You can have a fun drinking game for every time someone say the words "heart" and "darkness" in this game. It gets especially dangerous around the final parts of the game.
BG Pixlarn Plot Twist: Sora & Pals are just very big fans of Joseph Conrad's novels.
Just don't do it for the rest of the series, especially Birth By Sleep and Chain of Memories.

I haven't seen any classic Disney films to this day, (apart from Snow White) and the worlds in KH feel kind of like what you said. They don't really mean anything, so I can't put on those good ol' nostalgia goggles, like I can with the second game, which I somehow played long before I ever touched KH1.

Fortunately the Disney worlds don't overstay their welcome and do their job in helping the main characters grow by watching and reacting to what's happening in front of them. KH2 in my opinion do the job A LOT better

First time I was exposed to Kingdom Hearts was in high school when a friend of mine let me borrow his copy of the game. I didn't like it that much at first but, eventually, I bought the game for myself, gave it another chance and, well, the fact that I have almost every game in the franchise and I'm impatiently waiting for KH3 to come out speaks for itself.

I wasn't having the best of days today. I had to give my last goodbye to my dog, who has to get put to sleep tomorrow.
Wasn't too cheery, but seeing "Johnny vs. Kingdom Hearts" in the video suggestion, and the video itself, definitely perked up my mood. So, thanks for that Johnny. Looking forward to the rest of the marathon of my favorite video games.

The whole "meddling"/"world order" concept is really nothing more than an in-universe explanation for a strict limitation Disney gave Nomura. Which was that aside from Donald and Goofy, no Disney characters (not even Mickey) are allowed to interact with characters from other Disney movies, because Disney's executives apparently think that making characters from different movies interact with each other somehow threatens the integrity of their "brand"... (There are too many examples to list why I think the whole thing is a blatant Double Standard...)
That limitation still exists in the series today and the fact that it not only limits the scope of the crossover but how the stories in individual worlds play out as well (how Frozen was handled in KH3 is a prime example) only becomes more obvious as the series goes on...
It's especially infuriating because on one hand you have Donald bitching about having to maintain their secrecy and on the other you have Uncle Scrooge canonically creating an inter-world highway entirely for business purposes.
do you have like, a source to this claim? i find it hard to believe considering in the first KH games, the disney villains are together in a cutscene discussing their plans against sora. even maleficent has her own cutscenes with hades and jafar. im guessing what you are talking about refers to the disney protagonists?
That bullshit limitation applied to the Disney Infinity games too, and I'd argue it was just as bad, if not worse there. They can be used together in the toybox mode, but otherwise characters could only be used in their respective worlds, which is really stupid considering that the idea is that it's a crossover. With Kingdom Hearts, I at least have more interest in the Final Fantasy characters and rejects than the Disney characters, by default. So at least I'm not missing much when they don't go the full 9 yards.
If Disney ever loosens those restrictions (unlikely but we’ll see), then Square Enix actually has a pretty good setup for a new game’s story! Make the villain a group that wants to cause pure chaos across the world by disrupting the world order left and right! Now that would be making lemonade from lemons!

Johnny makes a legitimate point, for those of you who haven't watched the respective Disney movie of the worlds, how do you get enjoyment from these Disney retellings?
Iftekhar Ahmed- I have watched few Disney movies, even so I'm able to enjoy the colourful characters and stories the Disney areas of kingdom hearts contain.

gamerprince1999 Fair enough, but some Disney worlds are represented so badly in this series (Hunchback of Notre Dame and Kingdom Hearts 1 Neverland being the worst offenders).
I don't really know if that's entirely possible. I feel like anyone going into this game should know that it's a Disney game first and foremost. Being a massive Disney fan when I first saw the commercials, that's how it drew my attention. I'd honestly be surprised if anyone who didn't like or wasn't a fan of Disney decided to invest their time in this.
CJ Moore a childhood friend of mine had only watched The Little Mermaid and Aladdin before playing KH1 and even then had not been much of a fan of those movies, he enjoyed the different characters and stories so much that we marathoned all of the Disney films with worlds in KH1 after he finished the game.
So I'd say that it works as a good introductory point into the Disney library of films, at least.

As much as I like the franchise and the gameplay, I always felt like this was more of a fanfiction game, with Final Fantasy and less of Disney. I always kinda felt like Disney took a backseat to everything else. As mentioned earlier, I love the series but I feel like the convoluted plot drowns Disney.
They might as well drop the Disney licensing entirely.

