  • In today's episode, I'm beginning the next Marathon as voted by you guys. It's Metal Gear!
    Everyone knows of the Solid series, but what about where the series truly began? Today, I'm looking at four games, Metal Gear (MSX & NES), Snake's Revenge, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
    If you're interested in that Metal Gear shirt, you can find it here on Merchoid!

      The code wasn’t explicitly programmed. It came into existence by complete accident. It has something to do with how the game generates certain conditions. It just so happened that the Fuckme1111111111 code met those specific conditions.

    I like how Snake's character model gets thinner in Metal Gear 2. This series isn't about big hulking tough dudes. It's about clever sneaky dudes. Like, they should be fit, but Snake's not exactly supposed to be the Incredible Hulk.

      +SelfAwarePedant It's funny you say that especially when in Metal Gear Solid he managed to withstand a close range canon blast with nothing more than an epic sliding action sequence (though I will say right now Twin Snakes...really LOVES the action sequences). =) Then you've got MGS4 raiden who manages to tank an armed nuclear weapons fortress with 1 arm no less. It really does make me appreciate how over the top MGS can be at times ^_^

      Jaylen the Paintstic Probably and I'm gonna call it right now (because I've played them both). Both games are engaging and compulsively addictive as well. It actually kind of reminds me of the Battle Network series. There's something oddly thrilling about going into a mission and never being quite sure what card your gonna draw next or how it'll affect Snake in the current situation.

      What's your favorite MG game?

    • @Daitomodachi
      @Daitomodachi 8 лет назад +7

      +Ben Link That's kinda of a tough question. Gameplay wise it's TPP. Story wise it's a tie between MGS4 and MGS3.

    • @benlink202forever
      @benlink202forever 8 лет назад +2

      +Daitomodachi I thought that MGS TPP was a little bit of a let down for me. since most of the characters I really...didn't get. I also think the gameplay is good, but the fetch quests are extremely annoying. So it's concept is "hell yeah" to me. While the gameplay in general is "meh" to me.

    • @Daitomodachi
      @Daitomodachi 8 лет назад +2

      +Ben Link Storywise TPP was a HUUUUUUGGGGEEEEE let down for me. There were too much cut content and plot holes. I honestly suspect it had something to do with Konami's switch to mobile gaming or whatever they're doing now. Don't get me started on the plot twist at the end. But that's my opinion.
      While the fetch quests were somewhat annoying,the biggest gameplay feature I absolutely hated was the repeat of missions. DON'T MAKE REPEAT MISSIONS PART OF THE MAIN STORY DAMNIT! But the amount of gameplay additions and the open world stealth was absolutely fantastic.

    • @benlink202forever

      +Sjono Actually I'd argue that the Playstation had more of a say in that then the NES ever did. Yeah the first game got a lot of people introduced to the Metal Gear franchise but then the second one (the NES one) completely undermined the model Kojima was going for and got buried by obscurity until the PS1 truly highlighted what it was Kojima wanted for his series in terms of scale, mechanics, story and scope it's what truly showed what Metal Gear was all about. Not that I dislike the NES but Snakes Revenge plays out more like a cliche action flick rather than following the deep subtext of the original.

Unfortunately the one thing it also received was quite a short print run which makes it tricky to find the game. The game really needs to be released on the 3ds virtual console.

      joakkar I can explain kingdom hearts, and so can alot of other people.

    • @joakkar
      @joakkar 8 лет назад +9

      no, you can't. There's literally stuff the creators themselves haven't bothered explaining and they're hoping to cash in on even more extensions to birth by sleep to do it. The only games I haven't played so far are DDD and Re:Coded but I doubt they explain where riku got the keybade he just randomly gave kairi at the end of KH2, when did namine randomly dissapear and appear as some ghost thing in KH2, or why donald and goofy are unable to recognize roxas in the picture form KH2 given they were pretty close to Ventus in BBS and they look exactly the same. I mean seriously, they haven't even explained why nobody from radiant garden can recognize kairi despite her being the princess and that was back from the first game.

