Great review Rory. Probably the best review of the 718 GTS yet (and there have been many). Your comments regarding the engine being the soul of the vehicle definitely ring true. Well done!
You sir put together one of the best reviews of this gem of a car, well done man, keep them coming!!! With the change from not getting a GT4 I’d get Cup2s and a truckload of coaching at the Ring, Spa, Portimao and Silverstone!

Andrew Sepahpour except cars like these are driven 99% of the time on the road, not on the track, and by people who frankly don't even care or are capable of extracting the absolute maximum performance of an engine. Most of the buyers buy it for the thrills and that's where it excels

As the Founder of the International Engine of the Year Awards how lovely to hear somebody saying the engine is the heart and soul of a car, this one not least. Track day and afternoon drive along your home road is for GT4 by a long mile. Road trip and unknown B road territory is for the GTS. Just to give add. perspective here.....
Still Winter here in Montana. But days getting longer and roads cleaning up. Just took my base 718 out for the first time in 2 months+. I have to say even the base car is BRILLIANT. The manual is so good. Yeah the 6 cyl sounds better but even the base car is still an absolute JOY. Great review by the way.
I don't need to pose with a car. I need to drive a car. AND a moment when you meet someone who understands how special this car is, is more precious than a moment when someone looks at your car because he thinks it's expensive.
Okay so I put down a deposit for one of these two days after it was announced 16th Jan 2020...since then I've been watching every single vid review that came out in both german and english. Yet none made me feel as good about my purchase as this one. Thank you sir
I was one of those poor souls that bought the 2019 four banger. It was my first Porsche purchase and I knew I had made a mistake two weeks after I owned it. I spent the money for an after- market exhaust and that helped the soundtrack, but I never did like the 4 cylinder engine. The car was quick and had plenty of power but I didn't like the very noticeable turbo lag that occurred until you reached 3K rpm's. I'm anxious to drive this newer version with the flat 6 as I have a hunch it's going to compensate for my woe's with its predecessor.
I was fortunate to pick up a very low mileage CPO 2019 718 GTS for a big discount thanks to guys like you. The NA6 prob will sound a little better, but the T4 motor is way more tune-able and and will remain faster.
Allan Miles did you not test drive it? I took one out and thought it sounded like a Scoob with a bag of spanners in the back. GTS 4.0 ordered for delivery October, just can’t decide the colour.
I bought my Cayman because i wanted to fly under the radar but still have an absolute weapon on the road. If you want drama, get a 911 or a Ferrari. I daily mine and its perfect
This is the perfect car I need in my life... Low Profile, Not Too much attention and looks cheap. It's not too loud, hey look at me vibes.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I Love It. I want It.
But you can't drive them at the same time/occasion. I have a modified Cupra ST. Same boot space as an RS6, same weight as the 718 GTS. Same power to weight as both (modified, not fair). Cost 1/6 of both incl oem+ mods and always have the right car with you. Not as dynamic as a P or comfy as the A, but close enough. No bragging rights obviously. Just a tip if you're on a budget, or need one car to cover all bases...
To me, all I need is a mildly modified 3.0 supra. I don't plan on having a family and I live in switzerland, hence I don't really need a daily as public transport is more than good enough.
I'm currently just a little kid waiting to get old enough to get a license, and this is my dream car currently. I really hope I can get enough money for this car.
I bought a late 981 as I just didn’t fancy the 4 cylinder in the 718. It’s my first Porsche and I wanted it to be the 6 cylinder version and actually wanted to drive one with the soundtrack of that engine to see if it was how I always thought it would sound and feel like.
The only fault with this car is the long gearing, which is an intentional choice by Porsche to keep the 718 in its place, compared to the 911. That said, if you can pass 100 mph in 3rd gear, the gearing is too tall! Other than that, everything else about the GTS 4.0 is damn near perfect. Some people think it needs more power (which really means torque), but I think it's just right for spirited driving on back roads, which is what I love doing the most. However, if you plan to visit the racetrack every weekend, this may not be the right car for you.
Definitely an improvement over the standard 718, but is it worth the upgrade over a 981? Stupid question I suppose- this thing is twice the price and won't depreciate like the 4-pots. Not sure I'd replace my 981S with this even if I had the money though (which I don't). Either way, definitely good to see a proper engine in a vaguely normal Cayman again.
But it’s pretty expensive too. It’s about $85-90k in the US with out options. A base Cayman with the 4 is about $60 and feels very powerful with its 300hp and 300torque.
Haha I agree that no one looks twice at the GTS 4.0. Everyone used to look at my GT4....but I don't care. Didn't buy the car for others and I didn't want a track car anymore. the GTS 4.0 is just as fun for me.
however is it as dramatic as the previous 981 GTS? Whats your opinion Rory? It holds value in part because the Cayman/Boxters that replaced it were 4 cylinders. It'll be interesting to see what happens to 981 prices now. From a purely selfish perspective, I'm hoping they drop.