Honestly, I'm one of those people who barely watched Disney but played KH religiously, in KH1, the only Disney movies I had seen were Tarzan, Aladdin, and the Little Mermaid, and to me, these worlds were just levels with individual stories that gave me an idea as to what the movie was like, and made me want to go and watch them, but to be honest, I still haven't watched Peter Pan, Hercules, Pinocchio, or Alice in Wonderland, but I did watch Nightmare before Christmas, I felt like I was actually more invested in the worlds not seeing the movies because I didn't actually know what was going to happen during most of them, and it was actually less distracting because I was blind to any possible downgrade in quality from the movies because I had nothing to compare them against

After watching this when it was uploaded, it made me want to finish working on the platinum trophy for the game and I finally did it this morning. First time 100% completing the game too even though I've beaten it lots of times over the last 15 years. So if Johnny is reading this, I just wanted to say thanks for giving me the extra incentive to push through to the end :)

Funny story when I started playing this series last year.
When I went to get the first game on PS2, I grabbed it from the shelf, paid for it, and went back to my car. I looked inside the case to see the disc when I noticed the logo looked a little odd. There were two little lines in front of the heart (this may sound obvious but the logo is pretty hard to notice). I looked up the game disc and noticed I had the completely wrong game. I went back in and exchanged it, then went home and played.
I still wonder just how confused I would have been if I would have started Kingdom Hearts 2 with no knowledge at all of anything in the series

Fun story: I got the first kingdom hearts as a Christmas present a year after it's release. To this day, it is the best surprise Christmas gift I have ever received. I remember shouting, "Yahoo!" For a good 10 seconds afterwards.

Johnny, I gotta say, thank you for introducing me to this franchise. When I first heard of this series, I didn't think much of it. But your videos got me interested, so I played all the games, and I was hooked, and Kingdom Hearts III is my most hyped game, now that Smash is out.
I really enjoy the Kingdom hearts series but I think the games could have easily benefited if it went for a T rating instead of a E rating considering that most of the franchises that take place in the game are based on G to PG-13 movies or Teen games.

Not gonna lie, I've been wanting to get into this series for the LONGEST time, but the first Kingdom Hearts game is on a console I don't have, and I don't want to experience Continuity Lockout by playing the later games. (Go to TV Tropes if you don't know what that is.)

Heracross X if you have a ps4, you can get the 1.5 +2.5 remix, which had 1, re:chain of memories, 2, birth by sleep, and the cutscenes for 358/2 Days and re: coded.

The main character of Kingdom Hearts will be in Super Smash Bros.
I am someone whose first Kingdom Hearts was KH2 and I played the game as a kid with barely any knowledge of the movies. Honestly, I'm not sure how I skipped out on watching Disney when I was younger, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the ever-loving heck out of KH2. The combat was so gosh darn good and satisfying that the game could have the most batshit plot out there (which is definitely the case) and I'll be more than happy to smack heartless with my key and then some. I didn't care for the Disney stuff as I was too entranced with the gameplay, but the environmental designs and getting snippets of the personalities of a variety of Disney characters certainly piqued my interest to at least check the films out.
TheMasterThief Yeh kh2 combat is definetly more entertaining and feels more rewarding even if some of the battles are mash triangle.

As someone who loves KH and has seen very few Disney movies: I still love the worlds. I feel like there's 3 types of people who will play KH. The people who will love Disney and will absolutely adore the game like Johnny. Then there's people like me, people who know the movies because they're everywhere but have never seen them. Seeing the Disney characters was still really cool even if I didn't make that connection. It was a fun addition and the warm loving characters of Disney are a great compliment to a game that's morals are really the same. Follow your heart, love your friends. The two go hand and hand in that respect. The third type of people will be the people who have somehow never known any of the characters in the game. These people will see the worlds and their characters as all original and made for the game. I think their chance of enjoying the worlds will be hit or miss. But in the end Disney characters still shine through their bad writing in this game. Especially by the second game where you visit their worlds for the second and third times. By then they aren't just Disney characters, they're friends.

A series that I really need to play XD Looking forward to these reviews, and in all likelihood I'll forget the plot by the time I actually get around to playing it.

Sterling Muse to understand the plot it's actually simple play in this order start with BBS or KH1 and play the other then you'll be fully understanding of the set up here, Then after that you have Chain of Memories which you can skip if you want as not too much plot important happens here but enough that you'll eventually want to check it out, Play KH2 after KH1 and BBS for the love of your santy please do this, once you've finished BBS and KH1 and 2, Feel free to try the side stories in the DS that add more details top certain charicters or move on to basically KH3's prolog in the form of KH3D and 0.2 BBS. The mobile game just look up the plot for it, it's a good mobile game if you like Kingdom Hearts but it takes forever to get to the story important stuff but overall stick to this order and read the reports in your journal and you should be fine:)

Even back in KH1, it was already part of the keikkaku that Mickey wouldn't show up until the end because he was going to retrieve the Key of Darkness while Donald and Goofy followed the Key of Light. That whole 0.2 thing was likely just an idea they had later...
I know you said you didn't really care Johnny, but as far as KH1 things aren't really all that complicated.

I'm so glad to hear you say you played kingdom hearts when you were in high school. I was about 13 when kh was released and I always feel so old because most kh people I are on RUclips first played the game when they were like 5 or 8.

Well, Kingdom Hearts 3 came out. Might as well marathon the Johnny Vs again so I know what's going on.
My favorite part of any Johnny video is when he decides to raise his voice at all, which of course makes the audio go from mono stereo to Godforsaken THX ear murder.