    • @SuperSilverVideos
      @SuperSilverVideos 8 лет назад +2

      First off, you dont know me to tell me i cant explain the plot. Secondly Namine didnt disappear she just recombined with ,kairi. Third, the only people from hollow bastion that we meet are leon and the gang.Also its been like ten years and the only similarities are that she still has red hair. Fourth numora says that the whole riku getting kairi's keyblade thing will be explained by kh3. And last but not least, donald and goofy are just stupid. They dont recognize yen sid's tower in kh2 either, but numora says its because yen sid redecorated.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 8 лет назад +1

      +joakkar Riku's Keyblade: I'll give you this and pulling Kairi's Keyblade from nothing. Considering the last time we saw him he STILL had Soul Eater, I don't know how he got Way to the Dawn yet (or whatever the hell hilariously colorful one he gave Kairi). If they waited until AFTER the anti-KH weapon threw a bunch of light on him to give him that, it'd make a little more sense.
      Namine's appearances: Her ties to Sora. They plainly state how they connect this when Roxas talks to Kairi in the prologue. And Namine says later they'll still be around as long as Sora and Kairi stay close. So Sora comes running for her, Roxas ends up being sort of awake (might explain the scene with Axel) and Namine breaks Kairi out.
      Donald and Goofy not relating Roxas to Ventus: Pretty much a lazy retcon, same with Donald freaking out that Yen Sid lives at the tower. Ven didn't exist as a character yet, so they flat-out goofed on that continuity.
      Nobody recognizing Kairi: The last time the Final Fantasy Radiant Garden group could have possibly seen her was when she was like three/four years old, I heavily doubt ANYONE from Radiant Garden actually knew what their toddler princess looked like.

  • @jiyozer
    @jiyozer 7 лет назад +16

    i know im late, but the joke about the "fuck me" code is wrong. it does spawn you at the metal gear room, but WITHOUT every weapon in the game, in fact, they spawn you with only cigarettes. hence why you input "fuck me".
    also a second revision removed the code, it was only on some cartridges.

    Johnny a couple things I want to add with MG2
    !. They technically fixed the card swapping issue in away, you can find colored security cards that combine 3 cards into 1 like the red master card being cards 1-3 combined together, the blue master card being cards 4-6, and so on. Granted you still have to swap between different cards to open unmarked doors but I think its better to swap between 3 cards to open a door as opposed to swapping between 9 cards
    !!. To elaborate more on MG2's development cycle, during the time Snake's Revenge was in development, one of the developers actually found himself on the same train ride with Mr. Kojima himself. He informed Kojima that they had a sequel for the NES version in the works and asked Hideo Kojima to make the true sequel to Metal Gear 1. So Kojima made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on what sounded like a dare

    • @lucinavonnolaran8728
      @lucinavonnolaran8728 Год назад

      What really cracks me up is that it sounds like even one of the devs for Snake's Revenge was like "Nah, this ain't a sequel. Kojima, show them how it's done."

    The keycard system is somewhat improved in MG2SS. For every three cards you collect, you can swap them for a "master card" in building one that does the work of all three. Once you've collected all 9 cards and swapped them for the 3 masters, you can swap them for a card that does the work of card 1-9.

    I always said MG and MG2 introduced so many staples the series would follow and for an 8 bit console that scale is incredible. In fact that's the thing you'll notice in MGS the biggest difference between MG2 and MGS is the sheer scale and scope of everything MG2 introduced both game-play and especially plot wise leaped into the 3d world so damn beautifully. Another thing worth mentioning is MG2's pricetag which is almost as high as Shantae's for the GBC so if you wanna play MSX2 style be prepared to pay a small fortune for it...assuming you can find it in the first place.:)

    11:11 I laughed so hard at this I was in tears. Fuckme1111111111111 is the best password in NES history. And the irony of this joke is that it’s at this exact point in the video.

    So glad to see Snake's Revenge discussed in detail and held up to the original without nostalgia blindness... It's so much better than Metal Gear from a gameplay perspective. Plenty of environments, very few (if any) obtuse puzzles or obscure objectives, a kickin' soundtrack... Pretty much the only thing that's remotely bad about it is the 2D sections, but since it comprises maybe... like 5-10% of the game tops, it's hard to fault. I grew up hating Metal Gear, but I played Snake's Revenge until my fingers were raw... And it remains one of the few NES games as a kid I put the time and effort into actually beating all the way through.
    I still remember a while back when an older teenager told me that he was into "the original Metal Gear; ya know, the one from the Playstation." I tried to explain there were several before that, to which he looked at me quizzically, as though I had just suggested that aliens came to earth and gave the Mayans game systems known as the MSX and NES long before modern civilization began.

    johnny i need you to know that this was the series that got me into the metal gear games in 7th grade. i remember people weren't happy that you did EVERY GAME but i wouldn't have it any other way.

    Now THAT's research. And it's noce to see you directly played every version of every game.

    I might have to give these games a try someday (or at least the last one that was covered in this video). Really glad to see Mark in the video, btw~
