of magic in fantasy. It's so common and shared that people don't need it explained. In something that is far less than universal, either explain it and relate it to the player better in game rather than expecting others to know it as a reference.

    I'd love to see him tackle the rest of the Mortal Kombat games. Those were the first videos of his that I watched and subsequently made me fall in love with this channel.

    Hey Johnny I love your vids. I've been dealing with some really shitty health the past couple years and I recently I began taking treatments in April. Its an autoimmune disease called CVID. Common Variable Immuno Deficiency. So every three weeks I go to my local hospital to take treatments that are very exhausting, almost like mini chemo therapy treatments. Every two weeks I go to the same hospital to take xolaire injections for my asthma. And tmm morning I go to get a cat scan on my chest to see if I have a thing called interstitial lung disease. If I do the treatment is chemo therapy. I won't lose my hair or anything like that thankfully but that chemotherapy combined with my other treatments, I can imagine it'll be hard.Your videos have helped me get by so much you don't even know. I can spend a whole day watching and re watching old reviews. Thank you so much for your videos. You're absolutely one of my favorite youtube channels.
